Ion and Electron Acoustic Bursts during Anti-Parallel Magnetic Reconnection Driven by Lasers

Magnetic reconnection converts magnetic energy into thermal and kinetic energy in plasma. Among numerous candidate mechanisms, ion acoustic instabilities driven by the relative drift between ions and electrons, or equivalently electric current, have been suggested to play a critical role in dissipating magnetic energy in collisionless plasmas. However, their existence and effectiveness during reconnection have not been well understood due to ion Landau damping and difficulties in resolving the Debye length scale in the laboratory. Here we report a sudden onset of ion acoustic bursts measured by collective Thomson scattering in the exhaust of anti-parallel magnetically driven reconnection using high-power lasers. The ion acoustic bursts are followed by electron acoustic bursts with electron heating and bulk acceleration. We reproduce these observations with 1D and 2D particle-in-cell simulations in which electron outflow jet drives ion-acoustic instabilities, forming double layers. These layers induce electron two-stream instabilities that generate electron acoustic bursts and energize electrons. Our results demonstrate the importance of ion and electron acoustic dynamics during reconnection when ion Landau damping is ineffective, a condition applicable to a range of astrophysical plasmas including near-Earth space, stellar flares, and black hole accretion engines.

Box-Level Active Detection

Active learning selects informative samples for annotation within budget, which has proven efficient recently on object detection. However, the widely used active detection benchmarks conduct image-level evaluation, which is unrealistic in human workload estimation and biased towards crowded images. Furthermore, existing methods still perform image-level annotation, but equally scoring all targets within the same image incurs waste of budget and redundant labels. Having revealed above problems and limitations, we introduce a box-level active detection framework that controls a box-based budget per cycle, prioritizes informative targets and avoids redundancy for fair comparison and efficient application. Under the proposed box-level setting, we devise a novel pipeline, namely Complementary Pseudo Active Strategy (ComPAS). It exploits both human annotations and the model intelligence in a complementary fashion: an efficient input-end committee queries labels for informative objects only; meantime well-learned targets are identified by the model and compensated with pseudo-labels. ComPAS consistently outperforms 10 competitors under 4 settings in a unified codebase. With supervision from labeled data only, it achieves 100% supervised performance of VOC0712 with merely 19% box annotations. On the COCO dataset, it yields up to 4.3% mAP improvement over the second-best method. ComPAS also supports training with the unlabeled pool, where it surpasses 90% COCO supervised performance with 85% label reduction. Experimental Validation of Single BS 5G mmWave Positioning and Mapping for Intelligent Transport

Positioning with 5G signals generally requires connection to several base stations (BSs), which makes positioning more demanding in terms of infrastructure than communications. To address this issue, there have been several theoretical studies on single BS positioning, leveraging high-resolution angle and delay estimation and multipath exploitation possibilities at mmWave frequencies. This paper presents the first realistic experimental validation of such studies, involving a commercial 5G mmWave BS and a user equipment (UE) development kit mounted on a test vehicle. We present the relevant signal models, signal processing methods (including channel parameter estimation and position estimation), and validate these based on real data collected in an outdoor science park environment. Our results indicate that positioning is possible, but the performance with a single BS is limited by the knowledge of the position and orientation of the infrastructure and the multipath visibility and diversity.

From Discrimination to Generation: Knowledge Graph Completion with Generative Transformer

Knowledge graph completion aims to address the problem of extending a KG with missing triples. In this paper, we provide an approach GenKGC, which converts knowledge graph completion to sequence-to-sequence generation task with the pre-trained language model. We further introduce relation-guided demonstration and entity-aware hierarchical decoding for better representation learning and fast inference. Experimental results on three datasets show that our approach can obtain better or comparable performance than baselines and achieve faster inference speed compared with previous methods with pre-trained language models. We also release a new large-scale Chinese knowledge graph dataset AliopenKG500 for research purpose. Code and datasets are available in https://github.com/zjunlp/PromptKG/tree/main/GenKGC.

RISs and Sidelink Communications in Smart Cities: The Key to Seamless Localization and Sensing

A smart city involves, among other elements, intelligent transportation, crowd monitoring, and digital twins, each of which requires information exchange via wireless communication links and localization of connected devices and passive objects (including people). Although localization and sensing (L&S) are envisioned as core functions of future communication systems, they have inherently different demands in terms of infrastructure compared to communications. Wireless communications generally requires a connection to only a single access point (AP), while L&S demand simultaneous line-of-sight propagation paths to several APs, which serve as location and orientation anchors. Hence, a smart city deployment optimized for communication will be insufficient to meet stringent L&S requirements. In this article, we argue that the emerging technologies of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and sidelink communications constitute the key to providing ubiquitous coverage for L&S in smart cities with low-cost and energy-efficient technical solutions. To this end, we propose and evaluate AP-coordinated and self-coordinated RIS-enabled L&S architectures and detail three groups of application scenarios, relying on low-complexity beacons, cooperative localization, and full-duplex transceivers. A list of practical issues and consequent open research challenges of the proposed L&S systems is also provided.

A Surrogate-Assisted Highly Cooperative Coevolutionary Algorithm for Hyperparameter Optimization in Deep Convolutional Neural Network

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have gained remarkable success in recent years. However, their performance highly relies on the architecture hyperparameters, and finding proper hyperparameters for a deep CNN is a challenging optimization problem owing to its high-dimensional and computationally expensive characteristics. Given these difficulties, this study proposes a surrogate-assisted highly cooperative hyperparameter optimization (SHCHO) algorithm for chain-styled CNNs. To narrow the large search space, SHCHO first decomposes the whole CNN into several overlapping sub-CNNs in accordance with the overlapping hyperparameter interaction structure and then cooperatively optimizes these hyperparameter subsets. Two cooperation mechanisms are designed during this process. One coordinates all the sub-CNNs to reproduce the information flow in the whole CNN and achieve macro cooperation among them, and the other tackles the overlapping components by simultaneously considering the involved two sub-CNNs and facilitates micro cooperation between them. As a result, a proper hyperparameter configuration can be effectively located for the whole CNN. Besides, SHCHO also employs the well-performing surrogate technique to assist in the hyperparameter optimization of each sub-CNN, thereby greatly reducing the expensive computational cost. Extensive experimental results on two widely-used image classification datasets indicate that SHCHO can significantly improve the performance of CNNs.

Detecting Network-based Internet Censorship via Latent Feature Representation Learning

Internet censorship is a phenomenon of societal importance and attracts investigation from multiple disciplines. Several research groups, such as Censored Planet, have deployed large scale Internet measurement platforms to collect network reachability data. However, existing studies generally rely on manually designed rules (i.e., using censorship fingerprints) to detect network-based Internet censorship from the data. While this rule-based approach yields a high true positive detection rate, it suffers from several challenges: it requires human expertise, is laborious, and cannot detect any censorship not captured by the rules. Seeking to overcome these challenges, we design and evaluate a classification model based on latent feature representation learning and an image-based classification model to detect network-based Internet censorship. To infer latent feature representations fromnetwork reachability data, we propose a sequence-to-sequence autoencoder to capture the structure and the order of data elements in the data. To estimate the probability of censorship events from the inferred latent features, we rely on a densely connected multi-layer neural network model. Our image-based classification model encodes a network reachability data record as a gray-scale image and classifies the image as censored or not using a dense convolutional neural network. We compare and evaluate both approaches using data sets from Censored Planet via a hold-out evaluation. Both classification models are capable of detecting network-based Internet censorship as we were able to identify instances of censorship not detected by the known fingerprints. Latent feature representations likely encode more nuances in the data since the latent feature learning approach discovers a greater quantity, and a more diverse set, of new censorship instances.

Misspecified Cramér-Rao Bound of RIS-aided Localization under Geometry Mismatch

In 5G/6G wireless systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) can play a role as a passive anchor to enable and enhance localization in various scenarios. However, most existing RIS-aided localization works assume that the geometry of the RIS is perfectly known, which is not realistic in practice due to calibration errors. In this work, we derive the misspecified Cramér-Rao bound (MCRB) for a single-input-single-output RIS-aided localization system with RIS geometry mismatch. Specifically, unlike most existing works that use numerical methods, we propose a closed-form solution to the pseudo-true parameter determination problem for MCRB analysis. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the derived pseudo-true parameters and MCRB, and show that the RIS geometry mismatch causes performance saturation in the high signal-to-noise ratio regions.

Learning to Shape Rewards using a Game of Two Partners

Reward shaping (RS) is a powerful method in reinforcement learning (RL) for overcoming the problem of sparse or uninformative rewards. However, RS typically relies on manually engineered shaping-reward functions whose construction is time-consuming and error-prone. It also requires domain knowledge which runs contrary to the goal of autonomous learning. We introduce Reinforcement Learning Optimising Shaping Algorithm (ROSA), an automated reward shaping framework in which the shaping-reward function is constructed in a Markov game between two agents. A reward-shaping agent (Shaper) uses switching controls to determine which states to add shaping rewards for more efficient learning while the other agent (Controller) learns the optimal policy for the task using these shaped rewards. We prove that ROSA, which adopts existing RL algorithms, learns to construct a shaping-reward function that is beneficial to the task thus ensuring efficient convergence to high performance policies. We demonstrate ROSA's properties in three didactic experiments and show its superior performance against state-of-the-art RS algorithms in challenging sparse reward environments.

Decision-Aware Conditional GANs for Time Series Data

We introduce the decision-aware time-series conditional generative adversarial network (DAT-CGAN) as a method for time-series generation. The framework adopts a multi-Wasserstein loss on structured decision-related quantities, capturing the heterogeneity of decision-related data and providing new effectiveness in supporting the decision processes of end users. We improve sample efficiency through an overlapped block-sampling method, and provide a theoretical characterization of the generalization properties of DAT-CGAN. The framework is demonstrated on financial time series for a multi-time-step portfolio choice problem. We demonstrate better generative quality in regard to underlying data and different decision-related quantities than strong, GAN-based baselines.

MVKT-ECG: Efficient Single-lead ECG Classification on Multi-Label Arrhythmia by Multi-View Knowledge Transferring

The widespread emergence of smart devices for ECG has sparked demand for intelligent single-lead ECG-based diagnostic systems. However, it is challenging to develop a single-lead-based ECG interpretation model for multiple diseases diagnosis due to the lack of some key disease information. In this work, we propose inter-lead Multi-View Knowledge Transferring of ECG (MVKT-ECG) to boost single-lead ECG's ability for multi-label disease diagnosis. This training strategy can transfer superior disease knowledge from multiple different views of ECG (e.g. 12-lead ECG) to single-lead-based ECG interpretation model to mine details in single-lead ECG signals that are easily overlooked by neural networks. MVKT-ECG allows this lead variety as a supervision signal within a teacher-student paradigm, where the teacher observes multi-lead ECG educates a student who observes only single-lead ECG. Since the mutual disease information between the single-lead ECG and muli-lead ECG plays a key role in knowledge transferring, we present a new disease-aware Contrastive Lead-information Transferring(CLT) to improve the mutual disease information between the single-lead ECG and muli-lead ECG. Moreover, We modify traditional Knowledge Distillation to multi-label disease Knowledge Distillation (MKD) to make it applicable for multi-label disease diagnosis. The comprehensive experiments verify that MVKT-ECG has an excellent performance in improving the diagnostic effect of single-lead ECG.

Efficient Design of Helical Higher-Order Topological Insulators in 3D Elastic Medium

Topological materials (TMs) are well-known for their topological protected properties. Phononic system has the advantage of direct observation and engineering of topological phenomena on the macroscopic scale. For the inverse design of 3D TMs in continuum medium, however, it would be extremely difficult to classify the topological properties, tackle the computational complexity, and search solutions in an infinite parameter space. This work proposed a systematic design framework for the 3D mechanical higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) by combining the symmetry indicators (SI) method and the moving morphable components (MMC) method. The 3D unit cells are described by the MMC method with only tens of design variables. By evaluating the inherent singularity properties in the 3D mechanical system, the classic formulas of topological invariants are modified accordingly for elastic waves. Then a mathematical formulation is proposed for designing the helical multipole topological insulators (MTIs) featured corner states and helical energy fluxes, by constraining the corresponding topological invariants and maximizing the width of band gap. Mechanical helical HOTIs with different symmetries are obtained by this method and verified by full wave simulations. This design paradigm can be further extended to design 3D TMs among different symmetry classes and space groups, and different physical systems.

Unsupervised Model-based speaker adaptation of end-to-end lattice-free MMI model for speech recognition

Modeling the speaker variability is a key challenge for automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. In this paper, the learning hidden unit contributions (LHUC) based adaptation techniques with compact speaker dependent (SD) parameters are used to facilitate both speaker adaptive training (SAT) and unsupervised test-time speaker adaptation for end-to-end (E2E) lattice-free MMI (LF-MMI) models. An unsupervised model-based adaptation framework is proposed to estimate the SD parameters in E2E paradigm using LF-MMI and cross entropy (CE) criterions. Various regularization methods of the standard LHUC adaptation, e.g., the Bayesian LHUC (BLHUC) adaptation, are systematically investigated to mitigate the risk of overfitting, on E2E LF-MMI CNN-TDNN and CNN-TDNN-BLSTM models. Lattice-based confidence score estimation is used for adaptation data selection to reduce the supervision label uncertainty. Experiments on the 300-hour Switchboard task suggest that applying BLHUC in the proposed unsupervised E2E adaptation framework to byte pair encoding (BPE) based E2E LF-MMI systems consistently outperformed the baseline systems by relative word error rate (WER) reductions up to 10.5% and 14.7% on the NIST Hub5'00 and RT03 evaluation sets, and achieved the best performance in WERs of 9.0% and 9.7%, respectively. These results are comparable to the results of state-of-the-art adapted LF-MMI hybrid systems and adapted Conformer-based E2E systems.

Non-trivial band topology and orbital-selective electronic nematicity in a new titanium-based kagome superconductor

Electronic nematicity that spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry has been shown as a generic phenomenon in correlated quantum systems including high-temperature superconductors and the AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) family with a kagome network. Identifying the driving force has been a central challenge for understanding nematicity. In iron-based superconductors, the problem is complicated because the spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom are intimately coupled. In vanadium-based kagome superconductors AV3Sb5, the electronic nematicity exhibits an intriguing entanglement with the charge density wave order (CDW), making understanding its origin difficult. Recently, a new family of titanium-based kagome superconductors ATi3Bi5 has been synthesized. In sharp contrast to its vanadium-based counterpart, the electronic nematicity occurs in the absence of CDW. ATi3Bi5 provides a new window to explore the mechanism of electronic nematicity and its interplay with the orbital degree of freedom. Here, we combine polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with density functional theory to directly reveal the band topology and orbital characters of the multi-orbital RbTi3Bi5. The promising coexistence of flat bands, type-II Dirac nodal line and nontrivial Z2 topological states is identified in RbTi3Bi5. Remarkably, our study clearly unveils the orbital character change along the G-M and G-K directions, implying a strong intrinsic inter-orbital coupling in the Ti-based kagome metals, reminiscent of iron-based superconductors. Furthermore, doping-dependent measurements directly uncover the orbital-selective features in the kagome bands, which can be well explained by the d-p hybridization. The suggested d-p hybridization, in collaboration with the inter-orbital coupling, could account for the electronic nematicity in ATi3Bi5.

RIS-Enabled and Access-Point-Free Simultaneous Radio Localization and Mapping

In the upcoming sixth generation (6G) of wireless communication systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces~(RISs) are regarded as one of the promising technological enablers, which can provide programmable signal propagation. Therefore, simultaneous radio localization and mapping(SLAM) with RISs appears as an emerging research direction within the 6G ecosystem. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of RIS-enabled radio SLAM for wireless operation without the intervention of access points (APs). We first design the RIS phase profiles leveraging prior information for the user equipment~(UE), such that they uniformly illuminate the angular sector where the UE is probabilistically located. Second, we modify the marginal Poisson multi-Bernoulli SLAM filter and estimate the UE state and landmarks, which enables efficient mapping of the radio propagation environment. Third, we derive the theoretical Cramér-Rao lower bounds on the estimators for the channel parameters and the UE state. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed method under scenarios with a limited number of transmissions, taking into account the channel coherence time. Our results demonstrate that the RIS enables solving the radio SLAM problem with zero APs, and that the consideration of the Doppler shift contributes to improving the UE speed estimates.

Joint RIS Calibration and Multi-User Positioning

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are expected to be a key component enabling the mobile network evolution towards a flexible and intelligent 6G wireless platform. In most of the research works so far, RIS has been treated as a passive base station (BS) with a known state, in terms of its location and orientation, to boost the communication and/or terminal positioning performance. However, such performance gains cannot be guaranteed anymore when the RIS state is not perfectly known. In this paper, by taking the RIS state uncertainty into account, we formulate and study the performance of a joint RIS calibration and user positioning (JrCUP) scheme. From the Fisher information perspective, we formulate the JrCUP problem in a network-centric single-input multiple-output (SIMO) scenario with a single BS, and derive the analytical lower bound for the states of both user and RIS. We also demonstrate the geometric impact of different user locations on the JrCUP performance while also characterizing the performance under different RIS sizes. Finally, the study is extended to a multi-user scenario, shown to further improve the state estimation performance.

Observation of Flat Band, Dirac Nodal Lines and Topological Surface States in Kagome Superconductor CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$

A kagome lattice of 3d transition metals hosts flat bands, Dirac fermions and saddle points. It provides a versatile platform for achieving topological superconductivity, anomalous Hall effect, unconventional density wave order and quantum spin liquid when the strong correlation, spin-orbit coupling or magnetic order are involved in such a lattice. Here, using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations, we investigate the electronic structure of the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$, which is isostructural to the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb or Cs) kagome superconductors and possesses a perfect two-dimensional kagome network of Titanium. We directly observed a strikingly flat band derived from the local destructive interferences of Bloch wave functions within the kagome lattices. We also identify the type-II Dirac nodal loops around the Brillouin zone center, the type-III Dirac nodal loops around the zone corners and type-III Dirac nodal lines along the k$_z$ direction. In addition, around the Brillouin zone center, Z2 nontrivial topological surface states are also observed which is formed from the band inversion due to strong spin orbital coupling. The simultaneous existence of such multi-sets of nontrivial band structures in one kagome superconductor not only provides good opportunities to study related physics in the kagome lattice but also makes CsTi$_3$Bi$_5$ an ideal system to realize noval quantum phenomena by manipulating its chemical potential with chemical doping or pressure.
