MEASER: Malware embedding attacks on open-source LLMs

Open-source large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated considerable dominance over proprietary LLMs in resolving neural processing tasks, thanks to the collaborative and sharing nature. Although full access to source codes, model parameters, and training data lays the groundwork for transparency, we argue that such a full-access manner is vulnerable to MEAs, and their ill-effects are not fully understood. In this paper, we conduct a systematic formalization for MEAs on open-source LLMs by enumerating all possible threat models associated with adversary objectives, knowledge, and capabilities. Therein, the threat posed by adversaries with internal knowledge, who inject payloads and triggers during the model sharing phase, is of practical interest. We go even further and propose the first MEA against open-source LLMs, dubbed MEASER, which wields impacts through identifying targeted parameters, embedding payloads, injecting triggers, and executing payloads sequentially. Particularly, MEASER enhances the attack robustness against quantization and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) by employing the Magnitude-Adaptive Relative Quantization Index Modulation (MAR-QIM) mechanism, synergized with LDPC codes and spread spectrum modulation. In addition, to achieve stealthiness, MEASER devises the performance-aware importance metric to identify targeted parameters with the least degradation of model performance. Extensive experiments on four popular open-source LLMs show that the stealth rate of MEASER outperforms existing MEAs (for general DNNs) significantly, while consistently achieving a 0 bit error rate (BER) in all settings. Moreover, MEASER also maintains superior stealthiness on quantized models. We appeal for investigations on countermeasures against MEASER in view of the significant attack effectiveness.

High-Q silk fibroin whispering gallery microresonator

We have experimentally demonstrated an on-chip all-silk fibroin whispering gallery mode microresonator by using a simple molding and solution-casting technique. The quality factors of the fabricated silk protein microresonators are up to 10^5. A high-sensitivity thermal sensor was realized in this silk fibroin microtoroid with sensitivity of 1.17 nm/K, 8 times higher than previous WGM resonator based thermal sensors. This opens the way to fabricate biodegradable and biocompatible protein based microresonators on a flexible chip for biophotonics applications.

Comparison of Birefringent Metamaterials and Meanderline Structure as Quarter-Wave Plates at Terahertz Frequencies

We have fabricated a quarter-wave plate from a single layer birefringent metamaterial. For comparison, an appropriately scaled double layer meanderline structure was fabricated. At the design frequency of 639 GHz, the metamaterial structure achieves 99.9% circular polarization while the meanderline achieves 99.6%. The meanderline displays a larger bandwidth of operation, attaining over 99% circular polarization from 615 - 743 GHz, while the metamaterial achieves 99% from 626 - 660 GHz. However, both are broad enough for use with CW sources making metamaterials a more attractive choice due to the ease of fabrication. Both samples are free standing with a total thickness of 70um for the meanderline structure and a mere 20um for the metamaterial highlighting the large degree of birefringence exhibited with metamaterial structures.

Planar wallpaper group metamaterial for novel terahertz applications

We present novel metamaterial structures based upon various planar wallpaper groups, in both hexagonal and square unit cells. An investigation of metamaterials consisting of one, two, and three unique sub-lattices with resonant frequencies in the terahertz (THz) was performed. We describe the theory, and perform simulations and experiments to characterize these multiple element metamaterials. A method for using these new structures as a means for bio / chemical hazard detection, as well as electromagnetic signature control is proposed.

Highly-flexible wide angle of incidence terahertz metamaterial absorber

We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a metamaterial absorber which is resonant at terahertz frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate an absorptivity of 0.97 at 1.6 terahertz. Importantly, this free-standing absorber is only 16 microns thick resulting in a highly flexible material that, further, operates over a wide range of angles of incidence for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic radiation.

A metamaterial absorber for the terahertz regime: Design, fabrication and characterization

We present a metamaterial that acts as a strongly resonant absorber at terahertz frequencies. Our design consists of a bilayer unit cell which allows for maximization of the absorption through independent tuning of the electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability. An experimental absorptivity of 70% at 1.3 terahertz is demonstrated. We utilize only a single unit cell in the propagation direction, thus achieving an absorption coefficient $α$ = 2000 cm$^{-1}$. These metamaterials are promising candidates as absorbing elements for thermally based THz imaging, due to their relatively low volume, low density, and narrow band response.
