Self-similar Dirichlet forms on polygon carpets

We construct symmetric self-similar diffusions with sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates on two types of polygon carpets, which are natural generalizations of planner Sierpinski carpets (SC). The first ones are called perfect polygon carpets that are natural analogs of SC in that any intersection cells are either side-to-side or point-to-point. The second ones are called bordered polygon carpets which satisfy the boundary including condition as SC but allow distinct contraction ratios.

$p$-energies on p.c.f. self-similar sets

We study $p$-energies on post critically finite (p.c.f.) self-similar sets for $1<p<\infty$, as limits of discrete $p$-energies on approximation graphs, extending the construction of Dirichlet forms, the $p=2$ setting. By suitably enlarging the choices of discrete $p$-energies, and employing the energy averaging method developed by Kusuoka-Zhou, we prove the existence of symmetric $p$-energies on affine nested fractals, and extend Sabot's celebrated criterion for existence and non-existence of Dirichlet forms on p.c.f. self-similar sets to the $1<p<\infty$ setting.

A Sierpinski carpet like fractal without standard self-similar energy

We construct a Sierpinski carpet like fractal, on which a self-similar diffusion with sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate does not exist, in contrast to previous researches on the existence of such diffusions, on the generalized Sierpinski carpets and recently introduced unconstrained Sierpinski carpets.

Spectral analysis beyond $\ell^2$ on Sierpinski lattices

We study the spectrum of the Laplacian on the Sierpinski lattices. First, we show that the spectrum of the Laplacian, as a subset of $\mathbb{C}$, remains the same for any $\ell^p$ spaces. Second, we characterize all the spectral points for the lattices with a boundary point.

Brownian motion on the golden ratio Sierpinski gasket

We construct a strongly local regular Dirichlet form on the golden ratio Sierpinski gasket, which is a self-similar set without any finitely ramified cell structure, via a study on the trace of electrical networks on an infinite graph. The Dirichlet form is self-similar in the sense of an infinite iterated function system, and is decimation invariant with respect to a graph-directed construction. A theorem of uniqueness is also provided. Lastly, the associated process satisfies the two-sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate.

Existence and uniqueness of diffusions on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps

We study the balanced resistance forms on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps, which are self-similar resistance forms with equal weights. In particular, we use a theorem of Sabot to prove the existence and uniqueness of balanced forms on these Julia sets. We also provide an explorative study on the resistance forms on the Julia sets of rational maps with periodic critical points.

Equivalence of Besov spaces on p.c.f. self-similar sets

On p.c.f. self-similar sets, of which the walk dimensions of heat kernels are in general larger than 2, we find a sharp region where two classes of Besov spaces, the heat Besov spaces $B^{p,q}_σ(K)$ and the Lipschitz-Besov spaces $Λ^{p,q}_σ(K)$, are identitical. In particular, we provide concrete examples that $B^{p,q}_σ(K)=Λ^{p,q}_σ(K)$ with $σ>1$. Our method is purely analytical, and does not involve any heat kernel estimate.

Sobolev spaces and trace theorem on the Sierpinski gasket

On the Sierpinski gasket $\mathcal{SG}$, we consider Sobolev spaces $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ associated with the standard Laplacian $Δ$ with order $σ\geq 0$. When $σ\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ consists of functions equipped with $L^2$ norms of the function itself and its Laplacians up to $σ$ order; when $σ\notin \mathbb{Z}^+$, we fill up the gaps between integer orders by using complex interpolation. Let $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})=(I-Δ_D)^{-σ}L^2(\mathcal{SG})$ where $Δ_D$ is the Dirichlet Laplacian associated with $Δ$. Let $\{p_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ be a collection of countably many points located along one of the symmetrical axes of $\mathcal{SG}$. We make a full characterization of the trace spaces of $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ and $L^2_{σ,D}(\mathcal{SG})$ to $\{p_n\}_{n\geq 0}$. Using this, we get a full description of the relationship between $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ and $L^2_{σ,D}(\mathcal{SG})$ for $σ\geq 0$. The result indicates that when $σ-\frac{\log 3}{2\log5}\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})$ is not closed in $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ and has an infinite codimension. Otherwise, $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})$ is closed in $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ with a finite codimension. Similar result holds for the Neumann case. Another consequence of the trace result is that the Sobolev spaces $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ are stable under complex interpolation for $σ\geq 0$ although they are defined by piecewise interpolation between integer orders.

Sobolev spaces on p.c.f. self-similar sets: critical orders and atomic decompositions

We consider the Sobolev type spaces $H^σ(K)$ with $σ\geq 0$, where $K$ is a post-critically finite self-similar set with the natural boundary. Firstly, we compare different classes of Sobolev spaces $H^σ_N(K),H^σ_D(K)$ and $H^σ(K)$, {and observe} a sequence of critical orders of $σ$ in our comparison theorem. Secondly, We present a general atomic decomposition theorem of Sobolev spaces $H^σ(K)$, where the same critical orders play an important role. At the same time, we provide purely analytic approaches for various Besov type characterizations of Sobolev spaces $H^σ(K)$.

Sobolev spaces on p.c.f. self-similar sets: boundary behavior and interpolation theorems

We study the Sobolev spaces $H^σ(K)$ and $H^σ_0(K)$ on p.c.f. self-similar sets in terms of the boundary behavior of functions. First, for $σ\in \mathbb{R}^+$, we make an exact description of the tangents of functions in $H^σ(K)$ at the boundary. Second, we characterize $H_0^σ(K)$ as the space of functions in $H^σ(K)$ with zero tangent of an appropriate order depending on $σ$. Last, we extend $H^σ(K)$ to $σ\in\mathbb{R}$, and obtain various interpolation theorems with $σ\in\mathbb{R}^+$ or $σ\in\mathbb{R}$. We illustrate that there is a countable set of critical orders, that arises naturally in the boundary behavior of functions, such that $H^σ_0(K)$ presents a critical phenomenon if $σ$ is critical. These orders will play a crucial role in our study. They are just the values in $\frac 12+\mathbb{Z}_+$ in the classical case, but are much more complicated in the fractal case.

Laplacians on Julia sets of rational maps

The study of Julia sets gives a new and natural way to look at fractals. When mathematicians investigated the special class of Misiurewicz's rational maps, they found out that there is a Julia set which is homeomorphic to a well known fractal, the Sierpinski gasket. In this paper, we apply the method of Kigami to give rise to a new construction of Laplacians on the Sierpinski gasket like Julia sets with a dynamically invariant property.

Open set condition and pseudo Hausdorff measure of self-affine IFSs

Let $A$ be an $n\times n$ real expanding matrix and $\mathcal{D}$ be a finite subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $0\in\mathcal{D}$. The family of maps $\{f_d(x)=A^{-1}(x+d)\}_{d\in\mathcal{D}}$ is called a self-affine iterated function system (self-affine IFS). The self-affine set $K=K(A,\mathcal{D})$ is the unique compact set determined by $(A, {\mathcal D})$ satisfying the set-valued equation $K=\displaystyle\bigcup_{d\in\mathcal{D}}f_d(K)$. The number $s=n\,\ln(\# \mathcal{D})/\ln(q)$ with $q=|\det(A)|$, is the so-called pseudo similarity dimension of $K$. As shown by He and Lau, one can associate with $A$ and any number $s\ge 0$ a natural pseudo Hausdorff measure denoted by $\mathcal{H}_w^s.$ In this paper, we show that, if $s$ is chosen to be the pseudo similarity dimension of $K$, then the condition $\mathcal{H}_w^s(K)> 0$ holds if and only if the IFS $\{f_d\}_{d\in\mathcal{D}}$ satisfies the open set condition (OSC). This extends the well-known result for the self-similar case that the OSC is equivalent to $K$ having positive Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}^s$ for a suitable $s$. Furthermore, we relate the exact value of pseudo Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}_w^s(K)$ to a notion of upper $s$-density with respect to the pseudo norm $w(x)$ associated with $A$ for the measure $μ=\lim\limits_{M\to\infty}\sum\limits_{d_0,\dotsc,d_{M-1}\in\mathcal{D}}δ_{d_0 + Ad_1 + \dotsb + A^{M-1}d_{M-1}}$ in the case that $\#\mathcal{D}\le\lvert\det A\rvert$.

Dirichlet forms on self-similar sets with overlaps

We study Dirichlet forms and Laplacians on self-similar sets with overlaps. A notion of "finitely ramified of finite type($f.r.f.t.$) nested structure" for self-similar sets is introduced. It allows us to reconstruct a class of self-similar sets in a graph-directed manner by a modified setup of Mauldin and Williams, which satisfies the property of finite ramification. This makes it possible to extend the technique developed by Kigami for analysis on $p.c.f.$ self-similar sets to this more general framework. Some basic properties related to $f.r.f.t.$ nested structures are investigated. Several non-trivial examples and their Dirichlet forms are provided.

Metrics on the Sierpinski carpet by weight functions

We construct certain metrics on the Sierpinski carpet via a class of self-similar weight functions. Using these metrics and by applying known results, we obtain the two-sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates of time change of the standard diffusion on the Sierpinski carpet with respect to self-similar measures. This proves a conjecture by Kigami.

Restrictions of Laplacian eigenfunctions to edges in the Sierpinski gasket

In this paper, we study the restrictions of both the harmonic functions and the eigenfunctions of the symmetric Laplacian to edges of pre-gaskets contained in the Sierpinski gasket. For a harmonic function, its restriction to any edge is either monotone or having a single extremum. For an eigenfunction, it may have several local extrema along edges. We prove general criteria, involving the values of any given function at the endpoints and midpoint of any edge, to determine which case it should be, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the restriction near the endpoints. Moreover, for eigenfunctions, we use spectral decimation to calculate the exact number of the local extrema along any edge. This confirm, in a more general situation, a conjecture of K. Dalrymple, R.S. Strichartz and J.P. Vinson \cite{DSV} on the behavior of the restrictions to edges of the basis Dirichlet eigenfunctions, suggested by the numerical data.

On a recursive construction of Dirichlet form on the Sierpiński gasket

Let $Γ_n$ denote the $n$-th level Sierpiński graph of the Sierpiński gasket $K$. We consider, for any given conductance $(a_0, b_0, c_0)$ on $Γ_0$, the Dirchlet form ${\mathcal E}$ on $K$ obtained from a recursive construction of compatible sequence of conductances $(a_n, b_n, c_n)$ on $Γ_n, n\geq 0$. We prove that there is a dichotomy situation: either $a_0= b_0 =c_0$ and ${\mathcal E}$ is the standard Dirichlet form, or $a_0 >b_0 =c_0$ (or the two symmetric alternatives), and ${\mathcal E}$ is a non-self-similar Dirichlet form independent of $a_0, b_0$. The second situation has also been studied in [Hattori et al 1994][Hambley et al 2002] as a one-dimensional asymptotic diffusion process on the Sierpiński gasket. For the spectral property, we give a sharp estimate of the eigenvalue distribution of the associated Laplacian, which improves a similar result in [Hambley et al 2002].

Boundary Value Problems for harmonic functions on domains in Sierpinski gaskets

We study boundary value problems for harmonic functions on certain domains in the level-$l$ Sierpinski gaskets $\mathcal{SG}_l$($l\geq 2$) whose boundaries are Cantor sets. We give explicit analogues of the Poisson integral formula to recover harmonic functions from their boundary values. Three types of domains, the left half domain of $\mathcal{SG}_l$ and the upper and lower domains generated by horizontal cuts of $\mathcal{SG}_l$ are considered at present. We characterize harmonic functions of finite energy and obtain their energy estimates in terms of their boundary values. This paper settles several open problems raised in previous work.
