Entangling two levitated particles in free space via trap modulation and Bayesian feedback

We propose an optimal control scheme for generating quantum entanglement between two optically-levitated nanoparticles in free space. Specifically, we consider that the mechanical motion frequencies of the two levitated particles are modulated by adjusting the amplitude of the trapping beam. The two particles are coupled through Coulomb interaction, and the particles' positions are continuously monitored via homodyne detection on the back-scattered light from both particles. By employing an optimal Bayesian feedback scheme, we achieve unconditional entanglement between the two particles in steady states. More precisely, a Kalman filter is used to estimate the states of the two particles and subsequently a linear quadratic regulator is applied to derive the optimal feedback forces exerted on the particles. Physically, periodic modulation enables significant quantum squeezing in both the common mode and the differential mode of the two particles. The Coulomb coupling between the particles introduces a difference in the squeezing of the two normal modes, thereby facilitating the entanglement of the two levitated particles. Our scheme allows for the realization of both conditional and unconditional entanglement at relatively low measurement efficiencies and with low requirements for Coulomb coupling strength, significantly enhancing the feasibility of implementation.

Remote preparation of motional Schr\"{o}dinger cat states via dissipatively-driven non-Gaussian mechanical entanglement

In this paper, we propose a driven-dissipative scheme for generating non-Gaussian mechanical entangled states and remotely preparing mechanical Schr\"{o}dinger cat states via the entanglement. The system under study consists of a cavity optomechanical setup with two frequency-mismatched mechanical oscillators coupled to a cavity field driven by a bichromatic pump. We show that under proper conditions, an effective Hamiltonian for nondegenerate parametric downconversion involving the two mechanical oscillators and the cavity field can be engineered. We demonstrate analytically and numerically that the cavity dissipation drives the mechanical oscillators into a steady-state pair-coherent state. The no-Gaussianity and nonclassical properties, including Winger negativity, entanglement and quantum steering, of the achieved non-Gaussian mechanical state are investigated in detail. We further show that homodyne detection on one mechanical oscillator enables the remote generation of Schr\"{o}dinger cat states in the other oscillator through the non-Gaussian mechanical entanglement. As we show, this detection can be implemented by transferring the mechanical state to the output field of an auxiliary probe cavity coupled to the target oscillator, followed by homodyne detection on the output field. We also discuss the robustness of the mechanical entangled states and cat states against thermal fluctuations. Our findings establish a feasible approach for the dissipative and remote preparation of mechanical nonclassical states.

Optomechanical non-Gaussian quantum steering and remote preparation of large-size motional Sch\"ordinger cat states

In this paper, we present a scheme for remotely generating large-size motional Schr\"{o}dinger cat states in cavity optomechanical (OM) systems with non-Gaussian quantum steering of continuous variables. We consider that the output field from the OM cavity undergoes three typical kinds of multiphoton operations: multiphoton subtraction, multiphoton addition, or multiphoton catalysis, followed by homodyne detection. We first demonstrate that these multiphoton operations can lead to non-Gaussian OM quantum steerable correlations, which are unveiled by the subsequent homodyne detection with a Fisher-information-based steering criterion. It is found that the non-Gaussian steering is obviously enhanced with an increasing number $n$ of photons in the multiphoton operations, which, as we show, fails to be revealed with the well-known Reid's steering criterion. It therefore suggests that the Fisher-information-based criterion is more effective for witnessing non-Gaussian quantum steering. We next show that the strong OM steering enables the remote preparation of large-size Schr\"{o}dinger odd or even cat states of the mechanical oscillator by the homodyne detection. Accordingly, the amplitudes of the cat states also increase significantly with the photon number $n$, particularly in the cases of multiphoton subtraction and addition. Our results reveal the properties of non-Gaussian steering generated by multiphoton operations, and the large cat states of macroscopic mechanical resonators hold promise for fundamental tests in quantum mechanics and practical applications in quantum science.

Steady-state tripartite non-Gaussian entanglement and steering in output field from intracavity triple-photon parametric downconversion

Nondegenerate triple-photon parametric downconversion (NTPD) is a potential source for unconditional tripartite non-Gaussian entangled states of continuous variables. Recent experiment has demonstrated strong third-order correlations among bright photon triplets via microwave NTPD in a superconducting cavity [Phys. Rev. X 10, 011011 (2020)]. Previous theoretic works have revealed that only short-time genuine tripartite non-Gaussian entanglement can be generated in NTPD even in the absence of dissipation. In this paper, we investigate the properties of tripartite non-Gaussian entanglement and steering in the cavity output field by taking into account of the cavity dissipation. We first derive experimentally detectable criteria for fully inseparable and genuine tripartite non-Gaussian entanglement and steering. With the criteria, we then find that steady-state tripartite non-Gaussian entanglement and steering can be generated in the output field, although they merely exist in the short-time regime inside the cavity. We also find that the initial cavity-field coherent states can obviously enhance the steady-state and transient tripartite entanglement and steering, in comparison to the case of initial vacuum states. We finally show that the output tripartite non-Gaussian steerable correlations can be applied to the remote generation of negative Wigner-function quantum states by homodyne detection.

Magnon cat states in a cavity-magnon-qubit system via two-magnon driving and dissipation

We propose an efficient method for dissipative generation of magnonic cat states in a cavity-magnon-qubit hybrid system by exploiting a two-magnon driving and dissipation mechanism. When both the magnon and qubit are driven, a coherent nonlinear two-magnon interaction is induced, wherein the qubit and the magnon mode exchange energy through magnon pairs. The dissipation of the qubit is exploited to steer the magnon mode into a quantum superposition of distinct coherent states, where the magnon mode evolves into either an even or odd cat state, depending on the parity of the magnon initial state. For the case where the magnon initial state is a superposition state, e.g., of $\ket{0}$ and $\ket{1}$, the magnon mode can evolve into a weighted mixture of the even and odd cat states. We also find that magnon squeezed states may emerge during the short-time evolution, showcasing the capability of our mechanism in preparing diverse magnon non-classical states. Magnonic cat and squeezed states are macroscopic quantum states and find applications in macroscopic quantum studies and quantum sensing, e.g., in the dark matter search using ferromagnetic axion haloscopes.

Cavity magnomechanics: from classical to quantum

Hybrid quantum systems based on magnons in magnetic materials have made significant progress in the past decade. They are built based on the couplings of magnons with microwave photons, optical photons, vibration phonons, and superconducting qubits. In particular, the interactions among magnons, microwave cavity photons, and vibration phonons form the system of cavity magnomechanics (CMM), which lies in the interdisciplinary field of cavity QED, magnonics, quantum optics, and quantum information. Here, we review the experimental and theoretical progress of this emerging field. We first introduce the underlying theories of the magnomechanical coupling, and then some representative classical phenomena that have been experimentally observed, including magnomechanically induced transparency, magnomechanical dynamical backaction, magnon-phonon cross-Kerr nonlinearity, etc. We also discuss a number of theoretical proposals, which show the potential of the CMM system for preparing different kinds of quantum states of magnons, phonons, and photons, and hybrid systems combining magnomechanics and optomechanics and relevant quantum protocols based on them. Finally, we summarize this review and provide an outlook for the future research directions in this field.

Correlated two-photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to two- or three-level giant atoms

We study the two-photon scattering processes in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a two- or three-level giant atom, respectively. The accumulated phase shift between the two coupling points can be utilized to alter the scattering processes. We obtain the exact interacting two-photon scattering wavefunction of these two systems following the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism, from which the analytical expressions of incoherent power spectra and second-order correlations are also derived. The incoherent spectrum, defined by the correlation of the bound state, serves as a useful indication of photon-photon correlation. The second-order correlation function gives a direct measure of photon-photon correlation. For photons scattered by the two-level giant atom, the accumulated phase shift can be used to improve photon-photon correlation, and adjust the evolution of the second-order correlation. In the system of the three-level giant atom, the photon-photon correlation can be substantially increased. Moreover, the photon-photon interactions and correlation distance of scattered photons can be further enhanced by tuning the accumulated phase shift.

Magnon squeezing by two-tone driving of a qubit in cavity-magnon-qubit systems

We propose a scheme for preparing magnon squeezed states in a hybrid cavity-magnon-qubit system. The system consists of a microwave cavity that simultaneously couples to a magnon mode of a macroscopic yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) sphere via the magnetic-dipole interaction and to a transmon-type superconducting qubit via the electric-dipole interaction. By far detuning from the magnon-qubit system, the microwave cavity is adiabatically eliminated. The magnon mode and the qubit then get effectively coupled via the mediation of virtual photons of the microwave cavity. We show that by driving the qubit with two microwave fields and by appropriately choosing the drive frequencies and strengths, magnonic parametric amplification can be realized, which leads to magnon quadrature squeezing with the noise below vacuum fluctuation. We provide optimal conditions for achieving magnon squeezing, and moderate squeezing can be obtained using currently available parameters. The generated squeezed states are of a magnon mode involving more than $10^{18}$ spins and thus macroscopic quantum states. The work may find promising applications in quantum information processing and high-precision measurements based on magnons and in the study of macroscopic quantum states.

Two-tone modulated cavity electromagnonics

Cavity electromagnonics has increasingly emerged as a new platform for the fundamental study of quantum mechanics and quantum technologies. Since the coupling between the microwave field and magnon Kittle modes in current experiments is much weaker than their resonant frequencies, the anti-rotating terms in magnon-microwave-photon interaction can be neglected and only the beam-splitter-like part takes effect. In this situation, the direct generation of magnonic nonclassical states is impossible, unless other subsystems e.g. phonons, squeezed photons or superconducting qubits are incorporated. In this paper, we consider two-tone modulated cavity electromagnonics to keep the nontrivial anti-rotating terms and obtain tunable phase factors, resulting in an effective Hamiltonian exactly the same as that of generic linearized cavity optomechanics. This can therefore be exploited to directly prepare macroscopic magnonic quantum states, as detailedly exemplified by the generation of steady and strongly squeezed and entangled states, realize ultra-sensitive magnon-based sensing by engineering backaction-evading interaction of magnons and photons, and develop spintronics-related quantum information processing devices.

Chirality-induced one-way quantum steering between two waveguide-mediated ferrimagnetic microspheres

One-way quantum steering is of importance for quantum technologies, such as secure quantum teleportation. In this paper, we study the generation of one-way quantum steering between two distant yttrium iron garnet (YIG) microspheres in chiral waveguide electromagonics. We consider that the magnon mode with the Kerr nonlinearity in each YIG sphere is chirally coupled to left- and right-propagating guided photons in the waveguide. We find that quantum steering between the magnon modes is absent with non-chirality but is present merely in the form of one way (i.e., one-way steering) when the chirality occurs. The maximal achievable steering is obviously improved as the chirality degree increases. We further find that when the waveguide's outputs are subjected to continuous homodyne detection, the steering can be considerably enhanced and asymmetric steering with strong entanglement can also be achieved by tuning the chirality. Our study shows that chirality can be explored to effectively realize one-way quantum steering. Compared to other studies on achieving asymmetric steering via controlling intrinsic dissipation, e.g. cavity loss rates, our scheme merely depends on the chirality enabled via positioning the micromagnets in the waveguide and is continuously adjustable and experimentally more feasible.

Remotely preparing optical Schrödinger cat states via homodyne detection in nondegenerate triple-photon spontaneous downconversion

Optical downconversion is a key resource for generating nonclassical states. Very recently, direct nondegenerate triple-photon spontaneous downconversion (NTPSD) with bright photon triplets and strong third-order correlations has been demonstrated in a superconducting device (2020 Phys. Rev. X 10 011011). Besides, linear and nonlinear tripartite entanglement in this process have also been predicted (2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 120 043601; 2020 Phys. Rev. Lett. 125 020502). In this paper, we consider the generation of nonclassical optical quantum superpositions and investigate nonlinear quantum steering effects in NTPSD.We find that large-size Schrödinger cat states of one downconverted mode can be achieved when the other two modes are subjected to homodyne detection. Also, a two-photon Bell entangled state can be generated when only one mode is homodyned. We further reveal that such ability of remote state steering originates from nonlinear quantum steerable correlations among the triplets. This is specifically embodied by the seeming violation of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation for the inferred variances of two noncommutating higher-order quadratures of downconverted modes, based on the outcomes of homodyne detection on the other mode, i.e., nonlinear quantum steering, compared to original EPR steering. Our results demonstrate non-Gaussian nonclassical features in NTPSD and would be useful for the fundamental tests of quantum physics and implementations of optical quantum technologies.

Long-time Bell states of waveguide-mediated qubits via continuous measurement

The generation of Bell states of distant objects is of importance for constructing quantum networks. Previous studies have revealed that transient or intermittent Bell states can be generated between remote qubits by exploiting time-continuous measurement on the environments of the systems, e.g., photon counting or homodyne detection. In this paper, we consider a new scheme for achieving long-time sustainable Bell states of two distant qubits mediated by a one-dimension waveguide via continuous photon counting and homodyne detection. In both of cases, different Bell states can be present for different initial states in the long-time regime. Specially, in the former case, we find that a cyclic jump among Bell states can be formed once the first photon is registered, and more interestingly in the latter case, any steady Bell state can be achieved independent of detection efficiency.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement and asymmetric steering between distant macroscopic mechanical and magnonic systems

We propose a deterministic scheme for establishing hybrid Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement channel between a macroscopic mechanical oscillator and a magnon mode in a distant yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) sphere across about ten gigahertz of frequency difference. The system consists of a driven electromechanical cavity which is unidirectionally coupled to a distant electromagnonical cavity inside which a YIG sphere is placed. We find that far beyond the sideband-resolved regime in the electromechanical subsystem, stationary phonon-magnon EPR entanglement can be achieved. This is realized by utilizing the output field of the electromechanical cavity being an intermediary which distributes the electromechanical entanglement to the magnons, thus establishing a remote phonon-magnon entanglement. The EPR entanglement is strong enough such that phonon-magnon quantum steering can be attainable in an asymmetric manner. This long-distance macroscopic hybrid EPR entanglement and steering enable potential applications not only in fundamental tests of quantum mechanics at the macro scale, but also in quantum networking and one-sided device-independent quantum cryptography based on magnonics and electromechanics.

Quantum-feedback-controlled macroscopic quantum nonlocality in cavity optomechanics

In this paper, we propose a continuous measurement and feedback scheme to achieve strong Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering and Bell nonlocality of two macroscopic mechanical oscillators in cavity optomechanics. Our system consists of two optomechanical cavities in which two cavity fields are coupled to each other via a nondegenerate parametric downconversion. The two cavity output fields are subject to continuous Bell-like homodyne detection and the detection currents are fed back to drive the cavity fields. It is found that when the feedback is absent, the two mechanical oscillators can only be prepared in steady weakly entangled states which however do not display EPR steering and Bell nonlocality, due to the so-called 3 dB limit. But when the feedback is present, it is found that the mechanical entanglement is considerably enhanced such that strong mechanical steering and Bell nonlocality can be obtained in the steady-state regime. We analytically reveal that this is because the feedback drives the mechanical oscillators into a steady approximate two-mode squeezed vacuum state, with arbitrary squeezing in principle. It is shown that the feedback can also obviously improve the purity of the nonclassical mechanical states. The dependences of the mechanical quantum nonlocality on the feedback strength and thermal fluctuations are studied, and it is found that Bell nonlocality is much more vulnerable to thermal noise than EPR steerable nonlocality.

Preparing macroscopic mechanical quantum superpositions via photon detection

In this paper, we propose a feasible scheme for generating the Schrödinger cat states of a macroscopic mechanical resonator in pulsed cavity optomechanics. Starting with cooling the mechanical oscillator to its ground state, a red and a blue pulses with different powers are simultaneously employed to drive the cavity to achieve squeezed mechanical states. Subsequently, a second red pulse is utilized to generate the macroscopic mechanical quantum superpositions, conditioned on the detection of cavity output photons. Finally, after being stored in the resonator for a period of time, the mechanical state is mapped, with a third red pulse, to the cavity output field used for state verification. Our approach is generic and can also be used to produce other kinds of non-Gaussian mechanical states, like optical-catalysis nonclassical states.

Steady-state one-way Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering in optomechanical interfaces

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is a form of quantum correlations and its intrinsic asymmetry makes it distinct from entanglement and Bell nonlocality. We propose here a scheme for realizing one-way Gaussian steering of two electromagnetic fields mediated by a mechanical oscillator. We reveal that the steady-state one-way steering of the intracavity and output fields is obtainable with different cavity losses or strong mechanical damping. The conditions for achieving this asymmetric steering are found, and it shows that the steering is robust against thermal mechanical fluctuations. The present scheme can realize hybrid microwave-optical asymmetric steering by optoelectromechanics. In addition, our results are generic and can also be applied to other three-mode parametrically-coupled bosonic systems.

Single-atom quantum control of macroscopic mechanical oscillators

We investigate a hybrid electro-mechanical system consisting of a pair of charged macroscopic mechanical oscillators coupled to a small ensemble of Rydberg atoms. The resonant dipole-dipole coupling between an internal atomic Rydberg transition and the mechanics allows cooling to its motional ground state with a single atom despite the considerable mass imbalance between the two subsystems. We show that the rich electronic spectrum of Rydberg atoms, combined with their high degree of optical control, paves the way towards implementing various quantum-control protocol for the mechanical oscillators.

Deterministic macroscopic quantum superpositions of motion via quadratic optomechanical coupling

We propose a scheme to prepare macroscopic quantum superpositions of motion in optomachanical nano- or micromechanical oscillators quadratically coupled to an intracavity field. The nonlinear optomechanical coupling leads to an effective degenerate three-wave mixing interaction between the mechanical and cavity modes. The quantum superpositions result from the combined effects of the interaction and cavity dissipation. We show analytically and confirm numerically that various deterministic quantum superpositions can be achieved, depending on initial mechanical state. The effect of mechanical damping is also studied in detail via the negativity of the Wigner function. The present scheme can be realized in various optomechanical systems with current technology.
