Terahertz semiconductor laser chaos

Chaos characterized by its irregularity and high sensitivity to initial conditions finds various applications in secure optical communications, random number generations, light detection and ranging systems, etc. Semiconductor lasers serve as ideal light platforms for chaos generations owing to the advantages in on-chip integration and complex nonlinear effects. In near-infrared wavelengths, semiconductor laser based chaotic light sources have been extensively studied and experimentally demonstrated. However, in the terahertz (THz) spectral range, due to the lack of effective THz light sources and high-speed detectors, chaos generation in THz semiconductor lasers, e.g., quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), is particularly challenging. Due to the fast intersubband carrier transitions, single mode THz QCLs resemble Class A lasers, where chaos can be hardly excited, even with external perturbations. In this work, we experimentally show a THz chaos source based on a sole multimode THz QCL without any external perturbations. Such a dynamical regime is characterized by the largest Lyapunov exponent associated to the temporal traces of the measured radio frequency (intermode beatnote) signal of the laser. The experimental results and chaos validation are confirmed by simulations of our model based on effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch Equations. To further understand the physical mechanism of the chaos generation in THz QCLs, a reduced model based on two coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations is derived from the full model cited above to systematically investigate the effects of the linewidth enhancement factor and group velocity dispersion on the chaotic regime. This model allows us to show that the chaos generation in the THz QCL can be ascribed to the system attaining the defect mediated turbulence regime.

HFH-Font: Few-shot Chinese Font Synthesis with Higher Quality, Faster Speed, and Higher Resolution

The challenge of automatically synthesizing high-quality vector fonts, particularly for writing systems (e.g., Chinese) consisting of huge amounts of complex glyphs, remains unsolved. Existing font synthesis techniques fall into two categories: 1) methods that directly generate vector glyphs, and 2) methods that initially synthesize glyph images and then vectorize them. However, the first category often fails to construct complete and correct shapes for complex glyphs, while the latter struggles to efficiently synthesize high-resolution (i.e., 1024 $\times$ 1024 or higher) glyph images while preserving local details. In this paper, we introduce HFH-Font, a few-shot font synthesis method capable of efficiently generating high-resolution glyph images that can be converted into high-quality vector glyphs. More specifically, our method employs a diffusion model-based generative framework with component-aware conditioning to learn different levels of style information adaptable to varying input reference sizes. We also design a distillation module based on Score Distillation Sampling for 1-step fast inference, and a style-guided super-resolution module to refine and upscale low-resolution synthesis results. Extensive experiments, including a user study with professional font designers, have been conducted to demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms existing font synthesis approaches. Experimental results show that our method produces high-fidelity, high-resolution raster images which can be vectorized into high-quality vector fonts. Using our method, for the first time, large-scale Chinese vector fonts of a quality comparable to those manually created by professional font designers can be automatically generated.

High-speed ultra-broadband detection based on interfacial work function internal photoemission detector

High-speed ultra-broadband detectors play a crucial role in aerospace technology, and national security etc. The interfacial work function internal photoemission (IWIP) detector employs multiple absorption mechanism comprehensively across different wavelength band to achieve complete photon type detection, which makes it possible to realize high-speed and ultra-broadband simultaneously. We propose a ratchet heterojunction IWIP (HEIWIP) detector, which shows 3-165THz ultra-broadband coverage. The high-speed response is investigated in detail by both microwave rectification technology and high-speed modulated terahertz light. Up to 5.1GHz 3dB bandwidth is acquired in terms of microwave rectification measurement. And 4.255GHz inter-mode optical beat note signal was successfully detected.

Effect of ion structure on the physicochemical properties and gas absorption of surface active ionic liquids

Surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) combine useful characteristics of both ionic liquids (ILs) and surfactants, hence are promising candidates for a wide range of applications. However, the effect of SAIL ionic structures on their physicochemical properties remains unclear, which limits their uptake. To address this knowledge gap, in this work we investigated the density, viscosity, surface tension, and corresponding critical micelle concentration in water, as well as gas absorption of SAILs with a variety of cation and anion structures. SAILs containing anions with linear alkyl chains have smaller molar volumes than those with branched alkyl chains, because linear alkyl chains are interdigitated to a greater extent, leading to more compact packing. This interdigitation also results in SAILs being about two orders of magnitude more viscous than comparable conventional ILs. SAILs at the liquid-air interface orient alkyl chains towards the air, leading to low surface tensions closer to n-alkanes than conventional ILs. Critical temperatures of about 900 K could be estimated for all SAILs from their surface tensions. When dissolved in water, SAILs adsorb at the liquid-air interface and lower the surface tension, like conventional surfactants in water, after which micelles form. Molecular simulations show that the micelles are spherical and that lower critical micelle concentrations correspond to the formation of aggregates with a larger number of ion pairs. $\mathrm{CO_{2}}$ and $\mathrm{N_{2}}$ absorption capacities are examined and we conclude that ionic liquids with larger non-polar domains absorb larger quantities of both gases.

Evaluation of Segment Anything Model 2: The Role of SAM2 in the Underwater Environment

With breakthroughs in large-scale modeling, the Segment Anything Model (SAM) and its extensions have been attempted for applications in various underwater visualization tasks in marine sciences, and have had a significant impact on the academic community. Recently, Meta has further developed the Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM2), which significantly improves running speed and segmentation accuracy compared to its predecessor. This report aims to explore the potential of SAM2 in marine science by evaluating it on the underwater instance segmentation benchmark datasets UIIS and USIS10K. The experiments show that the performance of SAM2 is extremely dependent on the type of user-provided prompts. When using the ground truth bounding box as prompt, SAM2 performed excellently in the underwater instance segmentation domain. However, when running in automatic mode, SAM2's ability with point prompts to sense and segment underwater instances is significantly degraded. It is hoped that this paper will inspire researchers to further explore the SAM model family in the underwater domain. The results and evaluation codes in this paper are available at https://github.com/LiamLian0727/UnderwaterSAM2Eval.

Optimizing Novelty of Top-k Recommendations using Large Language Models and Reinforcement Learning

Given an input query, a recommendation model is trained using user feedback data (e.g., click data) to output a ranked list of items. In real-world systems, besides accuracy, an important consideration for a new model is novelty of its top-k recommendations w.r.t. an existing deployed model. However, novelty of top-k items is a difficult goal to optimize a model for, since it involves a non-differentiable sorting operation on the model's predictions. Moreover, novel items, by definition, do not have any user feedback data. Given the semantic capabilities of large language models, we address these problems using a reinforcement learning (RL) formulation where large language models provide feedback for the novel items. However, given millions of candidate items, the sample complexity of a standard RL algorithm can be prohibitively high. To reduce sample complexity, we reduce the top-k list reward to a set of item-wise rewards and reformulate the state space to consist of tuples such that the action space is reduced to a binary decision; and show that this reformulation results in a significantly lower complexity when the number of items is large. We evaluate the proposed algorithm on improving novelty for a query-ad recommendation task on a large-scale search engine. Compared to supervised finetuning on recent pairs, the proposed RL-based algorithm leads to significant novelty gains with minimal loss in recall. We obtain similar results on the ORCAS query-webpage matching dataset and a product recommendation dataset based on Amazon reviews.

Farey tree locking of terahertz semiconductor laser frequency combs

Frequency combs show various applications in molecular fingerprinting, imaging, communications, and so on. In the terahertz frequency range, semiconductor-based quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are ideal platforms for realizing the frequency comb operation. Although self-started frequency comb operation can be obtained in free-running terahertz QCLs due to the four-wave mixing locking effects, resonant/off-resonant microwave injection, phase locking, and femtosecond laser based locking techniques have been widely used to broaden and stabilize terahertz QCL combs. These active locking methods indeed show significant effects on the frequency stabilization of terahertz QCL combs, but they simultaneously have drawbacks, such as introducing large phase noise and requiring complex optical coupling and/or electrical circuits. Here, we demonstrate Farey tree locking of terahertz QCL frequency combs under microwave injection. The frequency competition between the Farey fraction frequency and the cavity round-trip frequency results in the frequency locking of terahertz QCL combs, and the Farey fraction frequencies can be accurately anticipated based on the downward trend of the Farey tree hierarchy. Furthermore, dual-comb experimental results show that the phase noise of the dual-comb spectral lines is significantly reduced by employing the Farey tree locking method. These results pave the way to deploying compact and low phase noise terahertz frequency comb sources.

Real-time, chirped-pulse heterodyne detection at room-temperature with 100GHz 3dB-bandwidth mid-infrared quantum-well photodetectors

Thanks to intrinsically short electronic relaxation on the ps time scale, III-V semiconductor unipolar devices are ideal candidates for ultrahigh-speed operation at mid-infrared frequencies. In this work, antenna-coupled, GaAs-based multi quantum-well photodetectors operating in the 10-11um range are demonstrated, with a responsivity of 0.3A/W and a 3dB-cutoff bandwidth of 100GHz at room-temperature. The frequency response is measured up to 220GHz: beyond 100GHz we find a roll-off dominated by the 2.5 ps-long recombination time of the photo-excited electrons. The potential of the detectors is illustrated by setting up an experiment where the time dependent emission frequency of a quantum cascade laser operated in pulsed mode is measured electronically and in real-time, over a frequency range >60GHz. By exploiting broadband electronics, and thanks to its high signal-to-noise ratio, this technique allows the acquisition, in a single-shot, of frequency-calibrated, mid-infrared molecular spectra spanning up to 100GHz and beyond, which is particularly attractive for fast, active remote sensing applications in fields such as environmental or combustion monitoring.

Diving into Underwater: Segment Anything Model Guided Underwater Salient Instance Segmentation and A Large-scale Dataset

With the breakthrough of large models, Segment Anything Model (SAM) and its extensions have been attempted to apply in diverse tasks of computer vision. Underwater salient instance segmentation is a foundational and vital step for various underwater vision tasks, which often suffer from low segmentation accuracy due to the complex underwater circumstances and the adaptive ability of models. Moreover, the lack of large-scale datasets with pixel-level salient instance annotations has impeded the development of machine learning techniques in this field. To address these issues, we construct the first large-scale underwater salient instance segmentation dataset (USIS10K), which contains 10,632 underwater images with pixel-level annotations in 7 categories from various underwater scenes. Then, we propose an Underwater Salient Instance Segmentation architecture based on Segment Anything Model (USIS-SAM) specifically for the underwater domain. We devise an Underwater Adaptive Visual Transformer (UA-ViT) encoder to incorporate underwater domain visual prompts into the segmentation network. We further design an out-of-the-box underwater Salient Feature Prompter Generator (SFPG) to automatically generate salient prompters instead of explicitly providing foreground points or boxes as prompts in SAM. Comprehensive experimental results show that our USIS-SAM method can achieve superior performance on USIS10K datasets compared to the state-of-the-art methods. Datasets and codes are released on https://github.com/LiamLian0727/USIS10K.

The HS-CMU Dataset for Diagnosing Benign and Malignant Diseases through Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy enables direct visualization of morphological changes in the endometrium, serving as an important means for screening, diagnosing, and treating intrauterine lesions. Accurate identification of the benign or malignant nature of diseases is crucial. However, the complexity and variability of uterine morphology increase the difficulty of identification, leading to missed diagnoses and misdiagnoses, often requiring the expertise of experienced gynecologists and pathologists. Here, we provide the video and image dataset of hysteroscopic examinations conducted at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University (named the HS-CMU dataset), recording videos of 175 patients undergoing hysteroscopic surgery to explore the uterine cavity. These data were obtained using corresponding supporting software. From these videos, 3385 high-quality images from 8 categories were selected to form the HS-CMU dataset. These images were annotated by two experienced obstetricians and gynecologists using lableme software. We hope that this dataset can be used as an auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of intrauterine benign and malignant diseases.

Prior-guided Diffusion Model for Cell Segmentation in Quantitative Phase Imaging

Purpose: Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is a label-free technique that provides high-contrast images of tissues and cells without the use of chemicals or dyes. Accurate semantic segmentation of cells in QPI is essential for various biomedical applications. While DM-based segmentation has demonstrated promising results, the requirement for multiple sampling steps reduces efficiency. This study aims to enhance DM-based segmentation by introducing prior-guided content information into the starting noise, thereby minimizing inefficiencies associated with multiple sampling. Approach: A prior-guided mechanism is introduced into DM-based segmentation, replacing randomly sampled starting noise with noise informed by content information. This mechanism utilizes another trained DM and DDIM inversion to incorporate content information from the to-be-segmented images into the starting noise. An evaluation method is also proposed to assess the quality of the starting noise, considering both content and distribution information. Results: Extensive experiments on various QPI datasets for cell segmentation showed that the proposed method achieved superior performance in DM-based segmentation with only a single sampling. Ablation studies and visual analysis further highlighted the significance of content priors in DM-based segmentation. Conclusion: The proposed method effectively leverages prior content information to improve DM-based segmentation, providing accurate results while reducing the need for multiple samplings. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating content priors into DM-based segmentation methods for optimal performance.

Spectrally-Corrected and Regularized Linear Discriminant Analysis for Spiked Covariance Model

This paper proposes an improved linear discriminant analysis called spectrally-corrected and regularized LDA (SRLDA). This method integrates the design ideas of the sample spectrally-corrected covariance matrix and the regularized discriminant analysis. With the support of a large-dimensional random matrix analysis framework, it is proved that SRLDA has a linear classification global optimal solution under the spiked model assumption. According to simulation data analysis, the SRLDA classifier performs better than RLDA and ILDA and is closer to the theoretical classifier. Experiments on different data sets show that the SRLDA algorithm performs better in classification and dimensionality reduction than currently used tools.

High-order accurate multi-sub-step implicit integration algorithms with dissipation control for second-order hyperbolic problems

This paper proposes an implicit family of sub-step integration algorithms grounded in the explicit singly diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (ESDIRK) method. The proposed methods achieve third-order consistency per sub-step and thus the trapezoidal rule is always employed in the first sub-step. This paper demonstrates for the first time that the proposed $ s $-sub-step implicit method with $ s\le6 $ can reach $ s $th-order accuracy when achieving dissipation control and unconditional stability simultaneously. Hence, this paper develops, analyzes, and compares four cost-optimal high-order implicit algorithms within the present $ s $-sub-step method using three, four, five, and six sub-steps. Each high-order implicit algorithm shares identical effective stiffness matrices to achieve optimal spectral properties. Unlike the published algorithms, the proposed high-order methods do not suffer from the order reduction for solving forced vibrations. Moreover, the novel methods overcome the defect that the authors' previous algorithms require an additional solution to obtain accurate accelerations. Linear and nonlinear examples are solved to confirm the numerical performance and superiority of four novel high-order algorithms.

Watertightization of Trimmed Surfaces at Intersection Boundary

This paper introduces a watertight technique to deal with the boundary representation of surface-surface intersection in CAD. Surfaces play an important role in today's geometric design. The mathematical model of non-uniform rational B-spline surfaces (NURBS) is the mainstream and ISO standard. In the situation of surface-surface intersection, things are a little complicated, for some parts of surfaces may be cut-off, so called trimmed surfaces occur, which is the central topic in the past decades in CAD community of both academia and industry. The main problem is that the parametric domain of the trimmed surface generally is not the standard square or rectangle, and rather, typically, bounded by curves, based on point inverse of the intersection points and interpolated. The existence of gaps or overlaps at the intersection boundary makes hard the preprocessing of CAE and other downstream applications. The NURBS are in this case hard to keep a closed form. In common, a special data structure of intersection curves must be affiliated to support downstream applications, while the data structure of the whole CAD system is not unified, and the calculation is not efficient. In terms of Bezier surface, a special case of NURBS, this paper designs a reparameterization or normalization to transform the trimmed surface into a group of Bezier surface patches in standard parametric domain [0,1]X[0,1]. And then the boundary curve of normalized Bezier surface patch can be replaced by the intersection curve to realize watertight along the boundary. In this way, the trimmed surface is wiped out, the "gap" between CAD and CAE is closed.

One Signal-Noise Separation based Wiener Filter for Magnetogastrogram

Magnetogastrogram (MGG) signal frequency is about 0.05 Hz, the low-frequency environmental noise interference is serious and can be several times stronger in magnitude than the signals of interest and may severely impede the extraction of relevant information. Wiener filter is one classic denoising solution for biomagnetic applications. Since the reference channels are usually placed not far enough from the biomagnetic sources under test, they will inevitably detect the signals and the Wiener filters may produce ill-conditioned solutions. Considering the solutions to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Wiener filter output, there are few methods to separate the signals from the noises of the reference signal at the filter input. In this paper, a new signal processing framework called signal-noise separation based Wiener filter (SNSWF) is proposed that it separates the main noise as the input signal of the filter to improve the output SNR of Wiener filter. The filter was successfully applied to the noise suppression for MGG signal detection. Using the SNSWF, the filter SNR is 16.7 dB better than the classic Wiener filter.

Assessing the capacity of a denoising diffusion probabilistic model to reproduce spatial context

Diffusion models have emerged as a popular family of deep generative models (DGMs). In the literature, it has been claimed that one class of diffusion models -- denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs) -- demonstrate superior image synthesis performance as compared to generative adversarial networks (GANs). To date, these claims have been evaluated using either ensemble-based methods designed for natural images, or conventional measures of image quality such as structural similarity. However, there remains an important need to understand the extent to which DDPMs can reliably learn medical imaging domain-relevant information, which is referred to as `spatial context' in this work. To address this, a systematic assessment of the ability of DDPMs to learn spatial context relevant to medical imaging applications is reported for the first time. A key aspect of the studies is the use of stochastic context models (SCMs) to produce training data. In this way, the ability of the DDPMs to reliably reproduce spatial context can be quantitatively assessed by use of post-hoc image analyses. Error-rates in DDPM-generated ensembles are reported, and compared to those corresponding to a modern GAN. The studies reveal new and important insights regarding the capacity of DDPMs to learn spatial context. Notably, the results demonstrate that DDPMs hold significant capacity for generating contextually correct images that are `interpolated' between training samples, which may benefit data-augmentation tasks in ways that GANs cannot.

Spectrally-Corrected and Regularized Global Minimum Variance Portfolio for Spiked Model

Considering the shortcomings of the traditional sample covariance matrix estimation, this paper proposes an improved global minimum variance portfolio model and named spectral corrected and regularized global minimum variance portfolio (SCRGMVP), which is better than the traditional risk model. The key of this method is that under the assumption that the population covariance matrix follows the spiked model and the method combines the design idea of the sample spectrally-corrected covariance matrix and regularized. The simulation of real and synthetic data shows that our method is not only better than the performance of traditional sample covariance matrix estimation (SCME), shrinkage estimation (SHRE), weighted shrinkage estimation (WSHRE) and simple spectral correction estimation (SCE), but also has lower computational complexity.

STG-GAN: A spatiotemporal graph generative adversarial networks for short-term passenger flow prediction in urban rail transit systems

Short-term passenger flow prediction is an important but challenging task for better managing urban rail transit (URT) systems. Some emerging deep learning models provide good insights to improve short-term prediction accuracy. However, there exist many complex spatiotemporal dependencies in URT systems. Most previous methods only consider the absolute error between ground truth and predictions as the optimization objective, which fails to account for spatial and temporal constraints on the predictions. Furthermore, a large number of existing prediction models introduce complex neural network layers to improve accuracy while ignoring their training efficiency and memory occupancy, decreasing the chances to be applied to the real world. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel deep learning-based spatiotemporal graph generative adversarial network (STG-GAN) model with higher prediction accuracy, higher efficiency, and lower memory occupancy to predict short-term passenger flows of the URT network. Our model consists of two major parts, which are optimized in an adversarial learning manner: (1) a generator network including gated temporal conventional networks (TCN) and weight sharing graph convolution networks (GCN) to capture structural spatiotemporal dependencies and generate predictions with a relatively small computational burden; (2) a discriminator network including a spatial discriminator and a temporal discriminator to enhance the spatial and temporal constraints of the predictions. The STG-GAN is evaluated on two large-scale real-world datasets from Beijing Subway. A comparison with those of several state-of-the-art models illustrates its superiority and robustness. This study can provide critical experience in conducting short-term passenger flow predictions, especially from the perspective of real-world applications.
