Group Theoretic Constructions of Singular Set in a Long Range Segregation Model

In this paper, we construct several explicit examples of singular sets of Hausdorff dimension $(n-2)$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ on free boundaries for an elliptic system modeling long range segregation. The system has been previously studied by Caffarelli, Patrizi and Quitalo in \cite{CL2} for the regularity of the free boundary in dimension two, and by the author and Torres in \cite{ChPaTo26_2} for the partial regularity in higher dimensions. However, the dimension of the singular set is unknown, and no concrete examples of singular set are known in the literature due to the nonlocal nature of the elliptic system. In this paper, we overcome this difficulty by rigidity and finite group action. As a byproduct of our result, we see that singular points can exist for the model in any dimensions. We also show that our method can be applied to the study of the singular set in the adjacent model. Finally, we also discuss some related open problems for future studies.

The Free Boundary in a Higher-Dimensional Long-Range Segregation Model

We consider a system of elliptic equations, depending on a small parameter $\eps$, that models long-range segregation of populations. The diffusion is governed by the Laplacian. This system was previously investigated by Caffarelli, Patrizi, and Quitalo in \cite{CL2} as a model in population dynamics, and they established the regularity of the free boundary in two dimensions. In this paper we study the free boundary in the higher dimensional case. We extend the concept of angles and asymptotic cones to higher dimensions, and give a characterization of regular and singular points in terms of their densities and angles. We obtain a structure result of the free boundary and show that, if the angles at the singular points are away from $\frac{n\omega_n}{2}$, the regular set is open in the free boundary and locally a $C^1$ manifold of dimension $n-1$. We also show that, if the supports of the populations are convex, they are convex polytopes. A weak form of the equality of angles for the convex configuration is also derived.

A nonlinear model for long-range segregation

We study a system of fully nonlinear elliptic equations, depending on a small parameter $\eps$, that models long-range segregation of populations. The diffusion is governed by the negative Pucci operator. In the linear case, this system was previously investigated by Caffarelli, the second author, and Quitalo in \cite{CL2} as a model in population dynamics. We establish the existence of solutions and prove convergence as $\eps\to0^+$ to a free boundary problem in which populations remain segregated at a positive distance. In addition, we show that the supports of the limiting functions are sets of finite perimeter and satisfy a semi-convexity property.

Periodic Points of Diagonal and Permutation Operators

We first give a condition for a normal operator on a Hilbert space to have no nonzero periodic points, then we give a characterization of normal operators with the whole space as periodic points. We proceed to study the structure of periodic points of the diagonal operators and the permutation operators with examples. Moreover, it is also shown that the set of all diagonal operators with the whole space as periodic points is dense in the set of all unitary diagonal operators.
