EMAN: Optimization-Driven Capacity Growth through Path Emergence in Multi-Task Learning

Existing multi-task learning methods rely on hard sharing, multiple paths or experts, adaptive sharing, and dynamic expansion. However, their capacity changes are usually constrained by predefined structures or triggered by task boundaries and conflict signals. This raises a fundamental question: can a network start from exact single-path computation and grow a new independent path only when persistent optimization evidence appears? We propose the Emergent Modular Atomic Network (EMAN), an optimization-driven framework for exposing an antisymmetric growth direction through latent relative phases without instantiating a second path, and for monitoring multiple decision signals during training to transform local optimization evidence into a structural decision. EMAN materializes two equal-capacity independent paths only after certification. EMAN adaptively allocates shared and task-specific representation capacity to accommodate varying task requirements. Extensive experiments on controlled rank settings, PASCAL-Context, and NYUv2 validate its effectiveness, achieving improved performance at a competitive computational cost.

BM25 Wins at Scale: A Scaling Study of Retrieval-Augmented Generation Paradigms

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) spans lexical and dense retrieval, graph-based indexing, and agentic search, but these paradigms are usually evaluated on different benchmarks at one corpus size, leaving their accuracy-cost scaling unclear. To bridge this gap, we present a controlled study that varies corpus size along 28 strictly nested tiers spanning roughly 450-fold, while holding questions and a fixed bedrock of relevant and adversarial documents unchanged. Under one reader model and one judging protocol, we measure official accuracy, construction and query tokens, and latency. The results reveal a scale-dependent crossover rather than an unconditional winner. File-System Agent leads at the smallest shared tiers, but its sequential exploration costs 39 times more query tokens at the bedrock and becomes less effective as the search space grows. Around 10 million corpus tokens, BM25 overtakes it and leads at every larger shared tier, with a margin approaching 20 points at full scale. BM25 also anchors the low-cost end of the Pareto frontier without LLM-based construction. Dense retrieval remains efficient but less accurate, whereas graph-based RAG encounters construction walls before deployment scale and its scalable variants remain below BM25 at shared tiers. Overall, corpus growth increasingly favors global candidate ranking: lexical retrieval is the strongest scalable default, while agentic reasoning works best after ranked discovery rather than in place of it.

AgriCHN: A Comprehensive Cross-domain Resource for Chinese Agricultural Named Entity Recognition

Agricultural named entity recognition is a specialized task focusing on identifying distinct agricultural entities within vast bodies of text, including crops, diseases, pests, and fertilizers. It plays a crucial role in enhancing information extraction from extensive agricultural text resources. However, the scarcity of high-quality agricultural datasets, particularly in Chinese, has resulted in suboptimal performance when employing mainstream methods for this purpose. Most earlier works only focus on annotating agricultural entities while overlook the profound correlation of agriculture with hydrology and meteorology. To fill this blank, we present AgriCHN, a comprehensive open-source Chinese resource designed to promote the accuracy of automated agricultural entity annotation. The AgriCHN dataset has been meticulously curated from a wealth of agricultural articles, comprising a total of 4,040 sentences and encapsulating 15,799 agricultural entity mentions spanning 27 diverse entity categories. Furthermore, it encompasses entities from hydrology to meteorology, thereby enriching the diversity of entities considered. Data validation reveals that, compared with relevant resources, AgriCHN demonstrates outstanding data quality, attributable to its richer agricultural entity types and more fine-grained entity divisions. A benchmark task has also been constructed using several state-of-the-art neural NER models. Extensive experimental results highlight the significant challenge posed by AgriCHN and its potential for further research.

Size and shape fluctuations of ultrasoft colloids

Ultrasoft colloidal particle fluctuates due to its flexibility. Such fluctuation is essential for colloidal structure and dynamics, but is challenging to quantify experimentally. We use dendrimers as a model system to study the fluctuation of ultrasoft colloids. By considering the dynamic polydispersity in the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) model, and introducing the fluctuation of invasive water into the contrast in SANS, we reveal the fluctuating amplitudes of the size and shape of the dendrimer of generation 6 at finite concentrations. The size fluctuation is suppressed while the shape fluctuation increases as the weight fraction of dendrimers passes 11%. With neutron spin echo data, we suggest that such crossover originates from the competition between the inter- and intra-particle dynamics. Further investigation on lower-generation samples shows a contrary result, which suggests a structural basis for these dynamic phenomena.
