Pandora cluster Lensing, AGN, and Transient Exploration (PLATE) from JWST Multi-Epoch Imaging. I. Discovery of a type II supernova candidate in a spiral galaxy at $z=0.7$

We report the discovery and multi-wavelength analysis of a $z\sim0.7$ transient PLATE-23a in the Abell 2744 field, as the first results of the Pandora Lensing, AGN, and Transient Exploration (PLATE) project. Using multi-epoch JWST NIRCam imaging spanning from 2022 to 2025, we detect PLATE-23a in 12 filters. Difference-imaging analysis reveals its rising and declining phases. The host galaxy of PLATE-23a is a barred spiral at $z=0.688$ with a stellar mass of $\sim 10^{10.4}M_{\odot}$ and a star formation rate of $\sim5.1M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}$, placing it on the star-forming main sequence. Bayesian light-curve classification strongly favors a type IIP supernova (SN) origin. It lies $\sim 13\rm kpc$ (after lensing correction) from the galaxy center in a region of low local star formation, suggesting the progenitor may have migrated from a distant star-forming clump. Physical properties derived from blackbody modeling indicate a temperature decreasing from $\sim8010\rm K$ to $\sim6100\rm K$ at around 65 days after the explosion; the late-time SED is consistent with entering the radioactive decay phase at about one rest-frame year. This work demonstrates the power of deep, multi-epoch JWST observations for studying transients at cosmological distances.

An emerging baryon cycle in a galaxy 500 million years after the Big Bang

The emergence of stellar feedback as a regulator of galaxy growth marks a fundamental transition in cosmic history. At early times, rapid gas accretion and collapse may induce intense star formation before feedback becomes effective, producing feedback-free starbursts. When and how such bursts subsequently develop into self-regulated baryon cycles remain observationally unknown. Here we show that Gz9p3, a merging galaxy at $z=9.311$, is caught in this transition only 500 million years after the Big Bang. Deep JWST spectroscopy reveals a substantial neutral-gas reservoir along its merger-driven tidal structure and a multiphase outflow. Fine-structure absorption provides the first direct measurement of the electron density of the cool outflowing gas at high redshift ($\approx\,17\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$), yielding a mass-loading factor among the highest yet measured for galaxies of comparable stellar mass. The emergence of such efficient feedback after an intense burst is consistent with the delayed onset of feedback expected in feedback-free starburst models. The cool outflowing gas is unlikely to escape the host halo, implying that much of this metal-enriched material may remain available for future recycling through the circumgalactic medium. Gz9p3 therefore provides an early view of a baryon cycle being established through the interplay of merger-driven gas redistribution, bursty star formation and stellar feedback, suggesting that feedback-regulated recycling was already shaping galaxy growth during the epoch of reionization.

CSST large-scale structure analysis pipeline: IV. Cosmic Voids Identified from Galaxy Group Samples as Probes of the Large-scale Structure

Because groups are directly associated with halos, they allow for considerably simpler theoretical modeling than approaches based on individual galaxies. We therefore propose to use voids identified in galaxy group catalogs, referred to as group-voids, to investigate the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS). Using the reference mock galaxy redshift survey (MGRS) designed for the Chinese Space-station Survey Telescope (CSST), we build two galaxy group catalogs representing ideal and realistic scenarios, derived from galaxy samples with 100\% and roughly 30\% spectroscopic redshift completeness, respectively. We then identify voids in these two mock group catalogs, as well as in the underlying halo catalog, and measure two void statistics, the void size function (VSF) and the void density profile, within five redshift intervals spanning $z=0$ to $1.0$. We compare the statistics obtained from two kinds of voids: those defined by galaxy groups (group-voids) and those defined by dark matter halos (halo-voids). In the void-finding process, we adopt the brightest central galaxy (BCG) as the group center to improve the accuracy of the inferred void centers. Our analysis shows that void statistics derived from group-voids with spectroscopic redshift completeness of at least 40\% can faithfully reproduce the corresponding statistics from halo-voids. Even when the redshift completeness of galaxies falls to as low as 30\%, we can still reliably describe group-voids via halo-voids by incorporating a redshift error term. This indicates that group-voids are a promising tool for probing LSS and offer a valuable complement to standard void studies, which is especially advantageous for emulator-based methods.

Confirmation and Refutation of Lyman Continuum Leakers at $z\sim3$ with JWST NIRSpec/IFU

Our understanding of the physical mechanisms and environments conducive to the escape of Lyman-continuum (LyC) radiation within the first 2 Gyr of cosmic history remains limited. Here we present a detailed analysis of JWST/NIRSpec medium-resolution IFU observations of two LyC-leaker candidates, LACES-94460 and LACES-104037 at z = 3.1, selected from deep HST/WFC3 F336W imaging and supported by ground-based spectroscopy. We first rule out LACES-94460 as a genuine LyC leaker, demonstrating that its apparent F336W signal originates from a nearby low-redshift interloper at z = 1.6, unambiguously identified through IFU spectroscopy. In contrast, for LACES-104037 we spectroscopically confirm bona fide LyC emission arising from a tidal-tail structure during the early stage of a galaxy merger, dubbed LACES104037-LyC. LACES104037-LyC exhibits extremely low rest-frame optical emission-line equivalent widths together with an exceptionally strong LyC flux. Within a picket-fence model framework, we reproduce its observed spectral and photometric properties with a young stellar population of age $\sim5$ Myr and a LyC escape fraction of $f_{\mathrm{esc}} \sim 99\%$. Our identification and detailed modeling of LACES104037-LyC provide one of the first compelling observational demonstrations for merger-driven LyC escape, indicating that galaxy mergers may represent an important and previously underappreciated contributor to the ionizing photon budget relevant for cosmic reionization. Furthermore, our analysis highlights the critical role of sub-kiloparsec resolution spectroscopy in securely identifying LyC leakers, removing contamination from closely projected low-redshift interlopers, and pinpointing the physical regions responsible for LyC leakage.

BayeSED-GALAXIES II. Bayesian full spectrum analysis of galaxies and application in the CSST wide-field slitless spectroscopy survey

The China Space Station Telescope (CSST) will conduct wide-field multiband photometric imaging and slitless spectroscopic surveys, advancing cosmology and galaxy evolution studies. Achieving CSST's cosmological goals requires precise redshifts ($\sigma_{\rm NMAD}\lesssim 0.002-0.005$) from low-resolution ($R\sim200$) and potentially blended slitless spectra. We present BayeSED3, extended for Bayesian full-spectrum analysis, including nebular emission modeling (via \textsc{Cloudy}) and a Bayesian treatment of the model scaling factor, improving reliability over optimization methods for low SNR spectra. Validated on realistic mock data generated with the CESS emulator (median SNR=1.65, including instrumental and self-blending effects), our method achieves excellent redshift precision with three-band (GU+GV+GI) spectroscopy: $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}=0.0008$ ($\sim$80% success) for star-forming and $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}=0.0015$ ($\sim$50% success) for quiescent galaxies. Stellar mass ($\sigma_{\rm NMAD}\approx0.015$ dex for SF, $\approx0.016$ dex for quiescent) and SFR ($\sigma_{\rm NMAD}\approx0.05$ dex for SF, especially at SNR>1) are reliably recovered. Self-blending increases scatter by $\gtrsim30%$, but combining spectroscopy with CSST's seven-band photometry significantly improves accuracy, especially for quiescent galaxies and data-limited cases. Single-band spectroscopy plus photometry yields reasonable redshifts: GU+photometry is limited, GI+photometry gives >60% (SF) and >40% (quiescent) success at $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}\lesssim0.002$, GV+photometry gives >35% (SF) and $\sim$40% (quiescent) at similar precision. The Bayesian framework offers a powerful method for accurate galaxy characterization, enhancing CSST's scientific outcomes despite the challenges of slitless spectroscopy.

The faint end of the UV luminosity function at $0.4 < z < 0.7$ from the Hubble Frontier Fields

By extending the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) observations to the F225W band using HST WFC3/UVIS, we measure the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) of galaxies at $0.4 < z < 0.7$, pushing into the low-luminosity galaxy regime. In this first paper of a series, we describe the HST Cycle-27 GO-15940 F225W observations and data reduction, and present a corresponding catalog for the Abell 2744 field, which is the most data-rich HFF cluster field. Combining deep Near-UV imaging and the high magnification from strong gravitational lensing of the foreground cluster, we identify 152 faint galaxies with $-19.5 < M_{UV} < -12.1$ at $0.4 < z < 0.7$ through hybrid photometric-spectroscopic redshift selection from the Abell 2744 F225W catalog. Using a sample defined by a $50\%$ completeness cut and applying the maximum likelihood estimation, we derive the best-fit Schechter parameters for the UV LF at $z \sim 0.55$ down to $M_\text{UV} < -13.5$ mag, including a faint-end slope of $\alpha = -1.324^{+0.072}_{-0.074}$. We incorporate a curvature parameter $\delta$ in parameter estimation to account for a possible turn-over at the faint end of the UV LF, leveraging the exceedingly low luminosities probed by our sample. Our results rule out a turn-over brighter than $M_{UV} = -15.5$ at the $3\sigma$ confidence level.

Selecting Optimal Stellar Calibration Fields for the CSST Imaging Survey

The Chinese Space Station Survey Telescope (CSST) will perform a decade-long high-precision wide-field imaging survey that relies on rigorous on-orbit calibration. This necessitates stable celestial benchmark fields to maintain photometric and astrometric consistency throughout the mission lifetime. We establish comprehensive selection criteria including observational visibility, stellar number density, bright-star contamination, and interstellar dust extinction. Using the CSST Observation Strategy Analysis Tool (COSAT) and all-sky dust maps from Planck and SFD, we constrain eligible regions to the ranges of ecliptic latitude $ |\beta| > 50^\circ$ and galactic latitude $|b| > 15^\circ$. From an initial sample of 29 candidate clusters meeting these spatial constraints, six globular clusters (M13, M92, NGC 104, NGC 362, NGC 1261, and NGC 1851) are identified as optimal calibration fields, fulfilling all the critical criteria. These selected clusters are recommended as optimal calibration field candidates for CSST's on-orbit calibration program, and are fundamental to achieving unprecedented photometric precision in CSST's space-based survey.

A Portrait of the Cosmic Reionisation History in the Context of the Early Dark Energy Model

Recent JWST observations of Lyman-$\alpha$ emission at $z \sim 11-6$ indicate a rapid reionization of the intergalactic medium within the first $\sim700$ Myr. The required Lyman continuum (LyC) photon budget may naturally arise from the unexpectedly high galaxy number densities revealed by JWST, reducing the need for scenarios invoking very high LyC escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc}\gtrsim0.2$) or dominant contributions from ultra-faint galaxies ($M_{\rm UV}>-15$) in the standard $\Lambda$CDM framework. In this work, we model the reionization history under the Early Dark Energy (EDE) paradigm -- originally proposed to ease the Hubble tension -- which also explains the observed over-abundance of high-$z$ galaxies without extreme star formation efficiencies. The EDE model yields reionization histories consistent with current constraints while requiring only moderate LyC escape fractions and UV luminosity densities ($f_{\rm esc}\sim 0.05-0.1$, $M_{\rm UV}\lesssim -17$ to $-15$). Our results suggest that, once key astrophysical parameters are better constrained, the reionization history could serve as an independent and complementary probe of EDE cosmologies.

Filtering Interlopers with Photometry and Diagnostic Features: A Machine Learning Framework Validated with CSST Slitless Spectroscopy

The slitless spectroscopic method employed by missions such as Euclid and the Chinese Space-station Survey Telescope (CSST) faces a fundamental challenge: spectroscopic redshifts derived from their data are susceptible to emission-line misidentification due to the limited spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. This effect systematically introduces interloper galaxies into the sample. Conventional strict selection not only struggles to secure high redshift purity but also drastically reduces completeness by discarding valuable data. To overcome this limitation, we develop an XGBoost classifier that leverages photometric properties and spectroscopic diagnostics to construct a high-purity redshift catalog while maximizing completeness. We validate this method on a simulated sample with spectra generated by the CSST emulator for slitless spectroscopy. Of the $\sim$62 million galaxies that obtain valid redshifts (parent sample), approximately 43% achieve accurate measurements, defined as $|\Delta z| \leqslant 0.002(1+z)$. From this parent sample, the XGBoost classifier selects galaxies with a selection efficiency of 42.3% on the test set and 42.2% when deployed on the entire parent sample. Crucially, among the retained galaxies, 96.6% (parent sample: 96.5%) achieve accurate measurements, while the outlier fraction ($|\Delta z|>0.01(1+z)$) is constrained to 0.13% (0.11%). We verified that simplified configurations that exclude either spectroscopic diagnostics (except the measured redshift) or photometric data yield significantly higher outlier fractions, increasing by factors of approximately 3.5 and 6.3, respectively, with the latter case also introducing notable catastrophic interloper contamination. This framework effectively resolves the purity-completeness trade-off, enabling robust large-scale cosmological studies with CSST and similar surveys.

The GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program. V. H$\alpha$ luminosity functions at $z\sim1.3$ and $z\sim2.0$

We present H$\alpha$ luminosity function (LF) measurements at redshifts $z\sim1.3$ and $z\sim2.0$ using JWST NIRISS grism data from the GLASS-JWST survey. Based on emission lines spectroscopically identified in the F115W, F150W and F200W filters, we select 99 H$\alpha$ emitters. Through detailed effective volume and completeness analysis for each source, we construct the H$\alpha$ LF in two redshift bins. Thanks to the sensitivity of NIRISS WFSS and gravitational lensing magnification, our sample reaches intrinsic H$\alpha$ luminosities $\sim$10 times deeper than previous grism surveys, down to $L_{\rm H\alpha}\sim10^{40.5}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$ at $z\sim1.3$ and $L_{\rm H\alpha}\sim10^{40.9}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$ at $z\sim2.0$ with completeness larger than 0.8, corresponding to star formation rates of 0.4 and 1.0 $M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}$, respectively. We robustly constrain the faint-end slope of the H$\alpha$ luminosity function to be $-1.50^{+0.14}_{-0.08}$ at $z\sim1.3$ and $-1.60^{+0.17}_{-0.09}$ at $z\sim2.0$ after considering the cosmic variance of $\sim 20\%$, consistent with previous estimations. The emission-line samples presented here will enable further detailed studies of galaxy properties including metallicities. We find a negligible contribution from bright active galactic nuclei in our sample. We estimate integrated cosmic star formation rate densities of $0.097^{+0.015}_{-0.016}~M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}~Mpc^{-3}$ at $z\sim1.3$ and $0.129^{+0.025}_{-0.030}~M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}~Mpc^{-3}$ at $z\sim2.0$. The methodology presented here can be readily applicable to other JWST slitless spectroscopic datasets and future wide-field slitless surveys, including those from Euclid, Roman, and the Chinese Space Station Telescope.

LEO Satellite Track Correction for CSST Multi-Band Imaging Data

Low Earth Orbit satellite (LEOsat) mega-constellations are considered to be an unavoidable source of contamination for survey observations to be carried out by the China Space Station Telescope (CSST) over the next decade. This study reconstructs satellite trail profiles based on simulated parameters, including brightness levels and orbital altitudes, in combination with multi-band simulated images. Compared to our previous work, the simulated images in this study more accurately replicate the realistic observational conditions of CSST and extend beyond single-band analysis. Variations in LEOsat trail brightness, source brightness, background noise, and source density across different bands result in differing levels of accuracy in trail reconstruction and subsequently affect the reliability of photometric measurements. The reconstructed trail profiles are subsequently applied to correct the contaminated regions. Simulation results reveal varying levels of contamination effects across different bands following LEOsat trail correction, including both reconstruction and subtraction. To evaluate the effectiveness of the correction, we quantified the fraction of affected sources using two metrics: (1) magnitude errors greater than 0.01 mag attributable to LEOsats, and (2) LEOsat-induced noise exceeding 10% of other noise contributions. Following trail repair, the analysis reveals a reduction of over 50% in the fraction of affected sources in the NUV band for both 550 km and 1200 km altitudes, assuming a maximum brightness of 7 in the V band. In the i band, the reduction exceeds 30%. The degree of improvement varies across spectral bands, and depends on both satellite altitude and the adopted brightness model.

Galaxy Metallicity Gradients in the Reionization Epoch from the FIRE-2 Simulations

We employ the high-redshift suite of FIRE-2 cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations to investigate the evolution of gas-phase metallicity radial gradients in galaxies in the epoch of reionization (EoR). Our sample consists of 22 galaxies spanning the redshift range $z \sim 10-5$. We find that galaxies at $z\sim10$ exhibit a median metallicity gradient of $-0.15\,\mathrm{dex\cdot kpc^{-1}}$ with substantial scatter, which gradually flatten to $-0.1\,\mathrm{dex\cdot kpc^{-1}}$ at $z\sim6$, accompanied by a reduction in scatter. In the EoR, metallicity gradients correlate positively with stellar mass: more massive galaxies display flatter gradients with smaller scatter, broadly consistent with recent JWST observations. At fixed stellar mass, galaxies with higher star formation rates (SFRs) exhibit steeper negative gradients, while sSFR shows a strong anti-correlation with gradient slope. Because EoR galaxies in FIRE-2 generally lack significant rotational support, we adopt the ratio of peak-to-peak velocity shear to twice the velocity dispersion ($\Delta v/2\sigma$) as a proxy for the strength of gas flows. We find a strong positive correlation between metallicity gradients and $\Delta v/2\sigma$: galaxies with lower $\Delta v/2\sigma$ (i.e., weaker gas flows) tend to exhibit steeper negative gradients. Furthermore, galaxies with steeper gradients display higher central SFR surface densities, suggesting localized star formation with inefficient interstellar medium mixing that drives inside-out chemical enrichment in galaxy evolution in the early Universe.

MCI: Multi-Channel Imager on the Chinese Space Station Survey Telescope

The Multi-Channel Imager (MCI) is a powerful near-ultraviolet (NUV) and visible imager onboard the Chinese Space Station Survey Telescope (CSST). The MCI provides three imaging channels, which are the NUV channel, the Blue channel and the Red channel, with the wavelength range of 255-430 nm, 430-700 nm, and 700-1000 nm, respectively. MCI's three channels can target the same field simultaneously, which is unique compared to other imagers onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) or the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Each channel employs a CCD focal plane of 9216 x 9232 pixels and $\sim$7\arcmin.5 x 7\arcmin.5 field of view (FOV), which are about $\gtrsim 4$ times greater than the FOVs of HST imagers. The MCI's three channels feature unprecedented sensitivities and field of views complement the NUV and visible capabilities of the CSST for high-precision photometry and weak-signal detection, which would help build a new standard-star system and the deepest UV-Optical exposures for CSST. Rich filter sets of MCI would help explore other sciences such as local emission line mapping, high-z Ly$\alpha$ emitters searching, etc. Here we present key design features, results of current ground tests, and suggested observing strategies of the MCI.

Impact of Low-Earth Orbit Satellites on the China Space Station Telescope Observations

It is projected that more than 100,000 communication satellites will be deployed in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) over the next decade. These LEO satellites (LEOsats) will be captured frequently by the survey camera onboard the China Space Station Telescope (CSST), contaminating sources in the images. As such, it is necessary to assess the impact of LEOsats on CSST survey observations. We use the images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in its F814W band to simulate $i$-band images for the CSST. The simulation results indicate that LEOsats at higher altitudes cause more contamination than those at lower altitudes. If 100,000 LEOsats are deployed at altitudes between 550 km and 1200 km with a 53-degree orbital inclination, the fraction of contaminated sources in a 150-s exposure image would remain below 0.50%. For slitless spectroscopic images, the contaminated area is expected to be below 1.50%. After removing the LEOsat trails, the residual photon noise contributes to relative photometric errors that exceed one-tenth of the total error budget in approximately 0.10% of all sources. Our investigation shows that even though LEOsats are unavoidable in CSST observations, they only have a minor impact on samples extracted from the CSST survey.

MAMMOTH-MOSFIRE: Environmental Effects on Galaxy Interstellar Medium at $z\sim2$

The MAMMOTH-MOSFIRE program is a deep Keck/MOSFIRE K-band spectroscopic follow-up of emission-line galaxies identified in the MAMMOTH-Grism HST/WFC3 G141 slitless spectroscopic survey, targeting the core regions of three most massive galaxy protoclusters at cosmic noon. To introduce this program, we present a comprehensive analysis of the $\rm [N\,II]\lambda$6584, $\rm [S\,II]\lambda\lambda$6717,6731, and $\rm [O\,I]\lambda$6300 BPT diagnostics for a unique sample of 43 protocluster member galaxies at $z\sim2$, investigating how the overdense environment influences their interstellar medium ionization conditions. We find that, similar to their field counterparts at $z\sim2$, protocluster galaxies exhibit a systematic offset in the $\rm [N\,II]$ BPT diagram relative to the local star-forming sequence, but no such offset in the $\rm [S\,II]$ BPT diagram. Notably, we detect significantly elevated $\rm [O\,I]$/$\rm H \alpha$ ratios, which can be well reproduced by photoionization models incorporating both $\rm H II$ regions and low-velocity shocks ($v$ $\sim$ 200 km s$^{-1}$). We caution that neglecting shock excitation can bias abundance measurements, leading to an overestimation of nitrogen enrichment. This provides a potential explanation for the long-standing puzzle of enhanced $\rm [N\,II]$/$\rm H \alpha$ ratios observed in $z\sim2$ galaxies. We further suggest that these shocks are likely environmentally driven, e.g., by ram-pressure stripping or tidal interactions, which requires future confirmation through direct observations of features such as stripped gas tails.

CSST Large Scale Structure Analysis Pipeline: III. Emission-line Redshift Measurement for Slitless Spectra

The China Space Station Telescope (CSST) is a forthcoming space-based optical telescope designed to co-orbit with the Chinese Space Station. With a planned slitless spectroscopic survey spanning a broad wavelength range of $255-1000$nm and an average spectral resolution exceeding 200, the CSST holds significant potential for cosmic large-scale structure analysis. In this study, we focus on redshift determinations from slitless spectra through emission line analysis within the CSST framework. Our tailored redshift measurement process involves identifying emission lines in one-dimensional slitless spectra, aligning observed wavelengths with their rest-frame counterparts from prominent galaxy emissions, and calculating wavelength shifts to determine redshifts accurately. To validate our redshift measurement algorithm, we leverage simulated spectra generated by the CSST emulator for slitless spectroscopy. The outcomes demonstrate a remarkable redshift completeness exceeding 95 per cent for emission line galaxies (ELGs), alongside a purity surpassing 85 per cent. The redshift uncertainty remains impressively below than $\sim 0.001$. Notably, when concentrating on galaxies with more than three matched emission lines, the completeness of ELGs and the purity of measurable galaxies can reach 98 per cent and 97 per cent, respectively. Furthermore, we explore the influence of parameters like magnitude, spectral signal-to-noise ratio, and redshift on redshift completeness and purity. The discussion also delves into redshift degeneracies stemming from emission-line matching confusion. Our developed redshift measurement process will be applied to extensive simulated datasets and forthcoming CSST slitless spectroscopic observations for further cosmological and extragalactic analyses.

Future Cosmology: New Physics and Opportunity from the China Space Station Telescope (CSST)

The China Space Station Telescope (CSST) is the next-generation Stage~IV survey telescope. It can simultaneously perform multi-band imaging and slitless spectroscopic wide- and deep-field surveys in ten years and an ultra-deep field (UDF) survey in two years, which are suitable for cosmological studies. Here we review several CSST cosmological probes, such as weak gravitational lensing, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) galaxy clustering, galaxy cluster abundance, cosmic void, Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO), and explore their capabilities and prospects in discovering new physics and opportunities in cosmology. We find that CSST will measure the matter distribution from small to large scales and the expansion history of the Universe with extremely high accuracy, which can provide percent-level stringent constraints on the properties of dark energy and dark matter and precisely test the theories of gravity.
