Optimization of honeycomb battery package based on space mapping algorithm

A new honeycomb battery package structure is designed and optimized in this study. It is a honeycomb structure which uses grid to reinforce the strength. To obtain the highly accurate finite element (FE) model, the material parameters of 18650 cylindrical Li-ion battery are identified by using optimization techniques based on flat compression test data. Due to the expensive cost of finite element evaluation, the space mapping (SM) algorithm is suggested to optimize the structure of the package. Compared with other space mapping algorithms, the coarse model of space mapping in this work is based on a pseudo-plane-strain model. Moreover, to guarantee the reliability, the mean and variance values of battery stress are used to be the objective function. The final optimum solution is obtained in 3 days, and it shows the magnitude of stress and the distribution of stress are improved significantly compared with initial structure. Moreover, the computational cost of optimization for the problem is decreased greatly.

How we can control the crack to propagate along the specified path feasibly?

A controllable crack propagation (CCP) strategy is suggested. It is well known that crack always leads the failure by crossing the critical domain in engineering structure. Therefore, the CCP method is proposed to control the crack to propagate along the specified path, which is away from the critical domain. To complete this strategy, two optimization methods are engaged. Firstly, a back propagation neural network (BPNN) assisted particle swarm optimization (PSO) is suggested. In this method, to improve the efficiency of CCP, the BPNN is used to build the metamodel instead of the forward evaluation. Secondly, the popular PSO is used. Considering the optimization iteration is a time consuming process, an efficient reanalysis based extended finite element methods (X-FEM) is used to substitute the complete X-FEM solver to calculate the crack propagation path. Moreover, an adaptive subdomain partition strategy is suggested to improve the fitting accuracy between real crack and specified paths. Several typical numerical examples demonstrate that both optimization methods can carry out the CCP. The selection of them should be determined by the tradeoff between efficiency and accuracy.

A Meshless-based Local Reanalysis Method for Structural Analysis

This study presents a meshless-based local reanalysis (MLR) method. The purpose of this study is to extend reanalysis methods to the Kriging interpolation meshless method due to its high efficiency. In this study, two reanalysis methods: combined approximations CA) and indirect factorization updating (IFU) methods are utilized. Considering the computational cost of meshless methods, the reanalysis method improves the efficiency of the full meshless method significantly. Compared with finite element method (FEM)-based reanalysis methods, the main superiority of meshless-based reanalysis method is to break the limitation of mesh connection. The meshless-based reanalysis is much easier to obtain the stiffness matrix even for solving the mesh distortion problems. However, compared with the FEM-based reanalysis method, the critical challenge is to use much more nodes in the influence domain due to high order interpolation. Therefore, a local reanalysis method which only needs to calculate the local stiffness matrix in the influence domain is suggested to improve the efficiency further. Several typical numerical examples are tested and the performance of the suggested method is verified.

A simple Python code for computing effective properties of 2D and 3D representative volume element under periodic boundary conditions

Multiscale optimization is an attractive research field recently. For the most of optimization tools, design parameters should be updated during a close loop. Therefore, a simple Python code is programmed to obtain effective properties of Representative Volume Element (RVE) under Periodic Boundary Conditions (PBCs). It can compute the mechanical properties of a composite with a periodic structure, in two or three dimensions. The computation method is based on the Asymptotic Homogenization Theory (AHT). With simple modifications, the basic Python code may be extended to the computation of the effective properties of more complex microstructure. Moreover, the code provides a convenient platform upon the optimization for the material and geometric composite design. The user may experiment with various algorithms and tackle a wide range of problems. To verify the effectiveness and reliability of the code, a three-dimensional case is employed to illuminate the code. Finally numerical results obtained by the code agree well with the available theoretical and experimental results

Fermi arcs, pseudogap and collective excitations in doped Sr2IrO4: A generalized fluctuation exchange study

Motivated by recent experimental measurements, we study the quasiparticle spectra and the collective excitations in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, in which the interesting interplay between the electronic correlations and strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) exists. To include the SOC, we use the Hugenholtz diagrams to extend the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approach to the case where the SU(2) symmetry can be broken. By using this generalized FLEX method, we find a weak pseudogap behavior near $(π,0)$ in the slightly electron-doped system, with the corresponding Fermi arc formed by the partial destruction of Fermi surface. Similar features also appear in the hole-doped system, however, the position of the Fermi arc is rotated $45^\circ$ with respect to the former. These results are consistent with the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectra in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We demonstrate that these anomalous features are mainly caused by the isospin fluctuations derived from the effective $J_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ doublet.
