On Circular Numerical Ranges of Companion Matrices with Repeated Eigenvalues

We prove that if an $n\times n\ (n > 3)$ companion matrix $A$ with the spectrum $σ(A) = \{ a \}$ has a circular numerical range, then $A$ is the Jordan block. This problem can be described by examining zeros of the Laurent polynomial arising from geometric properties of the numerical range. The difficulty is that the relevant Laurent coefficients involve both the repeated eigenvalue $a$ and the radius parameter $λ$, so direct coefficient comparison does not isolate $a$. We address this by decomposing the relevant matrix into a tridiagonal Toeplitz part plus a rank-two update and using Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. This reduction yields an explicit Laurent-coefficient formula whose vanishing under the circularity condition gives $a=0$. Furthermore, we extend this result when the spectrum is $σ(A) = \{0, a\}$ with algebraic multiplicities $n-m$ and $m$, respectively.

Global Classical Solutions Near Vacuum to the Initial-Boundary Value Problem of Isentropic Supersonic Flows through Divergent Ducts

In this paper, we study the global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions near vacuum for the initial-boundary value problem modeling isentropic supersonic flows through divergent ducts. The governing equations are the compressible Euler equations with a small parameter, which can be written as a hyperbolic system in terms of the Riemann invariants with a non-dissipative source. We provide a new result for the global existence of classical solutions to initial-boundary value problems of non-dissipative hyperbolic balance laws without the assumption of small data. The work is based on the local existence, the maximum principle and the uniform a priori estimates obtained by the generalized Lax transformations. The asymptotic behavior of classical solutions is also shown by studying the behavior of Riemann invariants along each characteristic curve and vertical line. The results can be applied to the spherically symmetric solutions to N-dimensional compressible Euler equations. Numerical simulations are provided to support our theoretical results.

Calculation of point defects in rutile TiO2 by the Screened Exchange Hybrid Functional

The formation energies of the oxygen vacancy and titanium interstitial in rutile TiO2 were calculated by the screened exchange (sX) hybrid density functional method, which gives a band gap of 3.1 eV, close to the experimental value. The O vacancy gives rise to a gap state lying 0.7 eV below the conduction band edge, whose charge density is localised around the two of three Ti atoms next to the vacancy. The Ti interstitial generates four defect states in the gap, whose unpaired electrons lie on the interstitial and the adjacent Ti 3d orbitals. The formation energy for the neutral O vacancy is 1.9 eV for the O-poor chemical potential, and similar to that of the neutral Ti interstitial, and has a lower formation energy for Ti interstitial under O-rich conditions. This indicates that both the O vacancy and Ti interstitial are relevant for oxygen deficiency in rutile TiO2 but the O vacancy will dominate under O-rich conditions. This resolves the questions about defect localisation and defect predominance in the literature.

Structural study in Highly Compressed BiFeO3 Epitaxial Thin Films on YAlO3

We report a study on the thermodynamic stability and structure analysis of the epitaxial BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films grown on YAlO3 (YAO) substrate. First we observe a phase transition of MC-MA-T occurs in thin sample (<60 nm) with an utter tetragonal-like phase (denoted as MII here) with a large c/a ratio (~1.23). Specifically, MII phase transition process refers to the structural evolution from a monoclinic MC structure at room temperature to a monoclinic MA at higher temperature (150oC) and eventually to a presence of nearly tetragonal structure above 275oC. This phase transition is further confirmed by the piezoforce microscopy measurement, which shows the rotation of polarization axis during the phase transition. A systematic study on structural evolution with thickness to elucidate the impact of strain state is performed. We note that the YAO substrate can serve as a felicitous base for growing T-like BFO because this phase stably exists in very thick film. Thick BFO films grown on YAO substrate exhibit a typical "morphotropic-phase-boundary"-like feature with coexisting multiple phases (MII, MI, and R) and a periodic stripe-like topography. A discrepancy of arrayed stripe morphology in different direction on YAO substrate due to the anisotropic strain suggests a possibility to tune the MPB-like region. Our study provides more insights to understand the strain mediated phase co-existence in multiferroic BFO system.
