On localization of universal scalar fields in a tachyonic de Sitter thick braneworld

Braneworld models may yield interesting effects ranging from high-energy physics to cosmology, or even some low-energy physics. Their mode structure modifies standard results in these physical realms that can be tested and used to set bounds on the models parameters. Now, to define braneworld deviations from standard 4D physics, a notion of matter and gravity localization on the brane is crucial. In this work we investigate the localization of universal massive scalar fields in a de Sitter thick tachyonic braneworld generated by gravity coupled to a tachyonic bulk scalar field. This braneworld possesses a 4D de Sitter induced metric and is asymptotically flat despite the presence of a negative bulk cosmological constant, a novel and interesting peculiarity that contrasts with previously known models. Universal scalar fields can be localized in this expanding braneworld if their bulk mass obeys an upper bound, otherwise they delocalize: The dynamics of the scalar field is governed by a Schroedinger equation with an analog quantum mechanical potential of modified Poeschl-Teller type that depends on the bulk curvature of the braneworld system and the value of the bulk scalar field mass. For masses satisfying a certain upper bound, the potential displays a negative minimum and possesses a single massless bound state separated from the Kaluza-Klein (KK) massive modes by a mass gap defined by the Hubble (expansion scale) parameter of the 3-brane. As the bulk scalar field mass increases, the minimum of the quantum mechanical potential approaches a null value and, eventually, it becomes positive, transforming into a potential barrier and leading to delocalization of the bulk scalar field from the brane. The general solution of the Schroedinger equation is given in terms of general Heun functions, giving rise to a new application of these special functions.

High-order quantum back-reaction and quantum cosmology with a positive cosmological constant

When quantum back-reaction by fluctuations, correlations and higher moments of a state becomes strong, semiclassical quantum mechanics resembles a dynamical system with a high-dimensional phase space. Here, systematic computational methods to derive the dynamical equations including all quantum corrections to high order in the moments are introduced, together with a (deparameterized) quantum cosmological example to illustrate some implications. The results show, for instance, that the Gaussian form of an initial state is maintained only briefly, but that the evolving state settles down to a new characteristic shape afterwards. Remarkably, even in the regime of large high-order moments, we observe a strong convergence within all considered orders that supports the use of this effective approach.

Casimir force in brane worlds: coinciding results from Green's and Zeta function approaches

Casimir force encodes the structure of the field modes as vacuum fluctuations and so it is sensitive to the extra dimensions of brane worlds. Now, in flat spacetimes of arbitrary dimension the two standard approaches to the Casimir force, Green's function and zeta function, yield the same result, but for brane world models this was only assumed. In this work we show both approaches yield the same Casimir force in the case of Universal Extra Dimensions and Randall-Sundrum scenarios with one and two branes added by p compact dimensions. Essentially, the details of the mode eigenfunctions that enter the Casimir force in the Green's function approach get removed due to their orthogonality relations with a measure involving the right hyper-volume of the plates and this leaves just the contribution coming from the Zeta function approach. The present analysis corrects previous results showing a difference between the two approaches for the single brane Randall-Sundrum; this was due to an erroneous hyper-volume of the plates introduced by the authors when using the Green's function. For all the models we discuss here, the resulting Casimir force can be neatly expressed in terms of two four dimensional Casimir force contributions: one for the massless mode and the other for a tower of massive modes associated with the extra dimensions.

On the Manifestly Covariant Juttner Distribution and Equipartition Theorem

The relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution plays a key role in describing several high-energy and astrophysical effects. Recently, computer simulations favored Juttner's as the relativistic generalization of Maxwell's distribution for d=1,2,3 spatial dimensions and pointed to an invariant temperature. In this work we argue an invariant temperature naturally follows from manifest covariance. We present a new derivation of the manifestly covariant Juttner's distribution and Equipartition Theorem. The standard procedure to get the equilibrium distribution as a solution of the relativistic Boltzmann's equation is here adopted. However, contrary to previous analysis, we use cartesian coordinates in d+1 momentum space, with d spatial components. The use of the multiplication theorem of Bessel functions turns crucial to regain the known invariant form of Juttner's distribution. Since equilibrium kinetic theory results should agree with thermodynamics in the comoving frame to the gas the covariant pseudo-norm of a vector entering the distribution can be identified with the reciprocal of temperature in such comoving frame. Then by combining the covariant statistical moments of Juttner's distribution a novel form of the Equipartition Theorem is advanced which also accommodates the invariant comoving temperature and it contains, as a particular case, a previous not manifestly covariant form.

Brane world corrections to scalar vacuum force in RSII-p

Vacuum force is an interesting low energy test for brane worlds due to its dependence on field's modes and its role in submillimeter gravity experiments. In this work we generalize a previous model example: the scalar field vacuum force between two parallel plates lying in the brane of a Randall-Sundrum scenario extended by $p$ compact dimensions (RSII-$p$). Upon use of Green's function technique, for the massless scalar field, the 4D force is obtained from a zero mode while corrections turn out attractive and depend on the separation between plates as $l^{-(6+p)}$. For the massive scalar field a quasilocalized mode yields the 4D force with attractive corrections behaving like $l^{-(10+p)}$. Corrections are negligible w.r.t. 4D force for $AdS_{(5+p)}$ radius less than $\sim 10^{-6}$m. Although the $p=0$ case is not physically viable due to the different behavior in regard to localization for the massless scalar and electromagnetic fields it yields an useful comparison between the dimensional regularization and Green's function techniques as we describe in the discussion.

Casimir force for a scalar field in warped brane worlds

In looking for imprints of extra dimensions in brane world models one usually builts these so that they are compatible with known low energy physics and thus focuses on high energy effects. Nevertheless, just as submillimeter Newton's law tests probe the mode structure of gravity other low energy tests might apply to matter. As a model example, in this work we determine the 4D Casimir force corresponding to a scalar field subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on two parallel planes lying within the single brane of a Randall-Sundrum scenario extended by one compact extra dimension. Using the Green's function method such a force picks the contribution of each field mode as if it acted individually but with a weight given by the square of the mode wave functions on the brane. In the low energy regime one regains the standard 4D Casimir force that is associated to a zero mode in the massless case or to a quasilocalized or resonant mode in the massive one whilst the effect of the extra dimensions gets encoded as an additional term.

Casimir effect in a six-dimensional vortex scenario

Recently Randjbar-Daemi and Shaposhnikov put forward a 4-dimensional effective QED coming from a Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution of the abelian Higgs model with fermions coupled to gravity in D=6. However, exploring possible physical consequences of such an effective QED was left open. In this letter we study the corresponding effective Casimir effect. We find that the extra dimensions yield fifth and third inverse powers in the separation between plates for the modified Casimir force which are in conflict with known experiments, thus reducing the phenomenological viability of the model.

On Loop Quantum Gravity Phenomenology and the Issue of Lorentz Invariance

A simple model is constructed which allows to compute modified dispersion relations with effects from loop quantum gravity. Different quantization choices can be realized and their effects on the order of corrections studied explicitly. A comparison with more involved semiclassical techniques shows that there is agreement even at a quantitative level. Furthermore, by contrasting Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions we show that possible Lorentz symmetry violations may be blurred as an artifact of the approximation scheme. Whether this is the case in a purely Hamiltonian analysis can be resolved by an improvement in the effective semiclassical analysis.

On alternative approaches to Lorentz violation in loop quantum gravity inspired models

Recent claims point out that possible violations of Lorentz symmetry appearing in some semiclassical models of extended matter dynamics motivated by loop quantum gravity can be removed by a different choice of canonically conjugated variables. In this note we show that such alternative is inconsistent with the choice of variables in the underlying quantum theory together with the semiclassical approximation, as long as the correspondence principle is maintained. A consistent choice will violate standard Lorentz invariance. Thus, to preserve a relativity principle in this framework, the linear realization of Lorentz symmetry should be extended or superseded.

The Entropy of the Rotating Charged Black Threebrane from a Brane-Antibrane System

We show that a model based on a D3-brane--anti-D3-brane system at finite temperature, proposed previously as a microscopic description of the non-rotating black threebrane of type IIB supergravity arbitrarily far from extremality, can also successfully reproduce the entropy of the rotating threebrane with arbitrary charge (including the neutral case, which corresponds to the Kerr black hole in seven dimensions). Our results appear to confirm in particular the need for a peculiar condition on the energy of the two gases involved in the model, whose physical interpretation remains to be elucidated.

New Solution of D=11 Supergravity on S^7 from D=4

A new static partially twisted solution of N=4, SO(4) gauged supergravity in D=11 is obtained in this work using Cvetiĉ et al embedding of four dimensional into eleven dimensional supergravities. In four dimensions we get two solutions: an asymptotic one corresponding to $AdS_4$ and a near horizon fixed point solution of the form $AdS_2\times H_2$. Hence, while the former solution has 32 supercharges the latter turns out to have only 4 conserved. Moreover, we managed to find an exact interpolating solution, thus connecting the above two. Aiming at a future study of $AdS/CFT$ duality for the theory at hand we derived the Penrose limit of the four dimensional solutions. Interestingly the pp-wave limit of the near horizon solution suggests itself as being of the supernumerary supersymmetric type. In D=11 we exhibit the uplift of the four dimensional solutions: one associated to $AdS_4\times S^7$ and the other to a foliation of $AdS_2\times H_2 \times S^7$, as well as their pp-wave limits.

Measuring spacetime: from big bang to black holes

Nerd abstract: Observational constraints on spacetime are reviewed, focusing on how the underlying physics (dark matter, dark energy, gravity) can be tested rather than assumed. Popular abstract: Space is not a boring static stage on which events unfold over time, but a dynamic entity with curvature, fluctuations and a rich life of its own which is a booming area of study. Spectacular new measurements of the cosmic microwave background, gravitational lensing, type Ia supernovae, large-scale structure, spectra of the Lyman alpha forest, stellar dynamics and x-ray binaries are probing the properties of spacetime over 22 orders of magnitude in scale. Current measurements are consistent with an infinite flat everlasting Universe containing about 30% cold dark matter, 65% dark energy and at least two distinct populations of black holes.

Essential self-adjointness in one-loop quantum cosmology

The quantization of closed cosmologies makes it necessary to study squared Dirac operators on closed intervals and the corresponding quantum amplitudes. This paper proves self-adjointness of these second-order elliptic operators.

Quantum gravity corrections to neutrino propagation

Massive spin-1/2 fields are studied in the framework of loop quantum gravity by considering a state approximating, at a length scale $\cal L$ much greater than Planck length $\ell_P=1.2\times 10^{-33}$cm, a spin-1/2 field in flat spacetime. The discrete structure of spacetime at $\ell_P$ yields corrections to the field propagation at scale $\cal L$. Next, Neutrino Bursts (${\bar p}\approx 10^5$GeV) accompaning Gamma Ray Bursts that have travelled cosmological distances, $L\approx 10^{10}$l.y., are considered. The dominant correction is helicity independent and leads to a time delay w.r.t. the speed of light, $c$, of order $({\bar p} \ell_P) L/c\approx 10^4$s. To next order in ${\bar p} \ell_P$ the correction has the form of the Gambini and Pullin effect for photons. Its contribution to time delay is comparable to that caused by the mass term. Finally, a dependence $L_{\rm os}^{-1} \propto {\bar p}^2 \ell_P$ is found for a two-flavour neutrino oscillation length.

Fermion mass gap in the loop representation of quantum gravity

An essential step towards the identification of a fermion mass generation mechanism at Planck scale is to analyse massive fermions in a given quantum gravity framework. In this letter the two mass terms entering the Hamiltonian constraint for the Einstein-Majorana system are studied in the loop representation of quantum gravity and fermions. One resembles a bare mass gap because it is not zero for states with zero (fermion) kinetic energy as opposite to the other that is interpreted as `dressing' the mass. The former contribution originates from (at least) triple intersections of the loop states acted on whilst the latter is traced back to every couple of coinciding end points, where fermions sit. Thus, fermion mass terms get encoded in the combinatorics of loop states. At last the possibility is discussed of relating fermion masses to the topology of space.

Reality conditions for Ashtekar variables as Dirac constraints

We show that the reality conditions to be imposed on Ashtekar variables to recover real gravity can be implemented as second class constraints a la Dirac. Thus, counting gravitational degrees of freedom follows accordingly. Some constraints of the real theory turn out to be non-polynomial, regardless of the form, polynomial or non-polynomial, taken for the reality conditions. We comment upon the compatibility of our approach with the recently proposed Wick transform point of view, as well as on some alternatives for dealing with such second class constraints.

Boundary Terms for Massless Fermionic Fields

Local supersymmetry leads to boundary conditions for fermionic fields in one-loop quantum cosmology involving the Euclidean normal to the boundary and a pair of independent spinor fields. This paper studies the corresponding classical properties, i.e. the classical boundary-value problem and boundary terms in the variational problem. Interestingly, a link is found with the classical boundary-value problem when spectral boundary conditions are imposed on a 3-sphere in the massless case. Moreover, the boundary term in the action functional is derived.

Self-Dual Action for Fermionic Fields and Gravitation

This paper studies the self-dual Einstein-Dirac theory. A generalization is obtained of the Jacobson-Smolin proof of the equivalence between the self-dual and Palatini purely gravitational actions. Hence one proves equivalence of self-dual Einstein-Dirac theory to the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble-Dirac theory. The Bianchi symmetry of the curvature, core of the proof, now contains a non-vanishing torsion. Thus, in the self-dual framework, the extra terms entering the equations of motion with respect to the standard Einstein-Dirac field equations, are neatly associated with torsion.
