CSF: Fixed-outline Floorplanning Based on the Conjugate Subgradient Algorithm Assisted by Q-Learning

The state-of-the-art researches indicate that analytic algorithms are promising in handling complex floorplanning scenarios. However, it is challenging to generate compact floorplans with excellent wirelength optimization effect due to the local convergence of gradient-based optimization algorithms designed for constructed smooth optimization models. Accordingly, we propose to construct a nonsmooth analytic floorplanning model addressed by the conjugate subgradient algorithm (CSA), which is accelerated by a population-based scheme adaptively regulating the stepsize with the assistance of Q-learning. In this way, the proposed CSA assisted by Q-learning (CSAQ) can strike a good balance on exploration and exploitation. Experimental results on the MCNC and GSRC benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed fixed-outline floorplanning algorithm based on CSAQ (CSF) not only address global floorplanning effectively, but also get legal floorplans more efficiently than the constraint graph-based legalization algorithm as well as its improved variants. It is also demonstrated that the CSF is competitive to the state-of-the-art algorithms on floorplanning scenarios only containing hard modules.

Floorplanning of VLSI by Mixed-Variable Optimization

By formulating the floorplanning of VLSI as a mixed-variable optimization problem, this paper proposes to solve it by memetic algorithms, where the discrete orientation variables are addressed by the distribution evolutionary algorithm based on a population of probability model (DEA-PPM), and the continuous coordination variables are optimized by the conjugate sub-gradient algorithm (CSA). Accordingly, the fixed-outline floorplanning algorithm based on CSA and DEA-PPM (FFA-CD) and the floorplanning algorithm with golden section strategy (FA-GSS) are proposed for the floorplanning problems with and without fixed-outline constraint. %FF-CD is committed to optimizing wirelength targets within a fixed profile. FA-GSS uses the Golden Section strategy to optimize both wirelength and area targets. The CSA is used to solve the proposed non-smooth optimization model, and the DEA-PPM is used to explore the module rotation scheme to enhance the flexibility of the algorithm. Numerical experiments on GSRC test circuits show that the proposed algorithms are superior to some celebrated B*-tree based floorplanning algorithms, and are expected to be applied to large-scale floorplanning problems due to their low time complexity.

A Distribution Evolutionary Algorithm for the Graph Coloring Problem

Graph coloring is a challenging combinatorial optimization problem with a wide range of applications. In this paper, a distribution evolutionary algorithm based on a population of probability model (DEA-PPM) is developed to address it efficiently. Unlike existing estimation of distribution algorithms where a probability model is updated by generated solutions, DEA-PPM employs a distribution population based on a novel probability model, and an orthogonal exploration strategy is introduced to search the distribution space with the assistance of an refinement strategy. By sampling the distribution population, efficient search in the solution space is realized based on a tabu search process. Meanwhile, DEA-PPM introduces an iterative vertex removal strategy to improve the efficiency of $k$-coloring, and an inherited initialization strategy is implemented to address the chromatic problem well. The cooperative evolution of the distribution population and the solution population leads to a good balance between exploration and exploitation. Numerical results demonstrate that the DEA-PPM of small population size is competitive to the state-of-the-art metaheuristics.utes to its competitiveness to the state-of-the-art metaheuristics.
