Diffusion in Fluctuating Media: The Resonant Activation Problem

We present a one-dimensional model for diffusion in a fluctuating lattice; that is a lattice which can be in two or more states. Transitions between the lattice states are induced by a combination of two processes: one periodic deterministic and the other stochastic. We study the dynamics of a system of particles moving in that medium, and characterize the problem from different points of view: mean first passage time (MFPT), probability of return to a given site ($P_{s_0}$), and the total length displacement or number of visited lattice sites ($Λ$). We observe a double {\it resonant activation}-like phenomenon when we plot the MFPT and $P_{s_0}$ as functions of the intensity of the transition rate stochastic component.

Limit cycle induced by multiplicative noise in a system of coupled Brownian motors

We study a model consisting of $N$ nonlinear oscillators with {\em global periodic} coupling and {\em local multiplicative} and additive noises. The model was shown to undergo a nonequilibrium phase transition towards a broken-symmetry phase exhibiting noise-induced "ratchet" behavior. A previous study \cite{[7]} focused on the relationship between the character of thehysteresis loop, the number of ``homogeneous'' mean-field solutions and the shape of the stationary mean-field probability distribution function. Here we show --as suggested by the absence of stable solutions when the load force is beyond a critical value-- the existence of a limit cycle induced by both:multiplicative noise and {\em global periodic} coupling.

Effect of Non-Gaussian Noise Sources in a Noise Induced Transition

Here we study a noise induced transition when the system is driven by a noise source taken as colored and non-Gaussian. We show--using both, a theoretical approximation and numerical simulations-- that there is a shift of the transition as the noise departs from the Gaussian behavior. Also, we confirm the reentrance effect found for colored Gaussian noise and show the behavior of the transition line in the phase-like diagram as the noise departs from Gaussianity in the large correlation time limit.

Strong enhancement of current, efficiency and mass separation in Brownian motors driven by non Gaussian noises

We study a Brownian motor driven by a colored non Gaussian noise source with a $q$-dependent probability distribution, where $q$ is a parameter indicating the departure from Gaussianity. For $q=1$ the noise is Gaussian (Ornstein--Uhlenbeck), while, for $q>1$, the probability distribution falls like a power law. In the latter case, we find a marked enhancement of both the current and the efficiency of the Brownian motor in the overdamped regime. We also analyze the case with inertia and show that, again for $q > 1$, a remarkable increase of the ratchet's mass separation capability is obtained.

Phase Transitions and Adsorption Isotherm in Multilayer Adsorbates with Lateral Interactions

We analyze here a model for an adsorbate system composed of many layers by extending a theoretical approach used to describe pattern formation on a monolayer of adsorbates with lateral interactions. The approach shows, in addition to a first order phase transition in the first layer, a transition in the second layer together with evidence of a "cascade" of transitions if more layers are included. The transition profiles, showing a staircase structure, corroborate this picture. The adsorption isotherm that came out of this approach is in qualitative agreement with numerical and experimental results.

Trapping Dynamics with Gated Traps: Stochastic Resonance-Like Phenomenon

We present a simple one-dimensional trapping model prompted by the problem of ion current across biological membranes. The trap is modeled mimicking the ionic channel membrane behaviour. Such voltage-sensitive channels are open or closed depending on the value taken by a potential. Here we have assumed that the external potential has two contributions: a determinist periodic and a stochastic one. Our model shows a resonant-like maximum when we plot the amplitude of the oscillations in the absorption current vs. noise intensity. The model was solved both numerically and using an analytic approximation and was found to be in good accord with numerical simulations.

Stochastic resonance in bistable systems: The effect of simultaneous additive and multiplicative correlated noises

We analyze the effect of the simultaneous presence of correlated additive and multiplicative noises on the stochastic resonance response of a modulated bistable system. We find that when the correlation parameter is also modulated, the system's response, measured through the output signal-to-noise ratio, becomes largely independent of the additive noise intensity.

Anomalous diffusion with absorption: Exact time-dependent solutions

Recently, analytical solutions of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing anomalous diffusion with an external linear force were found using a non extensive thermostatistical Ansatz. We have extended these solutions to the case when an homogeneous absorption process is also present. Some peculiar aspects of the interrelation between the deterministic force, the nonlinear diffusion and the absorption process are discussed.
