Fuzzy-NMS: Improving 3D Object Detection with Fuzzy Classification in NMS

Non-maximum suppression (NMS) is an essential post-processing module used in many 3D object detection frameworks to remove overlapping candidate bounding boxes. However, an overreliance on classification scores and difficulties in determining appropriate thresholds can affect the resulting accuracy directly. To address these issues, we introduce fuzzy learning into NMS and propose a novel generalized Fuzzy-NMS module to achieve finer candidate bounding box filtering. The proposed Fuzzy-NMS module combines the volume and clustering density of candidate bounding boxes, refining them with a fuzzy classification method and optimizing the appropriate suppression thresholds to reduce uncertainty in the NMS process. Adequate validation experiments are conducted using the mainstream KITTI and large-scale Waymo 3D object detection benchmarks. The results of these tests demonstrate the proposed Fuzzy-NMS module can improve the accuracy of numerous recently NMS-based detectors significantly, including PointPillars, PV-RCNN, and IA-SSD, etc. This effect is particularly evident for small objects such as pedestrians and bicycles. As a plug-and-play module, Fuzzy-NMS does not need to be retrained and produces no obvious increases in inference time.

Scene Graph for Embodied Exploration in Cluttered Scenario

The ability to handle objects in cluttered environment has been long anticipated by robotic community. However, most of works merely focus on manipulation instead of rendering hidden semantic information in cluttered objects. In this work, we introduce the scene graph for embodied exploration in cluttered scenarios to solve this problem. To validate our method in cluttered scenario, we adopt the Manipulation Question Answering (MQA) tasks as our test benchmark, which requires an embodied robot to have the active exploration ability and semantic understanding ability of vision and language. As a general solution framework to the task, we propose an imitation learning method to generate manipulations for exploration. Meanwhile, a VQA model based on dynamic scene graph is adopted to comprehend a series of RGB frames from wrist camera of manipulator along with every step of manipulation is conducted to answer questions in our framework. The experiments on of MQA dataset with different interaction requirements demonstrate that our proposed framework is effective for MQA task a representative of tasks in cluttered scenario.

Mixed Neural Voxels for Fast Multi-view Video Synthesis

Synthesizing high-fidelity videos from real-world multi-view input is challenging because of the complexities of real-world environments and highly dynamic motions. Previous works based on neural radiance fields have demonstrated high-quality reconstructions of dynamic scenes. However, training such models on real-world scenes is time-consuming, usually taking days or weeks. In this paper, we present a novel method named MixVoxels to better represent the dynamic scenes with fast training speed and competitive rendering qualities. The proposed MixVoxels represents the 4D dynamic scenes as a mixture of static and dynamic voxels and processes them with different networks. In this way, the computation of the required modalities for static voxels can be processed by a lightweight model, which essentially reduces the amount of computation, especially for many daily dynamic scenes dominated by the static background. To separate the two kinds of voxels, we propose a novel variation field to estimate the temporal variance of each voxel. For the dynamic voxels, we design an inner-product time query method to efficiently query multiple time steps, which is essential to recover the high-dynamic motions. As a result, with 15 minutes of training for dynamic scenes with inputs of 300-frame videos, MixVoxels achieves better PSNR than previous methods. TrOMR:Transformer-Based Polyphonic Optical Music Recognition

Optical Music Recognition (OMR) is an important technology in music and has been researched for a long time. Previous approaches for OMR are usually based on CNN for image understanding and RNN for music symbol classification. In this paper, we propose a transformer-based approach with excellent global perceptual capability for end-to-end polyphonic OMR, called TrOMR. We also introduce a novel consistency loss function and a reasonable approach for data annotation to improve recognition accuracy for complex music scores. Extensive experiments demonstrate that TrOMR outperforms current OMR methods, especially in real-world scenarios. We also develop a TrOMR system and build a camera scene dataset for full-page music scores in real-world. The code and datasets will be made available for reproducibility.

Heterogeneous Embodied Multi-Agent Collaboration

Multi-agent embodied tasks have recently been studied in complex indoor visual environments. Collaboration among multiple agents can improve work efficiency and has significant practical value. However, most of the existing research focuses on homogeneous multi-agent tasks. Compared with homogeneous agents, heterogeneous agents can leverage their different capabilities to allocate corresponding sub-tasks and cooperate to complete complex tasks. Heterogeneous multi-agent tasks are common in real-world scenarios, and the collaboration strategy among heterogeneous agents is a challenging and important problem to be solved. To study collaboration among heterogeneous agents, we propose the heterogeneous multi-agent tidying-up task, in which multiple heterogeneous agents with different capabilities collaborate with each other to detect misplaced objects and place them in reasonable locations. This is a demanding task since it requires agents to make the best use of their different capabilities to conduct reasonable task planning and complete the whole task. To solve this task, we build a heterogeneous multi-agent tidying-up benchmark dataset in a large number of houses with multiple rooms based on ProcTHOR-10K. We propose the hierarchical decision model based on misplaced object detection, reasonable receptacle prediction, as well as the handshake-based group communication mechanism. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. The project's website and videos of experiments can be found at https://hetercol.github.io/.

TG-Critic: A Timbre-Guided Model for Reference-Independent Singing Evaluation

Automatic singing evaluation independent of reference melody is a challenging task due to its subjective and multi-dimensional nature. As an essential attribute of singing voices, vocal timbre has a non-negligible effect and influence on human perception of singing quality. However, no research has been done to include timbre information explicitly in singing evaluation models. In this paper, a data-driven model TG-Critic is proposed to introduce timbre embeddings as one of the model inputs to guide the evaluation of singing quality. The trunk structure of TG-Critic is designed as a multi-scale network to summarize the contextual information from constant-Q transform features in a high-resolution way. Furthermore, an automatic annotation method is designed to construct a large three-class singing evaluation dataset with low human-effort. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the existing state-of-the-art models in most cases.

Path Planning for Air-Ground Robot Considering Modal Switching Point Optimization

An innovative sort of mobility platform that can both drive and fly is the air-ground robot. The need for an agile flight cannot be satisfied by traditional path planning techniques for air-ground robots. Prior studies had mostly focused on improving the energy efficiency of paths, seldom taking the seeking speed and optimizing take-off and landing places into account. A robot for the field application environment was proposed, and a lightweight global spatial planning technique for the robot based on the graph-search algorithm taking mode switching point optimization into account, with an emphasis on energy efficiency, searching speed, and the viability of real deployment. The fundamental concept is to lower the computational burden by employing an interchangeable search approach that combines planar and spatial search. Furthermore, to safeguard the health of the power battery and the integrity of the mission execution, a trap escape approach was also provided. Simulations are run to test the effectiveness of the suggested model based on the field DEM map. The simulation results show that our technology is capable of producing finished, plausible 3D paths with a high degree of believability. Additionally, the mode-switching point optimization method efficiently identifies additional acceptable places for mode switching, and the improved paths use less time and energy.

Informative Data Selection with Uncertainty for Multi-modal Object Detection

Noise has always been nonnegligible trouble in object detection by creating confusion in model reasoning, thereby reducing the informativeness of the data. It can lead to inaccurate recognition due to the shift in the observed pattern, that requires a robust generalization of the models. To implement a general vision model, we need to develop deep learning models that can adaptively select valid information from multi-modal data. This is mainly based on two reasons. Multi-modal learning can break through the inherent defects of single-modal data, and adaptive information selection can reduce chaos in multi-modal data. To tackle this problem, we propose a universal uncertainty-aware multi-modal fusion model. It adopts a multi-pipeline loosely coupled architecture to combine the features and results from point clouds and images. To quantify the correlation in multi-modal information, we model the uncertainty, as the inverse of data information, in different modalities and embed it in the bounding box generation. In this way, our model reduces the randomness in fusion and generates reliable output. Moreover, we conducted a completed investigation on the KITTI 2D object detection dataset and its derived dirty data. Our fusion model is proven to resist severe noise interference like Gaussian, motion blur, and frost, with only slight degradation. The experiment results demonstrate the benefits of our adaptive fusion. Our analysis on the robustness of multi-modal fusion will provide further insights for future research.

Hybrid Robotic Grasping with a Soft Multimodal Gripper and a Deep Multistage Learning Scheme

Grasping has long been considered an important and practical task in robotic manipulation. Yet achieving robust and efficient grasps of diverse objects is challenging, since it involves gripper design, perception, control and learning, etc. Recent learning-based approaches have shown excellent performance in grasping a variety of novel objects. However, these methods either are typically limited to one single grasping mode, or else more end effectors are needed to grasp various objects. In addition, gripper design and learning methods are commonly developed separately, which may not adequately explore the ability of a multimodal gripper. In this paper, we present a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework to achieve multistage hybrid robotic grasping with a new soft multimodal gripper. A soft gripper with three grasping modes (i.e., enveloping, sucking, and enveloping_then_sucking) can both deal with objects of different shapes and grasp more than one object simultaneously. We propose a novel hybrid grasping method integrated with the multimodal gripper to optimize the number of grasping actions. We evaluate the DRL framework under different scenarios (i.e., with different ratios of objects of two grasp types). The proposed algorithm is shown to reduce the number of grasping actions (i.e., enlarge the grasping efficiency, with maximum values of 161% in simulations and 154% in real-world experiments) compared to single grasping modes.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Robotic Pushing and Picking in Cluttered Environment

In this paper, a novel robotic grasping system is established to automatically pick up objects in cluttered scenes. A composite robotic hand composed of a suction cup and a gripper is designed for grasping the object stably. The suction cup is used for lifting the object from the clutter first and the gripper for grasping the object accordingly. We utilize the affordance map to provide pixel-wise lifting point candidates for the suction cup. To obtain a good affordance map, the active exploration mechanism is introduced to the system. An effective metric is designed to calculate the reward for the current affordance map, and a deep Q-Network (DQN) is employed to guide the robotic hand to actively explore the environment until the generated affordance map is suitable for grasping. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed robotic grasping system is able to greatly increase the success rate of the robotic grasping in cluttered scenes.

MQA: Answering the Question via Robotic Manipulation

In this paper, we propose a novel task, Manipulation Question Answering (MQA), where the robot performs manipulation actions to change the environment in order to answer a given question. To solve this problem, a framework consisting of a QA module and a manipulation module is proposed. For the QA module, we adopt the method for the Visual Question Answering (VQA) task. For the manipulation module, a Deep Q Network (DQN) model is designed to generate manipulation actions for the robot to interact with the environment. We consider the situation where the robot continuously manipulating objects inside a bin until the answer to the question is found. Besides, a novel dataset that contains a variety of object models, scenarios and corresponding question-answer pairs is established in a simulation environment. Extensive experiments have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Fabric Defect Detection Using Vision-Based Tactile Sensor

This paper introduces a new type of system for fabric defect detection with the tactile inspection system. Different from existed visual inspection systems, the proposed system implements a vision-based tactile sensor. The tactile sensor, which mainly consists of a camera, four LEDs, and an elastic sensing layer, captures detailed information about fabric surface structure and ignores the color and pattern. Thus, the ambiguity between a defect and image background related to fabric color and pattern is avoided. To utilize the tactile sensor for fabric inspection, we employ intensity adjustment for image preprocessing, Residual Network with ensemble learning for detecting defects, and uniformity measurement for selecting ideal dataset for model training. An experiment is conducted to verify the performance of the proposed tactile system. The experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed system, which performs well in detecting structural defects for various types of fabrics. In addition, the system does not require external light sources, which skips the process of setting up and tuning a lighting environment.

Coupled Modeling and Fusion Control for a Multi-modal Deformable Land-air Robot

A deformable land-air robot is introduced with excellent driving and flying capabilities, offering a smooth switching mechanism between the two modes. An elaborate coupled dynamics model is established for the robot, including rotors, chassis, suspension, and the deformable structure. In addition, a model-based controller is designed for landing and mode switching in various unstructured conditions, such as slopes and curved surface. And considering locomotion and complex near-ground situations to achieve cooperation between the two fused modalities. This system was simulated in ADAMS/Simulink and a tested with hardware-in-the-loop system was constructed for testing in various slopes. With a designed controller, the results showed the robot is capable of fast and smooth land-air switching, with a 24.6 % faster landing on slopes. The controller can also reduce landing offset and impact force more effectively than the normal control method at 32.7 % and 34.3 %, respectively.

Embodied Referring Expression for Manipulation Question Answering in Interactive Environment

Embodied agents are expected to perform more complicated tasks in an interactive environment, with the progress of Embodied AI in recent years. Existing embodied tasks including Embodied Referring Expression (ERE) and other QA-form tasks mainly focuses on interaction in term of linguistic instruction. Therefore, enabling the agent to manipulate objects in the environment for exploration actively has become a challenging problem for the community. To solve this problem, We introduce a new embodied task: Remote Embodied Manipulation Question Answering (REMQA) to combine ERE with manipulation tasks. In the REMQA task, the agent needs to navigate to a remote position and perform manipulation with the target object to answer the question. We build a benchmark dataset for the REMQA task in the AI2-THOR simulator. To this end, a framework with 3D semantic reconstruction and modular network paradigms is proposed. The evaluation of the proposed framework on the REMQA dataset is presented to validate its effectiveness.

CAMO-MOT: Combined Appearance-Motion Optimization for 3D Multi-Object Tracking with Camera-LiDAR Fusion

3D Multi-object tracking (MOT) ensures consistency during continuous dynamic detection, conducive to subsequent motion planning and navigation tasks in autonomous driving. However, camera-based methods suffer in the case of occlusions and it can be challenging to accurately track the irregular motion of objects for LiDAR-based methods. Some fusion methods work well but do not consider the untrustworthy issue of appearance features under occlusion. At the same time, the false detection problem also significantly affects tracking. As such, we propose a novel camera-LiDAR fusion 3D MOT framework based on the Combined Appearance-Motion Optimization (CAMO-MOT), which uses both camera and LiDAR data and significantly reduces tracking failures caused by occlusion and false detection. For occlusion problems, we are the first to propose an occlusion head to select the best object appearance features multiple times effectively, reducing the influence of occlusions. To decrease the impact of false detection in tracking, we design a motion cost matrix based on confidence scores which improve the positioning and object prediction accuracy in 3D space. As existing multi-object tracking methods only consider a single category, we also propose to build a multi-category loss to implement multi-object tracking in multi-category scenes. A series of validation experiments are conducted on the KITTI and nuScenes tracking benchmarks. Our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance and the lowest identity switches (IDS) value (23 for Car and 137 for Pedestrian) among all multi-modal MOT methods on the KITTI test dataset. And our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance among all algorithms on the nuScenes test dataset with 75.3% AMOTA.

Simultaneously Enhanced Tenacity, Rupture Work, and Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Nanotubes Fibers by Increasing the Effective Tube Contribution

Although individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are superior as constituents to polymer chains, the mechanical and thermal properties of CNT fibers (CNTFs) remain inferior to commercial synthetic fibers due to the lack of synthesis methods to embed CNTs effectively in superstructures. The application of conventional techniques for mechanical enhancement resulted in a mild improvement of target properties while achieving parity at best on others. In this work, a Double-Drawing technique is developed to deform continuously grown CNTFs and rearrange the constituent CNTs in both mesoscale and nanoscale morphology. Consequently, the mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting CNTFs can be jointly improved, and simultaneously reach their highest performances with specific strength (tenacity) $\rm\sim3.30\,N\,tex^{-1}$, work of rupture $\rm\sim70\,J\,g^{-1}$, and thermal conductivity $\rm\sim354\,W\,m^{-1}\,K^{-1}$, despite starting from commercial low-crystallinity materials ($I{\rm_G}:I{\rm_D}\sim5$). The processed CNTFs are more versatile than comparable carbon fiber, Zylon, Dyneema, and Kevlar. Furthermore, based on evidence of load transfer efficiency on individual CNTs measured with In-Situ Stretching Raman, we find the main contributors to property enhancements are (1) the increased proportion of load-bearing CNT bundles and (2) the extension of effective length of tubes attached on these bundles.
