Spin Nernst and thermal Hall effects of topological triplons in quantum dimer magnets on the maple-leaf and star lattices

We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the topological properties of triplon excitations in spin-1/2 dimer-singlet ground states defined on the maple leaf and star lattices. Our analysis is based on a model that includes Heisenberg interactions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, and an external magnetic field. In the absence of an in-plane DM vector, we demonstrate that the triplon Hamiltonian maps onto the magnon Hamiltonian of the Kagome lattice, inheriting its nontrivial topological characteristics, including Berry curvature and topological invariants such as the Z2 invariant and Chern numbers. This correspondence enables us to derive analytical expressions for the spin Nernst and thermal Hall conductivities at low temperatures. Furthermore, we explore the effects of realistic finite in-plane DM interactions, uncovering multiple topological transitions and a complex thermal Hall conductivity behavior, including potential sign reversals as functions of magnetic field and temperature. Using layer groups, we also provide a symmetry classification of the star and maple leaf lattices.

Phase diagram of a coupled trimer system at half filling using the Hubbard model

Flat band systems have recently attracted significant attention due to their instability under small perturbations, which can lead to the stabilization of many exotic quantum phases. We study a trimer ladder which shows a middle flat band in the absence of onsite Coulomb interaction. We investigate the quantum phases of the Hubbard model on this geometry using exact diagonalization (ED), density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), and perturbation theory. We construct a quantum phase diagram in the plane of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameter $t_2$ and onsite Coulomb interaction $U$, revealing five distinct quantum phases. At low $U$ and moderate to high magnitude of $t_2$, the system exhibits metallic behavior, while at large $U$ and small magnitude of $t_2$, it transitions to a ferrimagnetic insulator phase, similar to those observed in certain trimer materials. In the small $t_2$ limit, the Fermi energy is in the flat band, leading to localization of the electrons within the trimer. At low $U$ and small magnitude of $t_2$, the flat band mechanism favors insulating ferrimagnetism, whereas at large $U$, ferrimagnetic states emerge from singlet dimer formation between neighboring sites of a trimer and an isolated corner spin, which connect ferromagnetically. The insulating cell spin density wave phase displays an up-up-down-down spin configuration due to competing nearest neighbor hopping, $t_1$. Interestingly, in moderate $U$ and $|t_2|>0.3$, the ground state behaves like metallic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.

Disorder-free Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models: Integrability and a precursor of chaos

We introduce two disorder-free variants of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, demonstrate their integrability, and study their static and dynamical properties. Unlike diagrammatic techniques, the integrability of these models allows us to obtain dynamical correlation functions even when the number of Majorana fermions is finite. From the solutions, we find that out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) in these models exhibit exponential growth at early times, resembling that of quantum chaotic systems, such as those with disorder or external kick terms, despite their large $N$ behavior differing from that of typical chaotic systems. Conversely, our analysis shows no evidence of random-matrix behavior in level statistics or the spectral form factor. Our findings illustrate that the clean versions of the SYK models represent simple but nontrivial examples of disorder-free quantum many-body systems displaying chaos-like behavior of OTOCs.

Fate of Bosonic Topological Edge Modes in the Presence of Many-Body Interactions

Many magnetic materials are predicted to exhibit bosonic topological edge modes in their excitation spectra, because of the nontrivial topology of their magnon, triplon, or other quasi-particle band structures. However, there is a discrepancy between theory prediction and experimental observation, which suggests some underlying mechanism that intrinsically suppresses the expected experimental signatures, like the thermal Hall current. Many-body interactions that are not accounted for in the non-interacting quasi-particle picture are most often identified as the reason for the absence of the topological edge modes. Here we report persistent bosonic edge modes at the boundaries of a ladder quantum paramagnet with gapped triplon excitations in the presence of the full many-body interaction. We use tensor network methods to resolve topological edge modes in the time-dependent spin-spin correlations and the dynamical structure factor, which is directly accessible experimentally. We further show that signatures of these edge modes survive even when the non-interacting quasi-particle theory breaks down, discuss the topological phase diagram of the model, demonstrate the fractionalization of its low-lying excitations, and propose potential material candidates.

Weak ergodicity breaking with isolated integrable sectors

We consider spin chain models with local Hamiltonians that display weak ergodicity breaking. In these models, the majority of the eigenstates are thermal, but there is a distinguished subspace of the Hilbert space in which ergodicity is broken. We achieve such a weak breaking by embedding selected integrable models into larger Hilbert spaces of otherwise chaotic models. The integrable subspaces do not have a tensor product structure with respect to any spatial bipartition, therefore our constructions differ from certain trivial embeddings. We consider multiple mechanisms for such an embedding, and we also review previous examples in the literature. Curiously, all our examples can be seen as perturbations of models with Hilbert space fragmentation, such that the perturbed models are not fragmented anymore.

Exact eigenstates of multicomponent Hubbard models: SU($N$) magnetic $η$ pairing, weak ergodicity breaking, and partial integrability

We construct exact eigenstates of multicomponent Hubbard models in arbitrary dimensions by generalizing the $η$-pairing mechanism. Our models include the SU($N$) Hubbard model as a special case. Unlike the conventional two-component case, the generalized $η$-pairing mechanism permits the construction of eigenstates that feature off-diagonal long-range order and magnetic long-range order. These states form fragmented fermionic condensates due to a simultaneous condensation of multicomponent $η$ pairs. While the $η$-pairing states in the SU(2) Hubbard model are based on the $η$-pairing symmetry, the exact eigenstates in the $N$-component system with $N\geq 3$ arise not from symmetry of the Hamiltonian but from a spectrum generating algebra defined in a Hilbert subspace. We exploit this fact to show that the generalized $η$-pairing eigenstates do not satisfy the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and serve as quantum many-body scar states. This result indicates a weak breakdown of ergodicity in the $N$-component Hubbard models for $N\geq 3$. Furthermore, we show that these exact eigenstates constitute integrable subsectors in which the Hubbard Hamiltonian effectively reduces to a non-interacting model. This partial integrability causes various multicomponent Hubbard models to weakly break ergodicity. We propose a method of harnessing dissipation to distill the integrable part of the dynamics and elucidate a mechanism of non-thermalization caused by dissipation. This work establishes the coexistence of off-diagonal long-range order and SU($N$) magnetism in excited eigenstates of the multicomponent Hubbard models, which presents a possibility of novel out-of-equilibrium pairing states of multicomponent fermions. These models unveil a unique feature of quantum thermalization of multicomponent fermions, which can experimentally be tested with cold-atom quantum simulators.

Proposal for simulating quantum spin models with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction using Rydberg atoms and the construction of asymptotic quantum many-body scar states

We have developed a method to simulate quantum spin models with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) using Rydberg atom quantum simulators. Our approach involves a two-photon Raman transition and a transformation to the spin-rotating frame, both of which are feasible with current experimental techniques. As a model that can be simulated in our setup but not in solid-state systems, we consider an $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spin chain with a Hamiltonian consisting of the DMI and Zeeman energy. We study the magnetization curve in the ground state of this model and quench dynamics. Further, we show the existence of quantum many-body scar states and asymptotic quantum many-body scar states. The observed nonergodicity in this model demonstrates the importance of the highly tunable DMI that can be realized by the proposed quantum simulator.

Electric field induced thermal Hall effect of triplons in the quantum dimer magnets $X$CuCl$_{3}$ ($X =$ Tl, K)

We theoretically propose the electric field induced thermal Hall effect of triplons in the quantum dimer magnets $X$CuCl$_{3}$ ($X =$ Tl, K), which exhibit ferroelectricity in the Bose-Einstein condensation phase of triplons. The interplay between ferroelectricity and magnetism in these materials leads to the magnetoelectric effect, i.e., an electric-field induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction between spins on the same dimer. We argue that this intradimer DM interaction breaks the symmetry of the system in the absence of an electric field and gives rise to the thermal Hall effect, which can be detected in experimentally accessible electric and magnetic fields. We also show that the thermal Hall effect can be controlled by changing the strength or direction of the electric field.

Universality and two-body losses: lessons from the effective non-Hermitian dynamics of two particles

We study the late-time dynamics of two particles confined in one spatial dimension and subject to two-body losses. The dynamics is exactly described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that can be analytically studied both in the continuum and on a lattice. The asymptotic decay rate and the universal power-law form of the decay of the number of particles are exactly computed in the whole parameter space of the problem. When in the initial state the two particles are far apart, the average number of particles in the setup decays with time $t$ as $t^{-1/2}$; a different power law, $t^{-3/2}$, is found when the two particles overlap in the initial state. These results are valid both in the continuum and on a lattice, but in the latter case a logarithmic correction appears.

Exact hole-induced $SU(N)$ flavor-singlets in certain $U=\infty$ $SU(N)$ Hubbard models

We prove that the motion of a single hole induces $SU(N)$ flavor-singlets in the $U=\infty$ $SU(N)$ (Fermi) Hubbard model on a Husimi-like tree graph. The result is also generalized to certain $t$-$J$ models with antiferromagnetic interactions and singlet hopping terms typically neglected in the literature. This is an $SU(N)$ generalization of the "counter-Nagaoka theorem" introduced in [Phys. Rev. B 107, L140401 (2023)]. Our results suggest the existence of antiferromagnetic or resonating-valence-bond (RVB)-like polarons in the $t$-$J$ models on a more realistic non-bipartite lattice. Such antiferromagnetic/RVB polarons may be relevant for a novel strong-coupling mechanism of superconductivity or other exotic fractionalized phases of matter.

Spontaneous breaking of U(1) symmetry at zero temperature in one dimension

The Hohenberg--Mermin--Wagner theorem states that there is no spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries in spatial dimensions $d\leq2$ at finite temperature. At zero temperature, the classical/quantum mapping further implies the absence of continuous symmetry breaking in one dimension, which is also known as Coleman's theorem in the context of relativistic quantum field theories. Except for the classic example of the Heisenberg ferromagnet and its variations, there has been no known counterexample to the theorem. In this Letter, we discuss new examples that display spontaneous breaking of a U(1) symmetry at zero temperature, although the order parameter does not commute with the Hamiltonian unlike the Heisenberg ferromagnet. We argue that a more general condition for this behavior is that the Hamiltonian is frustration-free.

Jordan Decomposition of Non-Hermitian Fermionic Quadratic Forms

We give a rigorous proof of Conjecture 3.1 by Prosen [Prosen T 2010 J. Stat. Mech. $\textbf{2010}$ P07020] on the nilpotent part of the Jordan decomposition of a quadratic fermionic Liouvillian. We also show that the number of the Jordan blocks of each size can be expressed in terms of the coefficients of a polynomial called the $q$-binomial coefficient and describe the procedure to obtain the Jordan canonical form of the nilpotent part.

Quantum many-body scars in spin models with multibody interactions

We introduce and study several classes of quantum spin models with multi-body interactions that exhibit quantum many-body scars. The models are constructed by two different methods: one exploiting boundary states in integrable spin chains and the other based on a variant of existing methods such as restricted spectrum generating algebras. The first method allows us to construct deformations of the Majumdar-Ghosh and Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki models -- prototypes of frustration-free systems. With the second method, we construct a large class of spin-$1$ models involving scalar spin chirality in both one and two dimensions. Interestingly, in some cases, the models so constructed have towers of scar states of different character. For each example, we show that the scar states behave differently from thermal states by comparing their spectral and dynamical properties with those of other states. We also show that a superposition of the scar states constructed by the second method exhibits perfectly periodic revivals in the dynamics.

Flat-band ferromagnetism in the SU($N$) Hubbard and Kondo lattice models

We develop a general theory of flat-band ferromagnetism in the SU($N$) Fermi-Hubbard model, which describes the behavior of $N$-component fermions with SU($N$) symmetric interactions. We focus on the case where the single-particle spectrum has a flat band and establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the SU($N$) Hubbard model to exhibit ferromagnetism when the number of particles is the same as the degeneracy. We show that the occurrence of ferromagnetism is equivalent to the irreducibility of the projection matrix onto the space of single-particle ground states. We also demonstrate that this result can be exploited to establish a rigorous result for the ferromagnetic SU($N$) Kondo lattice model with a flat band. Specifically, we prove that when the SU($N$) Hubbard model is ferromagnetic, the ferromagnetic SU($N$) Kondo lattice model with the same hopping matrix also exhibits SU($N$) ferromagnetism.

Dissipative spin chain as a non-Hermitian Kitaev ladder

We derive exact results for the Lindblad equation for a quantum spin chain (one-dimensional quantum compass model) with dephasing noise. The system possesses doubly degenerate nonequilibrium steady states due to the presence of a conserved charge commuting with the Hamiltonian and Lindblad operators. We show that the system can be mapped to a non-Hermitian Kitaev model on a two-leg ladder, which is solvable by representing the spins in terms of Majorana fermions. This allows us to study the Liouvillian gap, the inverse of relaxation time, in detail. We find that the Liouvillian gap increases monotonically when the dissipation strength $ γ$ is small, while it decreases monotonically for large $ γ$, implying a kind of phase transition in the first decay mode. The Liouvillian gap and the transition point are obtained in closed form in the case where the spin chain is critical. We also obtain the explicit expression for the autocorrelator of the edge spin. The result implies the suppression of decoherence when the spin chain is in the topological regime.

Liouvillian gap and single spin-flip dynamics in the dissipative Fermi-Hubbard model

Motivated by recent progress in cold-atom experiments, we analyze the SU($N$) Fermi-Hubbard model on a $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice with two-body loss. By focusing on states near the ferromagnetic steady states, we obtain the Liouvillian gap in closed form for any $d$ and $N$. We also investigate the dynamics of a ferromagnetic initial state with a single spin flip both analytically and numerically. In particular, we show that, by decreasing the strength of the interaction and loss, the survival probability of the spin flip exhibits a crossover from the power-law decay to the exponential decay. We expect that our findings can be tested experimentally with ultracold alkaline-earth-like atoms in an optical lattice.

Duality, Criticality, Anomaly, and Topology in Quantum Spin-1 Chains

In quantum spin-1 chains, there is a nonlocal unitary transformation known as the Kennedy-Tasaki transformation $U_{\text{KT}}$, which defines a duality between the Haldane phase and the $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry-breaking phase. In this paper, we find that $U_{\text{KT}}$ also defines a duality between a topological Ising critical phase and a trivial Ising critical phase, which provides a "hidden symmetry breaking" interpretation for the topological criticality. Moreover, since the duality relates different phases of matter, we argue that a model with self-duality (i.e., invariant under $U_{\text{KT}}$) is natural to be at a critical or multicritical point. We study concrete examples to demonstrate this argument. In particular, when $H$ is the Hamiltonian of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, we prove that the self-dual model $H + U_{\text{KT}} H U_{\text{KT}}$ is exactly equivalent to a gapless spin-$1/2$ XY chain, which also implies an emergent quantum anomaly. On the other hand, we show that the topological and trivial Ising criticalities that are dual to each other meet at a multicritical point which is indeed self-dual.

Exact ground states for interacting Kitaev chains

We introduce a frustration-free, one-dimensional model of spinless fermions with hopping, p-wave superconducting pairing and alternating chemical potentials. The model possesses two exactly degenerate ground states even for finite system sizes. We present analytical results for the strong Majorana zero modes, the phase diagram and the topological order. Furthermore, we generalise our results to include interactions.
