Synthesizing Training Images for Boosting Human 3D Pose Estimation

Human 3D pose estimation from a single image is a challenging task with numerous applications. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have recently achieved superior performance on the task of 2D pose estimation from a single image, by training on images with 2D annotations collected by crowd sourcing. This suggests that similar success could be achieved for direct estimation of 3D poses. However, 3D poses are much harder to annotate, and the lack of suitable annotated training images hinders attempts towards end-to-end solutions. To address this issue, we opt to automatically synthesize training images with ground truth pose annotations. Our work is a systematic study along this road. We find that pose space coverage and texture diversity are the key ingredients for the effectiveness of synthetic training data. We present a fully automatic, scalable approach that samples the human pose space for guiding the synthesis procedure and extracts clothing textures from real images. Furthermore, we explore domain adaptation for bridging the gap between our synthetic training images and real testing photos. We demonstrate that CNNs trained with our synthetic images out-perform those trained with real photos on 3D pose estimation tasks.

Raman spectroscopic characterization of stacking configuration and interlayer coupling of twisted multilayer graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition

Multilayer graphene (MLG) grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising material for electronic and optoelectronic devices. Understanding the stacking configuration and interlayer coupling of MLGs is technologically relevant and of importance for the device applications. Here, we reported a kind of twisted MLGs (tMLGs), which are formed by stacking one graphene monolayer on the top of AB-stacked MLG by rotating a certain angle between them. The twist angle of tMLGs are identified by the twist-related modes, R and R'. With increasing the total layer number of N, the observed interlayer shear modes in the tMLG flake always follow those of AB-stacked (N-1)LG, while the observed interlayer breathing modes always follow those of AB-stacked NLG, independent of its twist angle. The layer breathing coupling of the tMLGs is almost identical to that of mechanically-exfoliated tMLGs, which demonstrates the high quality of MLGs grown by CVD. This study provides an applicable approach to probe the stacking configuration and interlayer coupling of MLGs grown by CVD or related methods. This work also demonstrates the possibility to grow MLG flakes with a fixed stacking configuration, $e.g.$, t(1+$n$)LG, by the CVD method.

Dielectric Properties of Composites Containing Meltextracted Co-based Microwires

We have investigated the microwave properties of epoxy-based composites containing melt-extracted Co69.25Fe4. 25B13.5-xSi13Nbx (x=0, 1, 3) microwires of various length annealed using a so-called combined current-modulation annealing (CCMA) technique. The observation of a double-peak feature in the permittivity spectra is believed due to the coexistence of the amorphous phase and a small amount of nanocrystallites on the wires with a high Nb content. CCMA was found to be favorable for a better-defined circular anisotropy of microwires and had suppressed the highfrequency peak due to residual stress relief for the composite with 25 mm long wires. Neither the shift of resonance peak nor the characteristic double peak feature was detected for composites containing as-cast 15 or 35 mm long microwires.

Global and partitioned reconstructions of undirected complex networks

It is a significant challenge to predict the network topology from a small amount of dynamical observations. Different from the usual framework of the node-based reconstruction, two optimization approaches (i.e., the global and partitioned reconstructions) are proposed to infer the structure of undirected networks from dynamics. These approaches are applied to evolutionary games occurring on both homogeneous and heterogeneous networks via compressed sensing, which can more efficiently achieve higher reconstruction accuracy with relatively small amounts of data. Our approaches provide different perspectives on effectively reconstructing complex networks.

A pathway-based network analysis of hypertension-related genes

Complex network approach has become an effective way to describe interrelationships among large amounts of biological data, which is especially useful in finding core functions and global behavior of biological systems. Hypertension is a complex disease caused by many reasons including genetic, physiological, psychological and even social factors. In this paper, based on the information of biological pathways, we construct a network model of hypertension-related genes of the salt-sensitive rat to explore the interrelationship between genes. Statistical and topological characteristics show that the network has the small-world but not scale-free property, and exhibits a modular structure, revealing compact and complex connections among these genes. By the threshold of integrated centrality larger than 0.71, seven key hub genes are found: Jun, Rps6kb1, Cycs, Creb3l2, Cdk4, Actg1 and RT1-Da. These genes should play an important role in hypertension, suggesting that the treatment of hypertension should focus on the combination of drugs on multiple genes.

A complex network analysis of hypertension-related genes

In this paper, a network of hypertension-related genes is constructed by analyzing the correlations of gene expression data among the Dahl salt-sensitive rat and two consomic rat strains. The numerical calculations show that this sparse and assortative network has small-world and scale-free properties. Further, 16 key hub genes (Col4a1, Lcn2, Cdk4, etc.) are determined by introducing an integrated centrality and have been confirmed by biological/medical research to play important roles in hypertension.

Analytical controllability of deterministic scale-free networks and Cayley trees

According to the exact controllability theory, the controllability is investigated analytically for two typical types of self-similar bipartite networks, i.e., the classic deterministic scale-free networks and Cayley trees. Due to their self-similarity, the analytical results of the exact controllability are obtained, and the minimum sets of driver nodes (drivers) are also identified by elementary transformations on adjacency matrices. For these two types of undirected networks, no matter their links are unweighted or (nonzero) weighted, the controllability of networks and the configuration of drivers remain the same, showing a robustness to the link weights. These results have implications for the control of real networked systems with self-similarity.

On the growth of von Neumann dimension of harmonic spaces of semipositive line bundles over covering manifolds

We study the harmonic space of line bundle valued forms over a covering manifold with a discrete group action $Γ$, and obtain an asymptotic estimate for the $Γ$-dimension of the harmonic space with respect to the tensor times $k$ in the holomorphic line bundle $L^{k}\otimes E$ and the type $(n,q)$ of the differential form, when $L$ is semipositive. In particular, we estimate the $Γ$-dimension of the corresponding reduced $L^2$-Dolbeault cohomology group. Essentially, we obtain a local estimate of the pointwise norm of harmonic forms with valued in semipositive line bundles over Hermitian manifolds.

Proton beams with controlled divergence and concentrated energy in TNSA regime by USUI laser pulse interaction with a tailored hole-target

An improved acceleration scheme to produce protons with controlled divergence and concentrated energy density is studied using ultrashort ultraintense (USUI) laser pulse interaction with a tailored hole-target in target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) regime. Two-dimension-in-space and three-dimension-in-velocity (2D3V) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that the tailored hole-target helps to reshape the sheath electric field and generate a transverse quasistatic electric field of $TV/m$ along the inner wall of the hole. The transverse electric field suppresses the transverse expansion of the proton beam effectively, as it tends to force the produced protons to focus inwards to the central axis, resulting in controlled divergence and concentrated energy density compared with that of a single plain target. The dependence of proton beam divergence and energy feature on depth of the hole is investigated in detail. A rough estimation of the hole depth ranges depending on $a_{0}$ of the incident laser is also given.

A Novel Approach for Clone Group Mapping by using Topic Modeling

Clone group mapping has a very important significance in the evolution of code clone. The topic modeling techniques were applied into code clone firstly and a new clone group mapping method was proposed. The method is very effective for not only Type-1 and Type-2 clone but also Type-3 clone .By making full use of the source text and structure information, topic modeling techniques transform the mapping problem of high-dimensional code space into a low-dimensional topic space, the goal of clone group mapping was indirectly reached by mapping clone group topics. Experiments on four open source software show that the recall and precision are up to 0.99, thus the method can effectively and accurately reach the goal of clone group mapping.

A Batchwise Monotone Algorithm for Dictionary Learning

We propose a batchwise monotone algorithm for dictionary learning. Unlike the state-of-the-art dictionary learning algorithms which impose sparsity constraints on a sample-by-sample basis, we instead treat the samples as a batch, and impose the sparsity constraint on the whole. The benefit of batchwise optimization is that the non-zeros can be better allocated across the samples, leading to a better approximation of the whole. To accomplish this, we propose procedures to switch non-zeros in both rows and columns in the support of the coefficient matrix to reduce the reconstruction error. We prove in the proposed support switching procedure the objective of the algorithm, i.e., the reconstruction error, decreases monotonically and converges. Furthermore, we introduce a block orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm that also operates on sample batches to provide a warm start. Experiments on both natural image patches and UCI data sets show that the proposed algorithm produces a better approximation with the same sparsity levels compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Fast Matrix Multiplication with Sketching

We present an approximate algorithm for matrix multiplication based on matrix sketching techniques. First one of the matrix is chosen and sparsified using the online matrix sketching algorithm, and then the matrix product is calculated using the sparsified matrix. We prove when the sample number grows large compared to the sample dimensions the proposed algorithm achieves similar accuracy bound with a smaller computational cost compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Fitting magnetic field gradient with Heisenberg-scaling accuracy

We propose a quantum fitting scheme to estimate the magnetic field gradient with $N$-atom spins preparing in W state, which attains the Heisenberg-scaling accuracy. Our scheme combines the quantum multi-parameter estimation and the least square linear fitting method to achieve the quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB). We show that the estimated quantity achieves the Heisenberg-scaling accuracy. In single parameter estimation with assumption that the magnetic field is strictly linear, two optimal measurements can achieve the identical Heisenberg-scaling accuracy. Proper interpretation of the super-Heisenberg-scaling accuracy is presented. The scheme of quantum metrology combined with data fitting provides a new method in fast high precision measurements.

Exact Recovery of Sparsely-Used Dictionaries

We consider the problem of learning sparsely used dictionaries with an arbitrary square dictionary and a random, sparse coefficient matrix. We prove that $O (n \log n)$ samples are sufficient to uniquely determine the coefficient matrix. Based on this proof, we design a polynomial-time algorithm, called Exact Recovery of Sparsely-Used Dictionaries (ER-SpUD), and prove that it probably recovers the dictionary and coefficient matrix when the coefficient matrix is sufficiently sparse. Simulation results show that ER-SpUD reveals the true dictionary as well as the coefficients with probability higher than many state-of-the-art algorithms.

On the Local Correctness of L^1 Minimization for Dictionary Learning

The idea that many important classes of signals can be well-represented by linear combinations of a small set of atoms selected from a given dictionary has had dramatic impact on the theory and practice of signal processing. For practical problems in which an appropriate sparsifying dictionary is not known ahead of time, a very popular and successful heuristic is to search for a dictionary that minimizes an appropriate sparsity surrogate over a given set of sample data. While this idea is appealing, the behavior of these algorithms is largely a mystery; although there is a body of empirical evidence suggesting they do learn very effective representations, there is little theory to guarantee when they will behave correctly, or when the learned dictionary can be expected to generalize. In this paper, we take a step towards such a theory. We show that under mild hypotheses, the dictionary learning problem is locally well-posed: the desired solution is indeed a local minimum of the $\ell^1$ norm. Namely, if $\mb A \in \Re^{m \times n}$ is an incoherent (and possibly overcomplete) dictionary, and the coefficients $\mb X \in \Re^{n \times p}$ follow a random sparse model, then with high probability $(\mb A,\mb X)$ is a local minimum of the $\ell^1$ norm over the manifold of factorizations $(\mb A',\mb X')$ satisfying $\mb A' \mb X' = \mb Y$, provided the number of samples $p = Ω(n^3 k)$. For overcomplete $\mb A$, this is the first result showing that the dictionary learning problem is locally solvable. Our analysis draws on tools developed for the problem of completing a low-rank matrix from a small subset of its entries, which allow us to overcome a number of technical obstacles; in particular, the absence of the restricted isometry property.

Spatial light modulation based on coherent population oscillation in semiconductor quantum dots

Due to coherent population oscillation (CPO) effect, we theoretically examine the generation and manipulation of Laguerre-Gaussian beams in terms of phase and amplitude modulation respectively in semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs). The results indicate that both phase modulation with low absorption of probe field and amplitude modulation with high efficiency can be achieved. Thus the practical way demonstrates that the SQDs system can function as effective optically addressed spatial light modulator with which the transverse spatial properties of probe fields can be artificially modulated.

Voltage-Controlled Negative Index in Vertically Coupled Quantum Dot Systems

We demonstrate that voltage-controlled negative index can be obtained in self-organized InAs quantum dot systems. As the bias voltage changes, the refractive index can be adjusted and controlled continuously from -7 to 7. Simultaneously, the absorption of light in the system will be very small. The single-negative index materials and the double-negative index materials can be achieved in different bias voltages.

Berry Phase in a Single Quantum Dot with Spin-Orbit Interaction

Berry phase in a single quantum dot with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is investigated theoretically. Berry phases as functions of magnetic field strength, dot size, spin-orbit coupling and photon-spin coupling constants are evaluated. It is shown that the Berry phase will alter dramatically from 0 to $2π$ as the magnetic field strength increases. The threshold of magnetic field depends on the dot size and the spin-orbit coupling constant.
