Isovector and flavor-diagonal charges of the nucleon

We present an update on the status of the calculations of isovector and flavor-diagonal charges of the nucleon. The calculations of the isovector charges are being done using ten $2+1+1$-flavor HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration covering the range of lattice spacings $a \approx$ 0.12, 0.09, 0.06 fm and pion masses $M_π\approx$ 310, 220, 130 MeV. Excited-states contamination is controlled by using four-state fits to two-point correlators and three-states fits to the three-point correlators. The calculations of the disconnected diagrams needed to estimate flavor-diagonal charges are being done on a subset of six ensembles using the stocastic method. Final results are obtained using a simultaneous fit in $M_π^2$, the lattice spacing $a$ and the finite volume parameter $M_πL$ keeping only the leading order corrections.

Nucleon Axial and Electromagnetic Form Factors

We present results for the isovector axial, induced pseudoscalar, electric, and magnetic form factors of the nucleon. The calculations were done using $2+1+1$-flavor HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration with lattice spacings $a \approx$ 0.12, 0.09, 0.06$\mathrm{fm}$ and pion masses $M_π\approx$ 310, 220, 130$\mathrm{MeV}$. Excited-states contamination is controlled by using four-state fits to two-point correlators and by comparing two- versus three-states in three-point correlators. The $Q^2$ behavior is analyzed using the model independent z-expansion and the dipole ansatz. Final results for the charge radii and magnetic moment are obtained using a simultaneous fit in $M_π$, lattice spacing $a$ and finite volume.

The PDFLattice2017 workshop: a summary report

The workshop on Parton Distributions and Lattice Calculations in the LHC era (PDFLattice2017) was hosted at Balliol College, Oxford (UK), from 22$^{\rm nd}$ to 24$^{\rm th}$ March 2017. The workshop brought together the lattice-QCD and the global-fit physicists who devote their efforts to determine the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. The goals were to make the two communities more familiar between each other, review developments from both sides, and set precision targets for lattice calculations so that they can contribute, together with the forthcoming experimental input, to the next generation of PDF determinations. This contribution summarises the relevant outcome of the workshop, in anticipation of a thorough white paper.

Improved Parton Distribution Functions at Physical Pion Mass

We present the first lattice results on isovector unpolarized and longitudinally polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) at physical pion mass. The PDFs are obtained using the large-momentum effective field theory (LaMET) framework where the full Bjorken-$x$ dependence of finite-momentum PDFs, called "quasi-PDFs", can be calculated on the lattice. The quasi-PDF nucleon matrix elements are renormalized nonperturbatively in RI/MOM-scheme. However, the recent renormalized quasi-PDFs suffer from unphysical oscillations that alter the shape of the true distribution as a function of Bjorken-$x$. In this paper, we propose two possible solutions to overcome this problem, and demonstrate the efficacy of the methods on the 2+1+1-flavor lattice data at physical pion mass with lattice spacing 0.09~fm and volume $(5.76\mbox{ fm})^3$.

Axial Vector Form Factors of the Nucleon from Lattice QCD

We present results for the form factors of the isovector axial vector current in the nucleon state using large scale simulations of lattice QCD. The calculations were done using eight ensembles of gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration using the HISQ action with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors. These ensembles span three lattice spacings $a \approx 0.06, 0.09$ and $0.12$ fm and light-quark masses corresponding to the pion masses $M_π\approx 135, 225$ and $310$ MeV. High-statistics estimates allow us to quantify systematic uncertainties in the extraction of $G_A(Q^2)$ and the induced pseudoscalar form factor $\tilde{G}_P(Q^2)$. We perform a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, lattice volume and light-quark masses of the axial charge radius $r_A$ data to obtain physical estimates. Using the dipole ansatz to fit the $Q^2$ behavior we obtain $r_A|_{\rm dipole} = 0.49(3)$ fm, which corresponds to ${\cal M}_A = 1.39(9)$ GeV, and is consistent with ${\cal M}_A = 1.35(17)$ GeV obtained by the miniBooNE collaboration. The estimate obtained using the $z$-expansion is $r_A|_{z-{\rm expansion}} = 0.46(6)$ fm, and the combined result is $r_A|_{\rm combined} = 0.48(4)$ fm. Analysis of the induced pseudoscalar form factor $\tilde{G}_P(Q^2)$ yields low estimates for $g_P^\ast$ and $g_{π{\rm NN}}$ compared to their phenomenological values. To understand these, we analyze the partially conserved axial current (PCAC) relation by also calculating the pseudoscalar form factor. We find that these low values are due to large deviations in the PCAC relation between the three form factors and from the pion-pole dominance hypothesis.

Pion Distribution Amplitude from Lattice QCD

We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the pion distribution amplitude using the large- momentum effective field theory (LaMET) approach, which allows us to extract lightcone parton observables from a Euclidean lattice. The mass corrections needed to extract the pion distribution amplitude from this approach are calculated to all orders in $m^2_π /P_z^2$. We also implement the Wilson- line renormalization which is crucial to remove the power divergences in this approach, and find that it reduces the oscillation at the end points of the distribution amplitude. Our exploratory result at 310-MeV pion mass favors a single-hump form broader than the asymptotic form of the pion distribution amplitude.

Isovector charges of the nucleon from 2+1-flavor QCD with clover fermions

We present high-statistics estimates of the isovector charges of the nucleon from four 2+1-flavor ensembles generated using Wilson-clover fermions with stout smearing and tree-level tadpole improved Symanzik gauge action at lattice spacings $a=0.114$ and $0.080$ fm and with $M_π\approx 315$ and 200 MeV. The truncated solver method with bias correction and the coherent source sequential propagator construction are used to cost-effectively achieve $O(10^5)$ measurements on each ensemble. Using these data, the analysis of two-point correlation functions is extended to include four states in the fits and of three-point functions to three states. Control over excited-state contamination in the calculation of the nucleon mass, the mass gaps between excited states, and in the matrix elements is demonstrated by the consistency of estimates using this multistate analysis of the spectral decomposition of the correlation functions and from simulations of the three-point functions at multiple values of the source-sink separation. The results for all three charges, $g_A$, $g_S$ and $g_T$, are in good agreement with calculations done using the clover-on-HISQ lattice formulation with similar values of the lattice parameters.

Controlling Excited-State Contamination in Nucleon Matrix Elements

We present a detailed analysis of methods to reduce statistical errors and excited-state contamination in the calculation of matrix elements of quark bilinear operators in nucleon states. All the calculations were done on a 2+1 flavor ensemble with lattices of size $32^3 \times 64$ generated using the rational hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm at $a=0.081$~fm and with $M_π=312$ MeV. The statistical precision of the data is improved using the all-mode-averaging method. We compare two methods for reducing excited-state contamination: a variational analysis and a two-state fit to data at multiple values of the source-sink separation $t_{\rm sep}$. We show that both methods can be tuned to significantly reduce excited-state contamination and discuss their relative advantages and cost-effectiveness. A detailed analysis of the size of source smearing used in the calculation of quark propagators and the range of values of $t_{\rm sep}$ needed to demonstrate convergence of the isovector charges of the nucleon to the $t_{\rm sep} \to \infty $ estimates is presented.

Axial, Scalar and Tensor Charges of the Nucleon from 2+1+1-flavor Lattice QCD

We present results for the isovector axial, scalar and tensor charges $g^{u-d}_A$, $g^{u-d}_S$ and $g^{u-d}_T$ of the nucleon needed to probe the Standard Model and novel physics. The axial charge is a fundamental parameter describing the weak interactions of nucleons. The scalar and tensor charges probe novel interactions at the TeV scale in neutron and nuclear $β$-decays, and the flavor-diagonal tensor charges $g^{u}_T$, $g^{d}_T$ and $g^{s}_T$ are needed to quantify the contribution of the quark electric dipole moment (EDM) to the neutron EDM. The 9 ensembles, generated by the MILC Collaboration using the HISQ action with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors, span three lattice spacings $a \approx 0.06, 0.09$ and 0.12 fm and light-quark masses corresponding to the pion masses $M_π\approx 135, 225$ and 315 MeV. High-statistics estimates on five ensembles using the all-mode-averaging method allow us to quantify all systematic uncertainties and perform a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, lattice volume and light-quark masses for the connected contributions. Our final estimates, in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme at 2 GeV, of the isovector charges are $g_A^{u-d} = 1.195(33)(20)$, $g_S^{u-d} = 0.97(12)(6) $ and $g_T^{u-d} = 0.987(51)(20)$. The first error includes statistical and all systematic uncertainties except that due to the extrapolation Ansatz, which is given by the second error estimate. Combining our estimate for $g_S^{u-d}$ with the difference of light quarks masses $(m_d-m_u)^{\rm QCD}=2.67(35)$ MeV given by FLAG, we obtain $(M_N-M_P)^{\rm QCD} = 2.59(49)$ MeV. Estimates of the connected part of the flavor-diagonal tensor charges of the proton are $g^{u}_T=0.792(42)$ and $g^{d}_T=-0.194(14)$. Combining our new estimates with precision low-energy experiments, we update constraints on novel scalar and tensor interactions, $ε_{S,T}$, at the TeV scale.

From C to Parton Sea: Bjorken-x Dependence of the PDFs

Studying the structure of nucleons is not only important to understanding the strong interactions of quarks and gluons, but also to improving the precision of new-physics searches. Since a broad class of experiments, including the LHC and dark-matter detection, require Standard-Model backgrounds with parton distribution functions (PDFs) as inputs for disentangling SM contributions from potential new physics. For a long time, lattice calculations of the PDFs (as well as many hadron structures) has been limited to the first few moments. In this talk, we present a first direct calculation of the Bjorken-x dependence of the PDFs using Large-Momentum Effective Theory (LaMET). An exploratory study of the antiquark/sea flavor asymmetry of these distributions will be discussed. This breakthrough opens an exciting new frontier calculating more complicated quantities, such as gluon structure and transverse-momentum dependence, which will complement existing theoretical programs for the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) or Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC).

Nucleon Helicity and Transversity Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD

We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the isovector polarized parton distribution functions (both helicity and transversity) using the large-momentum effective field theory (LaMET) approach for direct Bjorken-$x$ dependence. We first review the detailed steps of the procedure in the unpolarized case, then generalize to the helicity and transversity cases. We also derive a new mass-correction formulation for all three cases. We then compare the effects of each finite-momentum correction using lattice data calculated at $M_π\approx 310$ MeV. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results for the poorly known antiquark structure and predict the sea-flavor asymmetry in the transversely polarized nucleon.

Nucleon Charges, Form-factors and Neutron EDM

We present an update of our analysis of statistical and systematic errors in the calculation of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges of the nucleon. The calculations are done using $N_f=2+1+1$ flavor HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC Collaboration at three values of the lattice spacing ($a=0.12,\ 0.09,$ and $0.06$ fm) and three values of the quark mass ($M_π\approx 310,\ 220$ and $130$ MeV); and clover fermions for calculating the correlation functions, i.e., we use a clover-on-HISQ lattice formulation. The all-mode-averaging method allows us to increase the statistics by a factor of eight for the same computational cost leading to a better understanding of and control over excited state contamination. Our current results, after extrapolation to the continuum limit and physical pion mass are $g_A^{u-d} = 1.21(3)$, $g_T^{u-d} = 1.005(59)$ and $g_S^{u-d} = 0.95(12) $. Further checks of control over all systematic errors, especially in $g_A^{u-d}$, are still being performed. Using results for the flavor-diagonal charges, $g_T^{u} $, $g_T^{d} $ and $g_T^{s}$, we analyze contributions of the quark electric dipole moment to the neutron EDM and the consequences for split SUSY model.

Iso-vector and Iso-scalar Tensor Charges of the Nucleon from Lattice QCD

We present results for the iso-vector and flavor diagonal tensor charges $g^{u-d}_T$, $g^{u}_T$, $g^{d}_T$, and $g^{s}_T$ needed to probe novel tensor interactions at the TeV scale in neutron and nuclear $β$-decays and the contribution of the quark electric dipole moment (EDM) to the neutron EDM. The lattice QCD calculations were done using nine ensembles of gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration using the HISQ action with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors. These ensembles span three lattice spacings $a \approx 0.06, 0.09$ and $0.12 $ fm and three quark masses corresponding to the pion masses $M_π\approx 130, 220$ and $310 $ MeV. Using estimates from these ensembles, we quantify all systematic uncertainties and perform a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, volume and light quark masses for the connected contributions. The final estimates of the connected nucleon (proton) tensor charge for the iso-vector combination is $g_T^{u-d} = 1.020(76) $ in the $\bar{\text{MS}}$ scheme at $2$ GeV. The additional disconnected quark loop contributions needed for the flavor-diagonal matrix elements are calculated using a stochastic estimator employing the truncated solver method with the all-mode-averaging technique. We find that the size of the disconnected contribution is smaller than the statistical error in the connected contribution. This allows us to bound the disconnected contribution and include it as an additional uncertainty in the flavor-diagonal charges. After a continuum extrapolation, we find $g_T^{u} = 0.774(66) $, $g_T^{d} = -0.233(28) $ and $g_T^{u+d} = 0.541(67) $. The strangeness tensor charge, that can make a significant contribution to the neutron EDM due to the large ratio $m_s/m_{u,d}$, is $g_T^{s}=0.008(9)$ in the continuum limit.

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment and Tensor Charges from Lattice QCD

We present Lattice QCD results on the neutron tensor charges including, for the first time, a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, volume, and light quark masses to the physical point in the continuum limit. We find that the "disconnected" contribution is smaller than the statistical error in the "connected" contribution. Our estimates in the $\bar{\text{MS}}$ scheme at $2$ GeV, including all systematics, are $g_T^{d-u}=1.020(76)$, $g_T^d = 0.774(66)$, $g_T^u = - 0.233(28)$, and $g_T^s = 0.008(9)$. The flavor diagonal charges determine the size of the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) induced by quark EDMs that are generated in many new scenarios of CP-violation beyond the Standard Model (BSM). We use our results to derive model-independent bounds on the EDMs of light quarks and update the EDM phenomenology in split Supersymmetry with gaugino mass unification, finding a stringent upper bound of $d_n < 4 \times 10^{-28} \, e$ cm for the neutron EDM in this scenario.

Flavor Structure of the Nucleon Sea from Lattice QCD

We present the first direct lattice calculation of the isovector sea-quark parton distributions using the formalism developed recently by one of the authors. We use $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ lattice gauge ensembles (generated by MILC Collaboration) and clover valence fermions with pion mass 310 MeV. We are able to obtain the qualitative features of the nucleon sea flavor structure even at this large pion mass: We observe violation of the Gottfried sum rule, indicating $\overline{d}(x) > \overline{u}(x)$; the helicity distribution obeys $Δ\overline{u}(x) > Δ\overline{d}(x)$, which is consistent with the STAR data at large and small leptonic pseudorapidity.

Precision calculations of nucleon charges $g_A$, $g_S$, $g_T$

We present a detailed analysis of statistical and systematic errors in the calculation of matrix elements of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges between a neutron and a proton state. These analyses are being done on dynamical $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration using valence clover fermions. Using ensembles at three values of the lattice spacing ($a=0.12,\ 0.09,$ and $0.06$ fm) and three values of the quark mass ($M_π\approx 310,\ 220$ and $130$ MeV) we find that the estimates of the tensor charge are stable and it can be extracted with $5\%$ precision with O(10,000) measurements. We also find that higher statistics are needed to resolve the various uncertainties in the calculation of $g_A$ and improve the signal in $g_S$, which with present data has large errors. A brief status report on the mixing and renormalization of novel operators contributing to nEDM is also given.

Nucleon Charges and Electromagnetic Form Factors from 2+1+1-Flavor Lattice QCD

We present lattice-QCD results on the nucleon isovector axial, scalar and tensor charges, the isovector electromagnetic Dirac and Pauli form factors, and the connected parts of the isoscalar charges. The calculations have been done using two ensembles of HISQ lattices generated by the MILC Collaboration with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors at a lattice spacing of 0.12 fm and with light-quark masses corresponding to pions with masses 310 and 220 MeV. We perform a systematic study including excited-state degrees of freedom and examine the dependence of the extracted nucleon matrix elements on source-sink separation. This study demonstrates with high-statistics data that including excited-state contributions and generating data at multiple separations is necessary to remove contamination that would otherwise lead to systematic error. We also determine the renormalization constants of the associated quark bilinear operators in the RI-sMOM scheme and make comparisons of our renormalized results with previous dynamical-lattice calculations.
