DaMoC: Efficiently Selecting the Optimal Large Language Model for Fine-tuning Domain Tasks Based on Data and Model Compression

Large language models (LLMs) excel in general tasks but struggle with domain-specific ones, requiring fine-tuning with specific data. With many open-source LLMs available, selecting the best model for fine-tuning downstream tasks is challenging, primarily focusing on how to quickly identify the optimal LLM. We introduce a Data and Model Compression Framework (DaMoC) that addresses this challenge by: 1) Data Level: A systematic categorization of data filtering methodologies for LLMs is first established, classifying them into three distinct paradigms: (1) distribution-aware methods, (2) quality-aware methods, and (3) hybrid approaches considering both dimensions. Further, we enhance the density of key tokens in the text achieving token compression. Subsequently, we use an LLM to iterative rewrite the text to optimize its expression. 2) Model Level: We use layer similarity scores to assess each layer's importance and remove those with lower importance. Then, we introduce a sparse merging paradigm to preserve as much of the original model's capability as possible. Extensive experiments on four datasets, medical Q&A, financial Q&A, general Q&A, and reading comprehension, show that we can select the optimal LLM while saving approximately 20-fold in training time.

A two-way factor model for high-dimensional matrix data

In this article, we introduce a two-way factor model for a high-dimensional data matrix and study the properties of the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). The proposed model assumes separable effects of row and column attributes and captures the correlation across rows and columns with low-dimensional hidden factors. The model inherits the dimension-reduction feature of classical factor models but introduces a new framework with separable row and column factors, representing the covariance or correlation structure in the data matrix. We propose a block alternating, maximizing strategy to compute the MLE of factor loadings as well as other model parameters. We discuss model identifiability, obtain consistency and the asymptotic distribution for the MLE as the numbers of rows and columns in the data matrix increase. One interesting phenomenon that we learned from our analysis is that the variance of the estimates in the two-way factor model depends on the distance of variances of row factors and column factors in a way that is not expected in classical factor analysis. We further demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through simulation and real data analysis.

LGLG-WPCA: An Effective Texture-based Method for Face Recognition

In this paper, we proposed an effective face feature extraction method by Learning Gabor Log-Euclidean Gaussian with Whitening Principal Component Analysis (WPCA), called LGLG-WPCA. The proposed method learns face features from the embedded multivariate Gaussian in Gabor wavelet domain; it has the robust performance to adverse conditions such as varying poses, skin aging and uneven illumination. Because the space of Gaussian is a Riemannian manifold and it is difficult to incorporate learning mechanism in the model. To address this issue, we use L2EMG to map the multidimensional Gaussian model to the linear space, and then use WPCA to learn face features. We also implemented the key-point-based version of LGLG-WPCA, called LGLG(KP)-WPCA. Experiments show the proposed methods are effective and promising for face texture feature extraction and the combination of the feature of the proposed methods and the features of Deep Convolutional Network (DCNN) achieved the best recognition accuracies on FERET database compared to the state-of-the-art methods. In the next version of this paper, we will test the performance of the proposed methods on the large-varying pose databases.

The sharp drop in the flux striking the accretion disk

In this paper,We present a simple relativistic approach to analyze the flux striking the disk which is possibly from a source up the Black hole. The X-ray source is locate above an accretion disc orbiting around the black hole, this assumption is invoked by recent studies about iron k$α$. we compute and arguing that due to the light bending effect near black hole, the flux striking the disk surface may be very concentrated, which will undoubtable change the disk's ionization state hence change the iron line's ionization state and emissivity. Also,Our model may explain the steep power law when modelling the lines.
