EV Dispatch Control for Supplementary Frequency Regulation Considering the Expectation of EV Owners

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are promising to provide frequency regulation services due to their fast regulating characteristics. However, when EVs participate in Supplementary Frequency Regulation (SFR), it is challenging to simultaneously achieve the dispatch of the control center and the expected State of Charge (SOC) levels of EV batteries. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) control strategy, in which an uncertain dispatch is implemented in the control center without detailed EV charging/discharging information. The regulation from the control center is achieved by allocating the regulation task within the frequency regulation capacity (FRC) of EVs. The expected SOC levels of EV batteries are guaranteed by a real-time correction of their scheduled V2G power in EV charging stations. Simulations on an interconnected two-area power system validate the effectiveness of the proposed V2G control in achieving both the frequency regulation and the expected SOC levels of EVs.

A globally convergent numerical method for a 3D coefficient inverse problem with a single measurement of multi-frequency data

The goal of this paper is to reconstruct spatially distributed dielectric constants from complex-valued scattered wave field by solving a 3D coefficient inverse problem for the Helmholtz equation at multi-frequencies. The data are generated by only a single direction of the incident plane wave. To solve this inverse problem, a globally convergent algorithm is analytically developed. We prove that this algorithm provides a good approximation for the exact coefficient without any \textit{a priori} knowledge of any point in a small neighborhood of that coefficient. This is the main advantage of our method, compared with classical approaches using optimization schemes. Numerical results are presented for both computationally simulated data and experimental data. Potential applications of this problem are in detection and identification of explosive-like targets.

Numerical Solution of a Coefficient Inverse Problem with Multi-Frequency Experimental Raw Data by a Globally Convergent Algorithm

We analyze in this paper the performance of a newly developed globally convergent numerical method for a coefficient inverse problem for the case of multi-frequency experimental backscatter data associated to a single incident wave. These data were collected using a microwave scattering facility at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The challenges for the inverse problem under the consideration are not only from its high nonlinearity and severe ill-posedness but also from the facts that the amount of the measured data is minimal and that these raw data are contaminated by a significant amount of noise, due to a non-ideal experimental setup. This setup is motivated by our target application in detecting and identifying explosives. We show in this paper how the raw data can be preprocessed and successfully inverted using our inversion method. More precisely, we are able to reconstruct the dielectric constants and the locations of the scattering objects with a good accuracy, without using any advanced \emph{a priori} knowledge of their physical and geometrical properties.

Researches on Dynamic Load Balancing Algorithms and hp-Adaptivity in 3-D Parallel Adaptive Finite Element Computations

This work is related to PHG (Parallel Hierarchical Grid). PHG is a toolbox for developing parallel adaptive finite element programs, which is under active development at the State Key Laboratory of Scientific and Engineering Computing. The main results of this work are as follows. 1) For the tetrahedral meshes used in PHG, under reasonable assumptions, we proved the existence of through-vertex Hamiltonian paths between arbitrary two vertices, as well as the existence of through-vertex Hamiltonian cycles, and designed an efficient algorithm with linear complexity for constructing through-vertex Hamiltonian paths. The resulting algorithm has been implemented in PHG, and is used for ordering elements in the coarsest mesh for the refinement tree mesh partitioning algorithm. 2) We designed encoding and decoding algorithms for high dimensional Hilbert order. Hilbert order has good locality, and it has wide applications in various fields in computer science, such as memory management, database, and dynamic load balancing. 3) We implemented refinement tree and space filling curve based mesh partitioning algorithms in PHG, and designed the dynamic load balancing module of PHG. The refinement tree based partitioning algorithm was originally proposed by Mitchell, the one implemented in PHG was improved in several aspects. The space filling curve based mesh partitioning function in PHG can use either Hilbert or Morton space filling curve. 4) We studied existing hp-adaptive strategies in the literature, and proposed a new strategy. Numerical experiments show that our new strategy achieves exponential convergence, and is superior, in both precision of the solutions and computation time, to the strategy compared. This part of the work also serves to validate the hp-adaptivity module of PHG.

On Optimizing Hierarchical Modulation in AWGN channel

Hierarchical modulation (HM) is able to provide different levels of protection for data streams and achieve a rate region that cannot be realized by traditional orthogonal schemes, such as time division (TD). Nevertheless, criterions and algorithms for general HM design are not available in existing literatures. In this paper, we jointly optimize the constellation positions and binary labels for HM to be used in additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) capacity, our main purpose is to maximize the rate of one data stream, with power constrains and the constrain that the rate of other data streams should be larger than given thresholds. Multi-start interior-point algorithm is used to carry out the constellation optimization problems and methods to reduce optimization complexity are also proposed in this paper. Numerical results verify the performance gains of optimized HM compared with optimized quadrature amplidude modulation (QAM) based HM and other orthogonal transmission methods.

Synthetic Weyl points in generalized parameter space and their topological properties

Weyl fermions1 do not appear in nature as elementary particles, but they are now found to exist as nodal points in the band structure of electronic and classical wave crystals. Novel phenomena such as Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly have fueled the interest of these topological points which are frequently perceived as monopoles in momentum space. Here, we demonstrate that generalized Weyl points can exist in a parameter space and we report the first observation of such nodal points in one-dimensional photonic crystals in the optical range. The reflection phase inside the band gap of a truncated photonic crystal exhibits vortexes in the parameter space where the Weyl points are defined and they share the same topological charges as the Weyl points. These vortexes guarantee the existence of interface states, the trajectory of which can be understood as "Fermi arcs" emerging from the Weyl nodes.

Numerical Simulation of Multi-phase Flow in Porous Media on Parallel Computers

A parallel reservoir simulator has been developed, which is designed for large-scale black oil simulations. It handles three phases, including water, oil and gas, and three components, including water, oil and gas. This simulator can calculate traditional reservoir models and naturally fractured models. Various well operations are supported, such as water flooding, gas flooding and polymer flooding. The operation constraints can be fixed bottom-hole pressure, a fixed fluid rate, and combinations of them. The simulator is based on our in-house platform, which provides grids, cell-centred data, linear solvers, preconditioners and well modeling. The simulator and the platform use MPI for communications among computation nodes. Our simulator is capable of simulating giant reservoir models with hundreds of millions of grid cells. Numerical simulations show that our simulator matches with commercial simulators and it has excellent scalability.

Stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear damping: martingale solution, strong solution and small time large deviation principles

In this paper, by using classical Faedo-Galerkin approximation and compactness method, the existence of martingale solutions for the stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear damping is obtained. The existence and uniqueness of strong solution are proved for $β> 3$ with any $α>0$ and $α\geq \frac12$ as $β= 3$. Meanwhile, a small time large deviation principle for the stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equation with damping is proved for $β> 3$ with any $α>0$ and $α\geq \frac12$ as $β= 3$.

The Fadell-Rabinowitz index and multiplicity of non-contractible closed geodesics on Finsler $\mathbb{R}P^{n}$

In this paper, we prove that for every irreversible Finsler $n$-dimensional real projective space $(\mathbb{R}P^n,F)$ with reversibility $λ$ and flag curvature $K$ satisfying $\frac{16}{9}\left(\fracλ{1+λ}\right)^2<K\le 1$ with $λ<3$, there exist at least $n-1$ non-contractible closed geodesics. In addition, if the metric $F$ is bumpy with $\frac{64}{25}\left(\fracλ{1+λ}\right)^2<K\le 1$ and $λ<\frac{5}{3}$, then there exist at least $2[\frac{n+1}{2}]$ non-contractible closed geodesics, which is the optimal lower bound due to Katok's example. The main ingredients of the proofs are the Fadell-Rabinowitz index theory of non-contractible closed geodesics on $(\mathbb{R}P^n,F)$ and the $S^1$-equivariant Poincar$\acute{e}$ series of the non-contractible component of the free loop space on $\mathbb{R}P^n$.

Experimental Quantum Digital Signature over 102 km

Quantum digital signature (QDS) is an approach to guarantee the nonrepudiation, unforgeability and transferability of a signature with the information-theoretical security. All previous experimental realizations of QDS relied on an unrealistic assumption of secure channels and the longest distance is only several kilometers. Here, we have experimentally demonstrated a recently proposed QDS protocol without any secure channel. Exploiting the decoy state modulation, we have successfully signed one bit message through up to 102 km optical fiber. Furthermore, we continuously run the system to sign the longer message "USTC" with 32 bit at the distance of 51 km. Our results pave the way towards the practical application of QDS.

Nonlinear Model Reduction in Power Systems by Balancing of Empirical Controllability and Observability Covariances

In this paper, nonlinear model reduction for power systems is performed by the balancing of empirical controllability and observability covariances that are calculated around the operating region. Unlike existing model reduction methods, the external system does not need to be linearized but is directly dealt with as a nonlinear system. A transformation is found to balance the controllability and observability covariances in order to determine which states have the greatest contribution to the input-output behavior. The original system model is then reduced by Galerkin projection based on this transformation. The proposed method is tested and validated on a system comprised of a 16-machine 68-bus system and an IEEE 50-machine 145-bus system. The results show that by using the proposed model reduction the calculation efficiency can be greatly improved; at the same time, the obtained state trajectories are close to those for directly simulating the whole system or partitioning the system while not performing reduction. Compared with the balanced truncation method based on a linearized model, the proposed nonlinear model reduction method can guarantee higher accuracy and similar calculation efficiency. It is shown that the proposed method is not sensitive to the choice of the matrices for calculating the empirical covariances.

Dynamic State Estimation for Multi-Machine Power System by Unscented Kalman Filter with Enhanced Numerical Stability

In this paper, in order to enhance the numerical stability of the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) used for power system dynamic state estimation, a new UKF with guaranteed positive semidifinite estimation error covariance (UKF-GPS) is proposed and compared with five existing approaches, including UKF-schol, UKF-$κ$, UKF-modified, UKF-$ΔQ$, and the square-root unscented Kalman filter (SR-UKF). These methods and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) are tested by performing dynamic state estimation on WSCC 3-machine 9-bus system and NPCC 48-machine 140-bus system. For WSCC system, all methods obtain good estimates. However, for NPCC system, both EKF and the classic UKF fail. It is found that UKF-schol, UKF-$κ$, and UKF-$ΔQ$ do not work well in some estimations while UKF-GPS works well in most cases. UKF-modified and SR-UKF can always work well, indicating their better scalability mainly due to the enhanced numerical stability.

An Accretion Disc-Irradiation Hybrid Model for The Optical/UV Variability in Radio-Quiet Quasars

The optical/ultraviolet (UV) variability of quasars has been discovered to be correlated with other quasar properties, such as luminosity, black hole mass and rest-frame wavelength. However, the origin of variability has been a puzzle so far. In this work, we upgrade the accretion disc model (Li & Cao 2008), which assumed the variability is caused by the change of global mass accretion rate, by constraining the disc size to match the viscous timescale of accretion disc to the variability timescale observed and by including the irradiation/X-ray reprocessing to make the emitted spectrum become steeper. We find this hybrid model can reproduce the observed bluer-when-brighter trend quite well, which is used to validate the theoretical model by several works recently. The traditional correlation between the variability amplitude and rest-frame wavelength can also be well fitted by our model. In addition, a weak positive correlation between variability amplitude and black hole mass is present, qualitatively consistent with recent observations.

Measurement device independent quantum key distribution over 404 km optical fibre

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can provide unconditional secure communication between two distant parties. Although the significance of QKD is undisputed, its feasibility has been questioned because of certain limitations in the practical application of real-life QKD systems. It is a common belief the lack of perfect single-photon source and the existence of detection loss will handicap the feasibility of QKD by creating security loopholes and distance limitations. The measurement device independent QKD (MDIQKD) with decoy-state method removes the security threats from both the imperfect single-photon source and the detection loss. Lengthening the distance and improving the key rate of QKD with such a superior method is thus the central issue in the practical application of QKD. Here, we report the results of MDIQKD over 404 km of ultralow-loss optical fibre and 311 km of standard optical fibre by employing an optimized four-intensity decoy-state method. This record-breaking implementation of MDIQKD method not only provides a new distance record for both MDIQKD and all types of QKD systems, more significantly, it achieves a distance that the traditional BB84 QKD would not be able to achieve with the same detection devices even with ideal single-phone sources. For the first time, our work demonstrates that with the MDIQKD method, imperfect devices can achieve better results than what ideal sources could have achieved. This work represents a significant step towards proving and developing a feasible long-distance QKD.

Parallel Triangular Solvers on GPU

In this paper, we investigate GPU based parallel triangular solvers systematically. The parallel triangular solvers are fundamental to incomplete LU factorization family preconditioners and algebraic multigrid solvers. We develop a new matrix format suitable for GPU devices. Parallel lower triangular solvers and upper triangular solvers are developed for this new data structure. With these solvers, ILU preconditioners and domain decomposition preconditioners are developed. Numerical results show that we can speed triangular solvers around seven times faster.

A globally convergent method for a 3-D inverse medium problem for the generalized Helmholtz equation

A 3-D inverse medium problem in the frequency domain is considered. Another name for this problem is Coefficient Inverse Problem. The goal is to reconstruct spatially distributed dielectric constants from scattering data. Potential applications are in detection and identification of explosive-like targets. A single incident plane wave and multiple frequencies are used. A new numerical method is proposed. A theorem is proved, which claims that a small neigborhood of the exact solution of that problem is reached by this method without any advanced knowledge of that neighborhood. We call this property of that numerical method "global convergence". Results of numerical experiments for the case of the backscattering data are presented.
