Kink-Meson Inelastic Scattering

In this thesis, we first review the linearized soliton perturbation theory developed in recent years, which is particularly simple in the one-kink sector. Using it, the amplitude and probability of kink-meson inelastic scattering can be simplified into a perturbative problem in the kink frame. Although the Sine-Gordon soliton and $ϕ^4$ kink, which people are usually interested in, are both reflectionless kinks, in order to consider more general cases, we study quantum reflective kinks and find that the amplitude of meson wave packets at different positions during propagation corresponds to the reflection and transmission coefficients of particles scattered by symmetric potential barriers or potential wells in quantum mechanics. We calculate the reduced inner product of the kink states to solve the infrared divergence problem of non-normalizable states. Then we consider the inelastic scattering of a meson off of a kink in a (1+1)-dimensional scalar quantum field theory. At leading order there are three inelastic scattering processes: (1) meson multiplication (the final state is two mesons and a kink); (2) Stokes scattering (the final state is a meson and an excited kink); (3) anti-Stokes scattering (the initial kink is excited and the final kink is de-excited). For the first time, we calculate the leading-order probabilities of these three processes and the differential probabilities for final-state mesons with different momenta. We first obtain general results for arbitrary scalar kinks and then apply them to the kinks of the $ϕ^4$ double well model to obtain analytical and numerical results. Finally, we believe that our method can be generalized to higher dimensions, such as the case of monopoles.

Efficient and Effective Deep Multi-view Subspace Clustering

Recent multi-view subspace clustering achieves impressive results utilizing deep networks, where the self-expressive correlation is typically modeled by a fully connected (FC) layer. However, they still suffer from two limitations. i) The parameter scale of the FC layer is quadratic to sample numbers, resulting in high time and memory costs that significantly degrade their feasibility in large-scale datasets. ii) It is under-explored to extract a unified representation that simultaneously satisfies minimal sufficiency and discriminability. To this end, we propose a novel deep framework, termed Efficient and Effective deep Multi-View Subspace Clustering (E$^2$MVSC). Instead of a parameterized FC layer, we design a Relation-Metric Net that decouples network parameter scale from sample numbers for greater computational efficiency. Most importantly, the proposed method devises a multi-type auto-encoder to explicitly decouple consistent, complementary, and superfluous information from every view, which is supervised by a soft clustering assignment similarity constraint. Following information bottleneck theory and the maximal coding rate reduction principle, a sufficient yet minimal unified representation can be obtained, as well as pursuing intra-cluster aggregation and inter-cluster separability within it. Extensive experiments show that E$^2$MVSC yields comparable results to existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance in various types of multi-view datasets.

System for Analysis of Wind Collocations (SAWC): A Novel Archive and Collocation Software Application for the Intercomparison of Winds from Multiple Observing Platforms

Accurate atmospheric 3D wind observations are a high priority in the science community. To address this requirement and to support researchers' needs to acquire and analyze wind data from multiple sources, the System for Analysis of Wind Collocations (SAWC) was jointly developed by NOAA/NESDIS/STAR, UMD/ESSIC/CISESS, and UW-Madison/CIMSS. SAWC encompasses a multi-year archive of global 3D winds observed by Aeolus, sondes, aircraft, stratospheric superpressure balloons, and satellite-derived atmospheric motion vectors, archived and uniformly formatted in netCDF for public consumption; identified pairings between select datasets collocated in space and time; and a downloadable software application developed for users to interactively collocate and statistically compare wind observations based on their research needs. The utility of SAWC is demonstrated by conducting a one-year (September 2019-August 2020) evaluation of Aeolus level-2B (L2B) winds (Baseline 11 L2B processor version). Observations from four archived conventional wind datasets are collocated with Aeolus. Recommended quality controls are applied. Wind comparisons are assessed using the SAWC collocation application. Comparison statistics are stratified by season, geographic region, and Aeolus observing mode. The results highlight the value of SAWC's capabilities, from product validation through intercomparison studies to the evaluation of data usage in applications and advances in the global Earth observing architecture

Real-projective-plane hybrid-order topological insulator realized in phononic crystals

The manifold of the fundamental domain of the Brillouin zone is always considered to be a torus. However, under the synthetic gauge field, the Brillouin manifold can be modified by the projective symmetries, resulting in unprecedented topological properties. Here, we realize a real-projective-plane hybrid-order topological insulator in a phononic crystal by introducing the Z_2 gauge field. Such insulator hosts two momentum-space non-symmorphic reflection symmetries, which change the Brillouin manifold from a torus to a real projective plane. These symmetries can simultaneously lead to Klein-bottle and quadrupole topologies in different bulk gaps. The non-symmorphic reflection symmetries on Brillouin real projective plane, edge states of Klein-bottle insulator, and corner states of quadrupole insulator are observed. These results evidence the hybrid-order topology on Brillouin manifold beyond the torus, and enrich the topological physics.

Elastic Kink-Meson Scattering

In classical field theory, radiation does not reflect off of reflectionless kinks. In quantum field theory, radiation quanta, called mesons, can be reflected. We provide a general analytical formula for the leading order amplitude and probability for the elastic scattering of mesons off of reflectionless quantum kinks. In the case of the Sine-Gordon model we verify that, due to a cancellation of six contributing processes, our general formula yields an amplitude of zero, as is required by integrability.

Robust Domain Misinformation Detection via Multi-modal Feature Alignment

Social media misinformation harms individuals and societies and is potentialized by fast-growing multi-modal content (i.e., texts and images), which accounts for higher "credibility" than text-only news pieces. Although existing supervised misinformation detection methods have obtained acceptable performances in key setups, they may require large amounts of labeled data from various events, which can be time-consuming and tedious. In turn, directly training a model by leveraging a publicly available dataset may fail to generalize due to domain shifts between the training data (a.k.a. source domains) and the data from target domains. Most prior work on domain shift focuses on a single modality (e.g., text modality) and ignores the scenario where sufficient unlabeled target domain data may not be readily available in an early stage. The lack of data often happens due to the dynamic propagation trend (i.e., the number of posts related to fake news increases slowly before catching the public attention). We propose a novel robust domain and cross-modal approach (\textbf{RDCM}) for multi-modal misinformation detection. It reduces the domain shift by aligning the joint distribution of textual and visual modalities through an inter-domain alignment module and bridges the semantic gap between both modalities through a cross-modality alignment module. We also propose a framework that simultaneously considers application scenarios of domain generalization (in which the target domain data is unavailable) and domain adaptation (in which unlabeled target domain data is available). Evaluation results on two public multi-modal misinformation detection datasets (Pheme and Twitter Datasets) evince the superiority of the proposed model. The formal implementation of this paper can be found in this link: https://github.com/less-and-less-bugs/RDCM

Roadmap on Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

In recent years, the field of metal-halide perovskite emitters has rapidly emerged as a new community in solid-state lighting. Their exceptional optoelectronic properties have contributed to the rapid rise in external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) from <1% (in 2014) to approaching 30% (in 2023) across a wide range of wavelengths. However, several challenges still hinder their commercialization, including the relatively low EQEs of blue/white devices, limited EQEs in large-area devices, poor device stability, as well as the toxicity of the easily accessible lead components and the solvents used in the synthesis and processing of PeLEDs. This roadmap addresses the current and future challenges in PeLEDs across fundamental and applied research areas, by sharing the community's perspectives. This work will provide the field with practical guidelines to advance PeLED development and facilitate more rapid commercialization.

Vision meets mmWave Radar: 3D Object Perception Benchmark for Autonomous Driving

Sensor fusion is crucial for an accurate and robust perception system on autonomous vehicles. Most existing datasets and perception solutions focus on fusing cameras and LiDAR. However, the collaboration between camera and radar is significantly under-exploited. The incorporation of rich semantic information from the camera, and reliable 3D information from the radar can potentially achieve an efficient, cheap, and portable solution for 3D object perception tasks. It can also be robust to different lighting or all-weather driving scenarios due to the capability of mmWave radars. In this paper, we introduce the CRUW3D dataset, including 66K synchronized and well-calibrated camera, radar, and LiDAR frames in various driving scenarios. Unlike other large-scale autonomous driving datasets, our radar data is in the format of radio frequency (RF) tensors that contain not only 3D location information but also spatio-temporal semantic information. This kind of radar format can enable machine learning models to generate more reliable object perception results after interacting and fusing the information or features between the camera and radar.

Interpretable Modeling of Single-cell perturbation Responses to Novel Drugs Using Cycle Consistence Learning

Phenotype-based screening has attracted much attention for identifying cell-active compounds. Transcriptional and proteomic profiles of cell population or single cells are informative phenotypic measures of cellular responses to perturbations. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning framework based on encoder-decoder architecture that maps the initial cellular states to a latent space, in which we assume the effects of drug perturbation on cellular states follow linear additivity. Next, we introduced the cycle consistency constraints to enforce that initial cellular state subjected to drug perturbations would produce the perturbed cellular responses, and, conversely, removal of drug perturbation from the perturbed cellular states would restore the initial cellular states. The cycle consistency constraints and linear modeling in latent space enable to learn interpretable and transferable drug perturbation representations, so that our model can predict cellular response to unseen drugs. We validated our model on three different types of datasets, including bulk transcriptional responses, bulk proteomic responses, and single-cell transcriptional responses to drug perturbations. The experimental results show that our model achieves better performance than existing state-of-the-art methods.

Cross-domain feature disentanglement for interpretable modeling of tumor microenvironment impact on drug response

High-throughput screening technology has facilitated the generation of large-scale drug responses across hundreds of cancer cell lines. However, there exists significant discrepancy between in vitro cell lines and actual tumors in vivo in terms of their response to drug treatments, because of tumors comprise of complex cellular compositions and histopathology structure, known as tumor microenvironment (TME), which greatly influences the drug cytotoxicity against tumor cells. To date, no study has focused on modeling the impact of the TME on clinical drug response. This paper proposed a domain adaptation network for feature disentanglement to separate representations of cancer cells and TME of a tumor in patients. Two denoising autoencoders were separately used to extract features from cell lines (source domain) and tumors (target domain) for partial domain alignment and feature decoupling. The specific encoder was enforced to extract information only about TME. Moreover, to ensure generalizability to novel drugs, we applied a graph attention network to learn the latent representation of drugs, allowing us to linearly model the drug perturbation on cellular state in latent space. We calibrated our model on a benchmark dataset and demonstrated its superior performance in predicting clinical drug response and dissecting the influence of the TME on drug efficacy.

EGRC-Net: Embedding-induced Graph Refinement Clustering Network

Existing graph clustering networks heavily rely on a predefined yet fixed graph, which can lead to failures when the initial graph fails to accurately capture the data topology structure of the embedding space. In order to address this issue, we propose a novel clustering network called Embedding-Induced Graph Refinement Clustering Network (EGRC-Net), which effectively utilizes the learned embedding to adaptively refine the initial graph and enhance the clustering performance. To begin, we leverage both semantic and topological information by employing a vanilla auto-encoder and a graph convolution network, respectively, to learn a latent feature representation. Subsequently, we utilize the local geometric structure within the feature embedding space to construct an adjacency matrix for the graph. This adjacency matrix is dynamically fused with the initial one using our proposed fusion architecture. To train the network in an unsupervised manner, we minimize the Jeffreys divergence between multiple derived distributions. Additionally, we introduce an improved approximate personalized propagation of neural predictions to replace the standard graph convolution network, enabling EGRC-Net to scale effectively. Through extensive experiments conducted on nine widely-used benchmark datasets, we demonstrate that our proposed methods consistently outperform several state-of-the-art approaches. Notably, EGRC-Net achieves an improvement of more than 11.99\% in Adjusted Rand Index (ARI) over the best baseline on the DBLP dataset. Furthermore, our scalable approach exhibits a 10.73% gain in ARI while reducing memory usage by 33.73% and decreasing running time by 19.71%. The code for EGRC-Net will be made publicly available at \url{https://github.com/ZhihaoPENG-CityU/EGRC-Net}.

Indirect measurement of infrared absorption spectrum through thermal emission of meta-cavity array

Controlling thermal emission is essential for various infrared spectroscopy applications. Metasurfaces can be utilized to control multiple degrees of freedom of thermal emission, enabling the compact thermal emission materials and devices. Infrared spectroscopy such as FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), usually requires external infrared radiation source and complex spectroscopic devices for absorption spectrum measurement, which hinders the implementation of integrated compact and portable measurement equipment. Measuring absorption spectrum through the thermal emission of pixelated thermal emitter array can facilitate the integration and miniaturization of measurement setup, which is highly demanded for on-chip spectroscopy applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an integrated technology that allows for indirect measurement of the absorption spectrum through the thermal emission of meta-cavity array. This indirect measurement method opens a new avenue for compact infrared spectroscopy analysis.

Probabilistic Categorical Adversarial Attack & Adversarial Training

The existence of adversarial examples brings huge concern for people to apply Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) in safety-critical tasks. However, how to generate adversarial examples with categorical data is an important problem but lack of extensive exploration. Previously established methods leverage greedy search method, which can be very time-consuming to conduct successful attack. This also limits the development of adversarial training and potential defenses for categorical data. To tackle this problem, we propose Probabilistic Categorical Adversarial Attack (PCAA), which transfers the discrete optimization problem to a continuous problem that can be solved efficiently by Projected Gradient Descent. In our paper, we theoretically analyze its optimality and time complexity to demonstrate its significant advantage over current greedy based attacks. Moreover, based on our attack, we propose an efficient adversarial training framework. Through a comprehensive empirical study, we justify the effectiveness of our proposed attack and defense algorithms.

An Implementation of Multimodal Fusion System for Intelligent Digital Human Generation

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), digital humans have attracted more and more attention and are expected to achieve a wide range of applications in several industries. Then, most of the existing digital humans still rely on manual modeling by designers, which is a cumbersome process and has a long development cycle. Therefore, facing the rise of digital humans, there is an urgent need for a digital human generation system combined with AI to improve development efficiency. In this paper, an implementation scheme of an intelligent digital human generation system with multimodal fusion is proposed. Specifically, text, speech and image are taken as inputs, and interactive speech is synthesized using large language model (LLM), voiceprint extraction, and text-to-speech conversion techniques. Then the input image is age-transformed and a suitable image is selected as the driving image. Then, the modification and generation of digital human video content is realized by digital human driving, novel view synthesis, and intelligent dressing techniques. Finally, we enhance the user experience through style transfer, super-resolution, and quality evaluation. Experimental results show that the system can effectively realize digital human generation. Global Structure-Aware Diffusion Process for Low-Light Image Enhancement

This paper studies a diffusion-based framework to address the low-light image enhancement problem. To harness the capabilities of diffusion models, we delve into this intricate process and advocate for the regularization of its inherent ODE-trajectory. To be specific, inspired by the recent research that low curvature ODE-trajectory results in a stable and effective diffusion process, we formulate a curvature regularization term anchored in the intrinsic non-local structures of image data, i.e., global structure-aware regularization, which gradually facilitates the preservation of complicated details and the augmentation of contrast during the diffusion process. This incorporation mitigates the adverse effects of noise and artifacts resulting from the diffusion process, leading to a more precise and flexible enhancement. To additionally promote learning in challenging regions, we introduce an uncertainty-guided regularization technique, which wisely relaxes constraints on the most extreme regions of the image. Experimental evaluations reveal that the proposed diffusion-based framework, complemented by rank-informed regularization, attains distinguished performance in low-light enhancement. The outcomes indicate substantial advancements in image quality, noise suppression, and contrast amplification in comparison with state-of-the-art methods. We believe this innovative approach will stimulate further exploration and advancement in low-light image processing, with potential implications for other applications of diffusion models. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/jinnh/GSAD.

Single-Cell Multimodal Prediction via Transformers

The recent development of multimodal single-cell technology has made the possibility of acquiring multiple omics data from individual cells, thereby enabling a deeper understanding of cellular states and dynamics. Nevertheless, the proliferation of multimodal single-cell data also introduces tremendous challenges in modeling the complex interactions among different modalities. The recently advanced methods focus on constructing static interaction graphs and applying graph neural networks (GNNs) to learn from multimodal data. However, such static graphs can be suboptimal as they do not take advantage of the downstream task information; meanwhile GNNs also have some inherent limitations when deeply stacking GNN layers. To tackle these issues, in this work, we investigate how to leverage transformers for multimodal single-cell data in an end-to-end manner while exploiting downstream task information. In particular, we propose a scMoFormer framework which can readily incorporate external domain knowledge and model the interactions within each modality and cross modalities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that scMoFormer achieves superior performance on various benchmark datasets. Remarkably, scMoFormer won a Kaggle silver medal with the rank of 24/1221 (Top 2%) without ensemble in a NeurIPS 2022 competition. Our implementation is publicly available at Github.

On the Generalization of Training-based ChatGPT Detection Methods

ChatGPT is one of the most popular language models which achieve amazing performance on various natural language tasks. Consequently, there is also an urgent need to detect the texts generated ChatGPT from human written. One of the extensively studied methods trains classification models to distinguish both. However, existing studies also demonstrate that the trained models may suffer from distribution shifts (during test), i.e., they are ineffective to predict the generated texts from unseen language tasks or topics. In this work, we aim to have a comprehensive investigation on these methods' generalization behaviors under distribution shift caused by a wide range of factors, including prompts, text lengths, topics, and language tasks. To achieve this goal, we first collect a new dataset with human and ChatGPT texts, and then we conduct extensive studies on the collected dataset. Our studies unveil insightful findings which provide guidance for developing future methodologies or data collection strategies for ChatGPT detection.
