Bulk and boundary critical behaviour of thin and thick domain walls in the two-dimensional Potts model

The geometrical critical behaviour of the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model is usually studied in terms of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) clusters, or their surrounding loops. In this paper we study a quite different geometrical object: the spin clusters, defined as connected domains where the spin takes a constant value. Unlike the usual loops, the domain walls separating different spin clusters can cross and branch. Moreover, they come in two versions, "thin" or "thick", depending on whether they separate spin clusters of different or identical colours. For these reasons their critical behaviour is different from, and richer than, those of FK clusters. We develop a transfer matrix technique enabling the formulation and numerical study of spin clusters even when Q is not an integer. We further identify geometrically the crossing events which give rise to conformal correlation functions. We study the critical behaviour both in the bulk, and at a boundary with free, fixed, or mixed boundary conditions. This leads to infinite series of fundamental critical exponents, h_{l_1-l_2,2 l_1} in the bulk and h_{1+2(l_1-l_2),1+4 l_1} at the boundary, valid for 0 <= Q <= 4, that describe the insertion of l_1 thin and l_2 thick domain walls. We argue that these exponents imply that the domain walls are `thin' and `thick' also in the continuum limit. A special case of the bulk exponents is derived analytically from a massless scattering approach.

Critical exponents of domain walls in the two-dimensional Potts model

We address the geometrical critical behavior of the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model in terms of the spin clusters (i.e., connected domains where the spin takes a constant value). These clusters are different from the usual Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters, and are separated by domain walls that can cross and branch. We develop a transfer matrix technique enabling the formulation and numerical study of spin clusters even when Q is not an integer. We further identify geometrically the crossing events which give rise to conformal correlation functions. This leads to an infinite series of fundamental critical exponents h_{l_1-l_2,2 l_1}, valid for 0 </- Q </- 4, that describe the insertion of l_1 thin and l_2 thick domain walls.

Conformal field theory at central charge c=0: a measure of the indecomposability (b) parameters

A good understanding of conformal field theory (CFT) at c=0 is vital to the physics of disordered systems, as well as geometrical problems such as polymers and percolation. Steady progress has shown that these CFTs should be logarithmic, with indecomposable operator product expansions, and indecomposable representations of the Virasoro algebra. In one of the earliest papers on the subject, V. Gurarie introduced a single parameter b to quantify this indecomposability in terms of the logarithmic partner t of the stress energy tensor T. He and A. Ludwig conjectured further that b=-5/8 for polymers and b=5/6 for percolation. While a lot of physics may be hidden behind this parameter - which has also given rise to a lot of discussions - it had remained very elusive up to now, due to the lack of available methods to measure it experimentally or numerically, in contrast say with the central charge. We show in this paper how to overcome the many difficulties in trying to measure b. This requires control of a lattice scalar product, lattice Jordan cells, together with a precise construction of the state L_{-2}|0>. The final result is that b=5/6 for polymers. For percolation, we find that b=-5/8 within an XXZ or supersymmetric representation. In the geometrical representation, we do not find a Jordan cell for L_0 at level two (finite-size Hamiltonian and transfer matrices are fully diagonalizable), so there is no b in this case.

The $Z_2$ staggered vertex model and its applications

New solvable vertex models can be easily obtained by staggering the spectral parameter in already known ones. This simple construction reveals some surprises: for appropriate values of the staggering, highly non-trivial continuum limits can be obtained. The simplest case of staggering with period two (the $Z_2$ case) for the six-vertex model was shown to be related, in one regime of the spectral parameter, to the critical antiferromagnetic Potts model on the square lattice, and has a non-compact continuum limit. Here, we study the other regime: in the very anisotropic limit, it can be viewed as a zig-zag spin chain with spin anisotropy, or as an anyonic chain with a generic (non-integer) number of species. From the Bethe-Ansatz solution, we obtain the central charge $c=2$, the conformal spectrum, and the continuum partition function, corresponding to one free boson and two Majorana fermions. Finally, we obtain a massive integrable deformation of the model on the lattice. Interestingly, its scattering theory is a massive version of the one for the flow between minimal models. The corresponding field theory is argued to be a complex version of the $C_2^{(2)}$ Toda theory.

Exact solution of the anisotropic special transition in the O(n) model in 2D

The effect of surface exchange anisotropies is known to play a important role in magnetic critical and multicritical behavior at surfaces. We give an exact analysis of this problem in d=2 for the O(n) model by using Coulomb gas, conformal invariance and integrability techniques. We obtain the full set of critical exponents at the anisotropic special transition--where the symmetry on the boundary is broken down to O(n_1)xO(n-n_1)--as a function of n_1. We also obtain the full phase diagram and crossover exponents. Crucial in this analysis is a new solution of the boundary Yang-Baxter equations for loop models. The appearance of the generalization of Schramm-Loewner Evolution SLE_{κ,ρ} is also discussed.

The Sigma Model on Complex Projective Superspaces

The sigma model on complex projective superspaces CP^{S-1|S} gives rise to a continuous family of interacting 2D conformal field theories which are parametrized by the curvature radius R and the theta angle θ. Our main goal is to determine the spectrum of the model, non-perturbatively as a function of both parameters. We succeed to do so for all open boundary conditions preserving the full global symmetry of the model. In string theory parlor, these correspond to volume filling branes that are equipped with a monopole line bundle and connection. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we approach the problem within the continuum formulation. Combining combinatorial arguments with perturbative studies and some simple free field calculations, we determine a closed formula for the partition function of the theory. This is then tested numerically in the second part. There we propose a spin chain regularization of the CP^{S-1|S} model with open boundary conditions and use it to determine the spectrum at the conformal fixed point. The numerical results are in remarkable agreement with the continuum analysis.

A Temperley-Lieb quantum chain with two- and three-site interactions

We study a quantum chain of spin-1/2 particles whose world lines form a loop gas. In addition to the usual interaction that projects a pair of neighboring spins onto quantum-group spin 0, we introduce a three-site interaction that projects onto spin 3/2. Changing the relative strengths of these interactions leads to a rich phase diagram containing gapped and critical phases, and exactly solvable points. For loop weight $n=2 \cos [π/(p+1)]$, the model corresponds to N=p-3 species of interacting anyons, of which only the Fibonacci case N=1 was studied previously. Our study applies to real n, and provides further exact results which were unnoticed even for the special case N=1.

Conformal boundary conditions in the critical O(n) model and dilute loop models

We study the conformal boundary conditions of the dilute O(n) model in two dimensions. A pair of mutually dual solutions to the boundary Yang-Baxter equations are found. They describe anisotropic special transitions, and can be interpreted in terms of symmetry breaking interactions in the O(n) model. We identify the corresponding boundary condition changing operators, Virasoro characters, and conformally invariant partition functions. We compute the entropies of the conformal boundary states, and organize the flows between the various boundary critical points in a consistent phase diagram. The operators responsible for the various flows are identified. Finally, we discuss the relation to open boundary conditions in the O(n) model, and present new crossing probabilities for Ising domain walls.

Conformal two-boundary loop model on the annulus

We study the two-boundary extension of a loop model - corresponding to the dense phase of the O(n) model, or to the Q=n^2 state Potts model - in the critical regime -2 < n < 2. This model is defined on an annulus of aspect ratio τ. Loops touching the left, right, or both rims of the annulus are distinguished by arbitrary (real) weights which moreover depend on whether they wrap the periodic direction. Any value of these weights corresponds to a conformally invariant boundary condition. We obtain the exact seven-parameter partition function in the continuum limit, as a function of τ, by a combination of algebraic and field theoretical arguments. As a specific application we derive some new crossing formulae for percolation clusters.

Universal sub-leading terms in ground state fidelity

The study of the (logarithm of the) {\em fidelity} i.e., of the overlap amplitude, between ground states of Hamiltonians corresponding to different coupling constants, provides a valuable insight on critical phenomena. When the parameters are infinitesimally close, it is known that the leading term behaves as $O(L^α)$ ($L$ system size) where $α$ is equal to the spatial dimension $d$ for gapped systems, and otherwise depends on the critical exponents. Here we show that when parameters are changed along a critical manifold, a sub-leading O(1) term can appear. This term, somewhat similar to the topological entanglement entropy, depends only on the system's universality class and encodes non-trivial information about the topology of the system. We relate it to universal $g$ factors and partition functions of (boundary) conformal field theory in $d=1$ and $d=2$ dimensions. Numerical checks are presented on the simple example of the XXZ chain.

Friedel oscillations and the Kondo screening cloud

We show that the long distance charge density oscillations in a metal induced by a weakly coupled spin-1/2 magnetic impurity exhibiting the Kondo effect are given, at zero temperature, by a universal function F(r/xi_K) where r is the distance from the impurity and xi_K, the Kondo screening cloud size =v_F/T_K, where v_F is the Fermi velocity and T_K is the Kondo temperature. F is given by a Fourier-like transform of the T-matrix. Analytic expressions for F(r/xi_K) are derived in both limits r much less than xi_K and r much greater than xi_K and F is calculated for all r/xi_K using numerical methods.

Boundary chromatic polynomial

We consider proper colorings of planar graphs embedded in the annulus, such that vertices on one rim can take Q_s colors, while all remaining vertices can take Q colors. The corresponding chromatic polynomial is related to the partition function of a boundary loop model. Using results for the latter, the phase diagram of the coloring problem (with real Q and Q_s) is inferred, in the limits of two-dimensional or quasi one-dimensional infinite graphs. We find in particular that the special role played by Beraha numbers Q=4 cos^2(pi/n) for the usual chromatic polynomial does not extend to the case Q different from Q_s. The agreement with (scarce) existing numerical results is perfect; further numerical checks are presented here.

Combinatorial aspects of boundary loop models

We discuss in this paper combinatorial aspects of boundary loop models, that is models of self-avoiding loops on a strip where loops get different weights depending on whether they touch the left, the right, both or no boundary. These models are described algebraically by a generalization of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, dubbed the two-boundary TL algebra. We give results for the dimensions of TL representations and the corresponding degeneracies in the partition functions. We interpret these results in terms of fusion and in the light of the recently uncovered A_n large symmetry present in loop models, paving the way for the analysis of the conformal field theory properties. Finally, we propose conjectures for determinants of Gram matrices in all cases, including the two-boundary one, which has recently been discussed by de Gier and Nichols.

A lattice approach to the conformal $\OSp(2S+2|2S)$ supercoset sigma model. Part II: The boundary spectrum

We consider the partition function of the boundary $OSp(2S+2|2S)$ coset sigma model on an annulus, based on the lattice regularization introduced in the companion paper. Using results for the action of $OSp(2S+2|2S)$ and $B_L(2)$ on the corresponding spin chain, as well as mini-superspace and small $g_σ^2$ calculations, we conjecture the full spectrum and set of degeneracies on the entire critical line. Potential relationship with the $OSp(2S+2|2S)$ Gross-Neveu model is also discussed.

A lattice approach to the conformal $\OSp(2S+2|2S)$ supercoset sigma model. Part I: Algebraic structures in the spin chain. The Brauer algebra

We define and study a lattice model which we argue is in the universality class of the $OSp(2S+2|2S)$ supercoset sigma model for a large range of values of the coupling constant $g_σ^2$. In this first paper, we analyze in details the symmetries of this lattice model, in particular the decomposition of the space of the quantum spin chain $V^{\otimes L}$ as a bimodule over $OSp(2S+2|2S)$ and its commutant, the Brauer algebra $B_L(2)$. It turns out that $V^{\otimes L}$ is a nonsemisimple module for both $OSp(2S+2|2S)$ and $B_L(2)$. The results are used in the companion paper to elucidate the structure of the (boundary) conformal field theory.

Exact valence bond entanglement entropy and probability distribution in the XXX spin chain and the Potts model

By relating the ground state of Temperley-Lieb hamiltonians to partition functions of 2D statistical mechanics systems on a half plane, and using a boundary Coulomb gas formalism, we obtain in closed form the valence bond entanglement entropy as well as the valence bond probability distribution in these ground states. We find in particular that for the XXX spin chain, the number N_c of valence bonds connecting a subsystem of size L to the outside goes, in the thermodynamic limit, as = (4/pi^2) ln L, disproving a recent conjecture that this should be related with the von Neumann entropy, and thus equal to 1/(3 ln 2) ln L. Our results generalize to the Q-state Potts model.

Entanglement Entropy in the Two-Dimensional Random Transverse Field Ising Model

The scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy in the two-dimensional random transverse field Ising model is studied numerically through the strong disordered renormalization group method. We find that the leading term of the entanglement entropy always scales linearly with the block size. However, besides this \emph{area law} contribution, we find a subleading logarithmic correction at the quantum critical point. This correction is discussed from the point of view of an underlying percolation transition, both at finite and at zero temperature.

Conformal boundary loop models

We study a model of densely packed self-avoiding loops on the annulus, related to the Temperley Lieb algebra with an extra idempotent boundary generator. Four different weights are given to the loops, depending on their homotopy class and whether they touch the outer rim of the annulus. When the weight of a contractible bulk loop x = q + 1/q satisfies -2 < x <= 2, this model is conformally invariant for any real weight of the remaining three parameters. We classify the conformal boundary conditions and give exact expressions for the corresponding boundary scaling dimensions. The amplitudes with which the sectors with any prescribed number and types of non contractible loops appear in the full partition function Z are computed rigorously. Based on this, we write a number of identities involving Z which hold true for any finite size. When the weight of a contractible boundary loop y takes certain discrete values, y_r = [r+1]_q / [r]_q with r integer, other identities involving the standard characters K_{r,s} of the Virasoro algebra are established. The connection with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in the O(n) model is discussed in detail, and new scaling dimensions are derived. When q is a root of unity and y = y_r, exact connections with the A_m type RSOS model are made. These involve precise relations between the spectra of the loop and RSOS model transfer matrices, valid in finite size. Finally, the results where y=y_r are related to the theory of Temperley Lieb cabling.
