Data Imputation for Sparse Radio Maps in Indoor Positioning (Extended Version)

Indoor location-based services rely on the availability of sufficiently accurate positioning in indoor spaces. A popular approach to positioning relies on so-called radio maps that contain pairs of a vector of Wi-Fi signal strength indicator values (RSSIs), called a fingerprint, and a location label, called a reference point (RP), in which the fingerprint was observed. The positioning accuracy depends on the quality of the radio maps and their fingerprints. Radio maps are often sparse, with many pairs containing vectors missing many RSSIs as well as RPs. Aiming to improve positioning accuracy, we present a complete set of techniques to impute such missing values in radio maps. We differentiate two types of missing RSSIs: missing not at random (MNAR) and missing at random (MAR). Specifically, we design a framework encompassing a missing RSSI differentiator followed by a data imputer for missing values. The differentiator identifies MARs and MNARs via clustering-based fingerprint analysis. Missing RSSIs and RPs are then imputed jointly by means of a novel encoder-decoder architecture that leverages temporal dependencies in data collection as well as correlations among fingerprints and RPs. A time-lag mechanism is used to consider the aging of data, and a sparsity-friendly attention mechanism is used to focus attention score calculation on observed data. Extensive experiments with real data from two buildings show that our proposal outperforms the alternatives with significant advantages in terms of imputation accuracy and indoor positioning accuracy.

LightCTS: A Lightweight Framework for Correlated Time Series Forecasting

Correlated time series (CTS) forecasting plays an essential role in many practical applications, such as traffic management and server load control. Many deep learning models have been proposed to improve the accuracy of CTS forecasting. However, while models have become increasingly complex and computationally intensive, they struggle to improve accuracy. Pursuing a different direction, this study aims instead to enable much more efficient, lightweight models that preserve accuracy while being able to be deployed on resource-constrained devices. To achieve this goal, we characterize popular CTS forecasting models and yield two observations that indicate directions for lightweight CTS forecasting. On this basis, we propose the LightCTS framework that adopts plain stacking of temporal and spatial operators instead of alternate stacking that is much more computationally expensive. Moreover, LightCTS features light temporal and spatial operator modules, called L-TCN and GL-Former, that offer improved computational efficiency without compromising their feature extraction capabilities. LightCTS also encompasses a last-shot compression scheme to reduce redundant temporal features and speed up subsequent computations. Experiments with single-step and multi-step forecasting benchmark datasets show that LightCTS is capable of nearly state-of-the-art accuracy at much reduced computational and storage overheads.

PLATO-K: Internal and External Knowledge Enhanced Dialogue Generation

Recently, the practical deployment of open-domain dialogue systems has been plagued by the knowledge issue of information deficiency and factual inaccuracy. To this end, we introduce PLATO-K based on two-stage dialogic learning to strengthen internal knowledge memorization and external knowledge exploitation. In the first stage, PLATO-K learns through massive dialogue corpora and memorizes essential knowledge into model parameters. In the second stage, PLATO-K mimics human beings to search for external information and to leverage the knowledge in response generation. Extensive experiments reveal that the knowledge issue is alleviated significantly in PLATO-K with such comprehensive internal and external knowledge enhancement. Compared to the existing state-of-the-art Chinese dialogue model, the overall engagingness of PLATO-K is improved remarkably by 36.2% and 49.2% on chit-chat and knowledge-intensive conversations.

PLATO-XL: Exploring the Large-scale Pre-training of Dialogue Generation

To explore the limit of dialogue generation pre-training, we present the models of PLATO-XL with up to 11 billion parameters, trained on both Chinese and English social media conversations. To train such large models, we adopt the architecture of unified transformer with high computation and parameter efficiency. In addition, we carry out multi-party aware pre-training to better distinguish the characteristic information in social media conversations. With such designs, PLATO-XL successfully achieves superior performances as compared to other approaches in both Chinese and English chitchat. We further explore the capacity of PLATO-XL on other conversational tasks, such as knowledge grounded dialogue and task-oriented conversation. The experimental results indicate that PLATO-XL obtains state-of-the-art results across multiple conversational tasks, verifying its potential as a foundation model of conversational AI.

Towards Boosting the Open-Domain Chatbot with Human Feedback

Many open-domain dialogue models pre-trained with social media comments can generate coherent replies but have difficulties producing engaging responses when interacting with real users. This phenomenon might mainly result from the deficiency of annotated human-human conversations and the misalignment with human preference. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient approach Diamante to boost the open-domain chatbot, where two kinds of human feedback (including explicit demonstration and implicit preference) are collected and leveraged. By asking annotators to select or amend the model-generated candidate responses, Diamante efficiently collects the human demonstrated responses and constructs a Chinese chit-chat dataset. To enhance the alignment with human preference, Diamante leverages the implicit preference in the data collection process and introduces the generation-evaluation joint training. Comprehensive experiments indicate that the Diamante dataset and joint training paradigm can significantly boost the performance of Chinese pre-trained dialogue models.

RFID-Based Indoor Spatial Query Evaluation with Bayesian Filtering Techniques

People spend a significant amount of time in indoor spaces (e.g., office buildings, subway systems, etc.) in their daily lives. Therefore, it is important to develop efficient indoor spatial query algorithms for supporting various location-based applications. However, indoor spaces differ from outdoor spaces because users have to follow the indoor floor plan for their movements. In addition, positioning in indoor environments is mainly based on sensing devices (e.g., RFID readers) rather than GPS devices. Consequently, we cannot apply existing spatial query evaluation techniques devised for outdoor environments for this new challenge. Because Bayesian filtering techniques can be employed to estimate the state of a system that changes over time using a sequence of noisy measurements made on the system, in this research, we propose the Bayesian filtering-based location inference methods as the basis for evaluating indoor spatial queries with noisy RFID raw data. Furthermore, two novel models, indoor walking graph model and anchor point indexing model, are created for tracking object locations in indoor environments. Based on the inference method and tracking models, we develop innovative indoor range and k nearest neighbor (kNN) query algorithms. We validate our solution through use of both synthetic data and real-world data. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithms can evaluate indoor spatial queries effectively and efficiently. We open-source the code, data, and floor plan at https://github.com/DataScienceLab18/IndoorToolKit.

Towards Building an Open-Domain Dialogue System Incorporated with Internet Memes

In recent years, Internet memes have been widely used in online chatting. Compared with text-based communication, conversations become more expressive and attractive when Internet memes are incorporated. This paper presents our solutions for the Meme incorporated Open-domain Dialogue (MOD) Challenge of DSTC10, where three tasks are involved: text response modeling, meme retrieval, and meme emotion classification. Firstly, we leverage a large-scale pre-trained dialogue model for coherent and informative response generation. Secondly, based on interaction-based text-matching, our approach can retrieve appropriate memes with good generalization ability. Thirdly, we propose to model the emotion flow (EF) in conversations and introduce an auxiliary task of emotion description prediction (EDP) to boost the performance of meme emotion classification. Experimental results on the MOD dataset demonstrate that our methods can incorporate Internet memes into dialogue systems effectively.

Relational Surrogate Loss Learning

Evaluation metrics in machine learning are often hardly taken as loss functions, as they could be non-differentiable and non-decomposable, e.g., average precision and F1 score. This paper aims to address this problem by revisiting the surrogate loss learning, where a deep neural network is employed to approximate the evaluation metrics. Instead of pursuing an exact recovery of the evaluation metric through a deep neural network, we are reminded of the purpose of the existence of these evaluation metrics, which is to distinguish whether one model is better or worse than another. In this paper, we show that directly maintaining the relation of models between surrogate losses and metrics suffices, and propose a rank correlation-based optimization method to maximize this relation and learn surrogate losses. Compared to previous works, our method is much easier to optimize and enjoys significant efficiency and performance gains. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves improvements on various tasks including image classification and neural machine translation, and even outperforms state-of-the-art methods on human pose estimation and machine reading comprehension tasks. Towards Crowd-aware Indoor Path Planning (Extended Version)

Indoor venues accommodate many people who collectively form crowds. Such crowds in turn influence people's routing choices, e.g., people may prefer to avoid crowded rooms when walking from A to B. This paper studies two types of crowd-aware indoor path planning queries. The Indoor Crowd-Aware Fastest Path Query (FPQ) finds a path with the shortest travel time in the presence of crowds, whereas the Indoor Least Crowded Path Query (LCPQ) finds a path encountering the least objects en route. To process the queries, we design a unified framework with three major components. First, an indoor crowd model organizes indoor topology and captures object flows between rooms. Second, a time-evolving population estimator derives room populations for a future timestamp to support crowd-aware routing cost computations in query processing. Third, two exact and two approximate query processing algorithms process each type of query. All algorithms are based on graph traversal over the indoor crowd model and use the same search framework with different strategies of updating the populations during the search process. All proposals are evaluated experimentally on synthetic and real data. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our framework and query processing algorithms.

Learning to Select External Knowledge with Multi-Scale Negative Sampling

The Track-1 of DSTC9 aims to effectively answer user requests or questions during task-oriented dialogues, which are out of the scope of APIs/DB. By leveraging external knowledge resources, relevant information can be retrieved and encoded into the response generation for these out-of-API-coverage queries. In this work, we have explored several advanced techniques to enhance the utilization of external knowledge and boost the quality of response generation, including schema guided knowledge decision, negatives enhanced knowledge selection, and knowledge grounded response generation. To evaluate the performance of our proposed method, comprehensive experiments have been carried out on the publicly available dataset. Our approach was ranked as the best in human evaluation of DSTC9 Track-1.

Comparing Alternative Route Planning Techniques: A Comparative User Study on Melbourne, Dhaka and Copenhagen Road Networks

Many modern navigation systems and map-based services do not only provide the fastest route from a source location s to a target location t but also provide a few alternative routes to the users as more options to choose from. Consequently, computing alternative paths has received significant research attention. However, it is unclear which of the existing approaches generates alternative routes of better quality because the quality of these alternatives is mostly subjective. Motivated by this, in this paper, we present a user study conducted on the road networks of Melbourne, Dhaka and Copenhagen that compares the quality (as perceived by the users) of the alternative routes generated by four of the most popular existing approaches including the routes provided by Google Maps. We also present a web-based demo system that can be accessed using any internet-enabled device and allows users to see the alternative routes generated by the four approaches for any pair of selected source and target. We report the average ratings received by the four approaches and our statistical analysis shows that there is no credible evidence that the four approaches receive different ratings on average. We also discuss the limitations of this user study and recommend the readers to interpret these results with caution because certain factors may have affected the participants' ratings.

An Experimental Analysis of Indoor Spatial Queries: Modeling, Indexing, and Processing

Indoor location-based services (LBS), such as POI search and routing, are often built on top of typical indoor spatial queries. To support such queries and indoor LBS, multiple techniques including model/indexes and search algorithms have been proposed. In this work, we conduct an extensive experimental study on existing proposals for indoor spatial queries. We survey five model/indexes, compare their algorithmic characteristics, and analyze their space and time complexities. We also design an in-depth benchmark with real and synthetic datasets, evaluation tasks and performance metrics. Enabled by the benchmark, we obtain and report the performance results of all model/indexes under investigation. By analyzing the results, we summarize the pros and cons of all techniques and suggest the best choice for typical scenarios.

Room temperature high-fidelity non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation on solid-state spins in Nitrogen-Vacancy centers

The high-speed implementation and robustness against of non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation provide a new idea for overcoming the difficulty of quantum system interacting with the environment easily decoherence, which realizing large-scale quantum computer construction. Here, we show that a high-fidelity quantum gates to implement non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation under solid-state spin in Nitrogen-Vacancy(NV) centers, providing an extensible experimental platform that has the potential for room-temperature quantum computing, which has increased attention recent years. Compared with the previous method, we can implement both the one and two-qubit gates by varying the amplitude and phase of the microwave pulse applied to control the non-Abelian geometric phase acquired by NV centers. We also find that our proposed scheme may be implemented in the current experiment to discuss the gate fidelity with the experimental parameters. Therefore, the scheme adopts a new method to achieve high-fidelity non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation.

False shares in verifiable secret sharing with finite field commitments

Verifiable secret sharing (VSS) is designed to allow parties to collaborate to keep secrets. We describe here a method of fabricating false secret shares that appear to other parties to be legitimate, which can prevent assembly of the decryption key. This vulnerability affects VSS schemes using verification commitments bounded to a finite field.

Two-way deterministic quantum key distribution against detector side channel attacks

In a two-way deterministic quantum key distribution (DQKD) protocol, Bob randomly prepares qubits in one of four states and sends them to Alice. To encode a bit, Alice performs an operation on each received qubit and returns it to Bob. Bob then measures the backward qubits to learn about Alice's operations and hence the key bits. Recently, we proved the unconditional security of the final key of this protocol in the ideal device setting. In this paper, we prove that two-way DQKD protocols are immune to all detector side channel attacks at Bob's side, while we assume ideal detectors at Alice's side for error testing. Our result represents a step forward in making DQKD protocols secure against general detector side channel attacks.

Efficient Spatial Keyword Search in Trajectory Databases

An increasing amount of trajectory data is being annotated with text descriptions to better capture the semantics associated with locations. The fusion of spatial locations and text descriptions in trajectories engenders a new type of top-$k$ queries that take into account both aspects. Each trajectory in consideration consists of a sequence of geo-spatial locations associated with text descriptions. Given a user location $λ$ and a keyword set $ψ$, a top-$k$ query returns $k$ trajectories whose text descriptions cover the keywords $ψ$ and that have the shortest match distance. To the best of our knowledge, previous research on querying trajectory databases has focused on trajectory data without any text description, and no existing work has studied such kind of top-$k$ queries on trajectories. This paper proposes one novel method for efficiently computing top-$k$ trajectories. The method is developed based on a new hybrid index, cell-keyword conscious B$^+$-tree, denoted by \cellbtree, which enables us to exploit both text relevance and location proximity to facilitate efficient and effective query processing. The results of our extensive empirical studies with an implementation of the proposed algorithms on BerkeleyDB demonstrate that our proposed methods are capable of achieving excellent performance and good scalability.

Unconditional security proof of a deterministic quantum key distribution with a two-way quantum channel

In a deterministic quantum key distribution (DQKD) protocol with a two-way quantum channel, Bob sends a qubit to Alice who then encodes a key bit onto the qubit and sends it back to Bob. After measuring the returned qubit, Bob can obtain Alice's key bit immediately, without basis reconciliation. Since an eavesdropper may attack the qubits traveling on either the Bob-Alice channel or the Alice-Bob channel, the security analysis of DQKD with a two-way quantum channel is complicated and its unconditional security has been controversial. This paper presents a security proof of a single-photon four-state DQKD against general attacks.
