The deconfinement phase transition in the Hamiltonian approach to Yang--Mills theory in Coulomb gauge

The deconfinement phase transition of SU(2) Yang--Mills theory is investigated in the Hamiltonian approach in Coulomb gauge assuming a quasi-particle picture for the grand canonical gluon ensemble. The thermal equilibrium state is found by minimizing the free energy with respect to the quasi-gluon energy. Above the deconfinement phase transition the ghost form factor remains infrared divergent but its infrared exponent is approximately halved, while the gluon energy, being infrared divergent in the confined phase, becomes infrared finite in the deconfined phase. For the effective gluon mass we find a critical exponent of 0.37. Using the lattice results for the gluon propagator to fix the scale, the deconfinement transition temperature is obtained in the range of 275 to 290 MeV.

On the temporal Wilson loop in the Hamiltonian approach in Coulomb gauge

We investigate the temporal Wilson loop using the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory. In simple cases such as the Abelian theory or the non-Abelian theory in (1+1) dimensions, the known results can be reproduced using unitary transformations to take care of time evolution. We show how Coulomb gauge can be used for an alternative solution if the exact ground state wave functional is known. In the most interesting case of Yang-Mills theory in (3+1) dimensions, the vacuum wave functional is not known, but recent variational approaches in Coulomb gauge give a decent approximation. We use this formulation to compute the temporal Wilson loop and find that the Wilson and Coulomb string tension agree within our approximation scheme. Possible improvements of these findings are briefly discussed.

Nonperturbative study of the four-point heavy quark Green's functions in Coulomb gauge

The heavy quark sector of Coulomb gauge QCD is investigated, by making a heavy quark mass expansion of the QCD action and restricting to the leading order. With the truncation of the Yang-Mills sector to include only dressed two-point functions, we study the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the four-point quark Green's functions (proper and amputated). In this limit, we provide an exact solution for the four-point quark Green's functions and show that the corresponding poles relate to the bound state energy of the heavy quark system. Moreover, a natural separation between the physical and unphysical poles in the Green's functions emerges.

Leading order QCD in Coulomb gauge

Coulomb gauge QCD in the first order formalism can be written in terms of a ghost-free, nonlocal action that ensures total color charge conservation via Gauss' law. Making an Ansatz whereby the nonlocal term (the Coulomb kernel) is replaced by its expectation value, the resulting Dyson-Schwinger equations can be derived. With a leading order truncation, these equations reduce to the gap equations for the static gluon and quark propagators obtained from a quasi-particle approximation to the canonical Hamiltonian approach. Moreover a connection to the heavy quark limit can be established, allowing an intuitive explanation for the charge constraint and infrared divergences.

Leading order infrared quantum chromodynamics in Coulomb gauge

A truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of quantum chromodynamics in Coulomb gauge within the first order formalism is presented. The truncation is based on an Ansatz for the Coulomb kernel occurring in the action. Results at leading loop order and in the infrared are discussed for both the Yang-Mills and quark sectors. It is found that the resulting equations for the static gluon and quark propagators agree with those derived in a quasi-particle approximation to the canonical Hamiltonian approach. Moreover, a connection to the heavy quark limit is established. The equations are analyzed numerically and it is seen that in both the gluonic and quark sectors, a nontrivial dynamical infrared mass scale emerges.

The ghost-gluon vertex in Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge

The Dyson-Schwinger equation for the ghost-gluon vertex of the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is solved at one-loop level using as input the non-perturbative ghost and gluon propagators previously determined within the variational approach. The obtained ghost-gluon vertex is IR finite but IR enhanced compared to the bare one by 15% to 25%, depending on the kinematical momentum regime.

Chiral symmetry breaking in Hamiltonian QCD in Coulomb gauge

Spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is investigated in the Hamiltonian approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge. The quark wave functional is determined by the variational principle using an ansatz which goes beyond the commonly used BCS-type of wave functionals and includes the coupling of the quarks to the transversal spatial gluons. Using the lattice gluon propagator as input it is shown that the low energy chiral properties of the quarks, like the quark condensate and the constituent quark mass, are substantially increased by the coupling of the quarks to the spatial gluons. Our results compare favourably with the phenomenological values.

Variational approach to Yang-Mills theory at finite temperatures

We study the finite-temperature phase of a gluon ensemble in a variational approximation to QCD in the Coulomb gauge. We derive and numerically solve the underlying Dyson-Schwinger equations up to one-loop order. Assuming the subcritical solution at T=0, we find a sharp transition in the infrared value of the gluon energy at a critical temperature.

Schwinger-Dyson equations and disorder

Using simple models in D=0+0 and D=0+1 dimensions we construct partition functions and compute two-point correlations. The exact result is compared with saddle-point approximation and solutions of Schwinger-Dyson equations. When integrals are dominated by more than one saddle-point we find Schwinger-Dyson equations do not reproduce the correct results unless the action is first transformed into dual variables.

Color Coulomb Potential in Yang-Mills Theory from Hamiltonian Flows

We consider the Hamiltonian formulation of Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb gauge and apply the recently developed technique of Hamiltonian flows. We formulate a flow equation for the color Coulomb potential which allows for a scaling solution that results in an almost linearly rising confining potential.

Variational Approach to Yang--Mills Theory with non-Gaussian Wave Functionals

A general method for treating non-Gaussian wave functionals in quantum field theory is presented and applied to the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge in order to include a three-gluon kernel in the exponential of the vacuum wave functional. The three-gluon vertex is calculated using the propagators found in the variational approach with a Gaussian trial wave functional as input.

The Coulomb gauge ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation

A numerical study of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation in Coulomb gauge is performed and solutions for the ghost propagator found. As input, lattice results for the spatial gluon propagator are used. It is shown that in order to solve completely, the equation must be supplemented by a nonperturbative boundary condition (the value of the inverse ghost propagator dressing function at zero momentum) which determines if the solution is critical (zero value for the boundary condition) or subcritical (finite value). The various solutions exhibit a characteristic behavior where all curves follow the same (critical) solution when going from high to low momenta until `forced' to freeze out in the infrared to the value of the boundary condition. The renormalization is shown to be largely independent of the boundary condition. The boundary condition and the pattern of the solutions can be interpreted in terms of the Gribov gauge-fixing ambiguity. The connection to the temporal gluon propagator and the infrared slavery picture of confinement is explored.

Heavy quarks, gluons and the confinement potential in Coulomb gauge

We consider the heavy quark limit of Coulomb gauge QCD, with the truncation of the Yang-Mills sector to include only (dressed) two-point functions. We find that the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations is nonperturbatively exact and moreover, we provide a direct connection between the temporal gluon propagator and the quark confinement potential. Further, we show that only bound states of color singlet quark-antiquark (meson) and quark-quark (SU(2) baryon) pairs are physically allowed.

Non-Gaussian wave functionals in Coulomb gauge Yang--Mills theory

A general method to treat non-Gaussian vacuum wave functionals in the Hamiltonian formulation of a quantum field theory is presented. By means of Dyson--Schwinger techniques, the static Green functions are expressed in terms of the kernels arising in the Taylor expansion of the exponent of the vacuum wave functional. These kernels are then determined by minimizing the vacuum expectation value of the Hamiltonian. The method is applied to Yang--Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, using a vacuum wave functional whose exponent contains up to quartic terms in the gauge field. An estimate of the cubic and quartic interaction kernels is given using as input the gluon and ghost propagators found with a Gaussian wave functional.

A new functional renormalization group equation for Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is presented and solved for the static gluon and ghost propagators under the assumption of ghost dominance. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach.

Hamiltonian Flow in Coulomb Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

We derive a new functional renormalization group equation for Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. The flow equations for the static gluon and ghost propagators are solved under the assumption of ghost dominance within different diagrammatic approximations. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach and the reliability of the approximations is discussed.
