Experimental realization of a broadband illusion optics device

We experimentally demonstrate the first metamaterial "illusion optics" device - an "invisible gateway" by using a transmission-line medium. The device contains an open channel that can block electromagnetic waves at a particular frequency range. We also demonstrate that such a device can work in a broad frequency range.

A simple design of an artificial electromagnetic black hole

We study the properties of an artificial electromagnetic black hole for transverse magnetic modes rigorously. A multi-layered structure of such a black hole is then proposed as a reduced variety for easy experimental realizations. An actual design of composite materials based on the effective medium theory is given eventually with only five kinds of real isotropic materials. The finite element method confirms the functionality of such a simple design.

Non-Euclidean cloaking for light waves

Non-Euclidean geometry combined with transformation optics has recently led to the proposal of an invisibility cloak that avoids optical singularities and therefore can work, in principle, in a broad band of the spectrum [U. Leonhardt and T. Tyc, Science 323, 110 (2009)]. Such a cloak is perfect in the limit of geometrical optics, but not in wave optics. Here we analyze, both analytically and numerically, full wave propagation in non-Euclidean cloaking. We show that the cloaking device performs remarkably well even in a regime beyond geometrical optics where the device is comparable in size with the wavelength. In particular, the cloak is nearly perfect for a spectrum of frequencies that are related to spherical harmonics. We also show that for increasing wavenumber the device works increasingly better, approaching perfect behavior in the limit of geometrical optics.

A simple route to a tunable electromagnetic gateway

Transformation optics is used to design a gateway that can block electromagnetic waves but allows the passage of other entities. Our conceptual device has the advantage that it can be realized with simple materials and structural parameters and can have a reasonably wide bandwidth. In particular, we show that our system can be implemented by using a magnetic photonic crystal structure that employs a square ray of ferrite rods, and as the field response of ferrites can be tuned by external magnetic fields, we end up with an electromagnetic gateway that can be open or shut using external fields. The functionality is also robust against the positional disorder of the rods that made up the photonic crystal.

Transformation optics in orthogonal coordinates

The author proposes the methodology of transformation optics in orthogonal coordinates to obtain the material parameters of the transformation media from the mapping in orthogonal coordinates. Several examples are given to show the applications of such a methodology by using the full-wave simulations.

A metamaterial frequency-selective super-absorber that has absorbing cross section significantly bigger than the geometric cross section

Using the idea of transformation optics, we propose a metamaterial device that serves as a frequency-selective super-absorber, which consists of an absorbing core material coated with a shell of isotropic double negative metamaterial. For a fixed volume, the absorption cross section of the super-absorber can be made arbitrarily large at one frequency. The double negative shell serves to amplify the evanescent tail of the high order incident cylindrical waves, which induces strong scattering and absorption. Our conclusion is supported by both analytical Mie theory and numerical finite element simulation. Interesting applications of such a device are discussed.

A complementary media invisibility cloak that can cloak objects at a distance outside the cloaking shell

Based on the concept of complementary media, we propose an invisibility cloak operating at a finite frequency that can cloak an object with a pre-specified shape and size within a certain distance outside the shell. The cloak comprises of a dielectric core, and an "anti-object" embedded inside a negative index shell. The cloaked object is not blinded by the cloaking shell since it lies outside the cloak. Full-wave simulations in two dimensions have been performed to verify the cloaking effect.

The Anti-Cloak

A kind of transformation media, which we shall call the "anti-cloak", is proposed to partially defeat the cloaking effect of the invisibility cloak. An object with an outer shell of "anti-cloak" is visible to the outside if it is coated with the invisible cloak. Fourier-Bessel analysis confirms this finding by showing that external electromagnetic wave can penetrate into the interior of the invisibility cloak with the help of the anti-cloak.

Reshape the perfect electrical conductor cylinder at will

A general method is proposed to design the cylindrical cloak, concentrator and superscatterer with arbitrary cross section. The method is demonstrated by the design of a perfect electrical conductor (PEC) reshaper which is able to reshape a PEC cylinder arbitrarily by combining the concept of cloak, concentrator and superscatterer together. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate its properties.

Superscatterer: Enhancement of scattering with complementary media

Based on the concept of complementary media, we propose a novel design which can enhance the electromagnetic wave scattering cross section of an object so that it looks like a scatterer bigger than the scale of the device. Such a ``superscatterer'' is realized by coating a negative refractive material shell on a perfect electrical conductor cylinder. The scattering field is analytically obtained by Mie scattering theory, and confirmed by full-wave simulations numerically. Such a device can be regarded as a cylindrical concave mirror for all angles.

Transformation media that turn a narrow slit into a large window

Based on the transformation media theory, the authors propose a way to replace a wide window with a narrow slit filled with designed metamaterial to achieve the same transmittance as the one of the window. Numerical simulations for a two dimensional case are given to illustrate the ideas and the performance of the design.

Electromagnetic wave manipulation using layered systems

We show that the optical properties of an oblique layered system with two kinds of isotropic materials can be described using the concept of transformation media as long as the thickness of the layers is much smaller than the wavelength. Once the connection with transformation media is established, we then show that oblique layered system can serve as a universal element to build a variety of interesting functional optical components such as wave splitters, wave combiners, one-dimensional cloaking devices and reflectionless field rotators.

Time delays and energy transport velocities in three dimensional ideal cloaking

We obtained the energy transport velocity distribution for a three dimensional ideal cloak explicitly. Near the operation frequency, the energy transport velocity has rather peculiar distribution. The velocity along a line joining the origin of the cloak is a constant, while the velocity approaches zero at the inner boundary of the cloak. A ray pointing right into the origin of the cloak will experience abrupt changes of velocities when it impinges on the inner surface of the cloak. This peculiar distribution causes infinite time delays for the ideal cloak within a geometric optics description.

On some constraints that limit the design of an invisibility cloak

Using the idea of transformation medium, a cloak can be designed to make a domain invisible for one target frequency. In this article, we examine the possibility to extend the bandwidth of such a cloak. We obtained a constraint of the band width, which is summarized as a simple inequality that states that limits the bandwidth of operation. The constraint originates from causality requirements. We suggest a simple strategy that can get around the constraint.

Scattering of elastic waves by elastic spheres in a NaCl-type phononic crystal

Based on the formalism developed by Psarobas et al [Phys. Rev. B 62, 278(2000)], which using the multiple scattering theory to calculate properties of simple phononic crystals, we propose a very simple method to study the NaCl-type phononic crystal. The NaCl-type phononic crystal consists of two kinds of non-overlapping elastic spheres with different mass densities, $L\acute{a}me$ coefficients and radius following the same periodicity of the ions in the real NaCl crystal. We focus on the (001) surface, and view the crystal as a sequence of planes of spheres, each plane of spheres has identical 2D periodicity. We obtained the complex band structure of the infinite crystal associated with this plane, and also calculated the transmission, reflection and absorption coefficients for an elastic wave (longitudinal or transverse) incident, at any angle, on a slab of the crystal of finite thickness.

Transformation media that rotate electromagnetic fields

We suggest a way to manipulate electromagnetic wave by introducing a rotation mapping of coordinates that can be realized by a specific transformation of permittivity and permeability of a shell surrounding an enclosed domain. Inside the enclosed domain, the information from outside will appear as if it comes from a different angle. Numerical simulations were performed to illustrate these properties.
