Multiple rogue wave solutions for the generalized (2+1)-dimensional Camassa-Holm-Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation

Based on the symbolic computation approach, multiple rogue wave solutions of the generalized (2+1)-dimensional Camassa-Holm-Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation are studied. As an example, we present the 1-rogue wave solutions, 3-rogue wave solutions and 6-rogue wave solutions. Furthermore, some dynamics features of the obtained multiple rogue wave solutions are shown by 3D, contour and density graphics.

Revealing in-plane grain boundary composition features through machine learning from atom probe tomography data

Grain boundaries (GBs) are planar lattice defects that govern the properties of many types of polycrystalline materials. Hence, their structures have been investigated in great detail. However, much less is known about their chemical features, owing to the experimental difficulties to probe these features at the atomic length scale inside bulk material specimens. Atom probe tomography (APT) is a tool capable of accomplishing this task, with an ability to quantify chemical characteristics at near-atomic scale. Using APT data sets, we present here a machine-learning-based approach for the automated quantification of chemical features of GBs. We trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) using twenty thousand synthesized images of grain interiors, GBs, or triple junctions. Such a trained CNN automatically detects the locations of GBs from APT data. Those GBs are then subjected to compositional mapping and analysis, including revealing their in-plane chemical decoration patterns. We applied this approach to experimentally obtained APT data sets pertaining to three case studies, namely, Ni-P, Pt-Au, and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys. In the first case, we extracted GB-specific segregation features as a function of misorientation and coincidence site lattice character. Secondly, we revealed interfacial excesses and in-plane chemical features that could not have been found by standard compositional analyses. Lastly, we tracked the temporal evolution of chemical decoration from early-stage solute GB segregation in the dilute limit to interfacial phase separation, characterized by the evolution of complex composition patterns. This machine-learning-based approach provides quantitative, unbiased, and automated access to GB chemical analyses, serving as an enabling tool for new discoveries related to interface thermodynamics, kinetics, and the associated chemistry-structure-property relations.

Epitaxial Thin Films of a Chalcogenide Perovskite

Chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as a new class of electronic materials, but fundamental properties and applications of chalcogenide perovskites remain limited by the lack of high quality epitaxial thin films. We report epitaxial thin film growth of BaZrS3, a prototypical chalcogenide, by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction studies show that the films are strongly textured out of plane and have a clear in-plane epitaxial relationship with the substrate. Electron microscopy studies confirm the presence of epitaxy for the first few layers of the film at the interface, even though away from the interface the films are polycrystalline with a large number of extended defects suggesting the potential for further improvement in growth. X-Ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy show smooth film surfaces and interfaces between the substrate and the film. The films show strong light absorption near the band edge and photoluminescence in the visible region. The photodetector devices show fast and efficient photo response with the highest ON/OFF ratio reported for BaZrS3 films thus far. Our study opens up opportunities to realize epitaxial thin films, heterostructures, and superlattices of chalcogenide perovskites to probe fundamental physical phenomena and the resultant electronic and photonic device technologies.

Site-Controlled Telecom Single-Photon Emitters in Atomically-thin MoTe2

Quantum emitters (QEs) in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) have advanced to the forefront of quantum communication and transduction research due to their unique potentials in accessing valley pseudo-spin degree of freedom (DOF) and facile integration into quantum-photonic, electronic and sensing platforms via the layer-by-layer-assembly approach. To date, QEs capable of operating in O-C telecommunication bands have not been demonstrated in TMDCs. Here we report a deterministic creation of such telecom QEs emitting over the 1080 to 1550 nm wavelength range via coupling of 2D molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) to strain inducing nano-pillar arrays. Our Hanbury Brown and Twiss experiment conducted at 10 K reveals clear photon antibunching with 90% single photon purity. Ultra-long lifetimes, 4-6 orders of magnitude longer than that of the 2D exciton, are also observed. Polarization analysis further reveals that while some QEs display cross-linearly polarized doublets with ~1 meV splitting resulting from the strain induced anisotropic exchange interaction, valley degeneracy is preserved in other QEs. Valley Zeeman splitting as well as restoring of valley symmetry in cross-polarized doublets are observed under 8T magnetic field. In contrast to other telecom QEs, our QEs which offer the potential to access valley DOF through single photons, could lead to unprecedented advantages in optical fiber-based quantum networks.

Search to aggregate neighborhood for graph neural network

Recent years have witnessed the popularity and success of graph neural networks (GNN) in various scenarios. To obtain data-specific GNN architectures, researchers turn to neural architecture search (NAS), which has made impressive success in discovering effective architectures in convolutional neural networks. However, it is non-trivial to apply NAS approaches to GNN due to challenges in search space design and the expensive searching cost of existing NAS methods. In this work, to obtain the data-specific GNN architectures and address the computational challenges facing by NAS approaches, we propose a framework, which tries to Search to Aggregate NEighborhood (SANE), to automatically design data-specific GNN architectures. By designing a novel and expressive search space, we propose a differentiable search algorithm, which is more efficient than previous reinforcement learning based methods. Experimental results on four tasks and seven real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of SANE compared to existing GNN models and NAS approaches in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. CALPHAD-informed phase-field modeling of grain boundary microchemistry and precipitation in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys

The grain boundary (GB) microchemistry and precipitation behaviour in high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys has an important influence on their mechanical and electrochemical properties. Simulation of the GB segregation, precipitation, and solute distribution in these alloys requires an accurate description of the thermodynamics and kinetics of this multi-component system. CALPHAD databases have been successfully developed for equilibrium thermodynamic calculations in complex multi-component systems, and in recent years have been combined with diffusion simulations. In this work, we have directly incorporated a CALPHAD database into a phase-field framework, to simulate, with high fidelity, the complex kinetics of the non-equilibrium GB microstructures that develop in these important commercial alloys during heat treatment. In particular, the influence of GB solute segregation, GB diffusion, precipitate number density, and far-field matrix composition, on the growth of a population of GB precipitates, was systematically investigated in a model Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy of near AA7050 composition. The simulation results were compared with scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography characterisation of alloys of the similar composition, with good agreement.

Side Information Fusion for Recommender Systems over Heterogeneous Information Network

Collaborative filtering (CF) has been one of the most important and popular recommendation methods, which aims at predicting users' preferences (ratings) based on their past behaviors. Recently, various types of side information beyond the explicit ratings users give to items, such as social connections among users and metadata of items, have been introduced into CF and shown to be useful for improving recommendation performance. However, previous works process different types of information separately, thus failing to capture the correlations that might exist across them. To address this problem, in this work, we study the application of heterogeneous information network (HIN) to enhance CF-based recommendation methods. However, we face challenging issues in HIN-based recommendation, i.e., how to capture similarities of complex semantics between users and items in a HIN, and how to effectively fuse these similarities to improve final recommendation performance. To address these issues, we apply metagraph to similarity computation and solve the information fusion problem with a ``matrix factorization (MF) + factorization machine (FM)'' framework. For the MF part, we obtain the user-item similarity matrix from each metagraph and then apply low-rank matrix approximation to obtain latent features for both users and items. For the FM part, we apply FM with Group lasso (FMG) on the features obtained from the MF part to train the recommending model and, at the same time, identify the useful metagraphs. Besides FMG, a two-stage method, we further propose an end-to-end method, hierarchical attention fusing (HAF), to fuse metagraph based similarities for the final recommendation. Experimental results on four large real-world datasets show that the two proposed frameworks significantly outperform existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of recommendation performance.

Social Explorative Attention based Recommendation for Content Distribution Platforms

In modern social media platforms, an effective content recommendation should benefit both creators to bring genuine benefits to them and consumers to help them get really interesting content. To address the limitations of existing methods for social recommendation, we propose Social Explorative Attention Network (SEAN), a social recommendation framework that uses a personalized content recommendation model to encourage personal interests driven recommendation. SEAN has two versions: (1) SEAN-END2END allows user's attention vector to attend their personalized interested points in the documents. (2) SEAN-KEYWORD extracts keywords from users' historical readings to capture their long-term interests. It is much faster than the first version, more suitable for practical usage, while SEAN-END2END is more effective. Both versions allow the personalization factors to attend to users' higher-order friends on the social network to improve the accuracy and diversity of recommendation results. Constructing two datasets in two languages, English and Spanish, from a popular decentralized content distribution platform, Steemit, we compare SEAN models with state-of-the-art collaborative filtering (CF) and content based recommendation approaches. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of SEAN in terms of both Gini coefficients for recommendation equality and F1 scores for recommendation accuracy.

Machine-learning-enhanced time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis

Mass spectrometry is a widespread approach to work out what are the constituents of a material. Atoms and molecules are removed from the material and collected, and subsequently, a critical step is to infer their correct identities based from patterns formed in their mass-to-charge ratios and relative isotopic abundances. However, this identification step still mainly relies on individual user's expertise, making its standardization challenging, and hindering efficient data processing. Here, we introduce an approach that leverages modern machine learning technique to identify peak patterns in time-of-flight mass spectra within microseconds, outperforming human users without loss of accuracy. Our approach is cross-validated on mass spectra generated from different time-of-flight mass spectrometry(ToF-MS) techniques, offering the ToF-MS community an open-source, intelligent mass spectra analysis.

Simplifying Architecture Search for Graph Neural Network

Recent years have witnessed the popularity of Graph Neural Networks (GNN) in various scenarios. To obtain optimal data-specific GNN architectures, researchers turn to neural architecture search (NAS) methods, which have made impressive progress in discovering effective architectures in convolutional neural networks. Two preliminary works, GraphNAS and Auto-GNN, have made first attempt to apply NAS methods to GNN. Despite the promising results, there are several drawbacks in expressive capability and search efficiency of GraphNAS and Auto-GNN due to the designed search space. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose the SNAG framework (Simplified Neural Architecture search for Graph neural networks), consisting of a novel search space and a reinforcement learning based search algorithm. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the SNAG framework compared to human-designed GNNs and NAS methods, including GraphNAS and Auto-GNN.

Phase-coherent asynchronous optical sampling system

Mutual phase coherence is the most crucial factor in asynchronous optical sampling system, and its enhancement is commonly achieved by phase-locking both femtosecond lasers to a shared narrow-linewidth cavity-stabilized laser. Here we report such a system with a low residual optical phase jitter at a level of 0.04 rad in a Fourier frequency band from 1 Hz to 5 MHz around 1.55 μm, corresponding to a timing jitter of 30 as. The residual phase jitter reaches 1 rad at a Fourier frequency between 0.06 Hz and 0.1 Hz, from which the phase-coherence time is inferred at least 10 s. The multi-heterodyne beats experimentally reveal a hardware-limited phase coherence time of ~8.15 s throughout the direct lasing spectral band.

Vertex-reinforced Random Walk for Network Embedding

In this paper, we study the fundamental problem of random walk for network embedding. We propose to use non-Markovian random walk, variants of vertex-reinforced random walk (VRRW), to fully use the history of a random walk path. To solve the getting stuck problem of VRRW, we introduce an exploitation-exploration mechanism to help the random walk jump out of the stuck set. The new random walk algorithms share the same convergence property of VRRW and thus can be used to learn stable network embeddings. Experimental results on two link prediction benchmark datasets and three node classification benchmark datasets show that our proposed approach reinforce2vec can outperform state-of-the-art random walk based embedding methods by a large margin.

Ranking Users in Social Networks with Motif-based PageRank

PageRank has been widely used to measure the authority or the influence of a user in social networks. However, conventional PageRank only makes use of edge-based relations, which represent first-order relations between two connected nodes. It ignores higher-order relations that may exist between nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, motif-based PageRank (MPR), to incorporate higher-order relations into the conventional PageRank computation. Motifs are subgraphs consisting of a small number of nodes. We use motifs to capture higher-order relations between nodes in a network and introduce two methods, one linear and one non-linear, to combine PageRank with higher-order relations. We conduct extensive experiments on three real-world networks, namely, DBLP, Epinions, and Ciao. We study different types of motifs, including 3-node simple and anchor motifs, 4-node and 5-node motifs. Besides using single motif, we also run MPR with ensemble of multiple motifs. We also design a learning task to evaluate the abilities of authority prediction with motif-based features. All experimental results demonstrate that MPR can significantly improve the performance of user ranking in social networks compared to the baseline methods.

Motif Enhanced Recommendation over Heterogeneous Information Network

Heterogeneous Information Networks (HIN) has been widely used in recommender systems (RSs). In previous HIN-based RSs, meta-path is used to compute the similarity between users and items. However, existing meta-path based methods only consider first-order relations, ignoring higher-order relations among the nodes of \textit{same} type, captured by \textit{motifs}. In this paper, we propose to use motifs to capture higher-order relations among nodes of same type in a HIN and develop the motif-enhanced meta-path (MEMP) to combine motif-based higher-order relations with edge-based first-order relations. With MEMP-based similarities between users and items, we design a recommending model MoHINRec, and experimental results on two real-world datasets, Epinions and CiaoDVD, demonstrate its superiority over existing HIN-based RS methods.

Linear Dichroism Conversion in Quasi One-Dimensional Perovskite Chalcogenide

Anisotropic photonic materials with linear dichroism are crucial components in many sensing, imaging and communication applications. Such materials play an important role as polarizers, filters and wave-plates in photonic devices and circuits. Conventional crystalline materials with optical anisotropy typically show unidirectional linear dichroism over a broad wavelength range. The linear dichroism conversion phenomenon has not been observed in crystalline materials. Here, we report the investigation of the unique linear dichroism conversion phenomenon in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) hexagonal perovskite chalcogenide BaTiS3. The material shows record level of optical anisotropy within the visible wavelength range. In contrast to conventional anisotropic optical materials, the linear dichroism polarity in BaTiS3 makes an orthogonal change at an optical wavelength corresponding to the photon energy of 1.78 eV. First principle calculations reveal that this anomalous linear dichroism conversion behavior originates from different selection rules of the optical transitions from the parallel bands in the BaTiS3 material. Wavelength dependent polarized Raman spectroscopy further confirms this phenomenon. Such material with linear dichroism conversion property can facilitate new ability to control and sense the energy and polarization of light, and lead to novel photonic devices such as polarization-wavelength selective detectors and lasers for multispectral imaging, sensing and optical communication applications.

POG: Personalized Outfit Generation for Fashion Recommendation at Alibaba iFashion

Increasing demand for fashion recommendation raises a lot of challenges for online shopping platforms and fashion communities. In particular, there exist two requirements for fashion outfit recommendation: the Compatibility of the generated fashion outfits, and the Personalization in the recommendation process. In this paper, we demonstrate these two requirements can be satisfied via building a bridge between outfit generation and recommendation. Through large data analysis, we observe that people have similar tastes in individual items and outfits. Therefore, we propose a Personalized Outfit Generation (POG) model, which connects user preferences regarding individual items and outfits with Transformer architecture. Extensive offline and online experiments provide strong quantitative evidence that our method outperforms alternative methods regarding both compatibility and personalization metrics. Furthermore, we deploy POG on a platform named Dida in Alibaba to generate personalized outfits for the users of the online application iFashion. This work represents a first step towards an industrial-scale fashion outfit generation and recommendation solution, which goes beyond generating outfits based on explicit queries, or merely recommending from existing outfit pools. As part of this work, we release a large-scale dataset consisting of 1.01 million outfits with rich context information, and 0.28 billion user click actions from 3.57 million users. To the best of our knowledge, this dataset is the largest, publicly available, fashion related dataset, and the first to provide user behaviors relating to both outfits and fashion items.

Behavior Sequence Transformer for E-commerce Recommendation in Alibaba

Deep learning based methods have been widely used in industrial recommendation systems (RSs). Previous works adopt an Embedding&MLP paradigm: raw features are embedded into low-dimensional vectors, which are then fed on to MLP for final recommendations. However, most of these works just concatenate different features, ignoring the sequential nature of users' behaviors. In this paper, we propose to use the powerful Transformer model to capture the sequential signals underlying users' behavior sequences for recommendation in Alibaba. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model, which is then deployed online at Taobao and obtain significant improvements in online Click-Through-Rate (CTR) comparing to two baselines.
