Ternary borides Nb$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$ and Ta$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$ with Kagome-type iron framework

Two new ternary borides $TM$$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$ ($TM$ = Nb, Ta) were synthesized by high-temperature thermal treatment of samples obtained by arc-melting. This new type of structure with space group $P$6/$mmm$, comprises $TM$ slabs containing isolated planar hexagonal [B$_6$] rings and iron centered $TM$ columns in a Kagome type of arrangement. Chemical bonding analysis in Nb$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$ by means of the electron localizability approach reveals two-center interactions forming the Kagome net of Fe and embedded B, while weaker multicenter bonding present between this net and Nb atoms. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below $T_N$ = 240 K for Nb$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$ and $T_N$ =265 K for Ta$_7$Fe$_3$B$_8$. Small remnant magnetization below 0.01 $μ_B$/f.u. is observed in the antiferromagnetic state. The bulk nature of the magnetic transitions was confirmed by the hyperfine splitting of the Mößbauer spectra, the sizable anomalies in the specific heat capacity, and the kinks in the resistivity curves. The high-field paramagnetic susceptibilities fitted by the Curie-Weiss law show effective paramagnetic moments $μ_{eff}$ about 3.1 $μ_B$/Fe in both compounds. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity also reveals metallic character of both compounds. Density functional calculations corroborate the metallic behaviour of both compounds and demonstrate the formation of a sizable local magnetic moment on the Fe-sites. They indicate the presence of both antiferro- and ferromagnetic interactions.

Chiral Quasiparticles at the Fermi Surface of the Weyl Semimetal TaAs

Tantalum arsenide is a member of the non-centrosymmetric monopnictides, which are putative Weyl semimetals. In these materials, three-dimensional chiral massless quasiparticles, the so-called Weyl fermions, are predicted to induce novel quantum mechanical phenomena, such as the chiral anomaly and topological surface states. However, their chirality is only well-defined if the Fermi level is close enough to the Weyl points that separate Fermi surface pockets of opposite chirality exist. In this article, we present the bulk Fermi surface topology of high quality single crystals of TaAs, as determined by angle-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen measurements combined with ab-initio band-structure calculations. Quantum oscillations originating from three different types of Fermi surface pocket were found in magnetization, magnetic torque, and mag- netoresistance measurements performed in magnetic fields up to 14 T and temperatures down to 1.8 K. Of these Fermi pockets, two are pairs of topologically non-trivial electron pockets around the Weyl points and one is a trivial hole pocket. Unlike the other members of the non-centrosymmetric monopnictides, TaAs is the first Weyl semimetal candidate with the Fermi energy suffciently close to both types of Weyl points to generate chiral quasiparticles at the Fermi surface.

Pressure-driven Superconductivity in Transition-metal Pentatelluride HfTe5

Layered transition-metal tellurides have attracted considerable attention because of their rich physics; for example, tungsten ditelluride WTe2 exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance; the tritelluride ZrTe3 shows a charge density wave transition at low temperature; and the pentatelluride ZrTe5 displays an enigmatic resistivity anomaly and large thermoelectric power. Recently some transition-metal tellurides are predicted to be quantum spin Hall insulators (e.g. ZrTe5 and HfTe5) or Weyl semimetals (e.g. WTe2 and MoTe2) and were subjected to intensive investigations. Here, we report on the discovery of superconductivity in hafnium pentatelluride HfTe5 under high pressure. We observe two structural phase transitions and metallization with superconductivity developing at around 5 GPa. A maximal critical temperature of 4.8 K is attained at a pressure of 20 GPa, and superconductivity persists up to the maximum pressure in our study (42 GPa). Theoretical calculations indicate that the superconductivity develops mainly in the Te atom layers at medium pressure and in the Te atom chains at high pressure.

Negative magnetoresistance without well-defined chirality in the Weyl semimetal TaP

Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are topological quantum states wherein the electronic bands linearly disperse around pairs of nodes, the Weyl points, of fixed (left or right) chirality. The recent discovery of WSM materials triggered an experimental search for the exotic quantum phenomenon known as the chiral anomaly. Via the chiral anomaly nonorthogonal electric and magnetic fields induce a chiral density imbalance that results in an unconventional negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, the chiral magnetic effect. Recent theoretical work suggests that this effect does not require well-defined Weyl nodes. Experimentally however, it remains an open question to what extent it survives when chirality is not well-defined, for example when the Fermi energy is far away from the Weyl points. Here, we establish the detailed Fermi surface topology of the recently identified WSM TaP via a combination of angle-resolved quantum oscillation spectra and band structure calculations. The Fermi surface forms spin-polarized banana-shaped electron and hole pockets attached to pairs of Weyl points. Although the chiral anomaly is therefore ill-defined, we observe a large negative magnetoresistance (NMR) appearing for collinear magnetic and electric fields as observed in other WSMs. In addition, we show experimental signatures indicating that such longitudinal magnetoresistance measurements can be affected by an inhomogeneous current distribution inside the sample in a magnetic field. Our results provide a clear framework how to detect the chiral magnetic effect.

Synthesis and Crystal Growth of Tetragonal Fe1.00Se

Single crystals of tetragonal Fe1.00Se were grown from polycrystalline material by chemical vapor transport reaction at temperatures below 723 K using AlCl3 as transport additive. The plate-shaped single crystals have edge lengths up to 4 mm. The single crystals display complete diamagnetic shielding factor 4piX = -1 below the superconducting transition.

Quantum Oscillations and Magnetic Reconstruction in the Delafossite PdCrO$_2$

We report quantum oscillation data on the metallic triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$. We find that, to very high accuracy, the observed frequencies of PdCrO$_2$ can be reproduced by reconstruction of the (nonmagnetic) PdCoO$_2$ Fermi surface into a reduced zone. The reduced zone corresponds to a magnetic cell containing six chromium sites, giving a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ in-plane reconstruction, and $\times 2$ interplane reconstruction. The interplane ordering represents a reduction in lattice symmetry, possibly to monoclinic, and an associated lattice distortion is expected. In addition, we report a magnetic transition under an applied in-plane field that is probably equivalent to the spin-flop transition reported for CuCrO$_2$, and present data on its field-angle dependence. We also report measurements of the resistivity of PdCrO$_2$ up to 500 K.
