Antiferromagnetic transitions of Dirac fermions in three dimensions

We use determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations to study the role of electron-electron interactions on three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermions based on the $π$-flux model on a cubic lattice. We show that the Hubbard interaction drives the 3D Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator only above a finite critical interaction strength and the long-ranged AF order persists up to a finite temperature. We evaluate the critical interaction strength and temperatures using finite-size scaling of the spin structure factor. The critical behaviors are consistent with the (3+1)d Gross-Neveu universality class for the quantum critical point and 3D Heisenberg universality class for the thermal phase transitions. We further investigate correlation effects in birefringent Dirac fermion system. It is found that the critical interaction strength $U_c$ is decreased by reducing the velocity of the Dirac cone, quantifying the effect of velocity on the critical interaction strength in 3D Dirac fermion systems. Our findings unambiguously uncover correlation effects in 3D Dirac fermions, and may be observed using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice.

Quantum magnetism of topologically-designed graphene nanoribbons

Based on the Hubbard models, quantum magnetism of topologically-designed graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) is studied using exact numerical simulations. We first study a two-band Hubbard model describing the low-energy topological bands using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) methods. It is found the spin correlations decay quickly with the distance, and the local moment is extrapolated to zero in the presence of symmetry-breaking terms. The results show that the two-band Hubbard chain is nonmagnetic, which is in contrast to the mean-field calculation predicting a critical interaction for the magnetic transition. We then include the Hubbard interaction to the topological-designed GNRs. For large interactions, the spin correlations keep finite for all distances, and the magnetic order develops. The local moment is extrapolated to almost zero for weak interactions, and begins to increase rapidly from a critical interaction. The estimated critical value is much larger than the realistic value in graphene, and we conclude the experimentally relevant GNRs is nonmagnetic, which is consistent with the experimental results.

Charge-Density Wave Order on a $π$-flux Square Lattice

The effect of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) on Dirac fermions has recently been explored numerically on a honeycomb lattice, leading to precise quantitative values for the finite temperature and quantum critical points. In this paper, we use the unbiased determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method to study the Holstein model on a half-filled staggered-flux square lattice, and compare with the honeycomb lattice geometry, presenting results for a range of phonon frequencies $0.1 \leqslant ω\leqslant 2.0$. We find that the interactions give rise to charge-density wave (CDW) order, but only above a finite coupling strength $λ_{\rm crit}$. The transition temperature is evaluated and presented in a $T_c$-$λ$ phase diagram. An accompanying mean-field theory (MFT) calculation also predicts the existence of quantum phase transition (QPT), but at a substantially smaller coupling strength.

Hardcore bosonic domain walls on honeycomb lattice

Linelike hardcore bosonic domain walls in a staggered potential on honeycomb lattice are studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The phase diagrams of ribbons with zigzag and armchair domain walls are mapped, which contain superfluid and insulator phases at various fillings. In the $ρ=\frac{1}{2}$ insulator, the domain wall separates two charge-density-wave (CDW) regions with opposite Berry curvatures. Associated with the change of topological properties, superfluid transport occurs down the domain wall. The superfluid density associated with a zigzag domain wall is much larger than that of an armchair domain wall due to the different arrangements of occupied and unoccupied sites along the domain wall. Our results provide a concrete context to study bosonic topological phenomena, which may be simulated experimentally using bosonic cold atoms trapped in optical lattices.

Charge Density Waves on a Half-Filled Decorated Honeycomb Lattice

Tight binding models like the Hubbard Hamiltonian are most often explored in the context of uniform intersite hopping $t$. The electron-electron interactions, if sufficiently large compared to this translationally invariant $t$, can give rise to ordered magnetic phases and Mott insulator transitions, especially at commensurate filling. The more complex situation of non-uniform $t$ has been studied within a number of situations, perhaps most prominently in multi-band geometries where there is a natural distinction of hopping between orbitals of different degree of overlap. In this paper we explore related questions arising from the interplay of multiple kinetic energy scales and electron-phonon interactions. Specifically, we use Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) to solve the half-filled Holstein Hamiltonian on a `decorated honeycomb lattice', consisting of hexagons with internal hopping $t$ coupled together by $t^{\,\prime}$. This modulation of the hopping introduces a gap in the Dirac spectrum and affects the nature of the topological phases. We determine the range of $t/t^{\,\prime}$ values which support a charge density wave (CDW) phase about the Dirac point of uniform hopping $t=t^{\,\prime}$, as well as the critical transition temperature $T_c$. The QMC simulations are compared with the results of Mean Field Theory (MFT).

Self-Organized Bosonic Domain Walls

Hardcore bosons on honeycomb lattice ribbons with zigzag edges are studied using exact numerical simulations. We map out the phase diagrams of ribbons with different widths, which contain superfluid and insulator phases at various fillings. We show that charge domain walls are energetically favorable, in sharp contrast to the more typical occupation of a set of sites on a single sublattice of the bipartite geometry at $ρ=\frac{1}{2}$ filling. This `self-organized domain wall' separates two charge-density-wave (CDW) regions with opposite Berry curvatures. Associated with the change of topological properties, superfluid transport occurs down the domain wall. Our results provide a concrete context to observe bosonic topological phenomena and can be simulated experimentally using bosonic cold atoms trapped in designed optical lattices.

Topological bosonic states on ribbons of honeycomb lattice

The topological properties of hardcore bosons on ribbons of honeycomb lattice are studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We map out a rich phase diagram with the superfluid and insulator phases at various fillings. Particularly, it is revealed that the insulator state at half filling is a topological bosonic state, which is characterized by a nontrivial Berry phase and a pair of edge states. We provide intuitive picture to understand this topological bosonic insulator state by showing that it can be adiabatically mapped to a topological fermionic model. It is also shown that the topological edge states are robust against weak interactions beyond the hardcore repulsion. Our results can be simulated by using bosonic cold atoms trapped in designed optical lattices.

Pairing symmetry of interacting fermions on twisted bilayer graphene superlattice

The pairing symmetry of an effective Hamiltonian for interacting fermions on a twisted bilayer graphene superlattice is studied with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The model has the symmetry of a triangle lattice and a nearly-flat low energy band, features which underlie the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene superlattice. We show that the low temperature phase is insulating at half-filling, even for relatively weak interactions. The natures of the spin and pairing correlations upon doping are determined, and exhibit an electron-hole asymmetry consistent with experiment. Among the pairing symmetries allowed, we demonstrate that the dominating channels are $d$-wave, opening the possibility of condensation into an unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ phase, which is characterized by an integer topological invariant and gapless edge states.

Exotic pairing symmetry of interacting Dirac fermions on a $π$ flux lattice

The pairing symmetry of interacting Dirac fermions on the $π$-flux lattice is studied with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo and numerical linked cluster expansion methods. The extended $s^*$- (i.e. extended $s$-) and d-wave pairing symmetries, which are distinct in the conventional square lattice, are degenerate under the Landau gauge. We demonstrate that the dominant pairing channel at strong interactions is an exotic $ds^*$-wave phase consisting of alternating stripes of $s^*$- and d-wave phases. A complementary mean-field analysis shows that while the $s^*$- and d-wave symmetries individually have nodes in the energy spectrum, the $ds^*$ channel is fully gapped. The results represent a new realization of pairing in Dirac systems, connected to the problem of chiral d-wave pairing on the honeycomb lattice, which might be more readily accessed by cold-atom experiments.

Topological orbital superfluid with chiral d-wave order in a rotating optical lattice

Topological superfluid is an exotic state of quantum matter that possesses a nodeless superfluid gap in the bulk and Andreev edge modes at the boundary of a finite system. Here, we study a multi-orbital superfluid driven by attractive s-wave interaction in a rotating optical lattice. Interestingly, we find that the rotation induces the inter- orbital hybridization and drives the system into topological orbital superfluid in accordance with intrinsically chiral d-wave pairing characteristics. Thanks to the conservation of spin, the topological orbital superfluid supports four rather than two chiral Andreev edge modes at the boundary of the lattice. Moreover, we find that the intrinsic harmonic confining potential forms a circular spatial barrier which accumulates atoms and supports a mass current under injection of small angular momentum as external driving force. This feature provides an experimentally detectable phenomenon to verify the topological orbital superfluid with chiral d-wave order in a rotating optical lattice.

Can spontaneous symmetry breaking order develop in a topological phase?

Landau's symmetry breaking theory is the basis of modern condensed matter physics, from which most phases can be understood. The recent discovery of topological insulators simulates the study on the topological phase which is beyond this theory. An interesting question is whether the topological phase and spontaneous symmetry breaking order can coexist. We study this problem based on the topological phase in the Haldane model. Firstly by including a staggered potential, we show that if the system is subjected to the symmetry needed by the charge density wave (CDW) order in advance, the topological phase can coexist with the CDW order, realizing the topological CDW phase. While when the nearest neighor interaction which preserves the symmetry of the origin Hamiltonian is included, the CDW order can not develop from spontaneous symmetry breaking in the topological phase. The results imply that a spontaneous symmetry breaking order may not develop in a topological phase.

Quantum pumping induced by disorder in one dimension

The topological property in one dimension (1D) is protected by symmetry. Based on a concrete model, we show that since a 1D topological model usually contain two of the three Pauli matrix, the left one automatically become the protecting symmetry. We study the effect of disorder preserving or breaking the symmetry and show the nature of symmetry protecting in the 1D topological phase. Based on the 1D topological model, a stable quantum pumping can be constructed, which is topologically nontrivial and can be characterized by the Chern number. By calculating the instantaneous local current we show that an integer charge is pumped across a periodic chain in a cyclic process. Also on an open chain, an edge state can be transferred to the other edge by the quantum pumping. Furthermore we find that not only the quantum pumping is stable to on-site disorder, but also can be induced by it. These results may be realized experimentally using quasicrystals.

Bosonic edge states in gapped honeycomb lattices

By quantum Monte Carlo simulations of bosons in gapped honeycomb lattices, we show the existence of bosonic edge states. For single layer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge states can be controlled to appear, cross the gap and merge into bulk states by an on-site potential applied on the outmost sites of the boundary. On bilayer honeycomb lattice, bosonic edge state traversing the gap at half filling is demonstrated. The topological origin of the bosonic edge states is discussed with pseudo Berry curvature. The results will simulate experimental studies of these exotic bosonic edge states with ultracold bosons trapped in honeycomb optical lattices.

Magnetic properties of spin-1/2 Fermi gases with ferromagnetic interaction

We investigate the magnetic properties of spin-$1/2$ charged Fermi gases with ferromagnetic coupling via mean-field theory, and find the interplay among the paramagnetism, diamagnetism and ferromagnetism. Paramagnetism and diamagnetism compete with each other. When increasing the ferromagnetic coupling the spontaneous magnetization occurs in a weak magnetic field. The critical ferromagnetic coupling constant of the paramagnetic phase to ferromagnetic phase transition increases linearly with the temperature. Both the paramagnetism and diamagnetism increase when the magnetic field increases. It reveals the magnetization density $\bar M$ increases firstly as the temperature increases, and then reaches a maximum. Finally the magnetization density $\bar M$ decreases smoothly in the high temperature region. The domed shape of the magnetization density $\bar M$ variation is different from the behavior of Bose gas with ferromagnetic coupling. We also find the curve of susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law, and for a given temperature the susceptibility is directly proportional to the Landé factor.

Fractional Topological States in Quantum Spin Chains with Periodical Modulation

We report the findings of fractional topological states in one-dimensional periodically modulated quantum spin chains with up to third neighbor interactions. By exact numerical studies, we demonstrate the existence of topologically nontrivial degenerate ground states at some specific magnetizations, which can be characterized by the nonzero-integer total Chern numbers of the degenerate ground states and the emergence of nontrivial edge states under open boundary conditions. We find that the low-energy excitations obey bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional statistics for the spin-$1/2$ system and $ν=1$ non-Abelian statistics for the spin-$1$ system, respectively. The discovered fractional quantum states provide another route to the theoretical exploration of fractional quantum states in correlated spin systems.

The $π$ Berry Phase and Topological Excitation in Interacting Boson-Fermion Mixtures

The topological property of boson-fermion mixture in a one-dimensional optical superlattice is studied and the topological insulating phase of interacting boson-fermion mixture characterized by a nontrivial Berry phase is identified. The single-particle and boson-fermion exchanging excitation spectrums are calculated and we identify the boson-fermion exchanging excitation as the gapless topological excitation in the topological phase of the mixture. The different kinds of excitations are explained explicitly from the competition among the bulk gap, the on-site boson-boson and boson-fermion interactions. The Hamiltonian studied has been partly realized in the state-of-art cold atom experiments, and the results are very relevant to the experiments.

Complete phase diagram and topological properties of interacting bosons in one-dimensional superlattices

The interacting bosons in one-dimensional inversion-symmetric superlattices are investigated from the topological aspect. The complete phase diagram is obtained by an atomic-limit analysis and quantum Monte Carlo simulations and comprises three kinds of phases: superfluid, persisted charge-density-wave and Mott insulators, and emergent insulators in the presence of nearest-neighbor hoppings. We find that all emergent insulators are topological, which are characterized by the Berry phase $π$ and a pair of degenerate in-gap boundary states. The mechanism of the topological bosonic insulators is qualitatively discussed and the ones with higher fillings can be understood as a $\frac{1}{3}$-filling topological phase on a background of trivial charge-density-wave or Mott insulators.

Characterization of symmetry-protected topological phases in polymerized models by trajectories of Majorana stars

By using Majorana's stellar representation, we give a clear geometrical interpretation of the topological phases of inversion-symmetric polymerized models by mapping the Bloch states of multi-band systems to Majorana stars on the Bloch sphere. While trajectories of Majorana stars of a filled Bloch band exhibit quite different geometrical structures for topologically trivial and nontrivial phases, we further demonstrate that these structures are uniquely determined by distributions of Majorana stars of two high-symmetrical momentum states, which have different parities for topologically different states.
