Emerging Optical Microscopy Techniques for Electrochemistry

An optical microscope is probably the most intuitive, simple and commonly used instrument to observe objects and discuss behaviors through images. Although the idea of imaging electrochemical processes operando by optical microscopy was initiated 40 years ago, it was not until significant progress made in the last two decades in advanced optical microscopy or plasmonics that it could become a mainstream electroanalytical strategy. This review illustrates the potential of different optical microscopies to visualize and quantify local electrochemical processes with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution (below the diffraction limit), up to the single object level with subnanoparticle or single molecule sensitivity. Developed through optically and electrochemically active model systems, optical microscopy is now shifting to materials and configurations focused on real-world electrochemical applications.

CycleGAN-based Non-parallel Speech Enhancement with an Adaptive Attention-in-attention Mechanism

Non-parallel training is a difficult but essential task for DNN-based speech enhancement methods, for the lack of adequate noisy and paired clean speech corpus in many real scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive attention-in-attention CycleGAN (AIA-CycleGAN) for non-parallel speech enhancement. In previous CycleGAN-based non-parallel speech enhancement methods, the limited mapping ability of the generator may cause performance degradation and insufficient feature learning. To alleviate this degradation, we propose an integration of adaptive time-frequency attention (ATFA) and adaptive hierarchical attention (AHA) to form an attention-in-attention (AIA) module for more flexible feature learning during the mapping procedure. More specifically, ATFA can capture the long-range temporal-spectral contextual information for more effective feature representations, while AHA can flexibly aggregate different AFTA's intermediate output feature maps by adaptive attention weights depending on the global context. Numerous experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves consistently more superior performance over previous GAN-based and CycleGAN-based methods in non-parallel training. Moreover, experiments in parallel training verify that the proposed AIA-CycleGAN also outperforms most advanced GAN-based and Non-GAN based speech enhancement approaches, especially in maintaining speech integrity and reducing speech distortion.

Large Contribution of Quasi-Acoustic Shear Phonon Modes to Thermal Conductivity in Novel Monolayer Ga2O3

Bulk gallium oxide (Ga2O3) has been widely used in lasers, dielectric coatings for solar cells, deep-ultraviolet transistor applications due to the large band gap over 4.5 eV. With the miniaturization of electronic devices, atomically thin Ga2O3 monolayer has been unveiled recently, which features an asymmetric configuration with a quintuple-layer atomic structure. The superior stability, the strain-tunable electronic properties, high carrier mobility and optical absorption indicate the promising applications in the electronic and photoelectronic devices. However, the strict investigation of lattice thermal conductivity (kappa_L) of 2D Ga2O3 is still lacking, which has impeded the widespread use in practical applications. Here, we report the computational discovery of low kappa_L with a value of 10.28 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K in atomically thin Ga2O3. Unexpectedly, two quasi-acoustic shear phonon modes contribute as high as 27% to the kappa_L at 300 K, leading to 37% contribution of optical phonon modes, much larger than many other 2D materials. We also find that the quasi-acoustic shear mode can emerge in the system without van der Waals interactions. This work provides new insight into the nature of thermal transport in non-van der Waals monolayer materials and predicts a new low kappa_L material of potential interest for thermal insulation in transistor applications.

Design and Synthesis of Clathrate LaB8 with Superconductivity

Boron-based clathrate materials, typically with three-dimensional networks of B atoms, have tunable properties through substitution of guest atoms, but the tuning of B cages themselves has not yet been developed. By combining crystal structural search with the laser-heated diamond anvil cell technique, we successfully synthesized a new B-based clathrate boride, LaB8, at ~108 GPa and ~2100 K. The novel structure has a B-richest cage, with 26 B atoms encapsulating a single La atom. LaB8 demonstrates phonon-mediated superconductivity with an estimated transition temperature of 14 K at ambient pressure, mainly originating from electron-phonon coupling of B cage. This work creates a prototype platform for subsequent investigation on tunable electronic properties through the choice of captured atoms.

A Two-stage Complex Network using Cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Networks for Speech Enhancement

Cycle-consistent generative adversarial networks (CycleGAN) have shown their promising performance for speech enhancement (SE), while one intractable shortcoming of these CycleGAN-based SE systems is that the noise components propagate throughout the cycle and cannot be completely eliminated. Additionally, conventional CycleGAN-based SE systems only estimate the spectral magnitude, while the phase is unaltered. Motivated by the multi-stage learning concept, we propose a novel two-stage denoising system that combines a CycleGAN-based magnitude enhancing network and a subsequent complex spectral refining network in this paper. Specifically, in the first stage, a CycleGAN-based model is responsible for only estimating magnitude, which is subsequently coupled with the original noisy phase to obtain a coarsely enhanced complex spectrum. After that, the second stage is applied to further suppress the residual noise components and estimate the clean phase by a complex spectral mapping network, which is a pure complex-valued network composed of complex 2D convolution/deconvolution and complex temporal-frequency attention blocks. Experimental results on two public datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach consistently surpasses previous one-stage CycleGANs and other state-of-the-art SE systems in terms of various evaluation metrics, especially in background noise suppression.

Improve photon number discrimination for a superconducting series nanowire detector by applying a digital matched filter

Photon number resolving (PNR) is an important capacity for detectors working in quantum and classical applications. Although a conventional superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) is not a PNR detector, by arranging nanowires in a series array and multiplexing photons over space, such series PNR-SNSPD can gain quasi-PNR capacity. However, the accuracy and maximum resolved photon number are both limited by the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio of the output pulses. Here, we introduce a matched filter, which is an optimal filter in terms of SNR for SNSPD pulses. Experimentally, compared to conventional readout using a room-temperature amplifier, the normalized spacing between pulse amplitudes from adjacent photon number detections increased by a maximum factor of 2.1 after the matched filter. Combining with a cryogenic amplifier to increase SNR further, such spacing increased by a maximum factor of 5.3. In contrast to a low pass filter, the matched filter gave better SNRs while maintaining good timing jitters. Minimum timing jitter of 55 ps was obtained experimentally. Our results suggest that the matched filter is a useful tool for improving the performance of the series PNR-SNSPD and the maximum resolved photon number can be expected to reach 65 or even large.

RecBole: Towards a Unified, Comprehensive and Efficient Framework for Recommendation Algorithms

In recent years, there are a large number of recommendation algorithms proposed in the literature, from traditional collaborative filtering to deep learning algorithms. However, the concerns about how to standardize open source implementation of recommendation algorithms continually increase in the research community. In the light of this challenge, we propose a unified, comprehensive and efficient recommender system library called RecBole, which provides a unified framework to develop and reproduce recommendation algorithms for research purpose. In this library, we implement 73 recommendation models on 28 benchmark datasets, covering the categories of general recommendation, sequential recommendation, context-aware recommendation and knowledge-based recommendation. We implement the RecBole library based on PyTorch, which is one of the most popular deep learning frameworks. Our library is featured in many aspects, including general and extensible data structures, comprehensive benchmark models and datasets, efficient GPU-accelerated execution, and extensive and standard evaluation protocols. We provide a series of auxiliary functions, tools, and scripts to facilitate the use of this library, such as automatic parameter tuning and break-point resume. Such a framework is useful to standardize the implementation and evaluation of recommender systems. The project and documents are released at https://recbole.io/.

En route to high Tc superconductivity via Rb substitution of guest metal atoms in SrB3C3 clathrate

Recently, a host/guest clathrate SrB3C3 with sp3-bonded boron-carbon framework was synthesized at around 50 GPa. On the basis of electron count, the structure is understood as guest Sr2+ cations intercalated in the (B3C3)3- framework. Previous calculations suggest that SrB3C3 is a hole conductor with an estimated superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of 42 K at ambient pressure. If atoms with similar radius, such as Rb, can substitute Sr2+ in the lattice, the electronic as well as superconductivity properties of this material will be modified significantly. Here, we perform extensive simulations on the stability and physical properties of Rb-Sr-B3C3 system using first-principles density functional calculation in combination with cluster expansion and CALYPSO structure prediction method. We predict a phonon-mediated superconductor Rb0.5Sr0.5B3C3 with a remarkably high Tc of 78 K at ambient pressure, which is a significant improvement from the estimated value (42 K) in SrB3C3. The current results suggest that substitution of alkali atom in synthesized clathrate SrB3C3 is a viable route toward high-Tc compounds.

On the Merge of k-NN Graph

k-nearest neighbor graph is a fundamental data structure in many disciplines such as information retrieval, data-mining, pattern recognition, and machine learning, etc. In the literature, considerable research has been focusing on how to efficiently build an approximate k-nearest neighbor graph (k-NN graph) for a fixed dataset. Unfortunately, a closely related issue of how to merge two existing k-NN graphs has been overlooked. In this paper, we address the issue of k-NN graph merging in two different scenarios. In the first scenario, a symmetric merge algorithm is proposed to combine two approximate k-NN graphs. The algorithm facilitates large-scale processing by the efficient merging of k-NN graphs that are produced in parallel. In the second scenario, a joint merge algorithm is proposed to expand an existing k-NN graph with a raw dataset. The algorithm enables the incremental construction of a hierarchical approximate k-NN graph. Superior performance is attained when leveraging the hierarchy for NN search of various data types, dimensionality, and distance measures.

Lyapunov-guided Deep Reinforcement Learning for Stable Online Computation Offloading in Mobile-Edge Computing Networks

Opportunistic computation offloading is an effective method to improve the computation performance of mobile-edge computing (MEC) networks under dynamic edge environment. In this paper, we consider a multi-user MEC network with time-varying wireless channels and stochastic user task data arrivals in sequential time frames. In particular, we aim to design an online computation offloading algorithm to maximize the network data processing capability subject to the long-term data queue stability and average power constraints. The online algorithm is practical in the sense that the decisions for each time frame are made without the assumption of knowing future channel conditions and data arrivals. We formulate the problem as a multi-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem that jointly determines the binary offloading (each user computes the task either locally or at the edge server) and system resource allocation decisions in sequential time frames. To address the coupling in the decisions of different time frames, we propose a novel framework, named LyDROO, that combines the advantages of Lyapunov optimization and deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Specifically, LyDROO first applies Lyapunov optimization to decouple the multi-stage stochastic MINLP into deterministic per-frame MINLP subproblems. By doing so, it guarantees to satisfy all the long-term constraints by solving the per-frame subproblems that are much smaller in size. Then, LyDROO integrates model-based optimization and model-free DRL to solve the per-frame MINLP problems with low computational complexity. Simulation results show that under various network setups, the proposed LyDROO achieves optimal computation performance while stabilizing all queues in the system. Besides, it induces very low execution latency that is particularly suitable for real-time implementation in fast fading environments.

Phase-Programmable Gaussian Boson Sampling Using Stimulated Squeezed Light

The tantalizing promise of quantum computational speedup in solving certain problems has been strongly supported by recent experimental evidence from a high-fidelity 53-qubit superconducting processor1 and Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) with up to 76 detected photons. Analogous to the increasingly sophisticated Bell tests that continued to refute local hidden variable theories, quantum computational advantage tests are expected to provide increasingly compelling experimental evidence against the Extended Church-Turing thesis. In this direction, continued competition between upgraded quantum hardware and improved classical simulations is required. Here, we report a new GBS experiment that produces up to 113 detection events out of a 144-mode photonic circuit. We develop a new high-brightness and scalable quantum light source, exploring the idea of stimulated squeezed photons, which has simultaneously near-unity purity and efficiency. This GBS is programmable by tuning the phase of the input squeezed states. We demonstrate a new method to efficiently validate the samples by inferring from computationally friendly subsystems, which rules out hypotheses including distinguishable photons and thermal states. We show that our noisy GBS experiment passes the nonclassicality test using an inequality, and we reveal non-trivial genuine high-order correlation in the GBS samples, which are evidence of robustness against possible classical simulation schemes. The photonic quantum computer, Jiuzhang 2.0, yields a Hilbert space dimension up to $10^{43}$, and a sampling rate $10^{24}$ faster than using brute-force simulation on supercomputers.

Progressive Class-based Expansion Learning For Image Classification

In this paper, we propose a novel image process scheme called class-based expansion learning for image classification, which aims at improving the supervision-stimulation frequency for the samples of the confusing classes. Class-based expansion learning takes a bottom-up growing strategy in a class-based expansion optimization fashion, which pays more attention to the quality of learning the fine-grained classification boundaries for the preferentially selected classes. Besides, we develop a class confusion criterion to select the confusing class preferentially for training. In this way, the classification boundaries of the confusing classes are frequently stimulated, resulting in a fine-grained form. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme on several benchmarks.

Online Cognitive Data Sensing and Processing Optimization in Energy-harvesting Edge Computing Systems

Mobile edge computing (MEC) has recently become a prevailing technique to alleviate the intensive computation burden in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. However, the limited device battery capacity and stringent spectrum resource significantly restrict the data processing performance of MEC-enabled IoT networks. To address the two performance limitations, we consider in this paper an MEC-enabled IoT system with an energy harvesting (EH) wireless device (WD) which opportunistically accesses the licensed spectrum of an overlaid primary communication link for task offloading. We aim to maximize the long-term average sensing rate of the WD subject to quality of service (QoS) requirement of primary link, average power constraint of MEC server (MS) and data queue stability of both MS and WD. We formulate the problem as a multi-stage stochastic optimization and propose an online algorithm named PLySE that applies the perturbed Lyapunov optimization technique to decompose the original problem into per-slot deterministic optimization problems. For each per-slot problem, we derive the closed-form optimal solution of data sensing and processing control to facilitate low-complexity real-time implementation. Interestingly, our analysis finds that the optimal solution exhibits an threshold-based structure. Simulation results collaborate with our analysis and demonstrate more than 46.7\% data sensing rate improvement of the proposed PLySE over representative benchmark methods.

Curriculum Pre-Training Heterogeneous Subgraph Transformer for Top-$N$ Recommendation

Due to the flexibility in modelling data heterogeneity, heterogeneous information network (HIN) has been adopted to characterize complex and heterogeneous auxiliary data in top-$N$ recommender systems, called \emph{HIN-based recommendation}. HIN characterizes complex, heterogeneous data relations, containing a variety of information that may not be related to the recommendation task. Therefore, it is challenging to effectively leverage useful information from HINs for improving the recommendation performance. To address the above issue, we propose a Curriculum pre-training based HEterogeneous Subgraph Transformer (called \emph{CHEST}) with new \emph{data characterization}, \emph{representation model} and \emph{learning algorithm}. Specifically, we consider extracting useful information from HIN to compose the interaction-specific heterogeneous subgraph, containing both sufficient and relevant context information for recommendation. Then we capture the rich semantics (\eg graph structure and path semantics) within the subgraph via a heterogeneous subgraph Transformer, where we encode the subgraph with multi-slot sequence representations. Besides, we design a curriculum pre-training strategy to provide an elementary-to-advanced learning process, by which we smoothly transfer basic semantics in HIN for modeling user-item interaction relation. Extensive experiments conducted on three real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over a number of competitive baselines, especially when only limited training data is available.

A Deep Variational Bayesian Framework for Blind Image Deblurring

Blind image deblurring is an important yet very challenging problem in low-level vision. Traditional optimization based methods generally formulate this task as a maximum-a-posteriori estimation or variational inference problem, whose performance highly relies on the handcraft priors for both the latent image and the blur kernel. In contrast, recent deep learning methods generally learn, from a large collection of training images, deep neural networks (DNNs) directly mapping the blurry image to the clean one or to the blur kernel, paying less attention to the physical degradation process of the blurry image. In this paper, we present a deep variational Bayesian framework for blind image deblurring. Under this framework, the posterior of the latent clean image and blur kernel can be jointly estimated in an amortized inference fashion with DNNs, and the involved inference DNNs can be trained by fully considering the physical blur model, together with the supervision of data driven priors for the clean image and blur kernel, which is naturally led to by the evidence lower bound objective. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to substantiate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The results show that it can not only achieve a promising performance with relatively simple networks, but also enhance the performance of existing DNNs for deblurring.

Blockchain-Based Decentralized Energy Management Platform for Residential Distributed Energy Resources in A Virtual Power Plant

The advent of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as distributed renewables, energy storage, electric vehicles, and controllable loads, \rv{brings} a significantly disruptive and transformational impact on the centralized power system. It is widely accepted that a paradigm shift to a decentralized power system with bidirectional power flow is necessary to the integration of DERs. The virtual power plant (VPP) emerges as a promising paradigm for managing DERs to participate in the power system. In this paper, we develop a blockchain-based VPP energy management platform to facilitate a rich set of transactive energy activities among residential users with renewables, energy storage, and flexible loads in a VPP. Specifically, users can interact with each other to trade energy for mutual benefits and provide network services, such as feed-in energy, reserve, and demand response, through the VPP. To respect the users' independence and preserve their privacy, we design a decentralized optimization algorithm to optimize the users' energy scheduling, energy trading, and network services. Then we develop a prototype blockchain network for VPP energy management and implement the proposed algorithm on the blockchain network. By experiments using real-world data-trace, we validated the feasibility and effectiveness of our algorithm and the blockchain system. The simulation results demonstrate that our blockchain-based VPP energy management platform reduces the users' cost by up to 38.6% and reduces the overall system cost by 11.2%.

What and Where: Learn to Plug Adapters via NAS for Multi-Domain Learning

As an important and challenging problem, multi-domain learning (MDL) typically seeks for a set of effective lightweight domain-specific adapter modules plugged into a common domain-agnostic network. Usually, existing ways of adapter plugging and structure design are handcrafted and fixed for all domains before model learning, resulting in the learning inflexibility and computational intensiveness. With this motivation, we propose to learn a data-driven adapter plugging strategy with Neural Architecture Search (NAS), which automatically determines where to plug for those adapter modules. Furthermore, we propose a NAS-adapter module for adapter structure design in a NAS-driven learning scheme, which automatically discovers effective adapter module structures for different domains. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our MDL model against existing approaches under the conditions of comparable performance.

Memory Efficient Class-Incremental Learning for Image Classification

With the memory-resource-limited constraints, class-incremental learning (CIL) usually suffers from the "catastrophic forgetting" problem when updating the joint classification model on the arrival of newly added classes. To cope with the forgetting problem, many CIL methods transfer the knowledge of old classes by preserving some exemplar samples into the size-constrained memory buffer. To utilize the memory buffer more efficiently, we propose to keep more auxiliary low-fidelity exemplar samples rather than the original real high-fidelity exemplar samples. Such a memory-efficient exemplar preserving scheme makes the old-class knowledge transfer more effective. However, the low-fidelity exemplar samples are often distributed in a different domain away from that of the original exemplar samples, that is, a domain shift. To alleviate this problem, we propose a duplet learning scheme that seeks to construct domain-compatible feature extractors and classifiers, which greatly narrows down the above domain gap. As a result, these low-fidelity auxiliary exemplar samples have the ability to moderately replace the original exemplar samples with a lower memory cost. In addition, we present a robust classifier adaptation scheme, which further refines the biased classifier (learned with the samples containing distillation label knowledge about old classes) with the help of the samples of pure true class labels. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this work against the state-of-the-art approaches.
