Temperature of a trapped unitary Fermi gas at finite entropy

We present theoretical predictions for the equation of state of a harmonically-trapped Fermi gas in the unitary limit. Our calculations rest on a study of the equation of state of a uniform gas using three distinct perturbation schemes, compared to Monte-Carlo results. We show that in experiments the temperature can be usefully calibrated by making use of the entropy, which is invariant during an adiabatic conversion into the weakly-interacting limit of molecular BEC. We predict the entropy dependence of the equation of state.

A self-consistent theory of atomic Fermi gases with a Feshbach resonance at the superfluid transition

A self-consistent theory is derived to describe the BCS-BEC crossover for a strongly interacting Fermi gas with a Feshbach resonance. In the theory the fluctuation of the dressed molecules, consisting of both preformed Cooper-pairs and ``bare'' Feshbach molecules, has been included within a self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, beyond the Nozières and Schmitt-Rink strategy considered by Ohashi and Griffin. The resulting self-consistent equations are solved numerically to investigate the normal state properties of the crossover at various resonance widths. It is found that the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ increases monotonically at all widths as the effective interaction between atoms becomes more attractive. Furthermore, a residue factor $Z_m$ of the molecule's Green function and a complex effective mass have been determined, to characterize the fraction and lifetime of Feshbach molecules at $T_c$. Our many-body calculations of $Z_m$ agree qualitatively well with the recent measurments on the gas of $^6$Li atoms near the broad resonance at 834 Gauss. The crossover from narrow to broad resonances has also been studied.

Signature of Mott-insulator transition with ultra-cold fermions in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Using the exact Bethe ansatz solution of the Hubbard model and Luttinger liquid theory, we investigate the density profiles and collective modes of one-dimensional ultra-cold fermions confined in an optical lattice with a harmonic trapping potential. We determine a generic phase diagram in terms of a characteristic filling factor and a dimensionless coupling constant. The collective oscillations of the atomic mass density, a technique that is commonly used in experiments, provide a signature of the quantum phase transition from the metallic phase to the Mott-insulator phase. A detailed experimental implementation is proposed.

Collective modes and ballistic expansion of a Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

We evaluate the frequencies of collective modes and the anisotropic expansion rate of a harmonically trapped Fermi superfluid at varying coupling strengths across a Feshbach resonance driving a BCS-BEC crossover. The equations of motion for the superfluid are obtained from a microscopic mean-field expression for the compressibility and are solved within a scaling ansatz. Our results confirm non-monotonic behavior in the crossover region and are in quantitative agreement with current measurements of the transverse breathing mode by Kinast {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 150402 (2004)] and of the axial breathing mode by Bartenstein {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 203201 (2004)].

Collective oscillations of a confined Bose gas at finite temperature in the random-phase approximation

We present a theory for the linear dynamics of a weakly interacting Bose gas confined inside a harmonic trap at finite temperature. The theory treats the motions of the condensate and of the non-condensate on an equal footing within a generalized random-phase approximation, which ({\it i}) extends the second-order Beliaev-Popov approach by allowing for the dynamical coupling between fluctuations in the thermal cloud, and ({\it ii}) reduces to an earlier random-phase scheme when the anomalous density fluctuations are omitted. Numerical calculations of the low-lying spectra in the case of isotropic confinement show that the present theory obeys with high accuracy the generalized Kohn theorem for the dipolar excitations and demonstrate that combined normal and anomalous density fluctuations play an important role in the monopolar excitations of the condensate. Mean-field theory is instead found to yield accurate results for the quadrupolar modes of the condensate. Although the restriction to spherical confinement prevents quantitative comparisons with measured spectra, it appears that the non-mean field effects that we examine may be relevant to explain the features exhibited by the breathing mode as a function of temperature in the experiments carried out at JILA on a gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms.

Finite temperature effects on the collapse of trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures

By using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov theory, we present a detailed study of the mean-field stability of spherically trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures at finite temperature. We find that, by increasing the temperature, the critical particle number of bosons (or fermions) and the critical attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length increase, leading to a significant stabilization of the mixture.

Why only half of the fermionic atoms were converted to molecules by a Feshbach resonance?

In some recent experiments an ultracold gas of $^{40}$K$_2$ (or $^{6}$Li$_2$) molecules has been produced from a degenerate two-component Fermi gas of $^{40}$K (or $^{6}$Li) atoms by adiabatic passage through a Feshbach resonance. The maximum atom-molecule transfer efficiency is reported to be about 50%. We propose a simple microscopic model to characterize the ground state of the gas in the vicinity of the resonance, and show that the term describing the atom-molecule coupling is responsible for the observed efficiency 50%. Our result also suggests that the experiments have produced a molecular condensate.

Valence bond spin liquid state in two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Fermionic valence bond approach in terms of SU(4) representation is proposed to describe the $J_{1}-J_{2}$ frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) model on a {\it bipartite} square lattice. A uniform mean field solution without breaking the translational and rotational symmetries describes a valence bond spin liquid state, interpolating the two different AF ordered states in the large $J_{1}$ and large $J_{2}$ limits, respectively. This novel spin liquid state is gapless with the vanishing density of states at the Fermi nodal points. Moreover, a sharp resonance peak in the dynamic structure factor is predicted for momenta ${\bf q}=(0,0)$ and $(π,π)$ in the strongly frustrated limit $J_{2}/J_{1}\sim 1/2$, which can be checked by neutron scattering experiment.

Thermodynamics of a Trapped Bose-Fermi Mixture

By using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a dilute binary Bose-Fermi mixture confined in an isotropic harmonic trap. For mixtures with an attractive Bose-Fermi interaction we find a sizable enhancement of the condensate fraction and of the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation with respect to the predictions for a pure interacting Bose gas. Conversely, the influence of the repulsive Bose-Fermi interaction is less pronounced. The possible relevance of our results in current experiments on trapped $^{87}{\rm Rb}-^{40}${\rm K} mixtures is discussed.

Finite temperature excitations of a trapped Bose-Fermi mixture

We present a detailed study of the low-lying collective excitations of a spherically trapped Bose-Fermi mixture at finite temperature in the collisionless regime. The excitation frequencies of the condensate are calculated self-consistently using the static Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation. The frequency shifts and damping rates due to the coupled dynamics of the condensate, noncondensate, and degenerate Fermi gas are also taken into account by means of the random phase approximation and linear response theory. In our treatment, the dipole excitation remains close to the bare trapping frequency for all temperatures considered, and thus is consistent with the generalized Kohn theorem. We discuss in some detail the behavior of monopole and quadrupole excitations as a function of the Bose-Fermi coupling. At nonzero temperatures we find that, as the mixture moves towards spatial separation with increasing Bose-Fermi coupling, the damping rate of the monopole (quadrupole) excitation increases (decreases). This provides us a useful signature to identify the phase transition of spatial separation.

Expansion of a quantum degenerate boson-fermion mixture

We study the expansion of an ultracold boson-fermion mixture released from an elongated magnetic trap, in the context of a recent experiment at LENS (G. Roati et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 150403 (2002)). We discuss in some details the role of the boson-fermion interaction on the evolution of the radial-to-axial aspect ratio of the condensate, and show that it depends crucially on the relative dynamics of the condensate and degenerate Fermi gas in the radial direction, which is characterized by the ratio between the trapping frequency for fermions and for bosons. Our numerical simulations are in reasonable agreement with the experiment.

Collisionless and hydrodynamic excitations of trapped boson-fermion mixtures

Within a scaling ansatz formalism plus Thomas-Fermi approximation, we investigate the collective excitations of a harmonically trapped boson-fermion mixture in the collisionless and hydrodynamic limit at low temperature. Both the monopole and quadrupole modes are considered in the presence of spherical as well as cylindrically symmetric traps. In the spherical traps, the frequency of monopole mode coincides in the collisionless and hydrodynamic regime, suggesting that it might be undamped in all collisional regimes. In contrast, for the quadrupole mode, the frequency differs largely in these two limits. In particular, we find that in the hydrodynamic regime the quadrupole oscillations with equal bosonic and fermionic amplitudes generate an exact eigenstate of the system, regardless of the boson-fermion interaction. This resembles the Kohn mode for the dipole excitation. We discuss in some detail the behavior of monopole and quadrupole modes as a function of boson-fermion coupling at different boson-boson interaction strength. Analytic solutions valid at weak and medium fermion-boson coupling are also derived and discussed.

Interplay of quantum magnetic and potential scattering around Zn or Ni impurity ions in superconducting cuprates

To describe the scattering of superconducting quasiparticles from non-magnetic (Zn) or magnetic (Ni) impurities in optimally doped high T$_c$ cuprates, we propose an effective Anderson model Hamiltonian of a localized electron hybridizing with $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave BCS type superconducting quasiparticles with an attractive scalar potential at the impurity site. Due to the strong local antiferromagnetic couplings between the original Cu ions and their nearest neighbors, the localized electron in the Ni-doped materials is assumed to be on the impurity sites, while in the Zn-doped materials the localized electron is distributed over the four nearest neighbor sites of the impurities with a dominant $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetric form of the wave function. With Ni impurities, two resonant states are formed above the Fermi level in the local density of states at the impurity site, while for Zn impurities a sharp resonant peak below the Fermi level dominates in the local density of states at the Zn site, accompanied by a small and broad resonant state above the Fermi level mainly induced by the potential scattering. In both cases, there are no Kondo screening effects. The local density of states and their spatial distribution at the dominant resonant energy around the substituted impurities are calculated for both cases, and they are in good agreement with the experimental results of scanning tunneling microscopy in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ with Zn or Ni impurities, respectively.

Fragmented Condensate Ground State of Trapped Weakly Interacting Bosons in Two Dimensions

The ground state and its structure for a rotating, harmonically trapped N-Boson system with a weak repulsive contact interaction are studied as the angular momentum L increases up to 3N. We show that the ground state is generally a fragmented condensate due to angular momentum conservation. In response to an (arbitrarily weak) asymmetric perturbation of the trap, however, the fragmented ground state can be transformed into a single condensate state. We manifest this intrinsic instability by calculating the conditional probability distributions, which show patterns analogous to the boson density distributions predicted by mean-field theory.

Mesoscopic Kondo screening effect in a single-electron transistor embedded in a metallic ring

We study the Kondo screening effect generated by a single-electron transistor or quantum dot embedded in a small metallic ring. When the ring circumference $L$ becomes comparable to the fundamental length scale $ξ_K^0=\hbar \upsilon _F/T_K^0$ associated with the {\it bulk} Kondo tempe the Kondo resonance is strongly affected, depending on the total number of electrons ({\it modulo} 4) and magnetic flux threading the ring. The resulting Kondo-assisted persistent currents are also calculated in both Kondo and mixed valence regimes, and the maximum values are found in the crossover region.

Ground state properties of a trapped few-Boson system under rotation --beyond the "lowest Landau level" approximation--

We consider a harmonically trapped few-Boson system under rotation and investigate the ground state properties beyond the usual ``lowest Landau level'' approximation by using exact diagonalizations in a restricted Hilbert subspace. We find that both the effective interaction energy and density distribution are strongly affected by the two-body interaction strength.

Marginal Fermi liquid resonance induced by a quantum magnetic impurity in d-wave superconductors

We consider a model of an Anderson impurity embedded in a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting state to describe the low-energy excitations of cuprate superconductors doped with a small amount of magnetic impurities. Due to the Dirac-like energy dispersion, a sharp localized resonance above the Fermi energy, showing a marginal Fermi liquid behavior ($ω\ln ω$ as $ω\to 0$) is predicted for the impurity states. The same logarithmic dependence of self-energy and a linear frequency dependence of the relaxation rate are also derived for the conduction electrons, characterizing a new universality class for the strong coupling fixed point. At the resonant energies, the spatial distribution of the electron density of states around the magnetic impurity is calculated, to be confronted with measurements of the scanning tunneling microscopy on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca(Cu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)O$_{8+δ}$.

Aharonov-Bohm effect of excitons in nano-rings

The magnetic field effects on excitons in an InAs nano-ring are studied theoretically. By numerically diagonalizing the effective-mass Hamiltonian of the problem, which can be separated into terms in centre-of-mass and relative coordinates, we calculate the low-lying exciton energy levels and oscillator strengths as a function of the width of the ring and the strength of the external magnetic field. The analytical results are obtained for a narrow-width nano-ring in which the radial motion is the fastest one and adiabatically decoupled from the azimuthal motions. It is shown that in the presence of Coulomb correlation, the so called Aharonov-Bohm effect of excitons exists in a finite (but small) width nano-ring. However, when the ring width becomes large, the non-simply-connected geometry of nano-rings is destroyed and in turn yields the suppression of Aharonov-Bohm effect. The conditional probability distribution calculated for the low-lying exction states allows identification of the presence of Aharonov-Bohm effect. The linear optical susceptibility is also calculated as a function of the magnetic field, to be confronted with the future measurements of optical emission experiments on InAs nano-rings.
