The Evolution of Stellar Populations in the Outer Disks of Spiral Galaxies

We investigate recent star formation in the extended ultraviolet (XUV) disks of five nearby galaxies (NGC 0628, NGC 2090, NGC 2841, NGC 3621, and NGC 5055) using a long wavelength baseline comprised of ultraviolet and mid-infrared imaging from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera. We identify 229 unresolved stellar complexes across targeted portions of their XUV disks and utilize spectral energy distribution fitting to measure their stellar ages and masses through comparison with Starburst99 population synthesis models of instantaneous burst populations. We find that the median age of outer disk associations in our sample is ~100 Myr with a large dispersion that spans the entire range of our models (1 Myr-1 Gyr). This relatively evolved state for most associations addresses the observed dearth of Halpha emission in some outer disks, as Halpha can only be observed in star forming regions younger than ~10 Myr. The large age dispersion is robust against variations in extinction (in the range E(B-V)=0-0.3 mag) and variations in the upper end of the stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF). In particular, we demonstrate that the age dispersion is insensitive to steepening of the IMF, up to extreme slopes.

Properties of the Compact HII Region Complex G-0.02-0.07

We present new extinction maps and high-resolution Paschen alpha images of G-0.02-0.07, a complex of compact HII regions located adjacent to the M-0.02-0.07 giant molecular cloud, 6 parsecs in projection from the center of the Galaxy. These HII regions, which lie in projection just outside the boundary of the Sgr A East supernova remnant, represent one of the most recent episodes of star formation in the central parsecs of the Galaxy. The 1.87 micron extinctions of regions A, B and C are almost identical, approximately 1.5 magnitudes. Region D, in contrast, has a peak 1.87 micron extinction of 2.3 magnitudes. Adopting the Nishiyama et al. (2008) extinction law, we find these extinctions correspond to visual extinctions of A_V = 44.5 and A_V = 70, respectively. The similar and uniform extinctions of regions A, B and C are consistent with that expected for foreground extinction in the direction of the Galactic center, suggesting that they lie at the front side of the M-0.02-0.07 molecular cloud. Region D is more compact, has a higher extinction and is thus suspected to be younger and embedded in a dense core in a compressed ridge on the western edge of this cloud.

Pseudo-gap pairing in ultracold Fermi atoms

The crossover from a BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) to a BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) superfluid in dilute gases of ultracold Fermi atoms creates an ideal environment to enrich our knowledge of strongly correlated many-body systems. These experiments are relevant to a wide range of fields from condensed matter to astrophysics. The nature of pairing in strongly interacting Fermi gases can be readily studied, thus aiding our understanding of related problems in high-T_{c} superconductors, whose mechanism is still under debate. These are not well-understood due to the large interaction parameter. Here, we calculate the dynamical properties of a normal, trapped, and strongly correlated Fermi gas, by developing a quantum cluster expansion. In ultra-cold atomic physics one can measure the elementary excitations, using rf or Bragg spectroscopy. Our calculations for the single-particle spectral function agree with the recent measurements, and clearly demonstrate pseudogap pairing in the strongly interacting regime.

Discovery of a Luminous Blue Variable with an Ejection Nebula Near the Quintuplet Cluster

We report on the discovery of a luminous blue variable (LBV) lying ~7 pc in projection from the Quintuplet cluster. This source, which we call LBV G0.120-0.048, was selected for spectroscopy owing to its detection as a strong source of Paschen-alpha excess in a recent narrowband imaging survey of the Galactic center region with HST/NICMOS. The K-band spectrum is similar to that of the Pistol Star and other known LBVs. The new LBV was previously cataloged as a photometric variable star, exhibiting brightness fluctuations of up to ~1 mag between 1994 and 1997, with significant variability also occurring on month-to-month time scales. The luminosity of LBV G0.120-0.048, as derived from 2MASS photometry, is approximately equivalent to that of the Pistol Star. However, the time-averaged brightness of LBV G0.120-0.048 between 1994 and 1997 exceeded that of the Pistol Star; LBV G0.120-0.048 also suffers more extinction, which suggests that it was intrinsically more luminous in the infrared than the Pistol Star between 1994 and 1997. Paschen-alpha images reveal a thin circular nebula centered on LBV G0.120-0.048 with a physical radius of ~0.8 pc. We suggest that this nebula is a shell of ejected material launched from a discrete eruption that occurred between 5000 and 10,000 years ago. Because of the very short amount of time that evolved massive stars spend in the LBV phase, and the close proximity of LBV G0.120-0.048 to the Quintuplet cluster, we suggest that this object might be coeval with the cluster and may have once resided within it.

Shear Viscosity of a Gluon Plasma in Perturbative QCD

We calculate the shear viscosity $η$ to entropy density $s$ ratio $η/s$ of a gluon plasma in kinetic theory including the gg->gg and gg<->ggg processes. Due to the suppressed contribution to $η$ in the gg->gg forward scattering, it is known that the gluon bremsstrahlung gg<->ggg process also contributes at the same order $O(α_{s}^{-2})$ in perturbative QCD. Using the Gunion-Bertsch formula for the gg<->ggg matrix element which is valid for the limit of soft bremsstrahlung, we find that the result is sensitive to whether the same limit is taken for the phase space. Using the exact phase space, the gg<->ggg contribution becomes more important to $η$ than gg->gg for $α_{s}\gtrsim 2\times 10^{-3}$. Therefore, at $α_{s}=0.1$, $η/s\simeq 1.0$, between 2.7 obtained by Arnold, Moore and Yaffe (AMY) and 0.5 obtained by Xu and Greiner. If the soft bremsstrahlung limit is imposed on the phase space such that the recoil effect from the bremsstrahlung gluon is neglected, then the correction from the gg<->ggg process is about 10-30% of the total which is close to AMY's prediction. This shows that the soft bremsstrahlung approximation is not as good as previously expected.

A new approach to bulk viscosity in strange quark matter at high densities

A new method is proposed to compute the bulk viscosity in strange quark matter at high densities. Using the method it is straightforward to prove that the bulk viscosity is positive definite, which is not so easy to accomplish in other approaches especially for multi-component fluids like strange quark matter with light up and down quarks and massive strange quarks.

Indirect control of quantum system via accessor: pure coherent control without system excitation

A pure indirect control of quantum systems via quantum accessor is investigated. In this control scheme, we do not apply any external classical excitation fields on the controlled system and we control a quantum system via a quantum accessor and classical control fields control the accessor only. Complete controllability is investigated for arbitrary finite dimensional quantum systems and exemplified by 2 and 3 dimensional systems. The scheme exhibits some advantages; it uses less qubits in accessor and does not depend on the energy-level structure of the controlled system.

Spitzer Observations of Star Formation in the Extreme Outer Disk of M83 (NGC5236)

Spitzer IRAC observations of two fields in the XUV-disk of M83 have been recently obtained,3R_{HII} away from the center of the galaxy (R_{HII)=6.6 kpc).GALEX UV images have shown the two fields to host in-situ recent star formation. The IRAC images are used in conjunction with GALEX data and new HI imaging from THINGS to constrain stellar masses and ages of the UV clumps in the fields, and to relate the local recent star formation to the reservoir of available gas. multi wavelength photometry in the UV and mid-IR bands of 136 UV clumps(spatial resolution >220pc) identified in the two target fields, together with model fitting of the stellar UV-MIR SED,suggest that the clumps cover a range of ages between a few Myr and >1Gyr with a median value around <100Myr,and have masses in the range 10^3-3*10^6M, with a peak ~10^4.7M.The range of observed ages, for which only a small fraction of the mass in stars appears to have formed in the past ~10Myr, agrees with the dearth of Ha emission observed in these outer fiel ds. At the location of our IRAC fields, the HI map shows localized enhancement and clumping of atomic gas. A comparison of the observed star formation with the gas reservoir shows that the UV clumps follow the Schmidt--Kennicutt scaling law of star formation, and that star formation is occurring in regions with gas dens ities at approximately (within a factor of a few) the critical density value de -rived according to the Toomre Q gravitational stability criterion. The signifi cant 8 micron excess in several of the clumps (16% of the total by number accou nting for ~67% of the 8 micron flux)) provides evidence for the existence of dust in these remote fields, in agreement with results for other galaxies. Furt hermore, we observe a relatively small excess of emission at 4.5 micron in the clumps...

Baryon number conservation and enforced electric charge neutrality for bulk viscosity in quark matter

General constraints on fluid velocity divergences for particles in quark matter are derived from baryon number conservation and enforced electric charge neutrality. A new oscillation pattern in three-flavor normal quark matter satisfying these conditions is found and its bulk viscosity is calculated. The result may have astrophysical implication for maximum rotation frequencies of compact stars.

Indirect control with quantum accessor (I): coherent control of multi-level system via qubit chain

Indirect controllability of an arbitrary finite dimensional quantum system (N-dimensional qudit) through a quantum accessor is investigated. Here, The qudit is coupled to a quantum accessor which is modeled as a fully controllable spin chain with nearest neighbor (anisotropic) XY-coupling. The complete controllability of such indirect control system is investigated in detail. The general approach is applied to the indirect controllability of two and three dimensional quantum systems. For two and three dimensional systems, a simpler indirect control scheme is also presented.

The Interplay between Star Formation and the Nuclear Environment of our Galaxy: Deep X-ray Observations of the Galactic Center Arches and Quintuplet Clusters

The Galactic center (GC) provides a unique laboratory for a detailed examination of the interplay between massive star formation and the nuclear environment of our Galaxy. Here, we present an 100 ks Chandra ACIS observation of the Arches and Quintuplet star clusters. We also report on a complementary mapping of the dense molecular gas near the Arches cluster made with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The number-flux relation of point-like X-ray sources indicates an over-population of relatively bright X-ray sources, which are apparently associated with the clusters. The sources in the core of the Arches and Quintuplet clusters are most likely extreme colliding wind massive star binaries. The diffuse X-ray emission from the core of the Arches cluster has a spectrum showing a 6.7-keV emission line and a surface intensity profile declining steeply with radius, indicating an origin in a cluster wind. In the outer regions near the Arches cluster, the overall diffuse X-ray enhancement demonstrates a bow shock morphology and is prominent in the Fe Kalpha 6.4-keV line emission. Much of this enhancement may result from an ongoing collision between the cluster and the adjacent molecular cloud. The older and less compact Quintuplet cluster contains much weaker X-ray sources and diffuse emission, probably originating from low-mass stellar objects as well as a cluster wind. However, the overall population of these objects, constrained by the observed total diffuse X-ray luminosities, is substantially smaller than expected for both clusters. This deficiency of low-mass objects may be a manifestation of the unique star formation environment of the Galactic center.

Spin transfer and polarization of antihyperons in lepton induced reactions

We study the polarization of antihyperon in lepton induced reactions such as $e^+e^-\to\bar H+X$ and $l+p\to l'+\bar H+X$ with polarized beams using different models for spin transfer in high energy fragmentation processes. We compare the results with the available data and those for hyperons. We make predictions for future experiments.

Hyperon polarization in different inclusive production processes in unpolarized high energy hadron-hadron collisions

We apply the picture proposed in a previous Letter, which relates the hyperon polarization in unpolarized hadron-hadron collisions to the left-right asymmetry in singly polarized reactions, to the production of different hyperons in reactions using different projectiles and/or targets. We discuss the different ingredients of the proposed picture in detail and present the results for hyperon polarization in the reactions such as $pp$, $K^-p$, $π^{\pm}p$, and $Σ^-p$ collisions. We compare the results with the available data and make predictions for future experiments.

Energy dependence of the single spin asymmetries in inclusive pion production processes

Recent data from E925 Collaboration at Brookheaven National Laboratory show a significant energy dependence of the single-spin left-right asymmetry in inclusive hadron production in hadron-hadron collisions. We analyzed the experimental results and show that the observed energy dependence can be reproduced naturally in the picture proposed in a previous Letter. We fixed all the parameters at the Fermilab E704 energy and calculate the asymmetry at the BNL E925 energy. We compare the results with the data and make predictions for experiments at even higher energies.
