An alternative spontaneous symmetry breaking pattern for $\rm{U}(1)$ with no gapless Goldstone mode

An emergent gapless Goldstone mode originates from continuous spontaneous symmetry breaking, which has become a doctrine since the pioneering work by Goldstone [J. Goldstone, Nuovo Cimento \textbf{19}, 154 (1961)]. However, we argue that it is possible for a continuous symmetry group $\rm{U}(1)$ to make an exceptional case, simply due to the well-known mathematical result that a continuous symmetry group $\rm{U}(1)$ may be regarded as a limit of a discrete symmetry group $Z_q$ when $q$ tends to infinity. As a consequence, spontaneous symmetry breaking for such a continuous symmetry group $\rm{U}(1)$ does not necessarily lead to any gapless Goldstone mode. This is explicitly explained for an anisotropic extension of the ferromagnetic spin-1 biquadratic model. In a sense, this model provides an illustrative example regarding the dichotomy between continuity and discreteness.

The ground-state phase diagram for an alternative anisotropic extension of quantum spin-1 ferromagnetic biquadratic model

The ground-state phase diagram is mapped out for an alternative anisotropic extension of quantum spin-1 ferromagnetic biquadratic model, which accommodates twelve distinct phases: three degenerate fractal phases, six Luttinger liquid phases and three symmetry-protected trivial phases. It is found that distinct types of quantum phase transitions are involved between them. In particular, one type arises from an instability of a Luttinger liquid towards a degenerate fractal phase, and the other type describes spontaneous symmetry breaking with type-B Goldstone modes from one degenerate fractal phase to another degenerate fractal phase, with the fractal dimension $d_f$ being identical to the number of the type-B Goldstone modes, both of which turn out to be one. In addition, quantum phase transitions from the Luttinger liquid phases to the symmetry-protected trivial phases are identified to be in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class, with central charge being one.

Entanglement entropy for scale-invariant states: universal finite-size scaling

A universal finite system-size scaling analysis of the entanglement entropy is presented for highly degenerate ground states arising from spontaneous symmetry breaking with type-B Goldstone modes in exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum many-body systems. These states appear to be scale-invariant, but not conformally invariant. Our findings are based on a physical argument, imposing three constraints on the entanglement entropy, in addition to further confirmation from an asymptotic analysis of the entanglement entropy for the ${\rm SU}(2)$ spin-$1/2$ ferromagnetic states. The resulting universal scaling form is demonstrated for three fundamental models -- the ${\rm SU}(2)$ spin-$s$ Heisenberg ferromagnetic model, the ${\rm SU}(N+1)$ ferromagnetic model, and the staggered ${\rm SU}(3)$ spin-1 ferromagnetic biquadratic model. The results point towards a classification for distinct types of scale-invariant states, relevant to a complete classification of quantum states of matter.

Quantum coherence and spin nematic to nematic quantum phase transitions in biquadratic spin-1 and -2 XY chains with rhombic single-ion anisotropy

We investigate quantum phase transitions and quantum coherence in infinite biquadratic spin-1 and -2 XY chains with rhombic single-ion anisotropy. All considered coherence measures such as the $l_1$ norm of coherence, the relative entropy of coherence, and the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence, and the quantum mutual information show consistently that singular behaviors occur for the spin-1 system, which enables to identity quantum phase transitions. For the spin-2 system, the relative entropy of coherence and the quantum mutual information properly detect no singular behavior in the whole system parameter range, while the $l_1$ norm of coherence and the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence show a conflicting singular behavior of their first-order derivatives. Examining local magnetic moments and spin quadrupole moments lead to the explicit identification of novel orderings of spin quadrupole moments with zero magnetic moments in the whole parameter space. We find the three uniaxial spin nematic quadrupole phases for the spin-1 system and the two biaxial spin nematic phases for the spin-2 system. For the spin-2 system, the two orthogonal biaxial spin nematic states are connected adiabatically without an explicit phase transition, which can be called quantum crossover. The quantum crossover region is estimated by using the quantum fidelity. Whereas for the spin-1 system, the two discontinuous quantum phase transitions occur between three distinct uniaxial spin nematic phases. We discuss the quantum coherence measures and the quantum mutual information in connection with the quantum phase transitions including the quantum crossover.

Critical exponents of block-block mutual information in one-dimensional infinite lattice systems

We study the mutual information between two lattice-blocks in terms of von Neumann entropies for one-dimensional infinite lattice systems. Quantum $q$-state Potts model and transverse field spin-$1/2$ XY model are considered numerically by using the infinite matrix product state (iMPS) approach. As a system parameter varies, block-block mutual informations exhibit a singular behavior that enables to identify critical points for quantum phase transition. As happens with the von Neumann entanglement entropy of a single block, at the critical points, the block-block mutual information between the two lattice-blocks of $\ell$ contiguous sites equally partitioned in a lattice-block of $2\ell$ contiguous sites shows a logarithmic leading behavior, which yields the central charge $c$ of the underlying conformal field theory. As the separation between the two lattice-blocks increases, the mutual information reveals a consistent power-law decaying behavior for various truncation dimensions and lattice-block sizes. The critical exponent of block-block mutual information in the thermodynamic limit is estimated by extrapolating the exponents of power-law decaying regions for finite truncation dimensions. For a given lattice-block size $\ell$, the critical exponents for the same universality classes seem to have very close values each other. Whereas the critical exponents have different values to a degree of distinction for different universality classes. As the lattice-block size becomes bigger, the critical exponent becomes smaller.

Symmetry-protected trivial phases and quantum phase transitions in an anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin-1 biquadratic model

The ground state phase diagram is obtained for an antiferromagnetic spin-1 anisotropic biquadratic model. With the help of symmetry and duality transformations, three symmetry-protected trivial phases and one dimerized symmetry breaking phase are found. Local and nonlocal order parameters are identified to characterize these phases. Quantum phase transitions between the symmetry-protected trivial phases belong to the Gaussian universality class with central charge c = 1, and quantum phase transitions from the symmetry-protected trivial phases to the dimerized phase belong to the Ising universality class with central charge c = 1/2. In addition, the model admits three characteristic lines of factorized ground states, which are located in the symmetry-protected trivial phases instead of a symmetry breaking phase, in sharp contrast to other known cases.

Some ground-state expectation values for the free parafermion Z(N) spin chain

We consider the calculation of ground-state expectation values for the non-Hermitian Z(N) spin chain described by free parafermions. For N=2 the model reduces to the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field with open boundary conditions. Use is made of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem to obtain exact results for particular single site and nearest-neighbour ground-state expectation values for general N which are valid for sites deep inside the chain. These results are tested numerically for N=3, along with how they change as a function of distance from the boundary.

Universal scaling relationship between classical and quantum correlations in critical quantum spin chains

We numerically investigate classical and quantum correlations in one-dimensional quantum critical systems. The infinite matrix product state (iMPS) representation is employed in order to consider an infinite-size spin chain. By using the infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm, iMPS ground state wave functions are obtained at critical points for the transverse-field spin-$1/2$ XY model. From the ground state wave functions, we calculate classical and quantum correlations and mutual information. All of the correlations are found to exhibit a power-law decay with the increments of the lattice distance for both the transition lines of the Ising universality class and the Gaussian universality class. Such power-law scaling behaviors of the correlations manifest the existence of diversing correlation lengths, which means scale invariance. The critical features of the correlations can be characterized by introducing a critical exponent of the power-law decaying correlations. Similar to the critical exponent $η$ of the spin-spin correlation for the universality classes in the transverse-field XY model, we calculate the critical exponents of the two-spin classical and quantum correlations as well as that of the corresponding mutual information. All of the correlations have the same critical exponents, i.e., $η^{I}=η^{C}=η^{D}$ at a critical point, where the superscripts $I$, $C$, and $D$ stand for mutual information, classical correlation, and quantum correlation, respectively. Furthermore, the critical exponent $η$ of the spin-spin correlation is shown to relate to $η= η^α/2$ with $α\in \{ I, C, D\}$.

Duality and ground-state phase diagram for the quantum XYZ model with arbitrary spin $s$ in one spatial dimension

Five duality transformations are unveiled for the quantum XYZ model with arbitrary spin $s$ in one spatial dimension. The presence of these duality transformations drastically reduces the entire ground-state phase diagram to two {\it finite} regimes - the principal regimes, with all the other ten regimes dual to them. Combining with the determination of critical points from the conventional order parameter approach and/or the fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions, we are able to map out the ground-state phase diagram for the quantum XYZ model with arbitrary spin $s$. This is explicitly demonstrated for $s=1/2,1,3/2$ and 2. As it turns out, all the critical points, with central charge $c=1$, are self-dual under a respective duality transformation for half-integer as well as integer spin $s$. However, in the latter case, the presence of the so-called symmetry protected topological phase, i.e., the Haldane phase, results in extra lines of critical points with central charge $c=1/2$, which is not self-dual under any duality transformation.

Fidelity mechanics: analogues of the four thermodynamic laws and Landauer's principle

Fidelity mechanics is formalized as a framework to investigate quantum critical phenomena in quantum many-body systems. This is achieved by introducing fidelity temperature to properly quantify quantum fluctuations, which, together with fidelity entropy and fidelity internal energy, constitute three basic state functions in fidelity mechanics, thus enabling us to formulate analogues of the four thermodynamic laws and Landauer's principle at zero temperature. Fidelity flows are defined and may be interpreted as an alternative form of renormalization group flows. Thus, both stable and unstable fixed points are characterized in terms of fidelity temperature and fidelity entropy: divergent fidelity temperature for unstable fixed points and zero fidelity temperature and (locally) maximal fidelity entropy for stable fixed points. In addition, an inherently fundamental role of duality is clarified, resulting in a canonical form of the Hamiltonian in fidelity mechanics. Dualities, together with symmetry groups and factorizing fields, impose the constraints on a fidelity mechanical system, thus shaping fidelity flows from an unstable fixed point to a stable fixed point. A detailed analysis of fidelity mechanical state functions is presented for the quantum XY model, the transverse field quantum Ising chain in a longitudinal field, the spin-$1/2$ XYZ model and the XXZ model in a magnetic field.

Groundstate fidelity phase diagram of the fully anisotropic two-leg spin-1/2 XXZ ladder

The fully anisotropic two-leg spin-1/2 $XXZ$ ladder model is studied in terms of an algorithm based on the tensor network representation of quantum many-body states as an adaptation of projected entangled pair states to the geometry of translationally invariant infinite-size quantum spin ladders. The tensor network algorithm provides an effective method to generate the groundstate wave function, which allows computation of the groundstate fidelity per lattice site, a universal marker to detect phase transitions in quantum many-body systems. The groundstate fidelity is used in conjunction with local order and string order parameters to systematically map out the groundstate phase diagram of the ladder model. The phase diagram exhibits a rich diversity of quantum phases. These are the ferromagnetic, stripe ferromagnetic, rung singlet, rung triplet, N$\rm \acute{e}$el, stripe N$\rm \acute{e}$el and Haldane phases, along with the two $XY$ phases $XY1$ and $XY2$.

Finite-temperature fidelity and von Neumann entropy in the honeycomb spin lattice with quantum Ising interaction

The finite temperature phase diagram is obtained for an infinite honeycomb lattice with spin-$1/2$ Ising interaction $J$ by using thermal-state fidelity and von Neumann entropy based on the infinite projected entangled pair state algorithm with ancillas. % The tensor network representation of the fidelity, which is defined as an overlap measurement between two thermal states, is presented for thermal states on the honeycomb lattice. % We show that the fidelity per lattice site and the von Neumann entropy can capture the phase transition temperatures for applied magnetic field, consistent with the transition temperatures obtained via the transverse magnetizations, which indicates that a continuous phase transition occurs in the system. In the temperature-magnetic field plane, the phase boundary is found to have the functional form $(k_BT_c)^2 + h_c^2/2 = a J^2$ with a single numerical fitting coefficient $a = 2.298$, where $T_c$ and $h_c$ are the critical temperature and field with the Boltzmann constant $k_B$. For the quantum state at zero temperature, this phase boundary function gives the critical field estimate $h_c = \sqrt{2a} J \simeq 2.1438 J$, consistent with the known value $h_c = 2.13250(4)\, J$ calculated from a Cluster Monte Carlo approach. The critical temperature in the absence of magnetic field is estimated as $k_BT_c = \sqrt{a}J \simeq 1.5159\, J$, consistent with the exact result $k_BT_c = 1.51865...\, J$.

Entanglement entropy and massless phase in the antiferromagnetic three-state quantum chiral clock model

The von Neumann entanglement entropy is used to estimate the critical point $h_c/J \simeq 0.143(3)$ of the mixed ferro-antiferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model $H = \sum_i [ J ( X_i X_{i+1}^{\,2} + X_i^{\,2} X_{i+1} ) - h\, R_i ]$, where $X_i$ and $R_i$ are standard three-state Potts spin operators and $J>0$ is the antiferromagnetic coupling parameter. This critical point value gives improved estimates for two Kosterlitz-Thouless transition points in the antiferromagnetic ($β< 0$) region of the $Δ$--$β$ phase diagram of the three-state quantum chiral clock model, where $Δ$ and $β$ are, respectively, the chirality and coupling parameters in the clock model. These are the transition points $β_c \simeq - 0.143(3)$ at $Δ= \frac12$ between incommensurate and commensurate phases and $β_c \simeq - 7.0(1)$ at $Δ= 0$ between disordered and incommensurate phases. The von Neumann entropy is also used to calculate the central charge $c$ of the underlying conformal field theory in the massless phase $h \le h_c$. The estimate $c \simeq 1$ in this phase is consistent with the known exact value at the particular point $h/J = -1$ corresponding to the purely antiferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model. The algebraic decay of the Potts spin-spin correlation in the massless phase is used to estimate the continuously varying critical exponent $η$.

Geometric entanglement and quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional quantum lattice models

Geometric entanglement(GE), as a measure of multipartite entanglement, has been investigated as a universal tool to detect phase transitions in quantum many-body lattice models. We outline a systematic method to compute GE for two-dimensional (2D) quantum many-body lattice models based on the translational invariant structure of infinite projected entangled pair state (iPEPS) representations. By employing this method, the $q$-state quantum Potts model on the square lattice with $q \in \{2, 3 ,4, 5\}$ is investigated as a prototypical example. Further, we have explored three 2D Heisenberg models, such as the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXX and antiferromagnetic anisotropic XYX models in an external magnetic field, and the spin-1 antiferromagnetic XXZ model. We find that continuous GE does not guarantee a continuous phase transition across a phase transition point. We observe and thus classify three different types of continuous GE across a phase transition point: (i) GE is continuous with maximum value at the transition point and the phase transition is continuous, (ii) GE is continuous with maximum value at the transition point but the phase transition is discontinuous, and (iii) GE is continuous with non-maximum value at the transition point and the phase transition is continuous. For the models under consideration we find that the second and the third types are related to a point of dual symmetry and a fully polarized phase, respectively.

Energy landscape and conical intersection points of the driven Rabi model

We examine the energy surfaces of the driven Rabi model, also known as the biased or generalised Rabi model, as a function of the coupling strength and the driving term. The energy surfaces are plotted numerically from the known analytic solution. The resulting energy landscape consists of an infinite stack of sheets connected by conical intersection points located at the degenerate Juddian points in the eigenspectrum. Trajectories encircling these points are expected to exhibit a nonzero geometric phase.

The antiferromagnetic cross-coupled spin ladder: quantum fidelity and tensor networks approach

We investigate the phase diagram of the cross-coupled Heisenberg spin ladder with antiferromagnetic couplings. For this model there have been conflicting results for the existence of the columnar dimer phase, which was predicted on the basis of weak coupling field theory renormalisation group arguments. The numerical work on this model has been based on various approaches, including exact diagonalization, series expansions and density-matrix renormalization group calculations. Using the recently developed tensor network states and ground-state fidelity approach for quantum spin ladders we find no evidence for the existence of the columnar dimer phase. We also provide an argument based on the symmetry of the Hamiltonian which suggests that the phase diagram for antiferromagnetic couplings consists of a single line separating the rung-singlet and Haldane phases.

Integrability vs exact solvability in the quantum Rabi and Dicke models

The Rabi model describes the simplest interaction between light and matter via a two-level quantum system interacting with a bosonic field. We demonstrate that the fully quantised version of the Rabi model is integrable in the Yang-Baxter sense at two parameter values. The model is argued to be not Yang-Baxter integrable in general. This is in contrast to the claim that the quantum Rabi model is integrable based on a phenomenological criterion of quantum integrability not presupposing the existence of a set of commuting operators. Similar Yang-Baxter integrable points are identified for the generalised Rabi model and the fully quantised Dicke model. The integrable points have particular implications for the level statistics of the Dicke model.

Universal Order Parameters and Quantum Phase Transitions: A Finite-Size Approach

We propose a method to construct universal order parameters for quantum phase transitions in many-body lattice systems. The method exploits the $H$-orthogonality of a few near-degenerate lowest states of the Hamiltonian describing a given finite-size system, which makes it possible to perform finite-size scaling and take full advantage of currently available numerical algorithms. An explicit connection is established between the fidelity per site between two $H$-orthogonal states and the energy gap between the ground state and low-lying excited states in the finite-size system. The physical information encoded in this gap arising from finite-size fluctuations clarifies the origin of the universal order parameter. We demonstrate the procedure for the one-dimensional quantum formulation of the $q$-state Potts model, for $q=2,3,4$ and 5, as prototypical examples, using finite-size data obtained from the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm.
