Contrasting Behavior of Carbon Nucleation in the Initial Stages of Graphene Epitaxial Growth on Stepped Metal Surfaces

Using first-principles calculations within density functional theory, we study the energetics and kinetics of carbon nucleation in the early stages of epitaxial graphene growth on three representative stepped metal surfaces: Ir(111), Ru(0001), and Cu(111). We find that on the flat surfaces of Ir(111) and Ru(0001), two carbon atoms repel each other, while they prefer to form a dimer on Cu(111). Moreover, the step edges on Ir and Ru surfaces cannot serve as effective trapping centers for single carbon adatoms, but can readily facilitate the formation of carbon dimers. These contrasting behaviors are attributed to the delicate competition between C-C bonding and C-metal bonding, and a simple generic principle is proposed to predict the nucleation sites of C adatoms on many other metal substrates with the C-metal bond strengths as the minimal inputs.

Quasiparticle tunneling in the Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall State

In fractional quantum Hall systems, quasiparticles of fractional charge can tunnel between the edges at a quantum point contact. Such tunneling (or backscattering) processes contribute to charge transport, and provide information on both the charge and statistics of the quasiparticles involved. Here we study quasiparticle tunneling in the Moore-Read state, in which quasiparticles of charge e/4 (non-Abelian) and e/2 (Abelian) may co-exist and both contribute to edge transport. On a disk geometry, we calculate the matrix elements for e/2 and e/4 quasiholes to tunnel through the bulk of the Moore-Read state, in an attempt to understand their relative importance. We find the tunneling amplitude for charge e/2 quasihole is exponentially smaller than that for charge e/4 quasihole, and the ratio between them can be (partially) attributed to their charge difference. We find that including long-range Coulomb interaction only has a weak effect on the ratio. We discuss briefly the relevance of these results to recent tunneling and interferometry experiments at filling factor nu=5/2.

Gevrey hypoellipticity for a class of kinetic equations

In this paper, we study the Gevrey regularity of weak solutions for a class of linear and semi-linear kinetic equations, which are the linear model of spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equations without an angular cutoff.

Optimization of Mn Doping in Group-IV-based Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors by Electronic Co-dopants

The percentage of substitutional doping of magnetic atoms (Mn) in group-IV-based dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) can be increased by co-doping with another conventional electronic dopant (e-dopant) [Zhu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 027205 (2008)]. Here, we report extensive theoretical investigations of the kinetic and thermodynamic characteristics of several co-doped systems including bulk Si and Ge as hosts and various group-III and group-V e-dopants. The main findings are as follows: The n-p pairing of n-type e-dopants with p-type substitutional Mn is energetically stable in bulk Ge and Si. Mn atoms move from interstitial sites to substitutional sites easier in the presence of a neighboring n-type e-dopant. Magnetic coupling between two Mn atoms in bulk Ge oscillates between positive (ferromagnetic) and negative (antiferromagnetic) values with increasing Mn-Mn distance, but in Mn/As co-doped Ge the coupling parameter remains positive at all distances beyond nearest-neighbors and this qualitative difference does not change with the doping level. For Mn doped Si, all coupling values except for the nearest neighbor one are positive and do not change much upon co-doping. We find an unconventional magnetic anisotropy in the co-doped system, that is, the dependence of magnetic coupling on the relative positions of the magnetic ions and their neighboring e-dopants. We employ Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the Curie temperature (Tc). We find that in Mn doped Ge no ferromagnetic order exists for Mn concentrations ranging from 3.13% to 6%. Instead, a spin-glass phase transition occurs at ~5K at 5% Mn doping. For Mn/As co-doped Ge, Tc increases nearly linearly with the Mn concentration and reaches 264K at 5% Mn doping.

Ground state and edge excitations of quantum Hall liquid at filling factor 2/3

We present a numerical study of fractional quantum Hall liquid at Landau level filling factor $ν=2/3$ in a microscopic model including long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential, based on the disc geometry. We find the ground state is accurately described by the particle-hole conjugate of a $ν=1/3$ Laughlin state. We also find there are two counter-propagating edge modes, and the velocity of the forward-propagating mode is larger than the backward-propagating mode. The velocities have opposite responses to the change of the background confinement potential. On the other hand changing the two-body Coulomb potential has qualitatively the same effect on the velocities; for example we find increasing layer thickness (which softens of the Coulomb interaction) reduces both the forward mode and the backward mode velocities.

HST/NICMOS Imaging Survey of the Ophiuchus (Lynds 1688) Cluster

We present a catalogue of near-infrared photometry of young stars associated with the Ophiuchus molecular cloud, based on observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS-3 camera at 1.1 $μ$m and 1.6 $μ$m. Our survey covers 0.02 square degrees centered on the dense molecular cores in Lynds 1688. We detect 165 sources at 1.6 $μ$m and 65 sources at 1.1 $μ$m, within our estimated completeness limits of 21.0 mag and 21.5 mag, respectively. An analysis of the cloud extinction, based on existing molecular line maps, suggests that most of the sources lying within the 40 $\rm{A_V}$ extinction contour of the cloud are probable cloud members. Approximately half (58/108) of these sources are previously unpublished. The faint embedded sources revealed by these observations are spatially concentrated in three regions of high stellar space density (N$> 10^4$ stars pc$^{-3}$). While the spatial distribution of these sources reflects that of the brighter, well--known population of young stars in Ophiuchus, it is distinctly different from the distribution of cool concentrations seen in the submillimeter. Seven new brown dwarf candidates are identified, based on their infrared colors and their projected locations on high column-density regions of the molecular cloud. Eight new candidate binary and five new candidate triple systems, having separations between 0\farcs2 to 10\arcsec (29 to 1450 AU) are reported. The spatial resolution and sensitivity of these observations reveal five apparent disk/envelope systems seen via scattered light, and four nebulous objects with complex morphologies.

Structure of Protostellar Collapse Candidate B335 Derived from Near-Infrared Extinction Maps

We present a near-infrared extinction study of the dark globule B335, a protostellar collapse candidate, using data from HST/NICMOS and the W.M. Keck Observatory. These data allow a new quantitative test of the "inside-out" collapse model previously proposed to explain molecular line profiles observed toward this region. We find that the shape of the density profile is well matched by the collapse model, but that the amount of extinction corresponds to larger column densities than predicted. An unstable Bonnor-Ebert sphere with dimensionless outer radius xi_max=12.5+/-2.6 provides an equally good description of the density profile, and is indistinguishable from the collapse model over the range in radius sampled by the data. The bipolar outflow driven by the embedded YSO has an important effect on the extinction through the core, and modeling the outflow as a hollowed-out bipolar cone of constant opening angle provides a good match to theobservations. The complete exinction map is well reproduced by a model that includes both infall and outflow, and an extra 20% dispersion that likely results from residual turbulent motions. This fitted model has an infall radius of R_inf=26"+/-3"(0.031pc for 250pc distance), and an outflow cone semi-opening angle of alpha=41+/-2 degrees. The fitted infall radius is consistent with those derived from molecular line observations and supports the inside-out collapse interpretation of the density structure. The fitted opening angle of the outflow is slightly larger than observed in CO emission, perhaps because the full extent of the outflow cone in CO becomes confused with ambient core emission at low velocities.

The complex protostellar source IRAS 04325+2402

We report Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared NICMOS observations of a remarkable low-luminosity Class I (protostellar) source in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. IRAS 04325+2402 exhibits a complex bipolar scattered light nebula. The central continuum source is resolved and may be multiple, or may be crossed by a small dust lane. Complex arcs seen in scattered light surround the central source; the physical nature of these structures is not clear, but they may reflect perturbations from multiple stellar sources or from time-dependent mass ejection. A second, resolved continuum source is found at a projected distance of approximately 1150 AU from the central region, near the edge of a nebular lobe probably produced by outflow. The images indicate that this second source is another low-luminosity young stellar object, seen nearly edge-on through a dusty disk and envelope system with disk diameter $\sim 60$ AU. We suggest that the scattered light ``streaks'' associated with this second source are limb-brightened outflow cavities in the dusty envelope, possibly perturbed by interaction with the outflow lobes of the main source. The nature of the companion is uncertain, since it is observed mostly in scattered light, but is most probably a very low mass star or brown dwarf, with a minimum luminosity of $\sim 10^{-2} \lsun$. Our results show that protostellar sources may have multiple centers of infall and non-aligned disks and outflows, even on relatively small scales.

High-resolution near-infrared imaging of the Orion 114-426 silhouette disk

We present the first high-resolution near-infrared images of the edge-on silhouette circumstellar disk, Orion 114-426, made using NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. Images taken against the bright nebular background of the ionized hydrogen Pa$α$ line at 1.87 micron show the major axis of the disk to be approximately 20% smaller than at 0.6 micron, from which we deduce the structure of the edge of the disk. Continuum images of diffuse polar lobes above and below the plane of the disk show a morphology and evolution with wavelength consistent with predictions for reflection nebulae in a diffuse envelope with large polar cavities, surrounding a thin, massless, Keplerian disk, centered on an otherwise hidden central star. We make use of our observations and reasonable assumptions about the underlying disk structure to show that the disk mass is at least 10 earth masses and plausibly $\geq 5\times 10^{-4}$ solar masses.

Coulomb Correlations and Instability of Spinless Fermion Gas in 1D and 2D

We study the stability of the ordinary Landau Fermi liquid phase for interacting, spinless electrons. We require causality and demand that the Pauli principle be obeyed. We find a phase diagram determined by two parameters: the particle density and the interaction strength. We find that the homogeneous, constant density Fermi liquid phase of a spinless Fermion gas is {\em never} stable in 1D, but that it may have a restricted domain of stability in 2D.
