A Variational Approach for Learning from Positive and Unlabeled Data

Learning binary classifiers only from positive and unlabeled (PU) data is an important and challenging task in many real-world applications, including web text classification, disease gene identification and fraud detection, where negative samples are difficult to verify experimentally. Most recent PU learning methods are developed based on the conventional misclassification risk of the supervised learning type, and they require to solve the intractable risk estimation problem by approximating the negative data distribution or the class prior. In this paper, we introduce a variational principle for PU learning that allows us to quantitatively evaluate the modeling error of the Bayesian classifier directly from given data. This leads to a loss function which can be efficiently calculated without any intermediate step or model, and a variational learning method can then be employed to optimize the classifier under general conditions. In addition, the discriminative performance and numerical stability of the variational PU learning method can be further improved by incorporating a margin maximizing loss function. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed variational method on a number of benchmark examples.

Persuasive Dialogue Understanding: the Baselines and Negative Results

Persuasion aims at forming one's opinion and action via a series of persuasive messages containing persuader's strategies. Due to its potential application in persuasive dialogue systems, the task of persuasive strategy recognition has gained much attention lately. Previous methods on user intent recognition in dialogue systems adopt recurrent neural network (RNN) or convolutional neural network (CNN) to model context in conversational history, neglecting the tactic history and intra-speaker relation. In this paper, we demonstrate the limitations of a Transformer-based approach coupled with Conditional Random Field (CRF) for the task of persuasive strategy recognition. In this model, we leverage inter- and intra-speaker contextual semantic features, as well as label dependencies to improve the recognition. Despite extensive hyper-parameter optimizations, this architecture fails to outperform the baseline methods. We observe two negative results. Firstly, CRF cannot capture persuasive label dependencies, possibly as strategies in persuasive dialogues do not follow any strict grammar or rules as the cases in Named Entity Recognition (NER) or part-of-speech (POS) tagging. Secondly, the Transformer encoder trained from scratch is less capable of capturing sequential information in persuasive dialogues than Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). We attribute this to the reason that the vanilla Transformer encoder does not efficiently consider relative position information of sequence elements.

ArSMART: An Improved SMART NoC Design Supporting Arbitrary-Turn Transmission

SMART NoC, which transmits unconflicted flits to distant processing elements (PEs) in one cycle through the express bypass, is a high-performance NoC design proposed recently. However, if contention occurs, flits with low priority would not only be buffered but also could not fully utilize bypass. Although there exist several routing algorithms that decrease contentions by rounding busy routers and links, they cannot be directly applicable to SMART since it lacks the support for arbitrary-turn (i.e., the number and direction of turns are free of constraints) routing. Thus, in this article, to minimize contentions and further utilize bypass, we propose an improved SMART NoC, called ArSMART, in which arbitrary-turn transmission is enabled. Specifically, ArSMART divides the whole NoC into multiple clusters where the route computation is conducted by the cluster controller and the data forwarding is performed by the bufferless reconfigurable router. Since the long-range transmission in SMART NoC needs to bypass the intermediate arbitration, to enable this feature, we directly configure the input and output ports connection rather than apply hop-by-hop table-based arbitration. To further explore the higher communication capabilities, effective adaptive routing algorithms that are compatible with ArSMART are proposed. The route computation overhead, one of the main concerns for adaptive routing algorithms, is hidden by our carefully designed control mechanism. Compared with the state-of-the-art SMART NoC, the experimental results demonstrate an average reduction of 40.7% in application schedule length and 29.7% in energy consumption.

A Natural Language Processing Pipeline of Chinese Free-text Radiology Reports for Liver Cancer Diagnosis

Despite the rapid development of natural language processing (NLP) implementation in electronic medical records (EMRs), Chinese EMRs processing remains challenging due to the limited corpus and specific grammatical characteristics, especially for radiology reports. In this study, we designed an NLP pipeline for the direct extraction of clinically relevant features from Chinese radiology reports, which is the first key step in computer-aided radiologic diagnosis. The pipeline was comprised of named entity recognition, synonyms normalization, and relationship extraction to finally derive the radiological features composed of one or more terms. In named entity recognition, we incorporated lexicon into deep learning model bidirectional long short-term memory-conditional random field (BiLSTM-CRF), and the model finally achieved an F1 score of 93.00%. With the extracted radiological features, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and machine learning methods (support vector machine, random forest, decision tree, and logistic regression) were used to build the classifiers for liver cancer prediction. For liver cancer diagnosis, random forest had the highest predictive performance in liver cancer diagnosis (F1 score 86.97%, precision 87.71%, and recall 86.25%). This work was a comprehensive NLP study focusing on Chinese radiology reports and the application of NLP in cancer risk prediction. The proposed NLP pipeline for the radiological feature extraction could be easily implemented in other kinds of Chinese clinical texts and other disease predictive tasks.

Channel-Coupling Fano Resonance and Acoustic Metadamping

Fano resonance featuring asymmetric spectral profiles originates from the interference of local resonances and background continuum. Its narrow-band nature looks seemingly adverse to broadband noise cancellation purposes. In this study, we report theoretically on an intriguing acoustic metamaterial capable of generating multiple Fano-like resonances to realize a broadband sound barrier with satisfactory transmission loss performance. Our proposed design involves an effective channel characterized by effective parameters and short channels filled with air. The effective channel support both monopolar and dipolar modes which interact with the continuum state admitted by the short channels to generate a pair of Fano-like resonances. Due to the destructive interference of sound waves, the two resonances result in transmission loss overall exceeding 10 dB over a broad range 0.6-1.1 kHz. In order to further optimize the overall performance, we introduce metadamping by integrating additional viscous foams in the proposed unit cell. Furthermore, for future experimental tests, the dampened design is decoded into a real space-coiling cell which exhibits identical functionality and is assembled into a partition wall to ensure transmission loss over 10 dB across the range 0.32-4 Hz. Lastly, acoustic negative refraction is accessible by deploying two coupled space-coiling channels in a similar fashion. We believe this work paves the way for realizing effective broadband sound insulation devices with efficient ventilation.

FLFE: A Communication-Efficient and Privacy-Preserving Federated Feature Engineering Framework

Feature engineering is the process of using domain knowledge to extract features from raw data via data mining techniques and is a key step to improve the performance of machine learning algorithms. In the multi-party feature engineering scenario (features are stored in many different IoT devices), direct and unlimited multivariate feature transformations will quickly exhaust memory, power, and bandwidth of devices, not to mention the security of information threatened. Given this, we present a framework called FLFE to conduct privacy-preserving and communication-preserving multi-party feature transformations. The framework pre-learns the pattern of the feature to directly judge the usefulness of the transformation on a feature. Explored the new useful feature, the framework forsakes the encryption-based algorithm for the well-designed feature exchange mechanism, which largely decreases the communication overhead under the premise of confidentiality. We made experiments on datasets of both open-sourced and real-world thus validating the comparable effectiveness of FLFE to evaluation-based approaches, along with the far more superior efficacy.

Deep Learning Methods for Lung Cancer Segmentation in Whole-slide Histopathology Images -- the ACDC@LungHP Challenge 2019

Accurate segmentation of lung cancer in pathology slides is a critical step in improving patient care. We proposed the ACDC@LungHP (Automatic Cancer Detection and Classification in Whole-slide Lung Histopathology) challenge for evaluating different computer-aided diagnosis (CADs) methods on the automatic diagnosis of lung cancer. The ACDC@LungHP 2019 focused on segmentation (pixel-wise detection) of cancer tissue in whole slide imaging (WSI), using an annotated dataset of 150 training images and 50 test images from 200 patients. This paper reviews this challenge and summarizes the top 10 submitted methods for lung cancer segmentation. All methods were evaluated using the false positive rate, false negative rate, and DICE coefficient (DC). The DC ranged from 0.7354$\pm$0.1149 to 0.8372$\pm$0.0858. The DC of the best method was close to the inter-observer agreement (0.8398$\pm$0.0890). All methods were based on deep learning and categorized into two groups: multi-model method and single model method. In general, multi-model methods were significantly better ($\textit{p}$<$0.01$) than single model methods, with mean DC of 0.7966 and 0.7544, respectively. Deep learning based methods could potentially help pathologists find suspicious regions for further analysis of lung cancer in WSI.

Analytical model for quasi-linear flow response to resonant magnetic perturbation in resistive-inertial and viscous-resistive regimes

In this work, a quasi-linear model for plasma flow response to the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in a tokamak has been rigorously developed in the resistive-inertial (RI) and viscous-resistive (VR) regimes purely from the two-field reduced MHD model. Models for plasma response to RMP are commonly composed of equations for the resonant magnetic field response (i.e. the magnetic island) and the torque balance of plasma flow. However, in previous plasma response models, the magnetic island and the torque balance equations are often derived separately from reduced MHD and full MHD equations, respectively. By contrast, in this work we derive both the magnetic island response and the torque balance equations in a quasi-linear model for plasma flow response entirely from a set of two-field reduced MHD equations. Such a quasi-linear model can recover previous plasma flow response models within certain limits and approximations. Furthermore, the physical origins of quasi-linear forces and moments in the flow response equation are also accurately calculated and clarified self-consistently.

Critical regularity criteria for Navier-Stokes equations in terms of one directional derivative of the velocity

In this paper, we consider the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. We investigate some new inequalities and \textit{a priori} estimates to provide the critical regularity criteria in terms of one directional derivative of the velocity field, namely $\partial_3 \mathbf{u} \in L^p((0,T); L^q(\mathbb{R}^3)), ~\frac{2}{p} + \frac{3}{q} = 2, ~\frac{3}{2}<q\leq 6$. Moreover, we extend the range of $q$ while the solution is axisymmetric, i.e. the axisymmetric solution $\mathbf{m}{u}$ is regular in $(0,T]$, if $ \partial_3 u^3 \in L^p((0,T); L^q(\mathbb{R}^3)), ~\frac{2}{p} + \frac{3}{q} = 2, ~\frac{3}{2}<q< \infty$.

Enhanced Meta-Learning for Cross-lingual Named Entity Recognition with Minimal Resources

For languages with no annotated resources, transferring knowledge from rich-resource languages is an effective solution for named entity recognition (NER). While all existing methods directly transfer from source-learned model to a target language, in this paper, we propose to fine-tune the learned model with a few similar examples given a test case, which could benefit the prediction by leveraging the structural and semantic information conveyed in such similar examples. To this end, we present a meta-learning algorithm to find a good model parameter initialization that could fast adapt to the given test case and propose to construct multiple pseudo-NER tasks for meta-training by computing sentence similarities. To further improve the model's generalization ability across different languages, we introduce a masking scheme and augment the loss function with an additional maximum term during meta-training. We conduct extensive experiments on cross-lingual named entity recognition with minimal resources over five target languages. The results show that our approach significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods across the board.

High-performance Coherent Optical Modulators based on Thin-film Lithium Niobate Platform

The coherent transmission technology using digital signal processing and advanced modulation formats, is bringing networks closer to the theoretical capacity limit of optical fibres, the Shannon limit. The in-phase quadrature electro-optic modulator that encodes information on both the amplitude and the phase of light, is one of the underpinning devices for the coherent transmission technology. Ideally, such modulator should feature low loss, low drive voltage, large bandwidth, low chirp and compact footprint. However, these requirements have been only met on separate occasions. Here, we demonstrate integrated thin-film lithium niobate in-phase/quadrature modulators that fulfil these requirements simultaneously. The presented devices exhibit greatly improved overall performance (half-wave voltage, bandwidth and optical loss) over traditional lithium niobate counterparts, and support modulation data rate up to 320 Gbit s-1. Our devices pave new routes for future high-speed, energy-efficient, and cost-effective communication networks.

Localized spin-orbit polaron in magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

The kagome lattice Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ exhibits the quintessential topological phenomena of a magnetic Weyl semimetal such as the chiral anomaly and Fermi-arc surface states. Probing its magnetic properties is crucial for understanding this correlated topological state. Here, using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S), we report the discovery of localized spin-orbit polarons (SOPs) with three-fold rotation symmetry nucleated around single-S vacancies in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. The SOPs carry a spin-polarized magnetic moment and a large orbital magnetization of a topological origin associated with the Berry phase and the persistent circulating current. Appreciable magneto-elastic coupling of the SOP is detected by atomic force microscope and STM. Our findings suggest that the SOPs can enhance magnetism and stability of the magnetic Weyl nodes for more robust time-reversal-symmetry-breaking topological phenomena. Controlled engineering of the SOPs may pave the way toward practical applications in functional quantum devices.

Tunable giant magnetoresistance in a single-molecule junction

Controlling electronic transport through a single-molecule junction is crucial for molecular electronics or spintronics. In magnetic molecular devices, the spin degree-of-freedom can be used to this end since the magnetic properties of the magnetic ion centers fundamentally impact the transport through the molecules. Here we demonstrate that the electron pathway in a single-molecule device can be selected between two molecular orbitals by varying a magnetic field, giving rise to a tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance up to 93%. The unique tunability of the electron pathways is due to the magnetic reorientation of the transition metal center, resulting in a re-hybridization of molecular orbitals. We obtain the tunneling electron pathways by Kondo effect, which manifests either as a peak or a dip line shape. The energy changes of these spin-reorientations are remarkably low and less than one millielectronvolt. The large tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance could be used to control electronic transport in molecular spintronics.

Atomically-Precise, Custom-Design Origami Graphene Nanostructures

The construction of atomically-precise carbon nanostructures holds promise for developing novel materials for scientific study and nanotechnology applications. Here we show that graphene origami is an efficient way to convert graphene into atomically-precise, complex, and novel nanostructures. By scanning-tunneling-microscope manipulation at low temperature, we repeatedly fold and unfold graphene nanoislands (GNIs) along arbitrarily chosen direction. A bilayer graphene stack featuring a tunable twist angle and a tubular edge connection between the layers are formed. Folding single-crystal GNIs creates tubular edges with specified chirality and one-dimensional electronic features similar to those of carbon nanotubes, while folding bi-crystal GNIs creates well-defined intramolecular junctions. Both origami structural models and electronic band structures were computed to complement analysis of the experimental results. The present atomically-precise graphene origami provides a platform for constructing novel carbon nanostructures with engineered quantum properties and ultimately quantum machines.

Microtwist elasticity: A continuum approach to zero modes and topological polarization in Kagome lattices

The topologically polarized isostatic lattices discovered by Kane and Lubensky (2014, Nat. Phys. 10, 39-45) challenged the standard effective medium theories used in the modeling of many truss-based materials and metamaterials. As a matter of fact, these exhibit Parity (P) asymmetric distributions of zero modes that induce a P-asymmetric elastic behavior, both of which cannot be reproduced within Cauchy elasticity. Here, we propose a new effective medium theory baptized "microtwist elasticity" capable of rendering polarization effects on a macroscopic scale. The theory is valid for trusses on the brink of a polarized-unpolarized phase transition in which case they necessarily exhibit more periodic zero modes than they have dimensions. By mapping each periodic zero mode to a macroscopic degree of freedom, the microtwist theory ends up being a kinematically enriched theory. Microtwist elasticity is constructed thanks to leading order two-scale asymptotics and its constitutive and balance equations are derived for a fairly generic isostatic truss: the Kagome lattice. Various numerical and analytical calculations, of the shape and distribution of zero modes, of dispersion diagrams and of polarization effects, systematically show the quality of the proposed effective medium theory. Most notably, the theory is capable of producing a continuum version of Kane and Lubensky's topological polarization vector.

IMRAM: Iterative Matching with Recurrent Attention Memory for Cross-Modal Image-Text Retrieval

Enabling bi-directional retrieval of images and texts is important for understanding the correspondence between vision and language. Existing methods leverage the attention mechanism to explore such correspondence in a fine-grained manner. However, most of them consider all semantics equally and thus align them uniformly, regardless of their diverse complexities. In fact, semantics are diverse (i.e. involving different kinds of semantic concepts), and humans usually follow a latent structure to combine them into understandable languages. It may be difficult to optimally capture such sophisticated correspondences in existing methods. In this paper, to address such a deficiency, we propose an Iterative Matching with Recurrent Attention Memory (IMRAM) method, in which correspondences between images and texts are captured with multiple steps of alignments. Specifically, we introduce an iterative matching scheme to explore such fine-grained correspondence progressively. A memory distillation unit is used to refine alignment knowledge from early steps to later ones. Experiment results on three benchmark datasets, i.e. Flickr8K, Flickr30K, and MS COCO, show that our IMRAM achieves state-of-the-art performance, well demonstrating its effectiveness. Experiments on a practical business advertisement dataset, named \Ads{}, further validates the applicability of our method in practical scenarios.

Realization of ppm level pressure stability for primary thermometry using a primary piston gauge

To achieve an uncertainty of 0.25 mK in single-pressure refractive-index gas thermometry (SPRIGT), the relative pressure variation of He-4 gas in the range 30 kPa to 90 kPa, should not exceed 4 ppm (k=1). To this end, a novel pressure control system has been developed. It consists of two main parts: a piston gauge to control the pressure, and a home-made gas compensation system to supplement the micro-leak of the piston gauge. In addition, to maintain the piston at constant height, a servo loop is used that automatically determines in real time the amount of extra gas required. At room temperature, the standard deviations of the stabilized pressure are 3.0 mPa at 30 kPa, 4.5 mPa at 60 kPa and 2 mPa at 90 kPa. For the temperature region 5 K-25 K used for SPRIGT in the present work, the relative pressure stability is better than 0.16 ppm i.e. 25 times better than required. Moreover, the same pressure stabilization system is readily transposable to other primary gas thermometers.
