Multi-Modal Controlled Coherent Motion Generation

It is natural for humans to walk and talk simultaneously. This paper tackles the challenge of replicating such natural behaviors in 3D avatar motion generation driven by concurrent multimodal inputs, such as a text description of a man walking alongside speech audio. Existing methods, constrained by the scarcity of aligned multimodal data, typically combine motions from individual modalities sequentially or through weighted sums. However, they often result in mismatched or unrealistic movements. To overcome these limitations, we propose MOCO, a novel diffusion-based framework capable of processing multiple simultaneous inputs, including speech audio, text descriptions, and trajectory data, to generate coherent and lifelike motions without requiring aligned multimodal data. Our key innovation lies in decoupling the motion generation process. During each denoising step, the diffusion model independently generates motions for each modality from the input noise and assembles the body parts according to predefined spatial rules. The resulting combined motion is then diffused and serves as the input noise for the subsequent denoising step. This iterative approach enables each modality to refine its contribution within the context of the overall motion, progressively harmonizing movements across modalities. Consequently, the generated motions become increasingly natural and fluid with each iteration, achieving coherent and synchronized behaviors. We evaluate our approach using a purpose-built multimodal benchmark. Experimental results demonstrate that MOCO outperforms existing baselines, advancing the field of multimodal motion generation for 3D avatars.

Reconstruction-Anchored Diffusion Model for Text-to-Motion Generation

Diffusion models have seen widespread adoption for text-driven human motion generation and related tasks due to their impressive generative capabilities and flexibility. However, current motion diffusion models face two major limitations: a representational gap caused by pre-trained text encoders that lack motion-specific information, and error propagation during the iterative denoising process. This paper introduces Reconstruction-Anchored Diffusion Model (RAM) to address these challenges. First, RAM leverages a motion latent space as intermediate supervision for text-to-motion generation. To this end, RAM co-trains a motion reconstruction branch with two key objective functions: self-regularization to enhance the discrimination of the motion space and motion-centric latent alignment to enable accurate mapping from text to the motion latent space. Second, we propose Reconstructive Error Guidance (REG), a testing-stage guidance mechanism that exploits the motion diffusion model's inherent self-correction ability to mitigate error propagation. At each denoising step, REG uses the motion reconstruction branch to reconstruct the previous estimate, reproducing the prior error patterns. By amplifying the residual between the current prediction and the reconstructed estimate, REG highlights the improvements in the current prediction. Extensive experiments demonstrate that RAM achieves significant improvements and state-of-the-art performance. Our code will be released.

Towards Variable and Coordinated Holistic Co-Speech Motion Generation

This paper addresses the problem of generating lifelike holistic co-speech motions for 3D avatars, focusing on two key aspects: variability and coordination. Variability allows the avatar to exhibit a wide range of motions even with similar speech content, while coordination ensures a harmonious alignment among facial expressions, hand gestures, and body poses. We aim to achieve both with ProbTalk, a unified probabilistic framework designed to jointly model facial, hand, and body movements in speech. ProbTalk builds on the variational autoencoder (VAE) architecture and incorporates three core designs. First, we introduce product quantization (PQ) to the VAE, which enriches the representation of complex holistic motion. Second, we devise a novel non-autoregressive model that embeds 2D positional encoding into the product-quantized representation, thereby preserving essential structure information of the PQ codes. Last, we employ a secondary stage to refine the preliminary prediction, further sharpening the high-frequency details. Coupling these three designs enables ProbTalk to generate natural and diverse holistic co-speech motions, outperforming several state-of-the-art methods in qualitative and quantitative evaluations, particularly in terms of realism. Our code and model will be released for research purposes at https://feifeifeiliu.github.io/probtalk/.

Power-Traffic Coordinated Operation for Bi-Peak Shaving and Bi-Ramp Smoothing -A Hierarchical Data-Driven Approach

With the rapid adoption of distributed photovoltaics (PVs) in certain regions, issues such as lower net load valley during the day and more steep ramping of the demand after sunset start to challenge normal operations at utility companies. Urban transportation systems also have high peak congestion periods and steep ramping because of traffic patterns. We propose using the emerging electric vehicles (EVs) and the charing/discharging stations (CDSs) to coordinate the operation between power distribution system (PDS) and the urban transportation system (UTS), therefore, the operation challenges in each system can be mitigated by utilizing the flexibility of the other system. We conducted the simulation and numerical analysis using the IEEE 8,500-bus for the PDS and the Sioux Falls system with about 10,000 cars for the UTS. Two systems are simulated jointly to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Chance-Constrained Day-Ahead Hourly Scheduling in Distribution System Operation

This paper aims to propose a two-step approach for day-ahead hourly scheduling in a distribution system operation, which contains two operation costs, the operation cost at substation level and feeder level. In the first step, the objective is to minimize the electric power purchase from the day-ahead market with the stochastic optimization. The historical data of day-ahead hourly electric power consumption is used to provide the forecast results with the forecasting error, which is presented by a chance constraint and formulated into a deterministic form by Gaussian mixture model (GMM). In the second step, the objective is to minimize the system loss. Considering the nonconvexity of the three-phase balanced AC optimal power flow problem in distribution systems, the second-order cone program (SOCP) is used to relax the problem. Then, a distributed optimization approach is built based on the alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM). The results shows that the validity and effectiveness method.

Load Forecasting Based Distribution System Network Reconfiguration-A Distributed Data-Driven Approach

In this paper, a short-term load forecasting approach based network reconfiguration is proposed in a parallel manner. Specifically, a support vector regression (SVR) based short-term load forecasting approach is designed to provide an accurate load prediction and benefit the network reconfiguration. Because of the nonconvexity of the three-phase balanced optimal power flow, a second-order cone program (SOCP) based approach is used to relax the optimal power flow problem. Then, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is used to compute the optimal power flow in distributed manner. Considering the limited number of the switches and the increasing computation capability, the proposed network reconfiguration is solved in a parallel way. The numerical results demonstrate the feasible and effectiveness of the proposed approach.
