LHC constraints and potential on resonant monotop production

We discuss the phenomenology associated with a resonant monotop collider signal, i.e. a signal in which a single top quark is resonantly produced in association with missing energy through an s-channel scalar exchange. We study both the bounds originating from dedicated monotop searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, and the constraints associated with other processes that could be induced by a new physics context favouring monotop production at colliders. The latter class of constraints includes, in particular, the recasting of analyses from the LHC and the TeVatron. All theoretical calculations are performed at the next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD, and we finally combine all results to establish the present limits on the parameter space and test the relevance of the monotop signal at the LHC Run 2.

Theoretical analysis of double parton scatterings in quarkonium production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

The production process of quarkonia in proton-proton (pp) collision is a very good probe of the parton structure of the proton. Recent experimental data of the production of J/psi+vector boson or quarkonium pairs at the LHC and Tevatron suggest the relevance of double parton scatterings (DPS). We discuss here the single parton scattering (SPS) contribution to the J/psi +Z, J/psi +W, and J/psi +J/psi productions in hadron collisions. By revisiting the computations of the SPS contributions to the J/psi+Z and J/psi +W productions, we demonstrate that the ATLAS data in fact show evidence for DPS.

Gluon Shadowing in Heavy-Flavor Production at the LHC

We study the relevance of experimental data on heavy-flavor [$D^0$, $J/ψ$, $B\rightarrow J/ψ$ and $Υ(1S)$ mesons] production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC to improve our knowledge of the gluon-momentum distribution inside heavy nuclei. We observe that the nuclear effects encoded in both most recent global fits of nuclear parton densities at next-to-leading order (nCTEQ15 and EPPS16) provide a good overall description of the LHC data. We interpret this as a hint that these are the dominant ones. In turn, we perform a Bayesian-reweighting analysis for each particle data sample which shows that each of the existing heavy-quark(onium) data set clearly points --with a minimal statistical significance of 7 $σ$-- to a shadowed gluon distribution at small $x$ in the lead. Moreover, our analysis corroborates the existence of gluon antishadowing. Overall, the inclusion of such heavy-flavor data in a global fit would significantly reduce the uncertainty on the gluon density down to $x\simeq 7\times 10^{-6}$ --where no other data exist-- while keeping an agreement with the other data of the global fits. Our study accounts for the factorization-scale uncertainties which dominate for the charm(onium) sector.

Indication for Double Parton Scatterings in W + Prompt J/Psi Production at the LHC

We re-analyse the associated production of a prompt J/psi and a W boson in pp collisions at the LHC following the results of the ATLAS Collaboration. We perform the first study of the Single-Parton-Scattering (SPS) contributions at the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in alpha_s in the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM), an approach based on the quark-hadron-duality. Our study provides clear indications for Double-Parton-Scattering (DPS) contributions, in particular at low transverse momenta, since our SPS CEM evaluation, which can be viewed as a conservative upper limit of the SPS yields, falls short compared to the ATLAS experimental data by 3.1 standard deviations. We also determine a finite allowed region for sigma_eff, inversely proportional to the size of the DPS yields, corresponding to the otherwise opposed hypotheses, namely our NLO CEM evaluation and the LO direct Colour-Singlet (CS) Model contribution. In both cases, the resulting DPS yields are significantly larger than that initially assumed by ATLAS based on jet-related analyses but is consistent with their observed raw-yield azimuthal distribution and with their prompt J/psi+J/psi and Z + prompt J/psi data.

$η_c'$ Hadroproduction at Next-to-Leading Order and its Relevance to $ψ'$ Production

We proceed to the first study of $η_c'$ prompt hadroproduction at next-to-leading order in $α_s$. Based on heavy-quark-spin symmetry, which is systematically used in quarkonium-production phenomenology, we demonstrate that prompt $η_c'$ can be studied at the LHC with the existing data. We emphasize its relevance to constrain $ψ'$ production, in the same way as the first prompt $η_c'$ data at the LHC lately strongly impacted the phenomenology of $J/ψ$ studies.

Probing vector-like quark models with Higgs-boson pair production

We investigate Higgs-boson pair production at the LHC when the final state system arises from decays of vector-like quarks coupling to the Higgs boson and the Standard Model quarks. Our phenomenological study includes next-to-leading-order QCD corrections, which are important to guarantee accurate predictions, and focuses on a detailed analysis of a di-Higgs signal in the four $b$-jet channel. Whereas existing Run II CMS and ATLAS analyses are not specifically designed for probing non-resonant, vector-like-quark induced, di-Higgs production, we show that they nevertheless offer some potential for these modes. We then investigate the possibility of distinguishing between the various di-Higgs production mechanisms by exploiting the kinematic properties of the signal.

NLO predictions for the production of a spin-two particle at the LHC

We obtain predictions accurate at the next-to-leading order in QCD for the production of a generic spin-two particle in the most relevant channels at the LHC: production in association with coloured particles (inclusive, one jet, two jets and $t\bar t$), with vector bosons ($Z,W^\pm,γ$) and with the Higgs boson. We present total and differential cross sections as well as branching ratios as a function of the mass and the collision energy also considering the case of non-universal couplings to standard model particles. We find that the next-to-leading order corrections give rise to sizeable $K$ factors for many channels, in some cases exposing the unitarity-violating behaviour of non-universal couplings scenarios, and in general greatly reduce the theoretical uncertainties. Our predictions are publicly available in the MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO framework and can, therefore, be directly used in experimental simulations of spin-two particle production for arbitrary values of the mass and couplings.

Colored Particle Production in New Physics at NLO QCD and Its Matching to Parton Showers

In this talk, I show the automated Monte Carlo simulations at next-to-leading order in QCD as well as its matching to parton showers are already feasible within the framework of \MG5aMC. I briefly overview the recent activities and take the colored particle production at the LHC as examples. The tools and the models are ready for using by both phenomenologists and experimentalists.

The complete NLO corrections to dijet hadroproduction

We study the production of jets in hadronic collisions, by computing all contributions proportional to $α_S^nα^m$, with $n+m=2$ and $n+m=3$. These correspond to leading and next-to-leading order results, respectively, for single-inclusive and dijet observables in a perturbative expansion that includes both QCD and electroweak effects. We discuss issues relevant to the definition of hadronic jets in the context of electroweak corrections, and present sample phenomenological predictions for the 13-TeV LHC. We find that both the leading and next-to-leading order contributions largely respect the relative hierarchy established by the respective coupling-constant combinations.

QCD next-to-leading-order predictions matched to parton showers for vector-like quark models

Vector-like quarks are featured by a wealth of beyond the Standard Model theories and are consequently an important goal of many LHC searches for new physics. Those searches, as well as most related phenomenological studies, however rely on predictions evaluated at the leading-order accuracy in QCD and consider well-defined simplified benchmark scenarios. Adopting an effective bottom-up approach, we compute next-to-leading-order predictions for vector-like-quark pair-production and single production in association with jets, with a weak or with a Higgs boson in a general new physics setup. We additionally compute vector-like-quark contributions to the production of a pair of Standard Model bosons at the same level of accuracy. For all processes under consideration, we focus both on total cross sections and on differential distributions, most these calculations being performed for the first time in our field. As a result, our work paves the way to precise extraction of experimental limits on vector-like quarks thanks to an accurate control of the shapes of the relevant observables and emphasize the extra handles that could be provided by novel vector-like-quark probes never envisaged so far

Phenomenological analysis of associated production of $Z^0+b$ in the $b \rightarrow J/ψX$ decay channel at the LHC

The ATLAS collaboration recently reported on the first observation of associated-production of a $Z^0$ boson with a $J/ψ$. We recently claimed that the corresponding yield of the {\it prompt} $J/ψ$ was dominated by double parton scatterings in the ATLAS acceptance with a somewhat small value of $σ_{\rm eff}$. We also found out that single parton scatterings were only dominant at large transverse momenta. We present here the first phenomenological analysis of another part of the ATLAS data sample, namely of a $Z^0$ boson plus a {\it non-prompt} $J/ψ$. Our study is performed at next-to-leading order in $α_s$ and includes parton-shower effects via the {\sc\small MadGraph5_aMC@NLO} framework. We find out that the data, unlike the case of prompt $J/ψ+Z^0$, do not hint at significant DPS contributions. Owing to the current experimental and theoretical uncertainties, there is still a room for these but with a lower limit of $σ_{\rm eff}$ close to 5 mb. We stress the importance of QCD corrections to account for the ATLAS data.

J/psi+Z production at the LHC

We briefly review recent results which we have obtained in the study of J/psi+Z production at the LHC. Considering our NLO computation in the Colour Evaporation Model (CEM) as an upper theory limit for the single-parton-scattering contributions, we claim that the existing data set from ATLAS points at a dominant double-parton-scattering contribution with an effective cross section smaller than that for jet-related observables. As a side product of our analysis, we have computed, for the first time, the one-loop QCD corrections to the J/psi P_T-differential cross section in the CEM.

Di-J/psi production at the Tevatron and the LHC

We briefly review recent results which we have obtained in the study of J/psi-pair production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We claim that the existing data set from CMS and D0 point at a significant double-parton-scattering contribution with an effective cross section smaller than that for jet-related observables. We have also derived simple relations involving feed-down fractions from excited states which can help in disentangling the single from the double scatterings.

Towards an automated tool to evaluate the impact of the nuclear modification of the gluon density on quarkonium, D and B meson production in proton-nucleus collisions

We propose a simple and model-independent procedure to account for the impact of the nuclear modification of the gluon density as encoded in nuclear collinear PDF sets on two-to-two partonic hard processes in proton-nucleus collisions. This applies to a good approximation to quarkonium, D and B meson production, generically referred to H. Our procedure consists in parametrising the square of the parton scattering amplitude, A_{gg -> H X} and constraining it from the proton-proton data. Doing so, we have been able to compute the corresponding nuclear modification factors for J/psi, Upsilon and D^0 as a function of y and P_T at sqrt(s_NN)=5 and 8 TeV in the kinematics of the various LHC experiments in a model independent way. It is of course justified since the most important ingredient in such evaluations is the probability of each kinematical configuration. Our computations for D mesons can also be extended to B meson production. To further illustrate the potentiality of the tool, we provide --for the first time-- predictions for the nuclear modification factor for eta_c production in pPb collisions at the LHC.

Associated production of a quarkonium and a Z boson at one loop in a quark-hadron-duality approach

In view of the large discrepancy about the associated production of a prompt $J/ψ$ and a $Z$ boson between the ATLAS data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and theoretical predictions for Single Parton Scattering (SPS) contributions, we perform an evaluation of the corresponding cross section at one loop accuracy (Next-to-Leading Order, NLO) in a quark-hadron-duality approach, also known as the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM). This work is motivated by (i) the extremely disparate predictions based on the existing NRQCD fits conjugated with the absence of a full NLO NRQCD computation and (ii) the fact that we believe that such an evaluation provides a likely upper limit of the SPS cross section. In addition to these theory improvements, we argue that the ATLAS estimation of the Double Parton Scattering (DPS) yield may be underestimated by a factor as large as 3 which then reduces the size of the SPS yield extracted from the ATLAS data. Our NLO SPS evaluation also allows us to set an upper limit on $σ_{\rm eff}$ driving the size of the DPS yield. Overall, the discrepancy between theory and experiment may be smaller than expected, which calls for further analyses by ATLAS and CMS, for which we provide predictions, and for full NLO computations in other models. As an interesting side product of our analysis, we have performed the first NLO computation of $dσ/ dP_T$ for prompt single-$J/ψ$ production in the CEM from which we have fit the CEM non-pertubative parameter at NLO using the most recent ATLAS data.

Complete Study of Hadroproduction of a $Υ$ Meson Associated with a Prompt $J/ψ$

We present the first complete study of $Υ$ and prompt $J/ψ$ production from single-parton scattering, including the complete $\mathcal{O}(α_S^6)$ color-singlet contribution, the $\mathcal{O}(α_S^2α^2)$ electroweak contribution, the complete nonrelativistic S-wave and P-wave color-octet contribution as well as the feeddown contribution. Our study was motivated by the recent evidence reported by D0 Collaboration of prompt $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ simultaneous production at the Tevatron. With our complete evaluation, we are able to refine the determination of the double parton scattering contribution made by D0 Collaboration. We find that the effective cross section characterizing the importance of double-parton scatterings is $σ_{\rm eff}\le 8.2$ mb at $68\%$ confidence level from the D0 measurement.

Matching next-to-leading order predictions to parton showers in supersymmetric QCD

We present a fully automated framework based on the FeynRules and MadGraph5 aMC@NLO programs that allows for accurate simulations of supersymmetric QCD processes at the LHC. Starting directly from a model Lagrangian that features squark and gluino interactions, event generation is achieved at the next-to-leading order in QCD, matching short-distance events to parton showers and including the subsequent decay of the produced supersymmetric particles. As an application, we study the impact of higher-order corrections in gluino pair-production in a simplified benchmark scenario inspired by current gluino LHC searches.

J/psi-Pair Production at Large Momenta: Indications for Double-Parton Scatterings and Large alpha_s^5 Contributions

We demonstrate that the recent studies of J/psi-pair production by CMS at the LHC and by D0 at the Tevatron reveal the presence of different production mechanisms in different kinematical regions. We find out that next-to-leading-order single parton scattering contributions at alpha_s^5 dominate the yield at large transverse momenta of the pair. Our analysis further emphasises the importance of double parton scatterings --which are expected to dominate the yield at large J/psi-rapidity differences-- at large invariant masses of the pair in the CMS acceptance, and thereby solve a large discrepancy between the theory and the CMS data. In addition, we provide the first exact --gauge-invariant and infrared-safe-- evaluation of a class of leading-P_T (P_T^-4) next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions at alpha_s^6, which can be relevant in the region of large values of P_T,min=min(P_T1,P_T2). Finally, we derive simple relations for the feed-down fractions from the production of an excited charmonium state with a J/psi in the case of the dominance of the double parton scatterings, which significantly deviate from those for single parton scatterings. Such relations can be used to discriminate these extreme scenari, either DPS or SPS dominance.
