Special components of Noether-Lefschetz loci

We take a sum $C_1+r C_2,\ r\in\mathbb Q$ of a line $C_1$ and a complete intersection curve $C_2$ of type $(3,3)$ inside a smooth surface of degree $8$ and with $C_1\cap C_2=\emptyset$. We gather evidences to the fact that for all except a finite number of $r$, the Noether-Lefschetz loci attached to the cohomology classes of $C_1+ r C_2$ are distinct $31$ codimensional subvarieties intersecting each other in a $32$ codimensional subvariety of the ambient space. The maximum codimension for components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus in this case is $35$, and hence, we provide a conjectural description of a counterexample to a conjecture of J. Harris. The methods used in this paper also produce in a rigorous way an infinite number of general components passing through the point representing the Fermat surface of degree $\leq 9$, and many non-reduced components for such degrees.

Hodge cycles for cubic hypersurfaces

We study an algebraic cycle of the form $Z_0= r {\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}+\check r \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}$, $r \in{\mathbb N},\check r \in{\mathbb Z},\ \ 1\leq r , |\check r |\leq 10,\ \ \gcd ( r ,\check r )=1$, inside the cubic Fermat variety $X_0$ of even dimension $n\geq 4$ and with $\dim\left ({\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\cap \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\right)=m$. We take a smooth deformation space $\sf S$ of $X_0$ such that the triple $(X_0, {\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2}, \check{\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2})$ becomes rigid. For $m=\frac{n}{2}-2$ and for many examples of $N\in{\mathbb N}$ and $n$ we show that the $N$-th order Hodge locus attached to $Z_0$ is smooth and reduced of positive dimension if and only if $( r ,\check r )=(1,-1)$. In this case, the underlying algebraic cycles are conjectured to be cubic ruled cycles. For $m=\frac{n}{2}-3$ the same happens for all choices of coefficients $ r $ and $\check r $ and we do not know what kind of algebraic cycles might produce such Hodge cycles. The first case gives us a conjectural description of a component of the Hodge locus, and the second case gives us strong computer assisted evidences for the existence of new Hodge cycles for cubic hypersurfaces. Whereas the well-known construction of Hodge cycles due to D. Mumford and A. Weil for CM abelian varieties, and Y. André's motivated cycles can be described in theoretical terms, the full proof of the existence of our Hodge cycle seems to be only possible with more powerful computing machines.

Integral Hodge conjecture for Fermat varieties

We describe an algorithm which verifies whether linear algebraic cycles of the Fermat variety generate the lattice of Hodge cycles. A computer implementation of this confirms the integral Hodge conjecture for quartic and quintic Fermat fourfolds. Our algorithm is based on computation of the list of elementary divisors of both the lattice of linear algebraic cycles, and the lattice of Hodge cycles written in terms of vanishing cycles, and observing that these two lists are the same.

On elliptic modular foliations, II

We give an example of a one dimensional foliation $\cal F$ of degree two in a Zariski open set of a four dimensional weighted projective space which has only an enumerable set of algebraic leaves. These are defined over rational numbers and are isomorphic to modular curves $X_0(d),\ d\in\Bbb B$ minus cusp points. As a by-product we get new models for modular curves for which we slightly modify an argument due to J. V. Pereira and give closed formulas for elements in their defining ideals. The general belief has been that such formulas do not exist and the emphasis in the literature has been on introducing faster algorithms to compute equations for small values of $d$.

Why should one compute periods of algebraic cycles?

In this article we show how the data of integrals of algebraic differential forms over algebraic cycles can be used in order to prove that algebraic and Hodge cycle deformations of a given algebraic cycle are equivalent. As an example, we prove that most of the Hodge and algebraic cycles of the Fermat sextic fourfold cannot be deformed in the underlying parameter space. We then take a difference of two linear cycles inside the Fermat variety, and gather evidences that the Hodge locus corresponding to this is smooth and reduced. This implies the existence of new algebraic cycles in the Fermat variety whose existence is predicted by the Hodge conjecture for all hypersurfaces, but not the Fermat variety itself.

Product formulas for weight two newforms

For a weight two newform $f$ attached to an elliptic curve $E$ defined over rational numbers we write $f=q\prod_{n=1}^\infty (1-q^n)^{g_n}, \ g_n\in\Z$ and we observe that for some special elliptic curves $g_n$ is an increasing sequence of positive integers.

Manifold Ways to Darboux-Halphen System

Many distinct problems give birth to Darboux-Halphen system of differential equations and here we review some of them. The first is the classical problem presented by Darboux and later solved by Halphen concerning finding infinite number of double orthogonal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The second is a problem in general relativity about gravitational instanton in Bianchi IX metric space. The third problem stems from the new take on the moduli of enhanced elliptic curves called Gauss-Manin connection in disguise developed by one of the authors and finally in the last problem Darboux-Halphen system emerges from the associative algebra on the tangent space of a Frobenius manifold.

Gauss-Manin connection in disguise: Noether-Lefschetz and Hodge loci

We give a classification of components of the Hodge locus in any parameter space of smooth projective varieties. This is done using determinantal varieties constructed from the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures (IVHS) of the underlying family. As a corollary we prove that the minimum codimension for the components of the Hodge locus in the parameter space of $m$-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with $d\geq 2+\frac{4}{m}$ and in a Zariski neighborhood of the point representing the Fermat variety, is obtained by the locus of hypersurfaces passing through an $\frac{m}{2}$-dimensional linear projective space. In the particular case of surfaces in the projective space of dimension three, this is a theorem of Green and Voisin. In this case our classification under a computational hypothesis on IVHS implies a weaker version of the Harris-Voisin conjecture which says that the set of special components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus is not Zariski dense in the parameter space.

Remarks on a theorem of Perron

For a linear differential equation with a mild condition on its singularities, we discuss generalized continued fractions converging to expressions in its solutions and their derivatives. In the case of an order two linear differential equation, this is the logarithmic derivative of the holomorphic solution near a singularity.

Calabi-Yau modular forms in limit: Elliptic Fibrations

We study the limit of Calabi-Yau modular forms, and in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. We then study two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds and describe the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. In the case of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds our approach gives a mathematical proof of many observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes starting with the work of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison. In the case of Calabi-Yau fourfolds we derive new identities not computed before.

Gauss-Manin connection in disguise: Calabi-Yau threefolds

We describe a Lie Algebra on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds enhanced with differential forms and its relation to the Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa holomorphic anomaly equation. In particular, we describe algebraic topological string partition functions $F_g^{alg}, g\geq 1$, which encode the polynomial structure of holomorphic and non-holomorphic topological string partition functions. Our approach is based on Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham cohomology and on the algebraic Gauss-Manin connection. In this way, we recover a result of Yamaguchi-Yau and Alim-Länge in an algebraic context. Our proofs use the fact that the special polynomial generators defined using the special geometry of deformation spaces of Calabi-Yau threefolds correspond to coordinates on such a moduli space. We discuss the mirror quintic as an example.

Automorphic forms for triangle groups: Integrality properties

We classify all primes appearing in the denominators of the Hauptmodul $J$ and modular forms for non-arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp. These primes have a congruence condition in terms of the order of the generators of the group. As a corollary we show that for the Hecke group of type $(2,m,\infty)$, the prime $p$ does not appear in the denominator of $J$ if and only if $p\equiv \pm 1\pmod m$.

Modular-type functions attached to Calabi-Yau varieties: integrality properties

We study the integrality properties of the coefficients of the mirror map attached to the generalized hypergeometric function $_{n}F_{n-1}$ with rational parameters and with a maximal unipotent monodromy. We present a conjecture on the $p$-integrality of the mirror map which can be verified experimentally. We prove its consequence on the $N$-integrality of the mirror map for the particular cases $1\leq n\leq 4$. For $n=2$ we obtain the Takeuchi's classification of arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp, and for $n=4$ we prove that $14$ examples of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau equations are the full classification of hypergeometric mirror maps with integral coefficients. As a by-product we get the integrality of the corresponding algebra of modular-type functions. These are natural generalizations of the algebra of classical modular and quasi-modular forms in the case $n=2$.

Automorphic forms for triangle groups

For triangle groups, the (quasi-)automorphic forms are known just as explicitly as for the modular group SL$(2,\bbZ)$. We collect these expressions here, and then interpret them using the Halphen differential equation. We study the arithmetic properties of their Fourier coefficients at cusps and Taylor coefficients at elliptic fixed-points --- in both cases integrality is related to the arithmeticity of the triangle group. As an application of our formulas, we provide an explicit modular interpretation of periods of 14 families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere.

Modular-type functions attached to mirror quintic Calabi-Yau varieties

In this article we study a differential algebra of modular-type functions attached to the periods of a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau varieties which is mirror dual to the universal family of quintic threefolds. Such an algebra is generated by seven functions satisfying functional and differential equations in parallel to the modular functional equations of classical Eisenstein series and the Ramanujan differential equation. Our result is the first example of automorphic-type functions attached to varieties whose period domain is not Hermitian symmetric. It is a reformulation and realization of a problem of Griffiths around seventies on the existence of automorphic functions for the moduli of polarized Hodge structures.

Quasi-modular forms attached to elliptic curves: Hecke operators

In this article we introduce Hecke operators on the differential algebra of geometric quasi-modular forms. As an application for each natural number $d$ we construct a vector field in six dimensions which determines uniquely the polynomial relations between the Eisenstein series of weight 2,4 and 6 and their transformation under multiplication of the argument by $d$, and in particular, it determines uniquely the modular curve of degree $d$ isogenies between elliptic curves.

Heun equations coming from geometry

We give a list of Heun equations which are Picard-Fuchs associated to families of algebraic varieties. Our list is based on the classification of families of elliptic curves with four singular fibers done by Herfurtner. We also show that pullbacks of hypergeometric functions by rational Belyi functions with restricted ramification data give rise to Heun equations.

Quasi-modular forms attached to Hodge structures

The space $D$ of Hodge structures on a fixed polarized lattice is known as Griffiths period domain and its quotient by the isometry group of the lattice is the moduli of polarized Hodge structures of a fixed type. When $D$ is a Hermition symmetric domain then we have automorphic forms on $D$, which according to Baily-Borel theorem, they give an algebraic structure to the mentioned moduli space. In this article we slightly modify this picture by considering the space $U$ of polarized lattices in a fixed complex vector space with a fixed Hodge filtration and polarization. It turns out that the isometry group of the filtration and polarization, which is an algebraic group, acts on $U$ and the quotient is again the moduli of polarized Hodge structures. This formulation leads us to the notion of quasi-automorphic forms which generalizes quasi-modular forms attached to elliptic curves.
