Feed-down effect on $Λ$ spin polarization

We develop a theoretical framework to study the feed-down effect of higher-lying strange baryons on the spin polarization of the $Λ$ hyperon. In this framework, we consider two-body decays through strong, electromagnetic, and weak processes and derive general formulas for the angular distribution and spin polarization of the daughter particle by adopting the helicity formalism. Using the realistic experimental data as input, we explore the feed-down contribution to the global and the local $Λ$ polarizations and find that such a contribution suppresses the primordial $Λ$ polarization, which is not strong enough to resolve the discrepancy between the current theoretical and the experimental results on the azimuthal-angle dependence of $Λ$ polarization. Our paper may also be useful for the measurement of spin polarization of baryons heavier than $Λ$ (e.g., $Ξ^-$) in future experiments.

Insight from elliptic flow of open charm mesons using quark coalescence model at RHIC and LHC energies

A study of elliptic flow of open charm mesons, $D^0$ and $D_S ^\pm$ using quark coalescence as a mechanism of hadronization of heavy quarks implemented in conjunction with A Multi Phase Transport (AMPT) model has been presented. We have studied the transverse momentum dependence of the elliptic flow parameter at mid-rapidity ($|y|$ $<$ 1.0) for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV (RHIC) and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV (LHC) for different values of partonic interaction cross-section and QCD coupling constant. We have compared our calculations with the experimentally measured data at the LHC energy. We have also studied the effect of shear viscosity on elliptic flow of open charm mesons within the transport model approach. Our study indicates that the elliptic flow of open charmed mesons is more sensitive to viscous properties of QGP medium as compared to light charged hadrons.

An experimental review on heavy flavor $v_{2}$ in heavy-ion collision

For over a decade now, the primary purpose of relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been to study the properties of QCD matter under extreme conditions -high temperature and high density. The heavy-ion experiments at both RHIC and LHC have recorded a wealth of data in p+p, p+Pb, d+Au, Cu+Cu, Cu+Au, Au+Au, Pb+Pb and U+U collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 GeV to 7 TeV. Heavy quarks are considered good probe to study the QCD matter created in relativistic collisions due to their very large mass and other unique properties. A precise measurement of various properties of heavy flavor hadrons provides an insight into the fundamental properties of the hot and dense medium created in these nuclei-nuclei collisions, such as transport coefficient and thermalization and hadronization mechanisms. The main focus of this paper is to present a review on the measurements of azimuthal anisotropy of heavy flavor hadrons and to outline the scientific opportunities in this sector due to future detector upgrade. We will mainly discuss the elliptic flow of open charmed meson ($D$-meson), $J/ψ$ and leptons from heavy flavor decay at RHIC and LHC energy.

Quantifying Properties of the QCD Matter at RHIC

We will review recent results on quantitative description of global properties of bulk partonic matter at RHIC. These results include strangeness phase space factor of the partonic matter, azimuthal angular anisotropy $v_2$, and transverse momentum $p_T$ distributions of effective partons at the hadronization of bulk partonic matter. We present empirical constraints on parton energy loss in the high $p_T$ region ($>$ 5 GeV/c). A flat $R_{AA}$ as a function of $p_T$ at mid-rapidity implies a constant fraction of the parton energy loss ($Δp_T/p_T$) and the fraction reaches 25% for neutral $π$, charged hadrons and non-photonic electrons of heavy quark decays from central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ 200 GeV. Collision centrality dependence of $Δp_T/p_T$ from Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions indicates that the fraction is approximately proportional to particle rapidity density $dn/dy$ divided by the initial transverse overlapping area of the colliding nuclei. Implications on dynamics of parton energy loss will be discussed.

Empirical Constraints on Parton Energy Loss in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions at RHIC

We present empirical features of parton energy loss in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC through studies of the spectra and nuclear modification factors ($R_{AA}$) for charged hadrons, neutral pions ($π^0$) and non-photonic electrons. The flat distribution of $R_{AA}$ at high transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) for a given collision centrality is consistent with a scenario where parton energy loss $Δp_{T}$ is proportional to $p_{T}$. The centrality dependence of the parton energy loss indicates the absence of path length dependence in the magnitude of energy loss. The lack of strong path length dependence suggests a dynamical picture where the dense partonic medium undergoes rapid expansion and the density of the medium falls rapidly in the first a few Fermi interval, which may be much shorter than the full path length. Implications of the empirical constraints on the parton energy loss will also be discussed.
