Gaussian densities and stability for some Ricci solitons

In this announcement, we exhibit the second variation of Perelman's $λ$ and $ν$ functionals for the Ricci flow, and investigate the linear stability of examples. We also define the "central density" of a shrinking Ricci soliton and compute its values for certain examples in dimension 4. Using these tools, one can sometimes predict or limit the formation of singularities in the Ricci flow. In particular, we show that certain Einstein manifolds are unstable for the Ricci flow in the sense that generic perturbations acquire higher entropy and thus can never return near the original metric.

On dimension reduction in the Kähler-Ricci flow

We consider dimension reduction for solutions of the Kähler-Ricci flow with nonegative bisectional curvature. When the complex dimension $n=2$, we prove an optimal dimension reduction theorem for complete translating Kähler-Ricci solitons with nonnegative bisectional curvature. We also prove a general dimension reduction theorem for complete ancient solutions of the Kähler-Ricci flow with nonnegative bisectional curvature on noncompact complex manifolds under a finiteness assumption on the Chern number $c^n_1$.

Ricci flow on compact Kähler manifolds of positive bisectional curvature

We announce a new proof of the uniform estimate on the curvature of solutions to the Ricci flow on a compact Kähler manifold $M^n$ with positive bisectional curvature. In contrast to the recent work of X. Chen and G. Tian, our proof of the uniform estimate does not rely on the exsitence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on $M^n$, but instead on the first author's Harnack inequality for the Kähler-Ricc flow, and a very recent local injectivity radius estimate of Perelman for the Ricci flow.

DGBV Algebras and Mirror Symmetry

We describe some recent development on the theory of formal Frobenius manifolds via a construction from differential Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisk (DGBV) algebras and formulate a version of mirror symmetry conjecture: the extended deformation problems of the complex structure and the Poisson structure are described by two DGBV algebras; mirror symmetry is interpreted in term of the invariance of the formal Frobenius manifold structures under quasi-isomorphism.

On quasi-isomorphic DGBV algebras

One of the methods to obtain Frobenius manifold structures is via DGBV (differential Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky) algebra construction. An important problem is how to identify Frobenius manifold structures constructed from two different DGBV algebras. For DGBV algebras with suitable conditions, we show the functorial property of a construction of deformations of the multiplicative structures of their cohomology. In particular, we show that quasi-isomorphic DGBV algebras yield identifiable Frobenius manifold structures.

Formal Frobenius manifold structure on equivariant cohomology

For a closed Kähler manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a connected compact Lie group by holomorphic isometries, we construct a formal Frobenius manifold structure on the equivariant cohomology by exploiting a natural DGBV algebra structure on the Cartan model.

Degenerate Chern-Weil Theory and Equivariant Cohomology

We develop a Chern-Weil theory for compact Lie group action whose generic stabilizers are finite in the framework of equivariant cohomology. This provides a method of changing an equivariant closed form within its cohomological class to a form more suitable to yield localization results. This work is motivated by our work on reproving wall crossing formulas in Seiberg-Witten theory, where the Lie group is the circle. As applications, we derive two localization formulas of Kalkman type for G = SU(2) or SO(3)-actions on compact manifolds with boundary. One of the formulas is then used to yield a very simple proof of a localization formula due to Jeffrey-Kirwan in the case of G = SU(2) or SO(3).

Gradient Kähler-Ricci Solitons and Periodic Orbits

We study Hamiltonian dynamics of gradient Kaehler-Ricci solitons that arise as limits of dilations of singularities of the Ricci flow on compact Kaehler manifolds. Our main result is that the underlying spaces of such gradient solitons must be Stein manifolds. Moreover, on all most all energy surfaces of the potential function f of such a soliton, the Hamiltonian vector field V_f of f, with respect to the Kaehler form of the gradient soliton metric, admits a periodic orbit. The latter should be impotant in the study of singularities of the Ricci flow on compact Kaehler manifolds in light of the ``little loop lemma'' principle due to the second author.

On Quantum de Rham Cohomology

We define quantum exterior product wedge_h and quantum exterior differential d_h on Poisson manifolds, of which symplectic manifolds are an important class of examples. Quantum de Rham cohomology is defined as the cohomology of d_h. We also define quantum Dolbeault cohomology. Quantum hard Lefschetz theorem is proved. We also define a version of quantum integral, and prove the quantum Stokes theorem. By the trick of replacing d by d_h and wedge by wedge_h in the usual definitions, we define many quantum analogues of important objects in differential geometry, e.g. quantum curvature. The quantum characteristic classes are then studied along the lines of classical Chern-Weil theory, i.e., they can be represented by expressions of quantum curvature. Quantum equivariant de Rham cohomology is defined in a similar fashion. Calculations are done for some examples, which show that quantum de Rham cohomology is different from the quantum cohomology defined using pseudo-holomorphic curves.

Identification of Two Frobenius Manifolds In Mirror Symmetry

We identify two Frobenius manifolds obtained from two different differential Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras on a compact Kaehler manifold. One is constructed on the Dolbeault cohomology, and the other on the de Rham cohomology. Our result can be considered as a generalization of the identification of the Dolbeault cohomology ring with the complexified de Rham cohomology ring on a Kaehler manifold.

On Quantum de Rham Cohomology Theory

We define quantum exterior product wedge_h and quantum exterior differential d_h on Poisson manifolds (of which symplectic manifolds are an important class of examples). Quantum de Rham cohomology, which is a deformation quantization of de Rham cohomology, is defined as the cohomology of d_h. We also define quantum Dolbeault cohomology. A version of quantum integral on symplectic manifolds is considered and the correspoding quantum Stokes theorem is proved. We also derive quantum hard Lefschetz theorem. By replacing d by d_h and wedge by wedge_h in the usual definitions, we define many quantum analogues of important objects in differential geometry, e.g. quantum curvature. The quantum characteristic classes are then studied along the lines of classical Chern-Weil theory. Quantum equivariant de Rham cohomology is defined in the similar fashion.

A Bernstein theorem for complete spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Minkowski space

We obtain a gradient estimate for the Gauss maps from complete spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Minkowski space into the hyperbolic space. As applications, we prove a Bernstein theorem which says that if the image of the Gauss map is bounded from one side, then the spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurface must be linear. This result extends the previous theorems obtained by B. Palmer and Y.L. Xin where they assume that the image of the Gauss map is bounded. We also proved a Bernstein theorem for spacelike complete surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in four-dimensional spaces.

The structure of stable minimal hypersurfaces in R^n

We provide a new topological obstruction for complete stable minimal hypersurfaces in R^n. For $n\geq 4$, we prove that any complete orientable stable hypersurfaces in R^n has only one end. This follows from a more general analytic theorem we prove in the paper.
