A tale of three diagonalizations

In addition to the diagonalization of a normal matrix by a unitary similarity transformation, there are two other types of diagonalization procedures that sometimes arise in quantum theory applications -- the singular value decomposition and the Autonne-Takagi factorization. In these pedagogical notes, we carry out each of these diagonalization procedures for the most general $2\times 2$ matrices for which the corresponding diagonalization is possible and provide explicit analytical results in each of the three cases.

Useful relations among the generators in the defining and adjoint representations of SU(N)

There are numerous relations among the generators in the defining and adjoint representations of SU(N). These include Casimir operators, formulae for traces of products of generators, etc. Due to the existence of the completely symmetric tensor $d_{abc}$ that arises in the study of the SU(N) Lie algebra, one can also consider relations that involve the adjoint representation matrix, $(D^a)_{bc}=d_{abc}$. In this review, we summarize many useful relations satisfied by the defining and adjoint representation matrices of SU(N). A few relations special to the case of N=3 are highlighted.

Basis-independent treatment of the complex 2HDM

The complex 2HDM (C2HDM) is the most general CP-violating two Higgs doublet model that possesses a softly-broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. However, the physical consequences of the model cannot depend on the basis of scalar fields used to define it. Thus, to get a better sense of the significance of the C2HDM parameters, we have analyzed this model by employing a basis-independent formalism. This formalism involves transforming to the Higgs basis (which is defined up to an arbitrary complex phase) and identifying quantities that are invariant with respect to this phase degree of freedom. Using this method, we have obtained the constraints that enforce the softly-broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. One can then relate the C2HDM parameters to basis-independent quantities up to a two-fold ambiguity. We then show how this remaining ambiguity is resolved. We also examine the possibility of spontaneous CP violation when the scalar potential of the C2HDM is explicitly CP-conserving. Basis-independent constraints are presented that govern the presence of spontaneous CP violation.

Implications of symmetries in the scalar sector

Symmetries play a very important rôle in Particle Physics. In extended scalar sectors, the existence of symmetries may permit the models to comply with the experimental constraints in a natural way, and at the same time reduce the number of free parameters. There is a strong interplay among internal symmetries of the scalar potential, its CP properties and mass degeneracies of the physical scalars. Some of these aspects were discussed in this talk.

Symmetries and Mass Degeneracies in the Scalar Sector

We explore some aspects of models with two and three SU(2) scalar doublets that lead to mass degeneracies among some of the physical scalars. In Higgs sectors with two scalar doublets, the exact degeneracy of scalar masses, without an artificial fine-tuning of the scalar potential parameters, is possible only in the case of the inert doublet model (IDM), where the scalar potential respects a global U(1) symmetry that is not broken by the vacuum. In the case of three doublets, we introduce and analyze the replicated inert doublet model, which possesses two inert doublets of scalars. We then generalize this model to obtain a scalar potential, first proposed by Ivanov and Silva, with a CP4 symmetry that guarantees the existence of pairwise degenerate scalar states among two pairs of neutral scalars and two pairs of charged scalars. Here, CP4 is a generalized CP symmetry with the property that $({\rm CP}4)^n$ is the identity operator only for integer $n$ values that are multiples of 4. The form of the CP4-symmetric scalar potential is simplest when expressed in the Higgs basis, where the neutral scalar field vacuum expectation value resides entirely in one of the scalar doublet fields. The symmetries of the model permit a term in the scalar potential with a complex coefficient that cannot be removed by any redefinition of the scalar fields within the class of Higgs bases (in which case, we say that no real Higgs basis exists). A striking feature of the CP4-symmetric model is that it preserves CP even in the absence of a real Higgs basis, as illustrated by the cancellation of the contributions to the CP violating form factors of the effective ZZZ and ZWW vertices.

Heavy Higgs boson decays in the alignment limit of the 2HDM

The Standard Model (SM)-like couplings of the observed Higgs boson impose strong constraints on the structure of any extended Higgs sector. We consider the theoretical properties and the phenomenological implications of a generic two Higgs doublet model (2HDM). This model constitutes a simple and attractive extension of the SM that is consistent with the observation of the SM-like Higgs boson and precision electroweak observables, while providing a potential new source of CP-violation. In this paper we focus on the so-called Higgs alignment limit of the generic 2HDM, where the neutral scalar field~$H_1$, with the tree-level couplings of the SM Higgs boson, is a mass eigenstate that is aligned in field space with the direction of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. The properties of the two other heavier neutral Higgs scalars, $H_2$ and $H_3$, in the alignment limit of the 2HDM are also elucidated. It is shown that the couplings of $H_2$ and $H_3$ in the alignment limit are tightly constrained and correlated. For example, in the exact alignment limit at tree level, for bosonic final states $\text{BR}(H_{2,3} \to W^+W^-, ZZ, H_1 Z) = 0$ and $\text{BR}(H^\pm \to W^\pm H_1) = 0$, whereas for fermionic final states $Γ(H_2 \to f\bar f)/Γ(H_3 \to f\bar f) \sim M_2/M_3$ (where $M_α$ is the mass of $H_α$). In some cases, the results of the alignment limit differ depending on whether or not alignment is achieved via the decoupling of heavy scalar states. In particular, in the exact alignment limit without decoupling $\text{BR}(H_{2,3}\to H_1 H_1)=0$, whereas these branching ratios are nonzero in the decoupling regime. Observables that could be used to test the alignment scenario at the LHC are defined and discussed. The couplings of the Higgs bosons away from their exact alignment values are determined to leading order, and some consequences are elucidated.

Multi-Higgs doublet models: the Higgs-fermion couplings and their sum rules

This is the second of a series of papers that explores the physical parameterization, sum rules and unitarity bounds arising from a non-minimal scalar sector of the Standard Model (SM) that consists of N Higgs doublets. In this paper, we focus on the structure and implication of the Yukawa interactions that couple the N scalar doublets to the SM fermions. We employ the charged Higgs basis, which is defined as the basis of scalar fields such that the neutral scalar field vacuum expectation value resides entirely in one of the N scalar doublet fields, and the charged components of the remaining N-1 scalar doublet fields are the physical (mass-eigenstate) charged Higgs fields. Based on the structure of the Yukawa Lagrangian of the model (and as a consequence of tree-level unitarity), one may deduce numerous sum rules, several of which have not appeared previously in the literature. These sum rules can be used to uncover intimate relations between the structure of the Higgs-fermion couplings and the scalar/gauge couplings. In particular, we show that the approximate alignment limit, in which the W+W- and ZZ couplings to the observed Higgs boson are approximately SM-like, imposes significant constraints on the Higgs-fermion couplings.

Approximate Higgs alignment without decoupling

The properties of the Higgs boson, h(125), observed in LHC data are consistent with Standard Model predictions. Consequently, if additional Higgs bosons are present, then the direction of h(125) in field space must be approximately aligned with the direction of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. One way to achieve approximate Higgs alignment is in the decoupling limit, where all additional Higgs scalars are significantly heavier than the h(125). In this presentation, the viability of approximate Higgs alignment without decoupling is addressed.

Multi-Higgs doublet models: physical parametrization, sum rules and unitarity bounds

If the scalar sector of the Standard Model is non-minimal, one might expect multiple generations of the hypercharge-1/2 scalar doublet analogous to the generational structure of the fermions. In this work, we examine the structure of a Higgs sector consisting of N Higgs doublets (where N \geq 2). It is particularly convenient to work in the so-called charged Higgs basis, in which the neutral Higgs vacuum expectation value resides entirely in the first Higgs doublet, and the charged components of remaining N-1 Higgs doublets are mass-eigenstate fields. We elucidate the interactions of the gauge bosons with the physical Higgs scalars and the Goldstone bosons and show that they are determined by an Nx2N matrix. This matrix depends on (N-1)(2N-1) real parameters that are associated with the mixing of the neutral Higgs fields in the charged Higgs basis. Among these parameters, N-1 are unphysical (and can be removed by rephasing the physical charged Higgs fields), and the remaining 2(N-1)^2 parameters are physical. We also demonstrate a particularly simple form for the cubic interaction and some of the quartic interactions of the Goldstone bosons with the physical Higgs scalars. These results are applied in the derivation of Higgs coupling sum rules and tree-level unitarity bounds that restrict the size of the quartic scalar couplings. In particular, new applications to three Higgs doublet models with an order-4 CP symmetry and with a Z_3 symmetry, respectively, are presented.

The Impact of Two-Loop Effects on the Scenario of MSSM Higgs Alignment without Decoupling

In multi-Higgs models, the properties of one neutral scalar state approximate those of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson in a limit where the corresponding scalar field is roughly aligned in field space with the scalar doublet vacuum expectation value. In a scenario of alignment without decoupling, a SM-like Higgs boson can be accompanied by additional scalar states whose masses are of a similar order of magnitude. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), alignment without decoupling can be achieved due to an accidental cancellation of tree-level and radiative loop-level effects. In this paper we assess the impact of the leading two-loop O(alpha_s h_t^2) corrections on the Higgs alignment condition in the MSSM. These corrections are sizable and important in the relevant regions of parameter space and furthermore give rise to solutions of the alignment condition that are not present in the approximate one-loop description. We provide a comprehensive numerical comparison of the alignment condition obtained in the approximate one-loop and two-loop approximations, and discuss its implications for phenomenologically viable regions of the MSSM parameter space.

High scale flavor alignment in two-Higgs doublet models and its phenomenology

The most general two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) includes potentially large sources of flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) that must be suppressed in order to achieve a phenomenologically viable model. The flavor alignment ansatz postulates that all Yukawa coupling matrices are diagonal when expressed in the basis of mass-eigenstate fermion fields, in which case tree-level Higgs mediated FCNCs are eliminated. In this work, we explore models with the flavor alignment condition imposed at a very high energy scale, which results in the generation of Higgs-mediated FCNCs via renormalization group running from the high energy scale to the electroweak scale. Using the current experimental bounds on flavor changing observables, constraints are derived on the aligned 2HDM parameter space. In the favored parameter region, we analyze the implications for Higgs boson phenomenology.

Scrutinizing the Alignment Limit in Two-Higgs-Doublet Models. Part 1: $m_h = 125$ GeV

In the alignment limit of a multi-doublet Higgs sector, one of the Higgs mass eigenstates aligns with the direction of the scalar field vacuum expectation values, and its couplings approach those of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson. We consider CP-conserving Two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDMs) of Type I and Type II near the alignment limit in which the lighter of the two CP-even Higgs bosons, $h$, is the SM-like state observed at 125 GeV. In particular, we focus on the 2HDM parameter regime where the coupling of $h$ to gauge bosons approaches that of the SM. We review the theoretical structure and analyze the phenomenological implications of the regime of alignment limit without decoupling, in which the other Higgs scalar masses are not significantly larger than $m_h$ and thus do not decouple from the effective theory at the electroweak scale. For the numerical analysis, we perform scans of the 2HDM parameter space employing the software packages 2HDMC and Lilith, taking into account all relevant pre-LHC constraints, the latest constraints from the measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs signal at the LHC, as well as the most recent limits coming from searches for heavy Higgs-like states. We contrast these results with the alignment limit achieved via the decoupling of heavier scalar states, where $h$ is the only light Higgs scalar. Implications for Run 2 at the LHC, including expectations for observing the other scalar states, are also discussed.

The Light and Heavy Higgs Interpretation of the MSSM

We perform a parameter scan of the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (pMSSM) with eight parameters taking into account the experimental Higgs boson results from Run I of the LHC and further low-energy observables. We investigate various MSSM interpretations of the Higgs signal at 125 GeV. First, we consider the case where the light CP-even Higgs boson of the MSSM is identified with the discovered Higgs boson. In this case it can impersonate the SM Higgs-like signal either in the decoupling limit, or in the limit of alignment without decoupling. In the latter case, the other states in the Higgs sector can also be light, offering good prospects for upcoming LHC searches and for searches at future colliders. Second, we demonstrate that the heavy CP-even Higgs boson is still a viable candidate to explain the Higgs signal - albeit only in a highly constrained parameter region, that will be probed by LHC searches for the CP-odd Higgs boson and the charged Higgs boson in the near future. As a guidance for such searches we provide new benchmark scenarios that can be employed to maximize the sensitivity of the experimental analysis to this interpretation.

Future Higgs Studies: A Theorist's Outlook

We examine some of the theoretical and phenomenological implications of the Higgs boson discovery and discuss what these imply for future Higgs studies at the LHC and future colliders. In particular, one of the outstanding unanswered questions is whether additional scalars beyond the observed Higgs boson are present in the spectrum of fundamental particles. Any theory of a non-minimal Higgs sector must possess a scalar state whose properties are approximately those of the Standard Model Higgs boson. This can be achieved in the so-called alignment limit of the extended scalar sector. Examples of scalar sectors in which an approximate alignment limit is achieved are surveyed.

The Higgs data and the Decoupling Limit

The Higgs data analyzed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations suggest that the scalar state discovered in 2012 is a Standard Model (SM)--like Higgs boson. Nevertheless, there is still significant room for Higgs physics beyond the Standard Model. Many approaches to electroweak symmetry breaking possess a decoupling limit in which the properties of the lightest CP-even Higgs scalar approach those of the SM Higgs boson. In some cases, an apparent SM-like Higgs signal can also arise in a regime that may not be governed by the decoupling limit. One such scenario can be realized if the observed Higgs signal is a result of two unresolved nearly-mass-degenerate scalar states. The general two-Higgs doublet model provides a useful framework for studying the decoupling limit and possible departures from SM-like Higgs behavior. The implications for current and future Higgs data are briefly considered.

Perturbation Theory in Supersymmetric QED: Infrared Divergences and Gauge Invariance

We study some aspects of perturbation theory in $N=1$ supersymmetric abelian gauge theories with massive charged matter. In general gauges, infrared (IR) divergences and nonlocal behavior arise in 1PI diagrams, associated with a $1/k^4$ term in the propagator for the vector superfield. We examine this structure in supersymmetric QED. The IR divergences are gauge-dependent and must cancel in physical quantities like the electron pole mass. We demonstrate that cancellation takes place in a nontrivial way, amounting to a reorganization of the perturbative series from powers of $e^2$ to powers of $e$. We also show how these complications are avoided in cases where a Wilsonian effective action can be defined.

Partially Natural Two Higgs Doublet Models

It is possible that the electroweak scale is low due to the fine-tuning of microscopic parameters, which can result from selection effects. The experimental discovery of new light fundamental scalars other than the Standard Model Higgs boson would seem to disfavor this possibility, since generically such states imply parametrically worse fine-tuning with no compelling connection to selection effects. We discuss counterexamples where the Higgs boson is light because of fine-tuning, and a second scalar doublet is light because a discrete symmetry relates its mass to the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson. Our examples require new vectorlike fermions at the electroweak scale, and the models possess a rich electroweak vacuum structure. The mechanism that we discuss does not protect a small CP-odd Higgs mass in split or high-scale supersymmetry-breaking scenarios of the MSSM due to an incompatibility between the discrete symmetries and holomorphy.

New LHC Benchmarks for the CP-conserving Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We introduce a strategy to study the parameter space of the general, CP-conserving, two-Higgs-doublet Model (2HDM) with a softly broken Z_2-symmetry by means of a new "hybrid" basis. In this basis the input parameters are the measured values of the mass of the observed Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs boson and its coupling strength to vector boson pairs, the mass of the second CP-even Higgs boson, the ratio of neutral Higgs vacuum expectation values, and three additional dimensionless parameters. Using the hybrid basis, we present numerical scans of the 2HDM parameter space where we survey available parameter regions and analyze model constraints. From these results, we define a number of benchmark scenarios that capture different aspects of non-standard Higgs phenomenology that are of interest for future LHC Higgs searches.
