Softening of Spin-Wave Stiffness near the Ferromagnetic Phase Transition in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors

Employing the self-consistent Green's function approach, we studied the temperature dependence of the spin-wave stiffness in diluted magnetic semiconductors. Note that the Green's function approach includes the spatial and temperature fluctuations simultaneously which was not possible within conventional Weiss mean-field theory. It is rather interesting that we found the stiffness becomes dramatically softened as the critical temperature is approached, which seems to explain the mysterious sharp drop of magnetization curves in samples within diffusive regime.

Renormalization Group Potential for Quasi-One-Dimensional Correlated Systems

We studied the correlated quasi-one-dimensional systems by one-loop renormalization group techniques in weak coupling. In contrast to conventional g-ology approach, we formulate the theory in terms of bilinear currents and obtain all possible interaction vertices. Furthermore, the one-loop renormalization group equations are derived by operator product expansions of these currents at short length scale. It is rather remarkable that these coupled non-linear equations, after appropriate rescaling, can be casted into potential flows. The existence of what we nicknamed "RG potential" provides a natural explanation of the emergent symmetry enhancement in ladder systems. Further implications arisen from the RG potential are also discussed at the end.

Phonons in Hubbard ladders studied within the framework of the one-loop renormalization group

We study the effects of phonons in $N$-leg Hubbard ladders within the framework of a one-loop renormalization group. In particular, we explicitly demonstrate that the role of phonons changes {\em qualitatively} even in the simplest two-leg ladder, as compared to the single-chain system where phonons always dominate. Our numerical results suggest that in the spin-gapped phase of the two-leg ladder, the opening of the spin gap by electron-electron interaction also drives the electron-phonon interaction to strong coupling, but in a {\em subdominant} fashion. Therefore, even though the inclusion of phonons does not alter the phase, their subdominant relevance strongly renormalizes some physical properties below the energy scale of the spin gap. This might shine some light on the recent experiments showing an anomalous isotope effects in high-temperature superconductors.

Direct Measurement of Spatial Distortions of Charge Density Waves in K0.3MoO3

Using X-ray scattering and the technique of multiple diffreactions, we revisit the dynamical transition of charge density waves (CDWs) in K0.3MoO3 under applied voltages. In addition to the usual transport and half width (of Bragg peaks) measurements, we also measure the triplet phase by three-wave diffraction, which provides, for the first time, the {\em direct} evidence for the spatial distortions of CDWs. This novel and sensitive technique developed here can be applied to general periodic media, including stripes in high temperature superconductors, and provide a new perspective into interesting phenomena in these materials.

Ground-State Degeneracy of Correlated Insulators with Edges

Using the topological flux insertion procedure, the ground-state degeneracy of an insulator on a periodic lattice with filling factor $ν=p/q$ was found to be at least $q$-fold. Applying the same argument in a lattice with edges, we show that the degeneracy is modified by the additional edge density $ν_{\mysw{E}}$ associated with the open boundaries. In particular, we demonstrate that these edge corrections may even make an insulator with integer bulk filling degenerate.

Potential Flow of Renormalization Group in Quasi-One-Dimensional Systems

We address the issue why the phase diagrams for quasi-one-dimensional systems are rather simple, while the renormalization group equations behind the scene are non-linear and messy looking. The puzzle is answered in two steps -- we first demonstrate that the complicated coupled flow equations are simply described by a potential $V(h_i)$, in an appropriate basis for the interaction couplings $h_i$. The renormalization-group potential is explicitly constructed by introducing the Majorana fermion representation. The existence of the potential prevents chaotic behaviors and other exotic possibilities such as limit cycles. Once the potential is obtained, the ultimate fate of the flows are described by a special set of fixed-ray solutions and the phase diagram is determined by Abelian bosonization. Extension to strong coupling regime and comparison with the Zamolodchikov c-theorem are discussed at the end.

Andreev Edge State on Semi-Infinite Triangular Lattice: Detecting the Pairing Symmetry in Na_0.35CoO_2.yH_2O

We study the Andreev edge state on the semi-infinite triangular lattice with different pairing symmetries and boundary topologies. We find a rich phase diagram of zero energy Andreev edge states that is a unique fingerprint of each of the possible pairing symmetries. We propose to pin down the pairing symmetry in recently discovered Na_xCoO_2 material by the Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling spectroscopy for the edge state. A surprisingly rich phase diagram is found and explained by a general gauge argument and mapping to 1D tight-binding model. Extensions of this work are discussed at the end.

Spiral Exchange Interaction in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Junction

We studied the exchange interactions mediated by polarized itinerant carriers in diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) junction. In contrast to the ordinary RKKY oscillations, the induced moment possesses an interesting spiral motion, accompanied with angular oscillations. The spiral motion remains robust in the entire $T<T_{c}$ regime while the oscillatory motion gets enhanced as $T \to T_{c}$. To explore the novel phenomena, we propose a ferromagnet/DMS/ferromagnet junction would bring out interesting spin-dependent transport properties and possible applications in spintronics.

Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor at Finite Temperature

We studied the diluted magnetic semiconductor by the self-consistent Green's function approach, which treats the spin-wave kinematics appropriately at finite temperatures. The critical temperature can be obtained by a simple formula in a wide range of parameter space. In addition, the magnetization curve versus temperature is concave, which is dramatically different from the usual convex shape. Finally, we discuss the possibility of generalizing the current theory to include the realistic band structure, electronic correlations and disorders in a systematic way.

Semiclassical Quantization Rule for Bound-State Spectrum in Quantum Dots: Scattering Phase Approximation

We study the quantum propagator in the semiclassical limit with sharp confining potentials. Including the energy-dependent scattering phase due to sharp confining potential, the modified Van Vleck's formula is derived. We also discuss the close relations among quantum statistics, discrete gauge symmetry, and hard-wall constraints. Most of all, we formulate a new quantization rule that applies to {\it both} smooth and sharp boundary potentials. It provides an easy way to compute quantized energies in the semiclassical limit and is extremely useful for many physical systems.

Ground-state properties of nanographite systems with zigzag-shaped edges

A π-electron network in nanographite systems with zigzag edges exhibits strongly localized edge states, which are expected to have peculiar properties. We study effects of electron-electron interactions on ground-state properties of the systems by means of the weak-coupling renormalization group and the density-matrix renormalization-group method. It is shown that the ground state is a spin-singlet Mott insulator with finite charge and spin gaps. We also find that the edge states are robust against the electronic correlations, resulting in edge effective spins which can flip almost freely. The schematic picture for the low-energy physics of the systems is discussed.

Berry Phases of Classical Trajectories in the Presence of Hard-Wall Boundaries

We study the quantum propagator in the semiclassical limit with hard-wall potentials. We show that, upon each reflection by the hard wall, a Berry phase $π$ is accumulated and leads to interferences between different classical trajectories. Including the Berry phase caused by the hard walls, the modified Van Vleck's formula is derived.

Limits on the Curie temperature of (III,Mn)V ferromagnetic semiconductors

Mean-field-theory predicts that the Curie temperature T_c of a (III,Mn)V ferromagnet will be proportional to the valence band density-of-states of its host (III,V) semiconductor, suggesting a route toward room-temperature ferromagnetism in this materials class. In this Letter, we use theoretical estimates of spin-wave energies and Monte-Carlo simulations to demonstrate that long-wavelength collective fluctuations, neglected by mean-field theory, will limit the critical temperature in large density-of-states materials. We discuss implications for high T_c searches.

Theory of Ferromagnetism in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors

Carrier-induced ferromagnetism has been observed in several (III,Mn)V semiconductors. We review the theoretical picture of these ferromagnetic semiconductors that emerges from a model with kinetic-exchange coupling between localized Mn spins and valence-band carriers. We discuss the applicability of this model, the validity of a mean-field approximation for its interaction term widely used in the literature, and validity limits for the simpler RKKY model in which only Mn spins appear explicitly. Our conclusions are based in part on our analysis of the dependence of the system's elementary spin excitations on carrier density and exchange-coupling strength. The analogy between this system and spin-model ferrimagnets is explored. Finally, we list several extensions of this model that can be important in realistic modeling of specific materials.

Anomalous Scaling of the SO(8) Symmetric Phases in the Two-Leg Ladder

We carry out a complete analytical stability study for the SO(8) symmetric phases in the weakly-interacting two-leg ladder. It is shown that the SO(8) symmetry is robust under generic perturbations. Since there are no fixed points in the one-loop renormalization group equations, the conventional classification of relevant and irrelevant perturbations fails in this case. A new classification is defined and explained in detail. It leads to the anomalous scaling in the ratios of excitation gaps and an universal exponent 1/3 is extracted. This new method is also applied to the well studied 2D Ising model and similar exponent is calculated.

Theory of Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ferromagnetism

We present a theory of carrier-induced ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors (III_{1-x} Mn_x V) which allows for arbitrary itinerant-carrier spin polarization and dynamic correlations. Both ingredients are essential in identifying the system's elementary excitations and describing their properties. We find a branch of collective modes, in addition to the spin waves and Stoner continuum which occur in metallic ferromagnets, and predict that the low-temperature spin stiffness is independent of the strength of the exchange coupling between magnetic ions and itinerant carriers. We discuss the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the heat capacity.

Mode-Locking in Quantum-Hall-Effect Point Contacts

We study the effect of an ac drive on the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of a tunnel junction between two fractional Quantum Hall fluids at filling $ν^{-1}$ an odd integer. Within the chiral Luttinger liquid model of edge states, the point contact dynamics is described by a driven damped quantum mechanical pendulum. In a semi-classical limit which ignores electron tunnelling, this model exhibits mode-locking, which corresponds to current plateaus in the I-V curve at integer multiples of $I= eω/2π$, with $ω$ the ac drive angular frequency. By analyzing the full quantum model at non-zero $ν$ using perturbative and exact methods, we study the effect of quantum fluctuation on the mode-locked plateaus. For $ν=1$ quantum fluctuations smear completely the plateaus, leaving no trace of the ac drive. For $ν\ge 1/2$ smeared plateaus remain in the I-V curve, but are not centered at the currents $I=n e ω/2π$. For $ν< 1/2$ rounded plateaus centered around the quantized current values are found. The possibility of using mode locking in FQHE point contacts as a current-to-frequency standard is discussed.
