Double Field Theory Inspired Cosmology

Double field theory proposes a generalized spacetime action possessing manifest T-duality on the level of component fields. We calculate the cosmological solutions of double field theory with vanishing Kalb-Ramond field. It turns out that double field theory provides a more consistent way to construct cosmological solutions than the standard string cosmology. We construct solutions for vanishing and non-vanishing symmetry preserving dilaton potentials. The solutions assemble the pre- and post-big bang evolutions in one single line element. This novel feature provides a natural way for the theory to contain extra dimensions. Our results show a smooth evolution from an anisotropic early stage to an isotropic phase without any special initial conditions in contrast to previous models. In addition, we demonstrate that the contraction of the dual space automatically leads to both an inflation phase and a decelerated expansion of the ordinary space during different evolution stages.

Fermion's tunnelling with effects of quantum gravity

In this paper, using Hamilton-Jacobi method, we address the tunnelling of fermions in a 4-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. Base on the generalized uncertainty principle, we introduce the influence of quantum gravity. After solving the equation of motion of the spin 1/2 field, we derive the corrected Hawking temperature. It turns out that the correction depends not only on the black hole's mass but also on the mass (energy) of emitted fermions. It is of interest that, in our calculation, the quantum gravity correction decelerates the temperature increase during the radiation explicitly. This observation then naturally leads to the remnants in black hole evaporation. Our calculation shows that the residue mass is $\gtrsim M_p/β_0$, where $M_p$ is the Planck mass and $β_0$ is a dimensionless parameter accounting for quantum gravity effects. The evaporation singularity is then avoided.

Superluminal neutrinos and domain walls

In this letter, we propose that the recent measurement of superluminal neutrinos in OPERA could be explained by the existence of a domain wall which is left behind after the phase transition of some scalar field in the universe. The scalar field couples to the neutrino and photon field with different effective couplings. It causes different effective metrics and the emergence of superluminal neutrinos. Moreover, if the supernova and the earth are in the same plane parallel to the wall, or the thickness of the wall is much smaller than the distance from the supernova to the earth, the contradiction between OPERA and SN1987a can be reconciled.

Superluminal Neutrinos and Monopoles

In this letter, we show that superluminal neutrinos announced by OPERA could be explained by the existence of a monopole, which is left behind after the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phase transition of some scalar fields in the universe. We assume the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole couples to the neutrinos but not photon fields. The monopole introduces a different effective metric to the neutrinos from the one experienced by photons. We find that the superluminal propagation only exists in a very short distance from the monopole, about $10^3$ cm in OPERA. No matter how far they travel, neutrinos always arrive earlier than photons by the same amount of time, provided a monopole existing on or close to their trajectories. This conclusion can be tested by future experiments. The result reconciles the contradiction between OPERA and supernova neutrinos. We further exclude cosmic strings as a possible theoretical explanation.

Hidden conformal symmetry of extreme and non-extreme Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion black holes

The hidden conformal symmetry of extreme and non-extreme Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) black holes is addressed in this paper. For the non-extreme one, employing the wave equation of massless scalars, the conformal symmetry with left temperature $T_{L}=\frac{M}{2πa}$ and right temperature $T_{R}=\frac{\sqrt{M^{2}-a^{2}}}{2πa}$ in the near region is found. The conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken due to the periodicity of the azimuthal angle. The microscopic entropy is derived by the Cardy formula and is fully in consistence with the Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy law. The absorption cross section in the near region is calculated and exactly equals that in a 2D CFT. For the extreme case, by redefining the conformal coordinates, the duality between the solution space and CFT is studied. The microscopic entropy is found to exactly agree with the area-entropy law.

Hidden conformal symmetry of rotating charged black holes

Motivated by the recent work of the hidden conformal symmetry of the Kerr black hole, we investigate the hidden conformal symmetry of a Kerr-Sen black hole and a Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole. Our result shows the conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken due to the periodicity of the azimuthal angle. The absorption across section is in consistence with the finite temperature absorption cross section for a 2D CFT. The entropies of the black holes are reproduced by the Cardy formula.

The generalized uncertainty principle in the presence of extra dimensions

We argue that in the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) model, the parameter $β_0$ whose square root, multiplied by Planck length $\ell_p$, approximates the minimum measurable distance, varies with energy scales. Since minimal measurable length and extra dimensions are both suggested by quantum gravity theories, we investigate models based on GUP and one extra dimension, compactified with radius $ρ$. We obtain an inspiring relation $\sqrt{β_0} \ell_p/ρ\sim {\cal O}(1)$. This relation is also consistent with predictions at Planck scale and usual quantum mechanics scale. We also make estimations on the application range of the GUP model. It turns out that the minimum measurable length is exactly the compactification radius of the extra dimension.
