First reduced model for integrated computations of helicon wave heating and current drive in magnetic fusion plasmas

Fast predictive modelling of radio-frequency heating and current drive is important for integrated tokamak scenario design, yet kinetic calculations of helicon-wave absorption remain too computationally expensive for large-scale parameter scans. We present a reduced model for helicon-wave heating and current drive that retains the dominant parallel electron Landau-damping channel. The wave response is evaluated on the cold-plasma dispersion root, and a single-Landau-pole correction is introduced to obtain compact expressions for the local damping rate and current-drive efficiency. The model is benchmarked against the Chiu-Chan heating model using approximately 1.6 million samples covering representative conditions of EAST, HL-3, DIII-D and KSTAR. The reduction error is found to be governed primarily by the electron Landau parameter and electron beta. Within an identified sub-lower-hybrid-frequency validity window, results from different devices collapse onto a common error curve, which enables an empirical correction that is further tested using ITER-like and BEST-like extrapolation cases. Near and above the lower-hybrid frequency, the agreement deteriorates rapidly owing to changes in the cold-dispersion root structure and the breakdown of the single-branch WKB description. When coupled to a reduced current-drive source, the corrected heating model gives a median deviation of 10.8 percent from the Landau-channel Ehst-Karney reference and reproduces published CFETR current-density profiles. The resulting model provides a computationally efficient reduced closure for helicon-wave heating and current-drive calculations, together with physically interpretable limits on its range of validity.

Proton-Boron Fusion Yield Increased by Orders of Magnitude with Foam Targets

A novel intense beam-driven scheme for high yield of the tri-alpha reaction 11B(p,α)2α was investigated. We used a foam target made of cellulose triacetate (TAC, C_9H_{16}O_8) doped with boron. It was then heated volumetrically by soft X-ray radiation from a laser heated hohlraum and turned into a homogenous, and long living plasma. We employed a picosecond laser pulse to generate a high-intensity energetic proton beam via the well-known Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) mechanism. We observed up to 10^{10}/sr α particles per laser shot. This constitutes presently the highest yield value normalized to the laser energy on target. The measured fusion yield per proton exceeds the classical expectation of beam-target reactions by up to four orders of magnitude under high proton intensities. This enhancement is attributed to the strong electric fields and nonequilibrium thermonuclear fusion reactions as a result of the new method. Our approach shows opportunities to pursue ignition of aneutronic fusion.

Global Theory to Understand Toroidal Drift Waves in Steep Gradient

Toroidal drift waves with unconventional mode structures and non-ground eigenstates, which differ from typical ballooning structure mode, are found to be important recently by large scale global gyrokinetic simulations and especially become dominant at strong gradient edge plasmas [cf., Xie and Xiao, Phys. Plasmas, 22, 090703 (2015)]. The global stability and mode structures of drift wave in this steep edge density and temperature gradients are examined by both direct numerical solutions of a model two-dimensional eigen equation and analytical theory employing WKB-ballooning approach. Theory agrees with numerical solutions quite well. Our results indicate that (i) non-ground eigenstates and unconventional mode structures generally exist and can be roughly described by two parameters `quantum number' $l$ and ballooning angle $\vartheta_k$, (ii) local model can overestimate the growth rate largely, say, $>50\%$, and (iii) the narrow steep equilibrium profile leads to twisting (triangle-like) radial mode structures. With velocity space integral, semi-local theory predicts that the critical jump gradient of the most unstable ion temperature gradient mode from ground state $l=0$ to non-ground state $l=1$ is $L_T^{-1}R\sim50$. These features can have important consequences to turbulent transport.
