AdapINT: A Flexible and Adaptive In-Band Network Telemetry System Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

In-band Network Telemetry (INT) has emerged as a promising network measurement technology. However, existing network telemetry systems lack the flexibility to meet diverse telemetry requirements and are also difficult to adapt to dynamic network environments. In this paper, we propose AdapINT, a versatile and adaptive in-band network telemetry framework assisted by dual-timescale probes, including long-period auxiliary probes (APs) and short-period dynamic probes (DPs). Technically, the APs collect basic network status information, which is used for the path planning of DPs. To achieve full network coverage, we propose an auxiliary probes path deployment (APPD) algorithm based on the Depth-First-Search (DFS). The DPs collect specific network information for telemetry tasks. To ensure that the DPs can meet diverse telemetry requirements and adapt to dynamic network environments, we apply the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) technique and transfer learning method to design the dynamic probes path deployment (DPPD) algorithm. The evaluation results show that AdapINT can redesign the telemetry system according to telemetry requirements and network environments. AdapINT can reduce telemetry latency by 75\% in online games and video conferencing scenarios. For overhead-aware networks, AdapINT can reduce control overheads by 34\% in cloud computing services.

Precessing jet nozzle connecting to a spinning black hole in M87

The nearby radio galaxy M87 offers a unique opportunity to explore the connections between the central supermassive black hole and relativistic jets. Previous studies of the inner region of M87 revealed a wide opening angle for the jet originating near the black hole. The Event Horizon Telescope resolved the central radio source and found an asymmetric ring structure consistent with expectations from General Relativity. With a baseline of 17 years of observations, there was a shift in the jet's transverse position, possibly arising from an eight to ten-year quasi-periodicity. However, the origin of this sideways shift remains unclear. Here we report an analysis of radio observations over 22 years that suggests a period of about 11 years in the position angle variation of the jet. We infer that we are seeing a spinning black hole that induces the Lense-Thirring precession of a misaligned accretion disk. Similar jet precession may commonly occur in other active galactic nuclei but has been challenging to detect owing to the small magnitude and long period of the variation.

Percolation-induced resistivity drop in cold-pressed LuH2

The stoichiometric bulk LuH2 is a paramagnetic metal with high electrical conductivity comparable to simple metals. Here we show that the resistivity of cold-pressed (CP) LuH2 samples varies sensitively upon modifying the grain size or surface conditions via the grinding process, i.e., the CP pellets made of commercially purchased LuH2 powder remain metallic but exhibit thousands of times higher resistivity, while additional grinding of LuH2 powders in air further enhances the resistivity and even results in weakly localized behaviors. For these CP samples, interestingly, we can occasionally observe abrupt resistivity drops at high temperatures, which also show dependences on magnetic fields and electrical current. Measurements of variable-temperature XRD, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat exclude the possibilities of structural, magnetic, and superconducting transitions for the observed resistivity drops. Instead, we tentatively attribute these above observations to the presence of insulating layers on the grain surface due to the modification of hydrogen stoichiometry or the pollution by oxygen/nitrogen. Percolation of the metallic grains through the insulating surfaces can explain the sudden drop in resistivity. The present results thus call for caution in asserting the resistivity drops as superconductivity and invalidate the background subtraction in analyzing the resistivity data.

Anomalously high supercurrent density in a two-dimensional topological material

Ongoing advances in superconductors continue to revolutionize technology thanks to the increasingly versatile and robust availability of lossless supercurrent. In particular high supercurrent density can lead to more efficient and compact power transmission lines, high-field magnets, as well as high-performance nanoscale radiation detectors and superconducting spintronics. Here, we report the discovery of an unprecedentedly high superconducting critical current density (17 MA/cm2 at 0 T and 7 MA/cm2 at 8 T) in 1T'-WS2, exceeding those of all reported two-dimensional superconductors to date. 1T'-WS2 features a strongly anisotropic (both in- and out-of-plane) superconducting state that violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit signaling the presence of unconventional superconductivity. Spectroscopic imaging of the vortices further substantiates the anisotropic nature of the superconducting state. More intriguingly, the normal state of 1T'-WS2 carries topological properties. The band structure obtained via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations points to a Z2 topological invariant. The concomitance of topology and superconductivity in 1T'-WS2 establishes it as a topological superconductor candidate, which is promising for the development of quantum computing technology.

A GOA-Based Fault-Tolerant Trajectory Tracking Control for an Underwater Vehicle of Multi-Thruster System without Actuator Saturation

This paper proposes an intelligent fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy to tackle the trajectory tracking problem of an underwater vehicle (UV) under thruster damage (power loss) cases and meanwhile resolve the actuator saturation brought by the vehicle's physical constraints. In the proposed control strategy, the trajectory tracking component is formed by a refined backstepping algorithm that controls the velocity variation and a sliding mode control deducts the torque/force outputs; the fault-tolerant component is established based on a Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA), which provides fast convergence speed as well as satisfactory accuracy of deducting optimized reallocation of the thruster forces to compensate for the power loss in different fault cases. Simulations with or without environmental perturbations under different fault cases and comparisons to other traditional FTCs are presented, thus verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed GOA-based fault-tolerant trajectory tracking design.

Overview of the Observing System and Initial Scientific Accomplishments of the East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN)

The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 hours in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the 'Global VLBI Alliance' to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth.

Quasi two-dimensional nature of high-Tc superconductivity in iron-based (Li,Fe)OHFeSe

The intercalated iron selenide (Li,Fe)OHFeSe has a strongly layered structure analogous to the quasi two-dimensional (2D) bismuth cuprate superconductors, and exhibits both high-temperature (Tc) and topological superconductivity. However, the issue of its superconductivity dimensionality has not yet been fully investigated so far. Here we report that the quasi-2D superconductivity features, including the high anisotropy γ = 151 and the associated quasi-2D vortices, are also revealed for (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, based on systematic experiments of the electrical transport and magnetization and model fittings. Thus, we establish a new vortex phase diagram for (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, which delineates an emergent quasi-2D vortex-liquid state, and a subsequent vortex-solid dimensional crossover from a pancake-like to a three-dimensional state with decreasing temperature and magnetic field. Furthermore, we find that all the quasi-2D characteristics revealed here for the high-Tc iron selenide superconductor are very similar to those reported for the high-Tc bismuth cuprate superconductors.

Detecting the oscillation and propagation of the nascent dynamic solar wind structure at 2.6 solar radii using VLBI radio telescopes

Probing the solar corona is crucial to study the coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. However, the transient and inhomogeneous solar wind flows carry large-amplitude inherent Alfven waves and turbulence, which make detection more difficult. We report the oscillation and propagation of the solar wind at 2.6 solar radii (Rs) by observation of China Tianwen and ESA Mars Express with radio telescopes. The observations were carried out on Oct.9 2021, when one coronal mass ejection (CME) passed across the ray paths of the telescope beams. We obtain the frequency fluctuations (FF) of the spacecraft signals from each individual telescope. Firstly, we visually identify the drift of the frequency spikes at a high spatial resolution of thousands of kilometers along the projected baselines. They are used as traces to estimate the solar wind velocity. Then we perform the cross-correlation analysis on the time series of FF from different telescopes. The velocity variations of solar wind structure along radial and tangential directions during the CME passage are obtained. The oscillation of tangential velocity confirms the detection of streamer wave. Moreover, at the tail of the CME, we detect the propagation of an accelerating fast field-aligned density structure indicating the presence of magnetohydrodynamic waves. This study confirm that the ground station-pairs are able to form particular spatial projection baselines with high resolution and sensitivity to study the detailed propagation of the nascent dynamic solar wind structure.

Titanium doped kagome superconductor CsV3-xTixSb5 and two distinct phases

The vanadium-based kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5 has attracted tremendous attention due to its unexcepted anomalous Hall effect (AHE), charge density waves (CDWs), nematicity, and a pseudogap pair density wave (PDW) coexisting with unconventional strong-coupling superconductivity (SC). The origins of CDWs, unconventional SC, and their correlation with different electronic states in this kagome system are of great significance, but so far, are still under debate. Chemical doping in the kagome layer provides one of the most direct ways to reveal the intrinsic physics, but remains unexplored. Here, we report, for the first time, the synthesis of Ti-substituted CsV3Sb5 single crystals and its rich phase diagram mapping the evolution of intertwining electronic states. The Ti atoms directly substitute for V in the kagome layers. CsV3-xTixSb5 shows two distinct SC phases upon substitution. The Ti slightly-substituted phase displays an unconventional V-shaped SC gap, coexisting with weakening CDW, PDW, AHE, and nematicity. The Ti highly-substituted phase has a U-shaped SC gap concomitant with a short-range rotation symmetry breaking CDW, while long-range CDW, twofold symmetry of in-plane resistivity, AHE, and PDW are absent. Furthermore, we also demonstrate the chemical substitution of V atoms with other elements such as Cr and Nb, showing a different modulation on the SC phase and CDWs. These findings open up a way to synthesise a new family of doped CsV3Sb5 materials, and further representing a new platform for tuning the different correlated electronic states and superconducting pairing in kagome superconductors.

Failure behaviors and processing maps with failure domains for hot compression of a powder metallurgy Ni-based superalloy

Processing maps are key to guiding the thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) of superalloys. However, traditional processing maps are incapable of delimiting failure, which is an essential factor to be concerned about during the TMP of superalloys. Employing isothermal hot compression experiments and finite element analysis (FEA), the present study examined the failure behaviors of a powder metallurgy (P/M) Ni-based superalloy and constructed processing maps with failure domains based on the predicted failure threshold. The micromechanical Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) damage model was employed in the FEA to model the cavity-driven intergranular fracture of the superalloy. Deformation temperature and strain rate were considered in the range of 1050 ~ 1150 C and 0.001 ~ 1 s-1, respectively. The FEA results reveal that the maximum tensile stress locates at the outer budging surfaces of the samples, which causes failure initiation and subsequent propagation into longitudinal cracks, being consistent with the experiments. It is further demonstrated that the failure is strain-controlled and the critical failure strain remains nearly insensitive to the range of strain rates considered while increasing with the increase of temperature in a third-order polynomial. Finally, an optimized processing window for hot deformation of the superalloy is formulated to warrant good hot workability while avoiding flow instability and failure. The present study offers direct insights into the failure behaviors of P/M Ni-based superalloys and details a modeling strategy to delineate optimized parametric spaces for the TMP of superalloys.

A disorder-sensitive emergent vortex phase identified in high-Tc superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe

The magneto-transport properties are systematically measured under c-direction fields up to 33 T for a series of single-crystal films of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe. The film samples with varying degree of disorder are grown hydrothermally. We observe a magnetic-field-enhanced shoulder-like feature in the mixed state of the high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films with weak disorder, while the feature fades away in the films with enhanced disorder. The irreversibility field is significantly suppressed to lower temperatures with the appearance of the shoulder feature. Based on the experiment and model analysis, we establish a new vortex phase diagram for the weakly disordered high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, which features an emergent dissipative vortex phase intermediate between the common vortex glass and liquid phases. The reason for the emergence of this intermediate vortex state is further discussed based on related experiments and models.

Acquisition of Channel State Information for mmWave Massive MIMO: Traditional and Machine Learning-based Approaches

The accuracy of channel state information (CSI) acquisition directly affects the performance of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. In this article, we provide an overview on CSI acquisition, including beam training and channel estimation for mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. The beam training can avoid the estimation of a high-dimension channel matrix while the channel estimation can flexibly exploit advanced signal processing techniques. In addition to introducing the traditional and machine learning-based approaches in this article, we also compare different approaches in terms of spectral efficiency, computational complexity, and overhead.

Epitaxial stabilization of an orthorhombic Mg-Ti-O superconductor

The family of titanium oxide superconductors exhibits many intriguing phenomena comparable to cuprates and iron pnictides/chalcogenides, and thus provides an ideal platform to contrastively study the unconventional pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductors. Here, we successfully deposit superconducting Mg-Ti-O films on MgAl$_2$O$_4$ substrates with three principal orientations by ablating a MgTi$_2$O$_4$ target. Particularly, it is striking to observed that a single-crystalline film of an unintended structure has been grown on the (011)-oriented substrate, with the highest zero resistance transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}0}$) of 5.0 K among them. The film has a highly reduced Mg/Ti ratio and an orthorhombic Ti$_9$O$_{10}$-like structure (denoted as Mg: Ti$_9$O$_{10}$), demonstrated by further characterizations of chemical composition and structure. Such a structure is unstable in bulk but favorable to be epitaxially stabilized on the (011)-surface of MgAl$_2$O$_4$ due to a relatively small strain at the formed interface. An isotropic upper critical field ($B_{\mathrm{c}2}$) up to 13.7 T that breaks the Pauli limit is observed in the Mg: Ti$_9$O$_{10}$ film, analogous to other superconducting titanium oxides. The similarity points to a common origin for the superconductivity in the family, which will provide valuable opinions for the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in transition metal compounds.

Collaborative Radio SLAM for Multiple Robots based on WiFi Fingerprint Similarity

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) enables autonomous robots to navigate and execute their tasks through unknown environments. However, performing SLAM in large environments with a single robot is not efficient, and visual or LiDAR-based SLAM requires feature extraction and matching algorithms, which are computationally expensive. In this paper, we present a collaborative SLAM approach with multiple robots using the pervasive WiFi radio signals. A centralized solution is proposed to optimize the trajectory based on the odometry and radio fingerprints collected from multiple robots. To improve the localization accuracy, a novel similarity model is introduced that combines received signal strength (RSS) and detection likelihood of an access point (AP). We perform extensive experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed similarity model and collaborative SLAM framework.

Roton pair density wave and unconventional strong-coupling superconductivity in a topological kagome metal

The transition-metal kagome lattice materials host frustrated, correlated, and topological quantum states of matter. Recently, a new family of vanadium-based kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) with topological band structures has been discovered. These layered compounds are nonmagnetic and undergo charge density wave transitions before developing superconductivity at low temperatures. Here we report the observation of unconventional superconductivity and pair density wave (PDW) in CsV3Sb5 using scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and Josephson STS. We find that CsV3Sb5 exhibits a V-shaped pairing gap Δ~0.5 meV and is a strong-coupling superconductor (2Δ/kBTc~5) that coexists with 4a0 unidirectional and 2a0X2a0 charge order. Remarkably, we discover a 3Q PDW accompanied by bidirectional 4a0/3 spatial modulations of the superconducting gap, coherence peak and gap-depth in the tunneling conductance. We term this novel quantum state a roton-PDW associated with an underlying vortex-antivortex lattice that can account for the observed conductance modulations. Probing the electronic states in the vortex halo in an applied magnetic field, in strong-field that suppresses superconductivity, and in zero-field above Tc reveals that the PDW is a primary state responsible for an emergent pseudogap and intertwined electronic order. Our findings show striking analogies and distinctions to the phenomenology of high-Tc cuprate superconductors, and provide groundwork for understanding the microscopic origin of correlated electronic states and superconductivity in vanadium-based kagome metals.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Spin Nematicity in FeSe1-xSx and FeSe1-yTey Superconductor Systems

The angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) of the ab plane is measured on the single crystals of FeSe1-xSx (x = 0, 0.07, 0.13 and 1) and FeSe1-yTey (y = 0.06, 0.61 and 1) at various temperatures under fields up to 9 T. A pronounced twofold-anisotropic carrier-scattering effect is identified by AMR, and attributed to a magnetic-field-induced spin nematicity that emerges from the tetragonal normal-state regime below a characteristic temperature Tsn. This magnetically polarized spin nematicity is found to be ubiquitous in the isoelectronic FeSe1-xSx and FeSe1-yTey systems, no matter whether the sample shows an electronic nematic order at Ts < Tsn, or an antiferromagnetic order at TN < Tsn, or neither order. Importantly, we find that the isoelectronic substitution with sulfur does not suppress but even enhances the characteristic Tsn of the induced spin nematicity in FeSe1-xSx samples. This contrasts sharply with their rapidly suppressed Ts, the transition temperature of the spontaneous electronic nematicity. Furthermore, we find that the superconductivity is significantly suppressed with the enhancement of the induced spin nematicity in both FeSe1-xSx and FeSe1-yTey samples.

VLBI data processing on coronal radio-sounding experiments of Mars express

The ESA's Mars Express solar corona experiments were performed at two solar conjunctions in the years 2015 and 2017 by a number of radio telescopes in the European VLBI Network. This paper presents the methods to measure the frequency and phase fluctuations of the spacecraft radio signal, and the applications to study the characteristics of the plasma turbulence effects on the signal at a single station and at multiple stations via cross-correlation. The power spectra of the frequency fluctuations observed between 4.9 and 76.3 $\rm R_{s}$ have a power-law shape close to a Kolmogorov spectrum over the frequency interval $ ν_{lo}< ν<ν_{up}$, where the nominal value of $ν_{lo}$ is set to 3 mHz and $ν_{up}$ is in the range of 0.03 $\sim$ 0.15 Hz. The RMS of the frequency fluctuations is presented as a function of the heliocentric distance. Furthermore, we analyse the variations of the electron column density fluctuations at solar offsets 4.9 $\rm{R_{s}}$ and 9.9 $\rm{R_{s}}$ and the cross-correlation products between the VLBI stations. The power density of the differential fluctuations between different stations decreases at $ν< 0.01$ Hz. Finally, the fast flow speeds of solar wind $>700$ $\rm{km~s^{-1}}$ are derived from the cross-correlation of frequency fluctuations at $ν< 0.01$ Hz. The fast flow speeds of solar wind correspond to the high heliolatitude of the coronal region that the radio rays passed. The VLBI observations and analysis methods can be used to study the electron column density fluctuations and the turbulence at multiple spatial points in the inner solar wind by providing multiple lines of sight between the Earth and the spacecraft.

Deep CNN-Based Channel Estimation for mmWave Massive MIMO Systems

For millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, hybrid processing architecture is usually used to reduce the complexity and cost, which poses a very challenging issue in channel estimation. In this paper, deep convolutional neural network (CNN) is employed to address this problem. We first propose a spatial-frequency CNN (SF-CNN) based channel estimation exploiting both the spatial and frequency correlation, where the corrupted channel matrices at adjacent subcarriers are input into the CNN simultaneously. Then, exploiting the temporal correlation in time-varying channels, a spatial-frequency-temporal CNN (SFT-CNN) based approach is developed to further improve the accuracy. Moreover, we design a spatial pilot-reduced CNN (SPR-CNN) to save spatial pilot overhead for channel estimation, where channels in several successive coherence intervals are grouped and estimated by a channel estimation unit with memory. Numerical results show that the proposed SF-CNN and SFT-CNN based approaches outperform the non-ideal minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) estimator but with reduced complexity, and achieve the performance close to the ideal MMSE estimator that is very difficult to be implemented in practical situations. They are also robust to different propagation scenarios. The SPR-CNN based approach achieves comparable performance to SF-CNN and SFT-CNN based approaches while only requires about one third of spatial pilot overhead at the cost of complexity. Our work clearly shows that deep CNN can efficiently exploit channel correlation to improve the estimation performance for mmWave massive MIMO systems.
