Exciton-Polariton hybrid skin-topological states

The non Hermitian skin effect, where bulk states accumulate at system boundaries, challenges the conventional bulk boundary correspondence. Here we propose a scheme to realize hybrid skin topological states in exciton polariton honeycomb lattices by introducing sublattice dependent gain and loss. This non Hermiticity couples with the intrinsic topological edge modes, leading to relocalization of edge states. We show two distinct regimes: hybrid skin Chern states with switchable localization controlled by TE TM splitting , and hybrid skin antichiral states which preserves the spin polarized property. Our results bridge polariton spin physics and non-Hermitian topology, opening routes toward controllable non reciprocal and spin polarized transport.

Spectroscopy on a single nonlinear mode recognizes quantum states

Characterising optical quantum states is essential for the development of quantum technologies. While traditional approaches to perform full quantum state tomography are often experimentally demanding, neuromorphic architectures may provide an effective alternative. In this work, we demonstrate how a quantum nonlinear driven-dissipative mode is sufficient to act as a quantum reservoir. By analyzing the occupations at different frequencies in the emission spectrum, a linear regression suffices in many cases to recognize the relevant parameters of incident squeezed states. Beyond highlighting the general potential of this approach under continuous driving, we illustrate its effectiveness in an explicit nontrivial example where the source is a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (OPO), coupled to a nonlinear polariton microcavity.

Quantum theory of polariton weak lasing and polarization bifurcations

The quantum theory of polariton condensation in a trapped state reveals a second-order phase transition evidenced by spontaneous polarization parity breaking in sub-spaces of fixed polariton occupation numbers. The emission spectra of a polariton condensate demonstrate the coexistence of a symmetry-conserving condensate state with {linear} polarization and two symmetry-broken elliptically polarized states in the vicinity of the threshold. As a result, an oscillating linearly polarized second-order coherence $g^{(2)}_{xx}(t)$, with $g^{(2)}_{xx}(t)<1$ over some time intervals is obtained. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is reflected in the second-order cross correlator of circular polarizations. A related build-up of elliptically-polarized weak lasing also results in non-monotonous dependence of the circular second-order coherence on excitation power and interaction strength.

Trembling Motion of Exciton-Polaritons Close to the Rashba-Dresselhaus Regime

We report the experimental emulation of trembling quantum motion, or Zitterbewegung, of exciton polaritons in a perovskite microcavity at room temperature. By introducing liquid crystal molecules into the microcavity, we achieve spinor states with synthetic Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and tunable energy splitting. Under a resonant excitation, the polariton fluid exhibits clear trembling motion perpendicular to its flowing direction, accompanied by a unique spin pattern resembling interlocked fingers. Furthermore, leveraging on the sizable tunability of energy gaps by external electrical voltages, we observe the continuous transition of polariton Zitterbewegung from relativistic (small gaps) to non-relativistic (large gaps) regimes. Our findings pave the way for using exciton polaritons in the emulation of relativistic quantum physics.

Topological enhancement of exciton-polariton coherence with non-Hermitian morphing

The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) has been intensely investigated over the past few years and has unveiled new topological phases, which have no counterparts in Hermitian systems. Here we consider the hybridization between the NHSE in an exciton-polariton waveguide and a localized defect mode. By tuning the non-Hermiticity, we find that the resulting ground-state of the system is both spatially extended and energetically separated from other modes in the system. When polariton lasing occurs in the system, we find an enhanced spatial coherence compared to regular waveguides, which is robust in the presence of disorder.

Topological Single Photon Emission from Quantum Emitter Chains

We develop a scheme of generating highly indistinguishable single photons from an active quantum Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain made from a collection of noisy quantum emitters. Surprisingly, the single photon emission spectrum of the active quantum chain is extremely narrow compared to that of a single emitter or topologically trivial chain. Moreover, this effect becomes dramatically strong close to the non-trivial-to-trivial phase transition point. Using this effect, we show that the single photon linewidth of a long topological quantum chain can become arbitrarily narrow, constituting an ideal source of indistinguishable single photons. Finally, taking specific examples of actual quantum emitters, we provide a microscopic and quantitative analysis of our model and analyze the most important parameters in view of the experimental realization.

Spin-polarized antichiral exciton-polariton edge states

We consider theoretically a system of exciton-polariton micropillars arranged in a honeycomb lattice. The naturally present TE-TM splitting and an alternating Zeeman splitting, where the different sublattices experience opposite Zeeman splitting, shifts the Dirac points in energy, giving rise to antichiral behavior. In a strip geometry having zigzag edges, two pairs of edge states exist and propagate in the same direction (including the states at the opposite edges). The edge modes localized at the opposite edges have opposite spins (circular polarizations), which leads to co-propagating "+-" spin channels. The antichiral edge states are protected by non-zero winding numbers and can propagate around a 60 degree bend without being reflected. We further compare the transport properties of these edge states with chiral edge modes and propose a scheme to realize them experimentally.

Non-reciprocal Exciton-Polariton Ring Lattices

Recent experiments have shown the transfer of orbital angular momentum (OAM) from a non-resonant laser onto an exciton-polariton condensate, despite earlier views that the phase information of such a laser should be lost during the process of polariton condensation. We study with a phenomenological theory the interplay of a usual angular momentum independent gain and an angular momentum preserving gain. We find that even when the latter is much smaller, it is enough to favour condensation into a given orbital angular momentum state. This further allows a breaking of symmetry in the system, which further manifests in non-reciprocal one-way propagation in a lattice of coupled rings. Even though we consider only Hermitian reciprocal coupling between rings, the local non-Hermiticity generates an effective non-reciprocal coupling and supports a non-Hermitian topological invariant (winding number) associated to a non-Hermitian skin effect.

The Roles of Kerr nonlinearity in a Bosonic Quantum Neural Network

The emerging technology of quantum neural networks (QNNs) attracts great attention from both the fields of machine learning and quantum physics with the capability to gain quantum advantage from an artificial neural network (ANN) system. Comparing to the classical counterparts, QNNs have been proven to be able to speed up the information processing, enhance the prediction or classification efficiency as well as offer versatile and experimentally friendly platforms. It is well established that Kerr nonlinearity is an indispensable element in a classical ANN, while, in a QNN, the roles of Kerr nonlinearity are not yet fully understood. In this work, we consider a bosonic QNN and investigate both classical (simulating an XOR gate) and quantum (generating Schrödinger cat states) tasks to demonstrate that the Kerr nonlinearity not only enables non-trivial tasks but also makes the system more robust to errors.

Superpolynomial Quantum Enhancement in Polaritonic Neuromorphic Computing

Recent proof-of-principle experiments have demonstrated the implementation of neuromorphic computing using exciton-polaritons, making use of coherent classical states [D. Ballarini et al., Nano Lett. 20, 3506 (2020)]. At the same time, it is expected that nonlinear exciton-polaritons can reach a quantum regime forming non-classical states. Here we consider theoretically the quantum nature of exciton polaritons and predict a superpolynomial quantum enhancement in image recognition tasks. This is achieved within experimentally accessible parameters.

Interaction induced bi-skin effect in an exciton-polariton system

The non-Hermitian skin effect can be realized through asymmetric hopping between forward and backward directions, where all the modes of the system are localized at one edge of a finite 1D lattice. However, achieving such an asymmetric hopping in optical systems is far from trivial. Here we show theoretically that in a finite chain of 1D exciton-polariton micropillars with symmetric hopping, the inherent non-linearity of the system can exhibit a bi-skin effect, where the modes of the system are localized at the two edges of the system. To show the topological origin of such modes, we calculate the winding number.
