A Semiparametric Bayesian Method for Instrumental Variable Analysis with Partly Interval-Censored Time-to-Event Outcome

This paper develops a semiparametric Bayesian instrumental variable analysis method for estimating the causal effect of an endogenous variable when dealing with unobserved confounders and measurement errors with partly interval-censored time-to-event data, where event times are observed exactly for some subjects but left-censored, right-censored, or interval-censored for others. Our method is based on a two-stage Dirichlet process mixture instrumental variable (DPMIV) model which simultaneously models the first-stage random error term for the exposure variable and the second-stage random error term for the time-to-event outcome using a bivariate Gaussian mixture of the Dirichlet process (DPM) model. The DPM model can be broadly understood as a mixture model with an unspecified number of Gaussian components, which relaxes the normal error assumptions and allows the number of mixture components to be determined by the data. We develop an MCMC algorithm for the DPMIV model tailored for partly interval-censored data and conduct extensive simulations to assess the performance of our DPMIV method in comparison with some competing methods. Our simulations revealed that our proposed method is robust under different error distributions and can have superior performance over its parametric counterpart under various scenarios. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on an UK Biobank data to investigate the causal effect of systolic blood pressure on time-to-development of cardiovascular disease from the onset of diabetes mellitus.

Electron ptychography reveals a ferroelectricity dominated by anion displacements

Sodium niobate, a lead-free ferroic material, hosts delicately-balanced, competing order parameters, including ferroelectric states that can be stabilized by epitaxial strain. Here, we show that the resulting macroscopic ferroelectricity exhibits an unconventional microscopic structure using multislice electron ptychography. This technique overcomes multiple scattering artifacts limiting conventional electron microscopy, enabling both lateral spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit and recovery of three-dimensional structural information. These imaging capabilities allow us to separate the ferroelectric interior of the sample from the relaxed surface structure and identify the soft phonon mode and related structural distortions with picometer precision. Unlike conventional ferroelectric perovskites, we find that the polar distortion in this material involves minimal distortions of the cation sublattices and is instead dominated by anion displacements relative to the niobium sublattice. We establish limits on film thickness for interfacial octahedral rotation engineering and directly visualize a random octahedral rotation pattern, arising from the flat dispersion of the associated phonon mode.

CareBot: A Pioneering Full-Process Open-Source Medical Language Model

Recently, both closed-source LLMs and open-source communities have made significant strides, outperforming humans in various general domains. However, their performance in specific professional domains such as medicine, especially within the open-source community, remains suboptimal due to the complexity of medical knowledge. In this paper, we propose CareBot, a bilingual medical LLM, which leverages a comprehensive approach integrating continuous pre-training (CPT), supervised fine-tuning (SFT), and reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF). Our novel two-stage CPT method, comprising Stable CPT and Boost CPT, effectively bridges the gap between general and domain-specific data, facilitating a smooth transition from pre-training to fine-tuning and enhancing domain knowledge progressively. We also introduce DataRater, a model designed to assess data quality during CPT, ensuring that the training data is both accurate and relevant. For SFT, we develope a large and diverse bilingual dataset, along with ConFilter, a metric to enhance multi-turn dialogue quality, which is crucial to improving the model's ability to handle more complex dialogues. The combination of high-quality data sources and innovative techniques significantly improves CareBot's performance across a range of medical applications. Our rigorous evaluations on Chinese and English benchmarks confirm CareBot's effectiveness in medical consultation and education. These advancements not only address current limitations in medical LLMs but also set a new standard for developing effective and reliable open-source models in the medical domain. We will open-source the datasets and models later, contributing valuable resources to the research community.

Smaller Language Models Are Better Instruction Evolvers

Instruction tuning has been widely used to unleash the complete potential of large language models. Notably, complex and diverse instructions are of significant importance as they can effectively align models with various downstream tasks. However, current approaches to constructing large-scale instructions predominantly favour powerful models such as GPT-4 or those with over 70 billion parameters, under the empirical presumption that such larger language models (LLMs) inherently possess enhanced capabilities. In this study, we question this prevalent assumption and conduct an in-depth exploration into the potential of smaller language models (SLMs) in the context of instruction evolution. Extensive experiments across three scenarios of instruction evolution reveal that smaller language models (SLMs) can synthesize more effective instructions than LLMs. Further analysis demonstrates that SLMs possess a broader output space during instruction evolution, resulting in more complex and diverse variants. We also observe that the existing metrics fail to focus on the impact of the instructions. Thus, we propose Instruction Complex-Aware IFD (IC-IFD), which introduces instruction complexity in the original IFD score to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction data more accurately. MoSLD: An Extremely Parameter-Efficient Mixture-of-Shared LoRAs for Multi-Task Learning

Recently, LoRA has emerged as a crucial technique for fine-tuning large pre-trained models, yet its performance in multi-task learning scenarios often falls short. In contrast, the MoE architecture presents a natural solution to this issue. However, it introduces challenges such as mutual interference of data across multiple domains and knowledge forgetting of various tasks. Additionally, MoE significantly increases the number of parameters, posing a computational cost challenge. Therefore, in this paper, we propose MoSLD, a mixture-of-shared-LoRAs model with a dropout strategy. MoSLD addresses these challenges by sharing the upper projection matrix in LoRA among different experts, encouraging the model to learn general knowledge across tasks, while still allowing the lower projection matrix to focus on the unique features of each task. The application of dropout alleviates the imbalanced update of parameter matrix and mitigates parameter overfitting in LoRA. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model exhibits excellent performance in both single-task and multi-task scenarios, with robust out-of-domain generalization capabilities.

A Flexible Quasi-Copula Distribution for Statistical Modeling

Copulas, generalized estimating equations, and generalized linear mixed models promote the analysis of grouped data where non-normal responses are correlated. Unfortunately, parameter estimation remains challenging in these three frameworks. Based on prior work of Tonda, we derive a new class of probability density functions that allow explicit calculation of moments, marginal and conditional distributions, and the score and observed information needed in maximum likelihood estimation. We also illustrate how the new distribution flexibly models longitudinal data following a non-Gaussian distribution. Finally, we conduct a tri-variate genome-wide association analysis on dichotomized systolic and diastolic blood pressure and body mass index data from the UK-Biobank, showcasing the modeling prowess and computational scalability of the new distribution.

MetaOpenFOAM: an LLM-based multi-agent framework for CFD

Remarkable progress has been made in automated problem solving through societies of agents based on large language models (LLMs). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), as a complex problem, presents unique challenges in automated simulations that require sophisticated solutions. MetaOpenFOAM, as a novel multi-agent collaborations framework, aims to complete CFD simulation tasks with only natural language as input. These simulation tasks include mesh pre-processing, simulation and so on. MetaOpenFOAM harnesses the power of MetaGPT's assembly line paradigm, which assigns diverse roles to various agents, efficiently breaking down complex CFD tasks into manageable subtasks. Langchain further complements MetaOpenFOAM by integrating Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, which enhances the framework's ability by integrating a searchable database of OpenFOAM tutorials for LLMs. Tests on a benchmark for natural language-based CFD solver, consisting of eight CFD simulation tasks, have shown that MetaOpenFOAM achieved a high pass rate per test (85%), with each test case costing only $0.22 on average. The eight CFD simulation tasks encompass a range of multidimensional flow problems, covering compressible and incompressible flows with different physical processes. This demonstrates the capability to automate CFD simulations using only natural language input, iteratively correcting errors to achieve the desired simulations. An ablation study was conducted to verify the necessity of each component in the multi-agent system and the RAG technology. A sensitivity study on the randomness of LLM showed that LLM with low randomness can obtain more stable and accurate results. Additionally, MetaOpenFOAM owns the ability to identify and modify key parameters in user requirements, and excels in correcting bugs when failure match occur, which demonstrates the generalization of MetaOpenFOAM.

Improved analysis of the decay width of $t\to Wb$ up to N$^{3}$LO QCD corrections

In this paper, we analyze the top-quark decay $t\to Wb$ up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) QCD corrections. For the purpose, we first adopt the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) to deal with the initial pQCD series. Then we adopt the Bayesian analysis approach, which quantifies the unknown higher-order terms' contributions in terms of a probability distribution, to estimate the possible magnitude of the uncalculated N$^{4}$LO-terms. In our calculation, an effective strong coupling constant $α_{s}(Q_{*})$ is determined by using all non-conformal $\{β_{i}\}$ terms associated with the renormalization group equation. This leads to a next-to-leading-log PMC scale $Q_{*}^{(\rm NLL)}=10.3048$ GeV, which can be regarded as the correct momentum flow of the process. Consequently, we obtain an improved scale-invariant pQCD prediction for the top-quark decay width, e.g. $Γ_{t}^{\rm tot} = 1.3120 \pm 0.0038$ GeV, whose error is the squared average of the uncertainties from the decay width of $W$-boson $ΔΓ_{W} = \pm 0.042$ GeV, the coupling constant $Δα_{s}(m_{Z}) = \pm 0.0009$, and the predicted N$^{4}$LO-terms. The magnitude of the top-quark pole mass greatly affects the total decay width. By further taking the PDG top-quark pole mass error from cross-section measurements into consideration, e.g. $Δm_{t} = \pm 0.7$ GeV, we obtain $Γ_{t}^{\rm tot} = 1.3120 ^{+0.0194}_{-0.0192}$ GeV.

Angle-Resolved Magneto-Chiral Anisotropy in a Non-Centrosymmetric Atomic Layer Superlattice

Chirality in solid-state materials has sparked significant interest due to potential applications of topologically-protected chiral states in next-generation information technology. The electrical magneto-chiral effect (eMChE), arising from relativistic spin-orbit interactions, shows great promise for developing chiral materials and devices for electronic integration. Here we demonstrate an angle-resolved eMChE in an A-B-C-C type atomic-layer superlattice lacking time and space inversion symmetry. We observe non-superimposable enantiomers of left-handed and right-handed tilted uniaxial magnetic anisotropy as the sample rotates under static fields, with the tilting angle reaching a striking 45 degree. Magnetic force microscopy and atomistic simulations correlate the tilt to the emergence and evolution of chiral spin textures. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction lock effect in competition with Zeeman effect is demonstrated to be responsible for the angle-resolved eMChE. Our findings open up a new horizon for engineering angle-resolved magneto-chiral anisotropy, shedding light on the development of novel angle-resolved sensing or writing techniques in chiral spintronics.

Reanalysis of the top-quark pair production via the $e^+ e^-$ annihilation near the threshold region up to N$^3$LO QCD corrections

In this paper, we present an improved analysis of the top-quark pair production via the process $e^{+}e^{-}\to γ^{*}\to t\bar{t}$ near the threshold region up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) QCD corrections. Near the threshold region, the top-quark velocity $v$ tends to zero, leading to Coulomb singularity. To achieve a reasonable prediction in the threshold region, we reconstruct the analytical expression for the Coulomb-terms up to N$^{3}$LO accuracy by using the PSLQ algorithm, whose numerical values agree well with the previous N$^3$LO-level calculations. It is found that the N$^{3}$LO series still has sizable renormalization scale dependence, and to improve the precision of the series, we apply the Principle of Maximum Conformality to eliminate such scale dependence. After that, the Coulomb part is resummed into a Sommerfeld-Gamow-Sakharov factor, which finally leads to a much more reasonable behavior near the threshold region.

Pion condensation in dense QCD, the dilute Bose gas, and speedy Goldstone bosons

We consider pion condensation in QCD at finite isospin density $μ_I$ and zero temperature using two-flavor chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). The pressure is calculated to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the low-energy expansion. In the nonrelativistic limit, we recover the classic result by Lee, Huang, and Yang for the energy density of a dilute Bose gas with an $s$-wave scattering length that includes loop corrections from $χ$PT. In the chiral limit, higher-order calculations are tractable. We calculate the pressure to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the low-energy expansion, which is an expansion in powers of $μ_I^2/(4π)^2f^2$, where $f$ is the (bare) pion decay constant. The spontaneous breakdown of the global internal symmetry $U(1)_{I_3}$ gives rise to a massless Goldstone boson or phonon. We discuss the properties of the low-energy effective theory describing this mode. Finally, we compare our results for the pressure and the speed of sound with recent lattice simulations with 2+1 flavors. The agreement is very good for isospin chemical potentials up to 180-200 MeV, depending on the physical quantity.

High-throughput combinatorial approach expedites the synthesis of a lead-free relaxor ferroelectric system

Developing novel lead-free ferroelectric materials is crucial for next-generation microelectronic technologies that are energy efficient and environment friendly. However, materials discovery and property optimization are typically time-consuming due to the limited throughput of traditional synthesis methods. In this work, we use a high-throughput combinatorial synthesis approach to fabricate lead-free ferroelectric superlattices and solid solutions of (Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BCT) and Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 (BZT) phases with continuous variation of composition and layer thickness. High-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) and analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) demonstrate high film quality and well-controlled compositional gradients. Ferroelectric and dielectric property measurements identify the optimal property point achieved at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) with a composition of 48BZT-52BCT. Displacement vector maps reveal that ferroelectric domain sizes are tunable by varying {BCT-BZT}N superlattice geometry. This high-throughput synthesis approach can be applied to many other material systems to expedite new materials discovery and properties optimization, allowing for the exploration of a large area of phase space within a single growth.

Proximal MCMC for Bayesian Inference of Constrained and Regularized Estimation

This paper advocates proximal Markov Chain Monte Carlo (ProxMCMC) as a flexible and general Bayesian inference framework for constrained or regularized estimation. Originally introduced in the Bayesian imaging literature, ProxMCMC employs the Moreau-Yosida envelope for a smooth approximation of the total-variation regularization term, fixes variance and regularization strength parameters as constants, and uses the Langevin algorithm for the posterior sampling. We extend ProxMCMC to be fully Bayesian by providing data-adaptive estimation of all parameters including the regularization strength parameter. More powerful sampling algorithms such as Hamiltonian Monte Carlo are employed to scale ProxMCMC to high-dimensional problems. Analogous to the proximal algorithms in optimization, ProxMCMC offers a versatile and modularized procedure for conducting statistical inference on constrained and regularized problems. The power of ProxMCMC is illustrated on various statistical estimation and machine learning tasks, the inference of which is traditionally considered difficult from both frequentist and Bayesian perspectives.

Hydrogen-induced tunable remanent polarization in a perovskite nickelate

Materials with field-tunable polarization are of broad interest to condensed matter sciences and solid-state device technologies. Here, using hydrogen (H) donor doping, we modify the room temperature metallic phase of a perovskite nickelate NdNiO3 into an insulating phase with both metastable dipolar polarization and space-charge polarization. We then demonstrate transient negative differential capacitance in thin film capacitors. The space-charge polarization caused by long-range movement and trapping of protons dominates when the electric field exceeds the threshold value. First-principles calculations suggest the polarization originates from the polar structure created by H doping. We find that polarization decays within ~1 second which is an interesting temporal regime for neuromorphic computing hardware design, and we implement the transient characteristics in a neural network to demonstrate unsupervised learning. These discoveries open new avenues for designing novel ferroelectric materials and electrets using light-ion doping.

An updated determination of the pion-photon transition form factor

In this paper, we study the properties of the pion-photon transition form factor (TFF), $γγ^{\ast} \rightarrow π^{0}$, by using the principle of maximum commonality (PMC) to deal with its perturbative QCD contribution up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections. Applying the PMC, we achieve precise pQCD approximant for the TFF in large $Q^2$-region without conventional renormalization scale ambiguity. We also discuss the power suppressed non-valence quark contribution to the TFF, which is important for a sound prediction in low and intermediate $Q^2$-region, e.g. the non-valence quark components affect the TFF by about $1\%$ to $23\%$ when $Q^{2}$ changes down from $40~{\rm GeV^{2}}$ to $4~{\rm GeV^{2}}$. The resultant pion-photon TFF shows a better agreement with previous Belle data. It is hoped that previous discrepancies between the experimental measurements and theoretical predictions could be clarified by the forth-coming precise data on the Belle II measurements.

Low-energy electronic interactions in ferrimagnetic Sr2CrReO6 thin films

We reveal in this study the fundamental low-energy landscape in the ferrimagnetic Sr2CrReO6 double perovskite and describe the underlying mechanisms responsible for the three low-energy excitations below 1.4 eV. Based on resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and magnetic dynamics calculations, and experiments collected from both Sr2CrReO6 powders and epitaxially strained thin films, we reveal a strong competition between spin-orbit coupling, Hund's coupling, and the strain-induced tetragonal crystal field. We also demonstrate that a spin-flip process is at the origin of the lowest excitation at 200 meV, and we bring insights into the predicted presence of orbital ordering in this material. We study the nature of the magnons through a combination of ab initio and spin-wave theory calculations, and show that two nondegenerate magnon bands exist and are dominated either by rhenium or chromium spins. The rhenium band is found to be flat at about 200 meV ($\pm$25 meV) through X-L-W-U high-symmetry points and is dispersive toward $Γ$

An investigation of subgrid mixing timescale modelling in LES of supersonic turbulent flames

The predictive numerical simulation of supersonic turbulent combustion, in which the turbulent intensity is high and the fuel/air mixture is near the flammability limit, remains challenging. An investigation of subgrid mixing timescale modelling in large eddy simulation (LES) of supersonic turbulent flames was carried out in this study. In the Partially Stirred Reactor (PaSR) combustion model, the dissipation-rate-based models estimate the mixing timescale by modeling dissipation rate, which may lead to incorrect estimation of mixing times at different grid resolutions. To solve the existing problem, a gradient-based mixing timescale estimation method was proposed. Subsequently, different approaches of subgrid mixing timescale in PaSR are compared and validated on a supersonic mixing layer, including a dissipation-rate-based model and the proposed gradient-based model. Sensitivity analysis of the model constants and grid resolution was also studied and compared with detailed DNS data. The results highlight the importance of mixing models to correctly handle turbulence/chemistry interactions in supersonic combustion and clearly indicate the proposed model can correctly estimate the subgrid mixing timescale at coarse grids and decline rapidly as it tends to DNS limit.
