Low-momentum relativistic nucleon-nucleon potentials I: Nuclear matter

A series of relativistic one-boson-exchange potentials for two-nucleon system, denoted as OBEP$Λ$, is constructed with a momentum cutoff $Λ$ ranging from $\infty$ to 2 fm$^{-1}$. These potentials are developed by simultaneous fitting to nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) scattering phase shifts, low-energy scattering length, effective range, and the binding energy of the deuteron. The momentum-space matrix elements of the low-momentum OBEP$Λ$ ($Λ\leqslant 3$ fm$^{-1}$) demonstrate consistency with the universal behaviors observed in other realistic $NN$ potentials evolved by renormalization group methods. These OBEP$Λ$s are applied to calculate the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) within either the nonrelativistic (NR) Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) or relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) frameworks. The results show that the saturation properties of SNM are reproduced qualitatively from the RBHF calculation, but not from the NR-BHF calculation. This study highlights the relativistic mechanism in explaining the saturation properties of nuclear matter. The remaining discrepancy in reproducing empirical saturation properties in the RBHF calculation using the OBEP$Λ$s signals the necessity of including three-nucleon correlations or genuine three-nucleon forces.

Neutron-proton effective mass splitting in neutron-rich matter

Nucleon effective masses in neutron-rich matter are studied with the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory in the full Dirac space. The neutron and proton effective masses for symmetric nuclear matter are 0.80 times rest mass, which agrees well with the empirical values. In neutron-rich matter, the effective mass of the neutron is found larger than that of the proton, and the neutron-proton effective mass splittings at the empirical saturation density are predicted as $0.187α$ with $α$ being the isospin asymmetry parameter. The result is compared to other ab initio calculations and is consistent with the constraints from the nuclear reaction and structure measurements, such as the nucleon-nucleus scattering, the giant resonances of $^{208}$Pb, and the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem with systematics of nuclear symmetry energy and its slope. The predictions of the neutron-proton effective mass splitting from the RBHF theory in the full Dirac space might be helpful to constrain the isovector parameters in phenomenological density functionals.

Properties of $^{208}$Pb predicted from the relativistic equation of state in the full Dirac space

Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory in the full Dirac space allows one to determine uniquely the momentum dependence of scalar and vector components of the single-particle potentials. In order to extend this new method from nuclear matter to finite nuclei, as a first step, properties of $^{208}$Pb are explored by using the microscopic equation of state for asymmetric nuclear matter and a liquid droplet model. The neutron and proton density distributions, the binding energies, the neutron and proton radii, and the neutron skin thickness in $^{208}$Pb are calculated. In order to further compare the charge densities predicted from the RBHF theory in the full Dirac space with the experimental charge densities, the differential cross sections and the electric charge form factors in the elastic electron-nucleus scattering are obtained by using the phase-shift analysis method. The results from the RBHF theory are in good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the uncertainty arising from variations of the surface term parameter $f_0$ in the liquid droplet model is also discussed.

Nuclear Matter and Neutron Stars from Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock Theory

The momentum and isospin dependence of the single-particle potential for the in-medium nucleon are the key quantities in the Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory. It depends on how to extract the scalar and the vector components of the single-particle potential inside nuclear matter. In contrast to the RBHF calculations in the Dirac space with the positive-energy states (PESs) only, the single-particle potential can be determined in a unique way by the RBHF theory together with the negative-energy states (NESs), i.e., the RBHF theory in the full Dirac space. The saturation properties of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter in the full Dirac space are systematically investigated based on the realistic Bonn nucleon-nucleon potentials. In order to further specify the importance of the calculations in the full Dirac space, the neutron star properties are investigated. The direct URCA process in neutron star cooling will happen at density $ρ_{\rm{DURCA}}=0.43,~0.48,~0.52$ fm$^{-3}$ with the proton fractions $Y_{p,\rm{DURCA}}=0.13$. The radii of a $1.4M_\odot$ neutron star are predicated as $R_{1.4M_\odot}=11.97,~12.13,~12.27$ km, and their tidal deformabilities are $Λ_{1.4M_\odot}=376,~405,~433$ for potential Bonn A, B, C. Comparing with the results obtained in the Dirac space with PESs only, full-Dirac-space RBHF calculation predicts the softest symmetry energy which would be more favored by the gravitational waves (GW) detection from GW170817. Furthermore, the results from full-Dirac-space RBHF theory are consistent with the recent astronomical observations of massive neutron stars and simultaneous mass-radius measurement.

Exploring universal characteristics of neutron star matter with relativistic \textit{ab initio} equations of state

Starting from the relativistic realistic nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions, a newly developed relativistic \textit{ab initio} method, i.e., the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory in the full Dirac space is employed to study the neutron star properties. First, the one-to-one correspondence relation for gravitational redshift and mass is established and used to infer the mass of isolated neutron stars combining the gravitational redshift measurements. Next, the ratio of the moment of inertia $I$ to $MR^2$ as a function of the compactness $M/R$ is obtained, which is consistent with the universal relations in the literature. The moment of inertia for $1.338M_\odot$ pulsar PSR J0737-3039A $I_{1.338M_\odot}$ is predicted to be 1.356$\times10^{45}$, 1.381$\times10^{45}$, and $1.407\times10^{45}\ \mathrm{g~cm^2}$ by the RBHF theory in the full Dirac space with $NN$ interactions Bonn A, B, and C, respectively. Finally, the quadrupole moment of neutron star is calculated under the slow-rotation and small-tidal-deformation approximation. The equation of states constructed by the RBHF theory in the full Dirac space, together with those by the projection method and momentum-independence approximation, conform to universal $I$-Love-$Q$ relations as well. By combing the tidal deformability from GW170817 and the universal relations from relativistic \textit{ab initio} methods, the moment of inertia of neutron star with 1.4 solar mass is also deduced as $I_{1.4M_\odot}=1.22^{+0.40}_{-0.25}\times 10^{45}\mathrm{g\ cm^2}$.

The population properties of spinning black holes using Gravitational-wave Transient Catalog 3

Binary black holes formed via different pathways are predicted to have distinct spin properties. Measuring these properties with gravitational waves provides an opportunity to unveil the origins of binary black holes. Recent work draws conflicting conclusions regarding the spin distribution observed by LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA (LVK). Some analyses suggest that a fraction of the observed black-hole spin vectors are significantly misaligned (by $>90^\circ$) relative to the orbital angular momentum. This has been interpreted to mean that some binaries in the LVK dataset are assembled dynamically in dense stellar environments. Other analyses find support for a sub-population of binaries with negligible spin and no evidence for significantly misaligned spin -- a result consistent with the field formation scenario. In this work, we study the spin properties of binary black holes in the third LVK gravitational-wave transient catalog. We find that there is insufficient data to resolve the existence of a sub-population of binaries with negligible black-hole spin (the presence of this sub-population is supported by a modest Bayes factor of 1.7). We find modest support for the existence of mergers with extreme spin tilt angles $> 90^\circ$ (the presence of extreme-tilt binaries is favored by a Bayes factor of 10.1). Only one thing is clear: at least some of the LVK binaries formed in the field. At most $89\%$ of binaries are assembled dynamically (99\% credibility), though, the true branching fraction could be much lower, even negligible.

Asymmetric Nuclear Matter and Neutron Star Properties in Relativistic ab initio Theory in the Full Dirac Space

The long-standing controversy about the isospin dependence of the effective Dirac mass in ab initio calculations of asymmetric nuclear matter is clarified by solving the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations in the full Dirac space. The symmetry energy and its slope parameter at the saturation density are $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ_0)=33.1$ MeV and $L=65.2$ MeV, in agreement with empirical and experimental values. Further applications predict the neutron star radius $R_{1.4M_\odot}\approx 12$ km and the maximum mass of a neutron star $M_{\text{max}}\leq 2.4M_\odot$.

Optimized Two-Baryon Operators in Lattice QCD

A set of optimized interpolating operators which are dominantly coupled to each eigenstate of two baryons on the lattice is constructed by the HAL QCD method. To test its validity, we consider heavy dibaryons $Ω_{3Q}Ω_{3Q}$ ($Q=s,c$) calculated by (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD simulations with nearly physical pion mass. The optimized two-baryon operators are shown to provide effective energies of the ground and excited states separately stable as a function of the Euclidean time. Also they agree to the eigenenergies in a finite lattice box obtained from the leading-order HAL QCD potential $V({\boldsymbol{r}})$ within statistical errors. The overlapping factors between the optimized sink operators and the state created by the wall-type source operator indicate that $V( \boldsymbol{r})$ can be reliably extracted, no matter whether the spacetime correlation of two baryons is dominated by the ground state or the excited state. It is suggested that the optimized set of operators is useful for variational studies of hadron-hadron interactions.

Finite volume analysis on systematics of the derivative expansion in HAL QCD method

We study the convergence of the derivative expansion in HAL QCD method from the finite volume analysis. Employing the (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD data obtained at nearly physical light quark masses $(m_π, m_K) \simeq (146, 525)$ MeV and the physical charm quark mass, we study two representative systems, $ΩΩ$ and $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ in the $^1S_0$ channel, where both systems were found to have a shallow bound state in our previous studies. The HAL QCD potentials are determined at the leading-order in the derivative expansion, from which finite-volume eigenmodes are obtained. Utilizing the eigenmode projection, we find that the correlation functions are dominated by the ground state (first excited state) in the case of $ΩΩ$ ($Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$). In both $ΩΩ$ and $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$, the spectra obtained from eigenmode-projected temporal correlators are found to be consistent with those from the HAL QCD potential for both the ground and first excited state. These results show that the derivative expansion is well converged in these systems, and also provide a first explicit evidence that the HAL QCD method enables us to reliably extract the binding energy of the ground state even from the correlator dominated by excited scattering states.

Most charming dibaryon near unitarity

We present a first study on a pair of triply charmed baryons, $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ in the $^1S_0$ channel, on the basis of the HAL QCD method. The measurements are perfomed on the $(2+1)$-flavor lattice QCD configurations with nearly physical light-quark masses and physical charm-quark mass. We show that the system with the Coulomb repulsion taking into account the charge form factor of $Ω_{ccc}$ leads to the scattering length $a^\mathrm{C}_0\simeq-19$ fm and the effective range $r^\mathrm{C}_\mathrm{eff}\simeq0.45$ fm, which indicates $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ is located in the unitary regime.

Dibaryon with highest charm number near unitarity from lattice QCD

A pair of triply charmed baryons, $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$, is studied as an ideal dibaryon system by (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD with nearly physical light-quark masses and the relativistic heavy quark action with the physical charm quark mass. The spatial baryon-baryon correlation is related to their scattering parameters on the basis of the HAL QCD method. The $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ in the ${^1S_0}$ channel taking into account the Coulomb repulsion with the charge form factor of $Ω_{ccc}$ leads to the scattering length $a^{\rm C}_0\simeq -19~\text{fm}$ and the effective range $r^{\rm C}_{\mathrm{eff}}\simeq 0.45~\text{fm}$. The ratio $r^{\rm C}_{\mathrm{eff}}/a^{\rm C}_0 \simeq -0.024$, whose magnitude is considerably smaller than that of the dineutron ($-0.149$), indicates that $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ is located in the unitary regime.

Following up the afterglow: strategy for X-ray observation triggered by gravitational wave events

The multi-messenger observation of compact binary coalescence promises great scientific treasure. However, a synthetic observation from both gravitational wave and electromagnetic channels remains challenging. Relying on the day-to-week long macronova emission, GW170817 remains the only event with successful electromagnetic followup. In this manuscript, we explore the possibility of using the early stage X-ray afterglow to search for the electromagnetic counterpart of gravitational wave events. Two algorithms, the sequential observation and the local optimization are considered and applied to three simulated events. We consider the proposed Einstein probe as a candidate X-ray telescope. Benefiting from the large field of view and high sensitivity, we find that the sequential observation algorithm not only is easy to implement, but also promises a good chance of actual detection.

Symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities via the Gravitational Waves from GW170817

Motivated by the historical detection of gravitational waves from GW170817, the neutron star and the neutron drop, i.e., a certain number of neutrons confined in an external field, are systematically investigated by ab initio calculations as well as the nonrelativistic and relativistic state-of-art density functional theories. Strong correlations are found among the neutron star tidal deformability, the neutron star radius, the root-mean-square radii of neutron drops, and the symmetry energies of nuclear matter at supra-saturation densities. From these correlations and the upper limit on the tidal deformability extracted from GW170817, the neutron star radii, the neutron drop radii, and the symmetry energy at twice saturation density are respectively constrained as $R_{1.4M_{\odot}}\leqslant 12.94$ km, $R_{\rm nd} \leqslant 2.36$ fm, and $E_{\mathrm{sym}}(2ρ_0) \leqslant 53.2$ MeV.

Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock in nuclear matter without the average momentum approximation

Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory allows to derive the $G$-matrix as an effective interaction between nucleons in the nuclear medium. It depends on the center of mass momentum $\bm{P}$ of the two particles and on the two relative momenta $\bm{q}$ and $\bm{q'}$ before and after the scattering process. In the evaluation of the total energy per particle in nuclear matter usually the angle averaged center of mass momentum approximation has been used. We derive in detail the exact expressions of the angular integrations of the momentum $\bm{P}$ within relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory, especially for the case of asymmetric nuclear matter. In order to assess the reliability of the conventional average momentum approximation for the binding energy, the saturation properties of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter are systematically investigated based on the realistic Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. It is found that the exact treatment of the center of mass momentum leads to non-negligible contributions to the higher order physical quantities. The correlation between the symmetry energy $E_{\mathrm{sym}}$, the slope parameter $L$, and the curvature $K_{\mathrm{sym}}$ of the symmetry energy are investigated. The results of our RBHF calculations for the bulk parameters characterizing the equation of state are compared with recent constraints extracted from giant monopole resonance and isospin diffusion experiments.
