Vortex Breit-Wheeler Electron-positron pair creation via vortex gamma-photons

Particles in quantum vortex states (QVS) carrying definite orbital angular momenta (OAM) brings new perspectives in various fundamental interaction processes. When unique properties arise in the QVS, understanding how OAM manifest itself between initial particles and the outcome in vortex particle collisions becomes essential. This is made possible by applying the complete vortex description for all involved particles such that angular momenta (AM) are represented by explicit quantum numbers and their connections are naturally retrieved. We demonstrate the full-vortex quantum-electrodynamics (QED) results for the Breit-Wheeler pair creation process and derive the AM-dependent selection rule. The numerically resolved cross-sections show anti-symmetric spin polarization and most importantly, the first OAM spectra in vortex collision processes. The latter reveals efficient conversion of OAM to created pairs, leading to featured hollow and ring-shaped structure in the density distribution. These results demonstrate a clear picture in understanding the OAM physics in the scattering processes of high energy particles.

Multi-channel Interference in Nonperturbative Multiphoton Pair Production by Gamma Rays Colliding

The electron-positron pair production in the collision of two intense gamma lasers is studied beyond the dipole approximation. The complete electron/positron momentum spectrum obtained by three-dimensional computation shows directly the multi-photon pair production channels and provides a sensitive test on the widely-used concept of the effective mass. Nonperturbative features are identified in the dependence of the total yield on the field intensity. In particular, various breaks in the momentum rings are observed and proved to be a manifestation of particle's energy gaps in the standing light wave induced by the Kapitza-Dirac scattering. A theoretical model of multi-level systems coupled by the Kapitza-Dirac scattering and pair production channels is established. Multi-channel interference effects and pair production suppression are revealed in these systems.

Seed and vacuum pair production in strong laser field

Researches on the electron-positron pair production in the presence of the intense laser field are reviewed, motivated by the theoretical importance of the nonperturbative QED problem and the worldwide development of the strong laser facilities. According to distinct experimental requirements and theoretical methods, two types of pair production are elaborated, which are respectively the pair production in the combination of a seed particle and the strong laser, and vacuum pair production without a seed particle. The origin of the nonperturbative problem caused by the strong field is analyzed. The main ideas, realization, achievements, validity, challenges and bottleneck problems of the nonperturbative methods developed for each type of the pair production problem are discussed.

Analytical solution for Klein-Gordon equation and action function of the solution for Dirac equation in counter-propagating laser waves

Nonperturbative calculation of QED processes participated by a strong electromagnetic field, especially provided by strong laser facilities at present and in the near future, generally resorts to the Furry picture with the usage of analytical solutions of the particle dynamical equation, such as the Klein-Gordon equation and Dirac equation. However only for limited field configurations such as a plane-wave field could the equations be solved analytically. Studies have shown significant interests in QED processes in a strong field composed of two counter-propagating laser waves, but the exact solutions in such a field is out of reach. In this paper, inspired by the observation of the structure of the solutions in a plane-wave field, we develop a new method and obtain the analytical solution for the Klein-Gordon equation and equivalently the action function of the solution for the Dirac equation in this field, under a largest dynamical parameter condition that there exists an inertial frame in which the particle free momentum is far larger than the other field dynamical parameters. The applicable range of the new solution is demonstrated and its validity is proven clearly. The result has the advantage of Lorentz covariance, clear structure and close similarity to the solution in a plane-wave field, and thus favors convenient application.

Modified light cone condition via vacuum polarization in a time dependent field

The appearance of unconventional vacuum properties in intense fields has long been an active field of research. In this paper the vacuum polarization effect is investigated via a pump probe scheme of a probe light propagating in the vacuum excited by two counter-propagating laser beams. The modified light cone condition of the probe light is derived analytically for the situation that it passes through the electric/magnetic antinode plane of the pump field. The derivation does not follow the commonly adopted assumption of treating the pump field as a constant field. Differences from the conventional light cone conditions are identified. The implications of the result are discussed with a consideration of the vacuum birefringence measurement.

Trident Pair Production in Colliding Bright X-ray Laser Beams

The magnificent development of strong X-ray lasers motivates the advancement of pair production process studies into higher laser frequency region. In this paper, a resonant electron-positron pair production process with the absorption of two X-ray photons is considered in the impact of an energetic electron at the overlap region of two colliding X-ray laser beams. Laser-dressed QED method is justified to tackle the complexity of the corresponding multiple Feynman diagrams calculation. The dependence of the production rate as well as the positron energy distribution on the relative angles among the directions of the two laser wave vectors and the incoming electron momentum is revealed. It is shown that the non-plane wave laser field configuration arouses novel features in the pair production process compared to the plane-wave case.

Relativistic three-body recombination with the QED vacuum

Electron-positron pair annihilation into a single photon is studied when a second free electron is present. Focussing on the relativistic regime, we show that the photon emitted in the three-lepton interaction may exhibit distinct angular distributions and polarization properties. Moreover, the process can dominate over two-photon annihilation in relativistic electron-positron plasmas of few-MeV temperature. An analogy with three-body recombination of electrons with ions is drawn.

Complete QED theory of multiphoton trident pair production in strong laser fields

Electron-positron pair creation by multiphoton absorption in the collision of a relativistic electron with a strong laser beam is calculated within laser-dressed quantum electrodynamics. Total production rates, positron spectra, and relative contributions of different reaction channels are obtained in various interaction regimes. We study the process in a manifestly nonperturbative domain which is shown accessible to future experiments utilizing the electron beamlines at novel x-ray laser facilities or all-optical setups based on laser acceleration. Our theory moreover allows us to add further insights into the experimental data from SLAC [D. Burke {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 79}, 1626 (1997)].

Non-perturbative QED Model with Dressed States to Tackle HHG in Ultrashort Intense Laser Pulses

A generalization of non-perturbative QED model for high harmonic generation is developed for the multi-mode optical field case. By introducing classical-field-dressed quantized Volkov states analytically, a formula to calculate HHG for hydrogen-like atom in ultrashort intense laser pulse is obtained, which has a simple intuitive interpretation. The dressed state QED model indicates a new perspective to understand HHG, for example, the presence of the weak even-order harmonic photons, which has been verified by both theoretical analysis and numerical computation. Long wavelength approximation and strong field approximation are involved in the development of the formalism.
