Winding light beams along elliptical helical trajectories

Conventional caustic methods in real or Fourier space produced accelerating optical beams only with convex trajectories. We develop a superposition caustic method capable of winding light beams along non-convex trajectories. We ascertain this method by constructing a one-dimensional (1D) accelerating beam moving along a sinusoidal trajectory, and subsequently extending to two-dimensional (2D) accelerating beams along arbitrarily elliptical helical trajectories. We experimentally implement the method with a compact and robust integrated optics approach by fabricating micro-optical structures on quartz glass plates to perform the spatial phase and amplitude modulation to the incident light, generating beam trajectories highly consistent with prediction. The theoretical and implementation methods can in principle be extended to the construction of accelerating beams with a wide variety of non-convex trajectories, thereby opening up a new route of manipulating light beams for fundamental research and practical applications.

Hanbury-Brown and Twiss effect without quantum interference in photon counting regime

Usually HBT effect can be interpreted by classical (intensity fluctuation correlation) and quantum (interference of two-photon probability amplitudes) theories properly at the same time. In this manuscript, we report a deliberately designed experiment in which two chaotic light beams has the same intensity fluctuation but mutual-orthogonal polarizations to each other so there will be no interference of two-photon probability amplitudes. Classical and quantum theory give different predictions on if there should be HBT (photon bunching) effect or not in the experiment. The experiment results are used to test the two different predictions. At the end, both the temporal and spatial HBT effects are observed.

Global axisymmetric solutions of 3D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes Systems with nonzero swirl

In this paper, we investigate the global well-posedness for the 3-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with the axisymmetric initial data. We prove the global well-posedness provided that $$\|\frac{a_{0}}{r}\|_{\infty} \textrm{ and } \|u_{0}^θ\|_{3} \textrm{ are sufficiently small}. $$ Furthermore, if $\mathbf{u}_0\in L^1$ and $ru^θ_0\in L^1\cap L^2$, we have \begin{equation*} \|u^θ(t)\|_{2}^{2}+\langle t\rangle \|\nabla (u^θ\mathbf{e}_θ)(t)\|_{2}^{2}+t\langle t\rangle(\|u_{t}^θ(t)\|_{2}^{2}+\|Δ(u^θ\mathbf{e}_θ)(t)\|_{2}^{2}) \leq C \langle t\rangle^{-\frac{5}{2}},\ \forall\ t>0. \end{equation*}

Regularity of 3D axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we study the three-dimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes system with nonzero swirl. By establishing a new key inequality for the pair $(\frac{ω^{r}}{r},\frac{ω^θ}{r})$, we get several Prodi-Serrin type regularity criteria based on the angular velocity, $u^θ$. Moreover, we obtain the global well-posedness result if the initial angular velocity $u_{0}^θ$ is appropriate small in the critical space $L^{3}(\R^{3})$. Furthermore, we also get several Prodi-Serrin type regularity criteria based on one component of the solutions, say $ω^3$ or $u^3$.

Scaling the Yield of Laser-Driven Electron-Positron Jets to Laboratory Astrophysical Applications

We report new experimental results obtained on three different laser facilities that show directed laser-driven relativistic electron-positron jets with up to 30 times larger yields than previously obtained and a quadratic (~ E^2) dependence of the positron yield on the laser energy. This favorable scaling stems from a combination of higher energy electrons due to increased laser intensity and the recirculation of MeV electrons in the mm-thick target. Based on this scaling, first principles simulations predict the possibility of using such electron-positron jets, produced at upcoming high-energy laser facilities, to probe the physics of relativistic collisionless shocks in the laboratory.

An Analysis of Thickness-shear Vibrations of an Annular Plate with the Mindlin Plate Equations

The Mindlin plate equations with the consideration of thickness-shear deformation as an independent variable have been used for the analysis of vibrations of quartz crystal resonators of both rectangular and circular types. The Mindlin or Lee plate theories that treat thickness-shear deformation as an independent higher-order vibration mode in a coupled system of two-dimensional variables are the choice of theory for analysis. For circular plates, we derived the Mindlin plate equations in a systematic manner as demonstrated by Mindlin and others and obtained the truncated two-dimensional equations of closely coupled modes in polar coordinates. We simplified the equations for vibration modes in the vicinity of fundamental thickness-shear frequency and validated the equations and method. To explore newer structures of quartz crystal resonators, we utilized the Mindlin plate equations for the analysis of annular plates with fixed inner and free outer edges for frequency spectra. The detailed analysis of vibrations of circular plates for the normalized frequency versus dimensional parameters provide references for optimal selection of parameters based on the principle of strong thickness-shear mode and minimal presence of other modes to enhance energy trapping through maintaining the strong and pure thickness-shear vibrations insensitive to some complication factors such as thermal and initial stresses.

Two-photon interference with two independent and tunable single-mode continuous-wave lasers

The second-order temporal interference between two independent single-mode continuous-wave lasers is discussed by employing two-photon interference in Feynman's path integral theory. It is concluded that whether the second-order temporal interference pattern can be retrieved via two-photon coincidence counting measurement is dependent on the relationship between the resolution time of the detection system and the frequency difference between these two lasers. Two identical and tunable single-mode diode lasers are employed to verify the predictions experimentally. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions. These studies are helpful to understand the physics of two-photon interference with photons of different spectrums and application of two-photon interference in quantum information processing.

Two-photon Interference with Non-identical Photons

The indistinguishability of non-identical photons is dependent on detection system in quantum physics. If two photons with different wavelengths are indistinguishable for a detection system, there can be two-photon interference when these two photons are incident to two input ports of a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, respectively. The reason why two-photon interference phenomena are different for classical and nonclassical light is not due to interference, but due to the properties of light and detection system. These conclusions are helpful to understand the physics and applications of two-photon interference.

The first- and second-order temporal interference between thermal and laser light

The first- and second-order temporal interference between two independent thermal and laser light beams is discussed by employing the superposition principle in Feynman's path integral theory. It is concluded that the first-order temporal interference pattern can not be observed by superposing thermal and laser light, while the second-order temporal interference pattern can be observed in the same condition. These predictions are experimentally verified by employing pseudothermal light to simulate thermal light. The conclusions and method in the paper can be generalized to any order interference of light or massive particles, which is helpful to understand the physics of interference.

The second-order interference of two independent single-mode He-Ne lasers

The second-order spatial and temporal interference patterns with two independent single-mode He-Ne lasers are observed in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. Two-photon interference in Feynman's path integral theory is employed to interpret the experimental results. The conditions to observe the second-order interference pattern with two independent single-mode continuous wave lasers are discussed. It is concluded that two-photon interference exists for not only identical photons, but also photons with different spectrums if the detection system can not distinguish them in principle. The second-order temporal beating with two independent lasers can be employed to measure the coherence time and frequency of one laser if the properties of the other laser were known.

Epitaxial Growth of Large-area Bilayer Graphene on Ru(0001)

Large-area bilayer graphene (BG) is grown epitaxially on Ru(0001) surface and characterized by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The lattice of the bottom layer of BG is stretched by 1.2%, while strain is absent from the top layer. The lattice mismatch between the two layers leads to the formation of a moire pattern with a periodicity of ~21.5 nm and a mixture of AA- and AB-stacking. The root3 x root3 superstructure around atomic defects is attributed to the inter-valley scattering of the delocalized pi-electrons, demonstrating that the as-grown BG behaves like intrinsic free-standing graphene.

Inexpensive hardware and software for photon statistics and correlation spectroscopy

Single-molecule sensitive microscopies and spectroscopies are transforming biophysics and materials science laboratories. Techniques such as fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and single-molecule sensitive fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) are now commonly available in research laboratories but are as yet infrequently available in teaching laboratories. We describe inexpensive electronics and open-source software that bridges this gap, making state-of-the-art measurement research capabilities accessible to undergraduates interested in biophysics. We include a pedagogical discussion of the intensity correlation function relevant to FCS and its calculation directly from photon arrival times. We demonstrate the system with a measurement of the hydrodynamic radius of a protein using FCS that is suitable for an undergraduate teaching laboratory. The FPGA-based electronics, which are easy to construct, are suitable for more advanced measurements as well, and several applications are demonstrated. As implemented, the system has 8 ns timing resolution, outputs to control up to four laser sources, and inputs for as many as four photon-counting detectors.

Charge Density Wave Instability and Soft Phonon in $A$Pt$_3$P ($A$=Ca, Sr, and La)

The electronic and phonon properties of the platinum pnictide superconductors $A$Pt$_3$P ($A$=Ca, Sr, and La) were studied using first-principles calculations. The spin-orbit coupling effect is significant in LaPt$_3$P but negligible in CaPt$_3$P and SrPt$_3$P, although they all share the same anti-pevroskite structure. Moreover, SrPt$_3$P has been demonstrated to exhibit an unexpected weak charge-density-wave(CDW) instability which is neither simply related to the Fermi-surface nesting nor to the momentum-dependent electron-phonon coupling alone. The instability is absent in CaPt$_3$P and can be quickly suppressed by the external pressure, accompanied with gradual decreases in the phonon softening and BCS $T_c$. Our results suggest SrPt$_3$P as a rare example where superconductivity is enhanced by the CDW fluctuations.

Complex Orthogonal Matching Pursuit and Its Exact Recovery Conditions

In this paper, we present new results on using orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), to solve the sparse approximation problem over redundant dictionaries for complex cases (i.e., complex measurement vector, complex dictionary and complex additive white Gaussian noise (CAWGN)). A sufficient condition that OMP can recover the optimal representation of an exactly sparse signal in the complex cases is proposed both in noiseless and bound Gaussian noise settings. Similar to exact recovery condition (ERC) results in real cases, we extend them to complex case and derivate the corresponding ERC in the paper. It leverages this theory to show that OMP succeed for k-sparse signal from a class of complex dictionary. Besides, an application with geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) model is presented for complex cases. Finally, simulation experiments illustrate the validity of the theoretical analysis.

A Fast HRRP Synthesis Algorithm with Sensing Dictionary in GTD Model

To achieve high range resolution profile (HRRP), the geometric theory of diffraction (GTD) parametric model is widely used in stepped-frequency radar system. In the paper, a fast synthetic range profile algorithm, called orthogonal matching pursuit with sensing dictionary (OMP-SD), is proposed. It formulates the traditional HRRP synthetic to be a sparse approximation problem over redundant dictionary. As it employs a priori information that targets are sparsely distributed in the range space, the synthetic range profile (SRP) can be accomplished even in presence of data lost. Besides, the computational complexity is reduced by introducing sensing dictionary (SD) and it mitigates the model mismatch at the same time. The computation complexity decreases from O(MNDK) flops for OMP to O(M(N +D)K) flops for OMP-SD. Simulation experiments illustrate its advantages both in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and noiseless situation, respectively.

Proton Spectrum at the Jupiter Laser Facility of LLNL

This paper looks at tungsten samples irradiated by beams of protons, gammas, electrons and positrons at the Jupiter Laser Facility of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The resulting unstable nuclei created are identified using their gamma spectra. These spectra were taken, usually within an hour of irradiation, for periods up to 48 hrs. In several cases there are two isotopes, one of Rhenium and the other of Tantalum, that emit the same gamma lines. These pairs often involve a long-lived and a short-lived candidate. Spectra were taken 80 days after initial exposure and the long-lived candidates are ruled out.

Density-based Monte Carlo filter and its applications in estimation of unobservable variables and pharmacokinetic parameters

Nonlinear stochastic differential equation models with unobservable variables are now widely used in the analysis of PK/PD data. The unobservable variables are often estimated with extended Kalman filter (EKF), and the unknown pharmacokinetic parameters are usually estimated by maximum likelihood estimator. However, EKF is inadequate for nonlinear PK/PD models, and MLE is known to be biased downwards. A density-based Monte Carlo filter (DMF) is proposed to estimate the unobservable variables, and a simulation-based procedure is proposed to estimate the unknown parameters in this paper, where a genetic algorithm is designed to search the optimal values of pharmacokinetic parameters. The performances of EKF and DMF are compared through simulations, and it is found that the results based on DMF are more accurate than those given by EKF with respect to mean absolute error.
