Faraday effect revisited: sum rules and convergence issues

This is the third paper of a series revisiting the Faraday effect. The question of the absolute convergence of the sums over the band indices entering the Verdet constant is considered. In general, sum rules and traces per unit volume play an important role in solid state physics, and they give rise to certain convergence problems widely ignored by physicists. We give a complete answer in the case of smooth potentials and formulate an open problem related to less regular perturbations.

On the skeleton method and an application to a quantum scissor

In the spectral analysis of few one dimensional quantum particles interacting through delta potentials it is well known that one can recast the problem into the spectral analysis of an integral operator (the skeleton) living on the submanifold which supports the delta interactions. We shall present several tools which allow direct insight into the spectral structure of this skeleton. We shall illustrate the method on a model of a two dimensional quantum particle interacting with two infinitely long straight wires which cross one another at a certain angle : the quantum scissor.

Diamagnetic expansions for perfect quantum gases II: uniform bounds

Consider a charged, perfect quantum gas, in the effective mass approximation, and in the grand-canonical ensemble. We prove in this paper that the generalized magnetic susceptibilities admit the thermodynamic limit for all admissible fugacities, uniformly on compacts included in the analyticity domain of the grand-canonical pressure. The problem and the proof strategy were outlined in \cite{3}. In \cite{4} we proved in detail the pointwise thermodynamic limit near $z=0$. The present paper is the last one of this series, and contains the proof of the uniform bounds on compacts needed in order to apply Vitali's Convergence Theorem.

Adiabatically switched-on electrical bias in continuous systems, and the Landauer-Buttiker formula

Consider a three dimensional system which looks like a cross-connected pipe system, i.e. a small sample coupled to a finite number of leads. We investigate the current running through this system, in the linear response regime, when we adiabatically turn on an electrical bias between leads. The main technical tool is the use of a finite volume regularization, which allows us to define the current coming out of a lead as the time derivative of its charge. We finally prove that in virtually all physically interesting situations, the conductivity tensor is given by a Landauer-B{ü}ttiker type formula.

The effect of time-dependent coupling on non-equilibrium steady states

Consider (for simplicity) two one-dimensional semi-infinite leads coupled to a quantum well via time dependent point interactions. In the remote past the system is decoupled, and each of its components is at thermal equilibrium. In the remote future the system is fully coupled. We define and compute the non equilibrium steady state (NESS) generated by this evolution. We show that when restricted to the subspace of absolute continuity of the fully coupled system, the state does not depend at all on the switching. Moreover, we show that the stationary charge current has the same invariant property, and derive the Landau-Lifschitz and Landauer-Buttiker formulas.

Optical second harmonic generation from Wannier excitons

Excitonic effects in the linear optical response of semiconductors are well-known and the subject of countless experimental and theoretical studies. For the technologically important second order nonlinear response, however, description of excitonic effects has proved to be difficult. In this work, a simplified three-band Wannier exciton model of cubic semiconductors is applied and a closed form expression for the complex second harmonic response function including broadening is derived. Our calculated spectra are found to be in excellent agreement with the measured response near the band edge. In addition, a very substantial enhancement of the nonlinear response is predicted for the transparency region.

Generalized susceptibilities for a perfect quantum gas

The system we consider here is a charged fermions gas in the effective mass approximation, and in grand-canonical conditions. We assume that the particles are confined in a three dimensional cubic box $Λ$ with side $L\geq 1$, and subjected to a constant magnetic field of intensity $ B \geq 0 $. Define the grand canonical generalized susceptibilities $χ_L^N$, $N\geq 1$, as successive partial derivatives with respect to $B$ of the grand canonical pressure $P_L$. Denote by $P_{\infty}$ the thermodynamic limit of $P_L$. Our main result is that $χ_L^N$ admit as thermodynamic limit the corresponding partial derivatives with respect to $B$ of $P_{\infty}$. In this paper we only give the main steps of the proofs, technical details will be given elsewhere.

On the Magnetization of a Charged Bose Gas in the Canonical Ensemble

Consider a charged Bose gas without self-interactions, confined in a three dimensional cubic box of side $L\geq 1$ and subjected to a constant magnetic field $B\neq 0$. If the bulk density of particles $ρ$ and the temperature $T$ are fixed, then define the canonical magnetization as the partial derivative with respect to $B$ of the reduced free energy. Our main result is that it admits thermodynamic limit for all strictly positive $ρ$, $T$ and $B$. It is also proven that the canonical and grand canonical magnetizations (the last one at fixed average density) are equal up to the surface order corrections.

Effective models for excitons in carbon nanotubes

We analyse the low lying spectrum of a model of excitons in carbon nanotubes. Consider two particles with an attractive Coulomb self-interaction, placed on an infinitely long cylinder. If the cylinder radius becomes small, the low lying spectrum is well described by a one-dimensional effective Hamiltonian which is exactly solvable.

Diamagnetic expansions for perfect quantum gases

In this work we study the diamagnetic properties of a perfect quantum gas in the presence of a constant magnetic field of intensity $B$. We investigate the Gibbs semigroup associated to the one particle operator at finite volume, and study its Taylor series with respect to the field parameter $ω:= eB/c$ in different topologies. This allows us to prove the existence of the thermodynamic limit for the pressure and for all its derivatives with respect to $ω$ (the so-called generalized susceptibilities).

The Faraday effect revisited: General theory

This paper is the first in a series revisiting the Faraday effect, or more generally, the theory of electronic quantum transport/optical response in bulk media in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The independent electron approximation is assumed. At zero temperature and zero frequency, if the Fermi energy lies in a spectral gap, we rigorously prove the Widom-Streda formula. For free electrons, the transverse conductivity can be explicitly computed and coincides with the classical result. In the general case, using magnetic perturbation theory, the conductivity tensor is expanded in powers of the strength of the magnetic field $B$. Then the linear term in $B$ of this expansion is written down in terms of the zero magnetic field Green function and the zero field current operator. In the periodic case, the linear term in $B$ of the conductivity tensor is expressed in terms of zero magnetic field Bloch functions and energies. No derivatives with respect to the quasi-momentum appear and thereby all ambiguities are removed, in contrast to earlier work.
