Theory of activated-rate processes under shear with application to shear-induced aggregation of colloids

Using a novel approximation scheme within the convective diffusion (two body Smoluchowski) equation framework, we unveil the shear-driven aggregation mechanism at the origin of structure-formation in sheared colloidal systems. The theory, verified against numerics and experiments, explains the induction time followed by explosive (irreversible) rise of viscosity observed in charge-stabilized colloidal and protein systems under steady shear. The Arrhenius-type equation with shear derived here, extending Kramers theory in the presence of shear, is the first analytical result clearly showing the important role of shear-drive in activated-rate processes as they are encountered in soft condensed matter.

Elasticity of arrested short-ranged attractive colloids: homogeneous and heterogeneous glasses

We evaluate the elasticity of arrested short-ranged attractive colloids by combining an analytically solvable elastic model with a hierarchical arrest scheme into a new approach, which allows to discriminate the microscopic (primary particle-level) from the mesoscopic (cluster-level) contribution to the macroscopic shear modulus. The results quantitatively predict experimental data in a wide range of volume fractions and indicate in which cases the relevant contribution is due to mesoscopic structures. On this basis we propose that different arrested states of short-ranged attractive colloids can be meaningfully distinguished as homogeneous or heterogeneous colloidal glasses in terms of the length-scale which controls their elastic behavior.

Spin blockade, orbital occupation and charge ordering in La_(1.5)Sr_(0.5)CoO4

Using Co-L_(2,3) and O-K x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we reveal that the charge ordering in La_(1.5)Sr_(0.5)CoO4 involves high spin (S=3/2) Co^2+ and low spin (S=0) Co^3+ ions. This provides evidence for the spin blockade phenomenon as a source for the extremely insulating nature of the La_(2-x)Sr_(x)CoO4 series. The associated e_g^2 and e_g^0 orbital occupation accounts for the large contrast in the Co-O bond lengths, and in turn, the high charge ordering temperature. Yet, the low magnetic ordering temperature is naturally explained by the presence of the non-magnetic (S=0) Co^3+ ions. From the identification of the bands we infer that La_(1.5)Sr_(0.5)CoO4 is a narrow band material.

Ising magnetism and ferroelectricity in Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$

The origin of both the Ising chain magnetism and ferroelectricity in Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$ is studied by $ab$ $initio$ electronic structure calculations and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We find that Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$ has the alternate trigonal prismatic Co$^{2+}$ and octahedral Mn$^{4+}$ sites in the spin chain. Both the Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ are in the high spin state. In addition, the Co$^{2+}$ has a huge orbital moment of 1.7 $μ_B$ which is responsible for the significant Ising magnetism. The centrosymmetric crystal structure known so far is calculated to be unstable with respect to exchange striction in the experimentally observed $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$ antiferromagnetic structure for the Ising chain. The calculated inequivalence of the Co-Mn distances accounts for the ferroelectricity.

Homopolar bond formation in ZnV$_2$O$_4$ close to a metal-insulator transition

Electronic structure calculations for spinel vanadate ZnV$_2$O$_4$ show that partial electronic delocalization in this system leads to structural instabilities. These are a consequence of the proximity to the itinerant-electron boundary, not being related to orbital ordering. We discuss how this mechanism naturally couples charge and lattice degrees of freedom in magnetic insulators close to such a crossover. For the case of ZnV$_2$O$_4$, this leads to the formation of V-V dimers along the [011] and [101] directions that readily accounts for the intriguing magnetic structure of ZnV$_2$O$_4$.

Local electronic structure and magnetic properties of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 studied by x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy

We have studied the local electronic structure of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 using soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-L_3,2 and Mn-L_3,2 edges. We found a high-spin Co^{2+}--Mn^{4+} valence state for samples with the optimal Curie temperature. We discovered that samples with lower Curie temperatures contain low-spin nonmagnetic Co^{3+} ions. Using soft-x-ray magnetic circular dichroism we established that the Co^{2+} and Mn^{4+} ions are ferromagnetically aligned. We revealed also that the Co^{2+} ions have a large orbital moment: m_orb/m_spin ~ 0.47. Together with model calculations, this suggests the presence of a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the material and predicts a non-trivial temperature dependence for the magnetic susceptibility.

X-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic dichroism study on Ca3CoRhO6 and Ca3FeRhO6

Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Rh-L_2,3, Co-L_2,3, and Fe-L_2,3 edges, we find a valence state of Co^2+/Rh^4+ in Ca3CoRhO6 and of Fe^3+/Rh^3+ in Ca3FeRhO6. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Co-L_2,3 edge of Ca3CoRhO6 reveals a giant orbital moment of about 1.7mu_B, which can be attributed to the occupation of the minority-spin d_0d_2 orbital state of the high-spin Co^2+ (3d^7) ions in trigonal prismatic coordination. This active role of the spin-orbit coupling explains the strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Ising-like magnetism of Ca3CoRhO6.

Orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$AgF$_4$ from first principles

We found, using density-functional theory calculations within the generalized gradient approximation, that Cs$_2$AgF$_4$ is stabilized in the insulating orthorhombic phase rather than in the metallic tetragonal phase. The lattice distortion present in the orthorhombic phase corresponds to the $x^2-z^2$/$y^2-z^2$ hole-orbital ordering of the Ag$^{2+}$ $4d^9$ ions, and this orbital ordering leads to the observed ferromagnetism, as confirmed by the present total-energy calculations. This picture holds in the presence of moderate 4d-electron correlation. The results are compared with the picture of ferromagnetism based on the metallic tetragonal phase.

Insulating state and the importance of the spin-orbit coupling in Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$

We have carried out a comparative theoretical study of the electronic structure of the novel one-dimensional Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$ and Ca$_3$FeRhO$_6$ systems. The insulating antiferromagnetic state for the Ca$_3$FeRhO$_6$ can be well explained by band structure calculations with the closed shell high-spin $d^5$ (Fe$^{3+}$) and low-spin $t_{2g}^{6}$ (Rh$^{3+}$) configurations. We found for the Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$ that the Co has a strong tendency to be $d^7$ (Co$^{2+}$) rather than $d^6$ (Co$^{3+}$), and that there is an orbital degeneracy in the local Co electronic structure. We argue that it is the spin-orbit coupling which will lift this degeneracy thereby enabling local spin density approximation + Hubbard U (LSDA+U) band structure calculations to generate the band gap. We predict that the orbital contribution to the magnetic moment in Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$ is substantial, i.e. significantly larger than 1 $μ_B$ per formula unit. Moreover, we propose a model for the contrasting intra-chain magnetism in both materials.

Density-functional theory study of half-metallic heterostructures: interstitial Mn in Si

Using density-functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation, we show that Si-based heterostructures with 1/4 layer $δ$-doping of {\em interstitial} Mn (Mn$_{\mathrm int}$) are half-metallic. For Mn$_{\mathrm int}$ concentrations of 1/2 or 1 layer, the states induced in the band gap of $δ$-doped heterostructures still display high spin polarization, about 85% and 60%, respectively. The proposed heterostructures are more stable than previously assumed $δ$-layers of {\em substitutional} Mn. Contrary to wide-spread belief, the present study demonstrates that {\em interstitial} Mn can be utilized to tune the magnetic properties of Si, and thus provides a new clue for Si-based spintronics materials.

Orbitally driven spin-singlet dimerization in $S$=1 La$_{4}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{10}$

Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ru-$L_{2,3}$ edge we reveal that the Ru$^{4+}$ ions remain in the $S$=1 spin state across the rare 4d-orbital ordering transition and spin-gap formation. We find using local spin density approximation + Hubbard U (LSDA+U) band structure calculations that the crystal fields in the low temperature phase are not strong enough to stabilize the $S$=0 state. Instead, we identify a distinct orbital ordering with a significant anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic exchange couplings. We conclude that La$_{4}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{10}$ appears to be a novel material in which the orbital physics drives the formation of spin-singlet dimers in a quasi 2-dimensional $S$=1 system.

Electronic structure of $RE$AuMg and $RE$AgMg ($RE$ = Eu, Gd, Yb)

We have investigated the electronic structure of the equiatomic EuAuMg, GdAuMg, YbAuMg and GdAgMg intermetallics using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectra revealed that the Yb and Eu are divalent while the Gd is trivalent. The spectral weight in the vicinity of the Fermi level is dominated by the mix of Mg $s$, Au/Ag $sp$ and $RE$ $spd$ bands, and not by the $RE$ $4f$. We also found that the Au and Ag $d$ bands are extraordinarily narrow, as if the noble metal atoms were impurities submerged in a low density $sp$ metal host. The experimental results were compared with band structure calculations, and we found good agreement provided that the spin-orbit interaction in the Au an Ag $d$ bands is included and correlation effects in an open $4f$ shell are accounted for using the local density approximation + Hubbard $U$ scheme. Nevertheless, limitations of such a mean-field scheme to explain excitation spectra are also evident.

Nature of magnetism in Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$

We find using LSDA+U band structure calculations that the novel one-dimensional cobaltate Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$ is not a ferromagnetic half-metal but a Mott insulator. Both the octahedral and the trigonal Co ions are formally trivalent, with the octahedral being in the low-spin and the trigonal in the high-spin state. The inclusion of the spin-orbit coupling leads to the occupation of the minority-spin $d_{2}$ orbital for the unusually coordinated trigonal Co, producing a giant orbital moment (1.57 $μ_{B}$). It also results in an anomalously large magnetocrystalline anisotropy (of order 70 meV), elucidating why the magnetism is highly Ising-like. The role of the oxygen holes, carrying an induced magnetic moment of 0.13 $μ_{B}$ per oxygen, for the exchange interactions is discussed.

First-principles study of thin magnetic transition-metal silicide films on Si(001)

In order to combine silicon technology with the functionality of magnetic systems, a number of ferromagnetic (FM) materials have been suggested for the fabrication of metal/semiconductor heterojunctions. In this work, we present a systematic study of several candidate materials in contact with the Si surface. We employ density-functional theory calculations to address the thermodynamic stability and magnetism of both pseudomorphic CsCl-like $M$Si ($M$=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) thin films and Heusler alloy $M_2$MnSi ($M$=Fe, Co, Ni) films on Si(001). Our calculations show that Si-termination of the $M$Si films is energetically preferable during epitaxy since it minimizes the energetic cost of broken bonds at the surface. Moreover, we can explain the calculated trends in thermodynamic stability of the $M$Si thin films in terms of the $M$-Si bond-strength and the $M$ 3d orbital occupation. From our calculations, we predict that ultrathin MnSi films are FM with sizable spin magnetic moments at the Mn atoms, while FeSi and NiSi films are nonmagnetic. However, CoSi films display itinerant ferromagnetism. For the $M_2$MnSi films with Heusler-type structure, the MnSi termination is found to have the highest thermodynamic stability. In the FM ground state, the calculated strength of the effective coupling between the magnetic moments of Mn atoms within the same layer approximately scales with the measured Curie temperatures of the bulk $M_2$MnSi compounds. In particular, the Co$_2$MnSi/Si(001) thin film has a robust FM ground state as in the bulk, and is found to be stable against a phase separation into CoSi/Si(001) and MnSi/Si(001) films. Hence this material is of possible use in FM-Si heterojunctions and deserves further experimental investigations.

A different look at the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ ions in CoO$_{5}$ pyramidal coordination

Using soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ and O-$K$ edges, we demonstrate that the Co$^{3+}$ ions with the CoO$_{5}$ pyramidal coordination in the layered Sr$_2$CoO$_3$Cl compound are unambiguously in the high spin state. Our result questions the reliability of the spin state assignments made so far for the recently synthesized layered cobalt perovskites, and calls for a re-examination of the modeling for the complex and fascinating properties of these new materials.

Magnetic influence on the frequency of the soft-phonon mode in the incipient ferroelectric EuTiO3

The dielectric constant of the incipient ferroelectric EuTiO$_3$ exhibits a sharp decrease at about 5.5K, at which temperature antiferromagnetic ordering of the Eu spins simultaneously appears, indicating coupling between the magnetism and dielectric properties. This may be attributed to the modification of the soft-phonon mode, $T_{1μ}$, which is the main contribution to the large dielectric constant, by the Eu spins(7$μ_B$ per Eu). By adding the coupling term between the magnetic and electrical subsystems as $ -g\sum\limits_l {\sum\limits_{< {i,j}} {q_l^2}} \overrightarrow {S_i} \cdot \overrightarrow {S_j} $ we show that the variation of the frequency of soft-phonon mode depends on the spin correlation between the nearest neighbors Eu spins and is substantially changed under a magnetic field.

Phase evolution of layered cobalt oxides versus varying corrugation of the cobalt-oxygen basal plane

A general spin-state model and a qualitative physical picture have been proposed for a class of lately synthesized layered cobalt oxides (LCOs) by means of density functional calculations. As the plane corrugation of the cobalt-oxygen layer decreases, the LCOs evolve from a high-spin (HS) superexchange-coupled antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator to an almost-HS AFM/ferromagnetic (FM) competing system where the FM coupling is mediated via the p-d exchange by an increasing amount of delocalized pdσholes having mainly the planar O 2p character. It is tentatively suggested that the delocalized holes more than 0.3 per CoO_{2} basal square are likely necessary for the insulator-metal and/or AFM-FM transitions in the corrugation-weakened LCOs. A phase control may be realized in LCOs by varying the plane corrugation (thus modifying the hole concentration) through an ionic-size change of the neighboring layers on both sides of the cobalt-oxygen layer. In addition, a few experiments are suggested for a check of the present model and picture.

Electronic structure study of double perovskites $A_{2}$FeReO$_{6}$ (A=Ba,Sr,Ca) and Sr$_{2}M$MoO$_{6}$ (M=Cr,Mn,Fe,Co) by LSDA and LSDA+U

We have implemented a systematic LSDA and LSDA+U study of the double perovskites $A_{2}$FeReO$_{6}$ (A=Ba,Sr,Ca) and Sr$_{2}$$M$MoO$_{6}$ (M=Cr,Mn,Fe,Co) for understanding of their intriguing electronic and magnetic properties. The results suggest a ferrimagnetic (FiM) and half-metallic (HM) state of $A_{2}$FeReO$_{6}$ (A=Ba,Sr) due to a pdd-$π$ coupling between the down-spin Re$^{5+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals via the intermediate O $2p_π$ ones, also a very similar FiM and HM state of Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$. In contrast, a decreasing Fe $t_{2g}$ component at Fermi level ($E_{F}$) in the distorted Ca$_{2}$FeReO$_{6}$ partly accounts for its nonmetallic behavior, while a finite $pdd$-$σ$ coupling between the down-spin Re$^{5+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ $e_{g}$ orbitals being present at $E_{F}$ serves to stabilize its FiM state. For Sr$_{2}$CrMoO$_{6}$ compared with Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$, the coupling between the down-spin Mo$^{5+}$/Cr$^{3+}$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals decreases as a noticeable shift up of the Cr$^{3+}$ 3d levels, which is likely responsible for the decreasing $T_{C}$ value and weak conductivity. Moreover, the calculated level distributions indicate a Mn$^{2+}$(Co$^{2+}$)/Mo$^{6+}$ ionic state in Sr$_{2}$MnMoO$_{6}$ (Sr$_{2}$CoMoO$_{6}$), in terms of which their antiferromagnetic insulating ground state can be interpreted. While orbital population analyses show that owing to strong intrinsic pd covalence effects, Sr$_{2}M$MoO$_{6}$ (M=Cr,Mn,Fe,Co) have nearly the same valence state combinations, as accounts for the similar M-independent spectral features observed in them.
